Normally when I see a restaurant right at the entrance to a major tourist destination, I stay far away. But after looking at reviews we decided to give it a go and I'm really happy we did! I made a reservation on Open Table as we entered Mount Vernon, then m spent several hours walking the grounds and doing the tour of the home. We were hungry hot and tired so it was really nice to just be able to walk in and be seated. Honestly I probably would have eaten anything at that point but the food here was really good! In hindsight, I would rather have the Grand Marnier French toast over the Hoe Cake. I was expecting the hoe cake to be grittier and more representative of colonial cooking. It was OK, but I think I could have gotten the same result using fine ground cornmeal and Bisquick. Service was quick and courteous, though some food items came out slower than others. Wife and I both agree the Bourbon Braised Short Rib was better than the Steak Frite which was a bit chewy, though flavorful. Our waitress took our full order--drinks, appetizers, and kids' meals--then came back 10 minutes later and asked if we were ready to order, like she hadn't taken it already. We repeated everything, and then the wait started. About 20 minutes later, the kids' food showed up... but still no drinks. We reminded her, she said she'd check, and then nothing. After 45 minutes of waiting on drinks, we finally had to get the manager involved just to get something as basic as beverages. Meanwhile, tables that came in after us were getting their drinks without any issue. The worst part? When it was time to pay, the waitress literally took the handheld device out of my hands and gave herself a 5-star rating. That crossed the line from poor service into zero integrity. This place has a rocking bar cranking out Colonial Bourbons and Spiced Butter Rums at a crazy fast pace on a Wednesday afternoon. We enjoyed our entrees of Potomac River Salmon and local mutton chops - JK / burgers, club sandwiches and Caesar salads were all solid - finished with some really good cherry pies! Reservations are still recommended on the weekends as I'd imagine it'll fill up as one of the main restaurants in this complex. I got the peanut soup and hoecake which were pretty solid. The peanut soup is like peanut paste type of thickness but still easy to consume, and there are chestnuts there too. It is a bit hearty despite it being on the smaller side. The hoecakes are like pancakes with a flakier consistency and it was pretty good, especially with the vanilla bean butter and honey. These 2 dishes are on the smaller side but still very hearty. ***is this really what GW ate?*** The selling point, by our guide, was that some of the menu items were from the same George Washington era. When we got there, the host told us it'll be a 20 minute wait so she took our number. We waited in the waiting room for 10 minutes as other guests entered and got seated. The chicken wings looked like they were boiled, then pan fried without any favor. Yes, no breading, salt, pepper or anything. It was dry, tough and tasted like a tofu drumette but with a bone. The crab tomato soup was just that...tomato sprinkled with crab flakes. I give move crab flakes to my aquarium fishes. The cornbread was good but the top was cold, couldn't melt the honey butter. The best seller fried chicken was good and the mash potatoes with string beans was good. Chicken was moist and the breading was very well seasoned. Mash potatoes I loved because it was very buttery. The pork chops initially lasted moist but as it got to the middle, the moisture disappeared. They used the same fried chicken with the waffles. We had the same waffle during our breakfast in our hotel but the syrup tasted like it had beer in it. The Host set a negative tone for our dining. But the waitress made up for it because she checked on us multiple times. Yes, we tipped her good. During our dining experience, there was this 7 year old girl talking like she was smart in her table. Amazing food! When you go to places that gather a lot of tourists I have a mediocre expectation but was blown away by The Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant. I didn't intend to have a five course meal but here I was going all in. Is the legend of the Washington's hospitality being carried on vicariously here?! I started with the Butternut Squash Soup and it was spot on. The spice cream sauce is a nice compliment and overall a nice rich texture. Next was the Roasted Turkey Pot Pie with nice tender white meat and a gravy encompassing a fresh buttermilk biscuit. Lastly I finished with coffee and the Colonial Bread Pudding with fresh made whipped cream and the bread pudding have notes reminiscent of French toast. Problem is that we've eaten here for years on and off. Years ago this was our #1 favorite place to go for a fancy meal by the fireplace. So.... On a beautiful day wanted to sit us in a dark windowless room while the bar area was sunny and bright. The peanut soup had no peanuts nor water chestnuts and was lukewarm , and overly thick with corn starch, and was a cup not a bowl size ( with a chipped rim). Maybe 3/4 of a cup. And oh how I miss the house made crackers!!!! The fried green tomatoes were hard to cut and were not served in a lettuce bed any longer. The turkey pot pie was mostly a biscuit covered in gravy. We were seated in the front room, which has a great view of the road and people walking up to Mt. Vernon. The menu has something for everyone. On this visit, I opted for the soup and sandwich option. I had the a bowl of the butternut squash soup and half a club sandwich. Together they were the perfect amount of food, and they both tasted delicious. The food is good and prices are very reasonable. Parking was easy and there were many handicapped spots available (nearby), but easy to drop our party off right in front of restaurant and park in the lot a short walk away. Seated right away in a beautiful room. Wished the fireplace was on, but the room was lovely nonetheless. If you visit in the winter and are cold easily, you might bring a shawl. We ordered brunch, starting with the skillet cornbread. Serving was small but perfect size for our party of 3, ladies. Delicious! I enjoyed my omelette and appreciated that the chef made my potatoes without peppers and onions. Omelette was yummy and big enough to take some home. We ordered an extra entree of the Mac & Cheese for the table and it was delicious! It came with green beans that were very yummy. We were disappointed that the attached store was closed during our visit (I think for inventory). But a great excuse to come back in the future for brunch and shopping. Our server was a young guy, probably around 18-22, and I wasn't sure how it was going to go at first but he was excellent. All of the younger boys who ran the food were incredibly sweet and attentive. They even stopped to chat with me for a minute. I had the fried green tomatoes before that and while the breading was a fail . . . flimsy and came off easily . . . but flavors were rich and pleasing. I passed on dessert, but they offer things like flourless chocolate cake, cheesecake, and bread pudding. They also have wine, beer, and cocktails. Basic stuff . . . I had a refreshing sangria and Martha's rum punch, which was fruity, but not too sweet. Service was low-key, but effective. Vibe is homey and on point with the colonial theme. We asked our server what the most authentic dishes were and were recommended the hoecakes (reportedly George Washington's favorite!) and peanut soup. We also got the beef fricassee entree. We really enjoyed all of our dishes. The hoecakes were a fun pancake alternative and super tasty. I also would recommend the peanut soup just because it's so unique! It was almost like eating peanut butter in soup form, but honestly really good. The beef fricassee entree was huge. So warm, nourishing, and comforting. Even though the handle of the skillet was warm the butter was not melting which was an indication that the bread wasn't hot. Even with this I gave it a try and had to return it. I don't like cornbread with actual corn but even with that the cornbread was sooo dry it was inedible. Would never recommend to others! The crab cake dinner was ok at best. I had the Lamb Chops that are Tea - Brined. It was topped with some kind of jam which balanced well with the meatiness of the lamb. Came with mashers and Haricot green beans.
