I ordered the Corned abeef Hash and Eggs delivered via Doordash. Food was OK, but not a traditional breakfast I was expecting. Over easy eggs were cooked over medium. Corned beef and gravy was good but needed salt I was lucky to half at the hotel as there was none included in the To ago order. The rye bread was a single slice where most others have 2 or 4 slices. They included butter and jelly. Hasbrown potatoes were heavy with turmeric like Indian food. I didn't mind it but really wanted a traditional breakfast meal like Silver Diner. I really like this spot and every time I'm in Alexandria, I make a point to come in. I try to get something different every time I come and I have yet to be disappointed in my choice. I visited for the first time yesterday. Really loved the ambience, the colors/tiling. The food...some was delicious (French toast) and some was pretty bad (Hash browns, md so-called crab dip). The dip had not one lump of crab meat. It was some kind of pinkish puree! The bread that went with it was great and well seasoned. I definitely will go again. It's close, serves breakfast all day and open from 7-10. The waitress was neglectful and the place wasn't even full! Water glasses left empty, took really long time to come back after we said we needed a bit more time to order , didn't really know the menu, no smiles, no personality, brought to go boxes but no check. We literally had to stand and start walking for her to bring the check and it seemed like we were her only table--thus the 3 stars. I will definitely be back though. Disappointed. I'm truly disappointed. I really appreciate diners. It would seem like it's easy to run a good diner. It's not. In my way of thinking, a diner is like a utility player, good at many things but not amazing at any one thing. You've gotta be good at making a wide variety of food, 3 very different meals (breakfast vs. dinner for example), and typically present the food pretty quickly. That's really hard. And the clients are in a wide range - from not yet woken up in the early morning to hung over as one reviewer described himself. I totally acknowledge the challenge. A few key features. Good coffee. It doesn't have to be great but it has to be drinkable as people will often consume several cups. Good staff who are patient and friendly, for people half asleep or 3/4 drunk. The Executive Diner rates very high on these measures. We had a wonderful server. The diner is clean and very well maintained. The booth benches are in great shape. And prices are totally reasonable. Now for the not so good. The food. My omelet was anything but fluffy as it is described on the menu. The fillings were good but the eggs were way salted, I could really taste the salt on certain bites. The whole wheat toast was desperately boring and there was no jelly to spread on top. The grits weren't overly buttery, butter was served on the side. But OMG it was so salty that I asked to replace it with home fries. Our wonderful server was understanding and accommodating. But the home fries were really greasy and salty. I've been thirsty for 4 hours since eating there and the food is still sitting in my stomach. I really hate that feeling. Executive is a fallback option of ours for brunch or dinner when nothing else around seems right for the moment. We've been coming here for a long long time. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. Service has improved the past year or two. Before, service could be hit or miss. Executive Diner is good about letting you make substitutions. One of my favorite items is the grilled cheese with bacon sandwich. I do have them hold the tomatoes, because those are a bit much on the sandwich. I enjoy breakfast here, they have especially good bacon. However I'm not a fan of their home fries, which are hefty chunks of sliced potato with a few pieces of red and bell pepper. The good news is that the home fries do not automatically come with breakfast, you can get fruit or grits instead. And instead of toast, you can get a biscuit. There is one item I deem "not recommended" and that is their side garlic bread. I see the garlic and some oregano, but all I taste is some seasoning I've never had before and it tastes like somebody ground up flower petals and seasoned the bread with it. Just awful! My fiance and I love going to diners every now and then, but the Executive Diner isn't one we'd go to again. The Eggs Benedict wasn't very good, the hollandaise tasted like it came from a package, and a sad serving of it on the poached eggs. On top of that only one of the poached eggs was done correctly with a runny yolk once cut into. The French toast tasted like a hard crusty sponge, even syrup couldn't save it. Her breakfast platter was serviceable. Your standard eggs, bacon and home fries. Service there was eh. We didn't get spoken to until 15 mins after we sat at our table. I won't harp on it too much since it was a little busy in there. Although, I will say the mimosas were good, the fresh OJ was a positive. I don't usually have to wait because service is pretty quick, the only times I think that you would have to wait is a Sunday morning for breakfast rush because a lot of people from the church next-door come over. The portions are big. The quality of the food is great and the prices are pretty reasonable for the area. Their French onion soup is massive in one of my favorite things here. I also love their burger and club sandwich. I will say that the consistency for their pancakes is hit or miss, sometimes they're really fluffy and light and other times they're really dense and dry. I wouldn't recommend coming later at night because I did a few times and they were cleaning the floors and there was a horrible bleach smell throughout the restaurant and it definitely turned me off from wanting to eat my food. read more

