Disc brake fluid and pad replacement. I brought the bike in late in the afternoon, and they estimated a 1 day turnaround. A couple of hours later, they phoned to say they'd had an opening and the work was finished, so I got the bike and the brakes were perfect. Cost for the work was very reasonable, even surprisingly low. Very happy with their service, as usual. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. I've taken my bike here 5 or 6 times for the same issue and they say it's fixed, I get home and the tire is completely flat again and won't even pump up at all. I haven't even been able to ride my bike in almost a year because of this same issue that they say is fixed and then I take it home then try to ride it later and it's flat. I've purchased so many tubes from there to fix it on my own and 3 of the 4 tubes were flat. It's insane. I really don't like this place. read more

The folks at this shop are so kind! The customer service earns them 5 stars from me. I contacted the shop because they had a bike in stock that I'd had my eye on for a bit. I told them that I was driving down from Seattle and wanted to make sure it was in stock. They had it, but the bike was not built. They offered to quickly build it for me so I could come test ride it 2 days later. They called me 2x to update me on the progress. When I got to the shop, I ended up buying the bike. They were very kind to me and I enjoyed being helped by Tommy (I am 70% sure that is his name, but I am not good with names). Unfortunately, once I got home and looked at the bike next to my other bike, I realized that it was way too big. I hadn't even ridden the bike after transporting it home. The next morning I contacted the shop and asked if I could swap out the bike for the next smaller size. They said that they would happily swap it out for me and that they would build it. I drove down again the next day (kind of a haul) and swapped the bikes without issue. I do wish I had gotten a bit more advice on the sizing, but the employees were wonderful and accommodating. They made this happen for me, on my timeline, which was so incredibly kind. I wish I lived closer. I highly recommend buying a bike from them. Note that if you are getting an All City (a brand they carry), they generally run large and their sizing is a little different from other brands. I went to Joe's for the first time to have a used bike worked on (tune-up). Hard pass. The guy working there was incredibly negative and you could tell he was good at pointing at things, but lacking the skill set to literally FIX anything. Do yourself a favor, go to ANY other bike shop in the city, you'll save time and get better service. read more

My bike had a flat. Took it to Joe Bike and they told me the tire was punctured and the tube was too. The new tube and tire and labor was not cheap. Took the bike home and the next morning it was flat again. Had to take it back and they said it would take about 15 minutes to find the problem and fix it. 45 minutes went by and they called and said their staff the day before had done a "rough install" meaning they did not do the work properly but they had fixed it now. Which appears to be true so far. I get it, people make mistakes but not awesome. read more

This is a quaint neighborhood bike shop with interesting merchandise. But the entrance to their parking lot has no entrance sign and the intersection before the shop is confusing. The intersection by their store has a special "no turn" sign for the safety of a bike area. We were unfamiliar with the intersection and had never been to their shop before. We turned at the intersection because we were focused on figuring out where to enter their parking lot. One of the proprietors was highly impolite. He yelled at us from the corner when we made the turn that then yelled at us when we were in his shop. Embarrassing. He clearly cares more about his special intersection than about his customers. read more

Joe's is my go to place for repairs for a while. There's a shop closer to me I like to go to as well, but they've been stumped a couple times on tricky repairs, and had to redo repairs a couple times. Joe's has always diagnosed the problem correctly and fixed it in a timely manner, if not while I wait for simple things like a flat fix. I was cycling around in Portland and knew my tires needed air -- badly. My home gauge had betrayed me and once on the road I was squishing around on flabby tires. I had carried the bike to town on a rack and was far from home. It was not quite 10 in the morning. As I squished along looking for a place that might have air -- and not require an adapter for my Presta valves -- I saw a collection of bikes on the sidewalk and thought it must be a bike shop. I was right. They had to be barely open. Despite the fact my bike had not come from them, the dear man slung out a compressor hose and aired me up. When I asked what I could give him for the courtesy, he said, no, nothing. And then, turning back, said, "But a good review would be nice." So here it is. What kindness. Thank you! read more

The shop has a well thought out array of merch. My customer experience was not good. I put a deposit on a bike after riding one that had a hold deposit for someone else. "It's in a container on the ocean, it should be in Vancouver BC in two weeks", I was told. Call 4 weeks later...still not there. "Please don't sell it to someone else" I asked. "We would never do that!" OK. I patiently wait two more weeks....Finally got a VM, "Great News! Your bike is here!...there have been a couple of changes....it's the next year's model, the color is different, the spec is different, and the PRICE is different. C'mon by and pick it up! Yay!" Oh no....oh heck no. F*%# you Joe Bike. That's not the bike I bought and patiently waited six weeks for. And you know it. Stop gaslighting me and just apologize. Either you sold my bike to someone else, or you messed up and sold me the wrong bike. Instead of simply admitting this, you f-ed up AGAIN and left me an unapologetic VM that showed a total lack of respect or empathy for my time in selecting a bike. When I finally called you back, you doubled-down on that and blamed the manufacturer for sending you the wrong bike. You treat your customers like we're stupid and gullible. We're not. We're people who love bikes, just like you. We're not the customer that just wants to buy a cheap bike at Walmart to put in the garage (to be sold at a next year's garage sale because we realized we don't ride the POS). If we were, we'd obviously be at Walmart, buying the $300 POS bikes from China. We put time and careful thought into selecting a bike. But your behavior shows that YOU should be at Walmart, selling bikes. It would be easier on everyone. And you, dear reader, should learn from my painful experience. read more

I brought my "new" bike as of April 2021 in for the "90" day tune-up. They were more than accomodating to still honor the tune-up. On top of that they pointed out a bent chainring issue that, honestly, I would've just chalked up to the shifting being off or something else. This is very hard to write as I am going to present an accurate picture of what I went through to have a Custom Bike made by Joe Bike aside from the jewel that I received. It was the process that made the experience terrible not the end product. What I'm going to present is just the tip of the Ice Berg in a 9 week docu-drama of upsets from the Customer Service Side of the Equation. I know that the people at Joe Bike are well intended, are passionate about Bikes and Bike building but yet, lack the sophistication to deal with people who expect exactitude and nothing less than great or excellent customer service. This I did not receive and yet, I promised Joe to tender him 5 Stars. You can read my review with a grain of salt or take it at face value. Ultimately the choice is yours. Here goes: "Listen. I'm either a Narcissist or a Solipsist but the fact of the matter is...is that I've got two months of work, oversight, frustration and almost ripping someone's head off upset over the design and manufacturing of my new Bike. When it came in