Came on Monday 7/29 after our original breakfast choice was closed. It was around 1130-12pm and the restaurant was fairly empty. We were seated immediately but it took some time to be waited on. Not even so much as a "someone will be with you shortly" or anything similar. Due to this delay we were ready to order once our waiter did arrive since we had time to go over the menu. We ordered: Shrimp and grits - 9/10 - the grits weren't cooked all the way so there were some bits in it but overall the dish was good. The sauce had great flavor and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Grilled cheese added bacon- my friends dish - said it was decent enough as it's hard to mess up a classic. Once we got our food, similar to my last experience, our waitress just disappeared. I mean we literally didn't know where she was for about 30mins, even after we'd eaten our food and were ready to leave we couldn't find her. I don't understand how you disappear from people, especially after getting their meals without a check in or anything. Decided to finally give this place a try and honestly will not return. My friend and I came to a consensus that the food was just not up to par. Her BBQ ribs lacked sauce making it appear and taste dry and we did ask for more sauce but it took awhile for it to come - we had to ask another employee. This place is good but has a few issues. I am very specific about how I want things cooked with my breakfast order. I know the server writes it down because I have seen it on my order. But the cook doesn't read it and the server doesn't check it before bringing it to me. Of course they are always willing to correct it but the remaining items get cold as they are fixing my earlier request. Its hard to spread cold butter on cold toast/English Muffins. They get my order right about 25% of the time. Another pet peeve I have is on their check the suggested tip is post tax with the 11% State/Alexandria tax added. I always leave 20%+ but here I leave 18% which comes close to the 20% pretax which they should follow. I wish I wouldn't have to do this. read more

Was in Alexandria running errands waiting for one of the big box stores to open and decided to have breakfast. Parking lot was small but we had arrived fairly early on a Sunday morning so we were able to snag a spot. We were greeted and seated right away. We placed our order and it came out rather quick. I got the country fried steak and eggs breakfast; husband got the corned beef hash and eggs and we both opted for home fries tho fruit and grits were options. The country fried steak breakfast was good. The gravy had a great flavor and the breading for the chicken wasn't your typical breaded batter; it was a tempura batter. This was the first time I had it prepared that way and I wasn't mad at it tho I do prefer the traditional method. My home fries were also not made with your usual russet potato; they were made with red potatoes..again not what I was expecting. Some of them were slightly undercooked and lacked seasoning. My husband's potatoes in contrast were the total opposite. His potatoes were cooked thoroughly and had great flavor. He tasted my potatoes and exclaimed how they were nothing like his. Same exact dish, two very different executions. I concluded that the corned beef hash that sat on his potatoes must have contributed to the flavor. My eggs were cooked exactly how I asked, scrambled soft. Not many places get them right for me, but they were perfect! We also ordered an entree of french toast to share and it was ok. I honestly wanted pancakes but unless you get the executive breakfast platter, or order a single pancake for nearly five bucks, pancakes aren't offered. As for the French toast, I should have opted for this as a side (or not at all). But, unfortunately, unless you get the full size, you don't get the berries and whipped cream that comes with a full size serving (waitress made that very clear) and it needs those accompaniments to give it umph. Otherwise it is just deep fried bread and I feel like the bread was lacking. It wasn't challah or brioche even..it appeared to be plain white bread and whatever custard they used didn't appear to include any sweet nor spicy notes like cinnamon or nutmeg, because again, the syrup, whipped cream and berries gave the french toast its flavor. To have this as a side, you'd just be tasting deep fried toast with syrup (if that's what you like on your french toast). I actually would skip on getting this altogether honestly. All in all I would come back to try other dishes. The restaurant vibes were cool and the lighting was perfect; not too bright, not too dim. The service was okay as well, but not extraordinary. Executive Diner looks nice from the outside but it's really nothing more than another generic diner. Came here with my parents as a belated-birthday celebration for my dad, and we were really hoping for a noteworthy experience since we had passed by the restaurant so many times on the way to other places. We had no issue parking, so that was a good start. However, everything from that point on was decidedly average: uninspiring service, average food, and honestly not great prices considering what you're getting for them. This place felt more like an urban attempt to capture the feeling of a traditional roadside diner, but stripping it of the delicious food and personable service. I should be clear: this place was not bad. Indeed, it did not do anything particularly poorly, but rather it did everything in a fairly forgettable way. If you've ever been to Silver Diner, you know what I mean by this: you leave full but fairly confident that you could have done better if you had looked over your options more thoroughly. If you're in the area and want a true diner experience, try Barnside Diner instead (though sadly their hours make them hard to visit, another victim of Covid). Overall: 2.5 stars ----- Pros: - Food was decent but completely forgotten by the time you hit the parking lot. - Plenty of parking.
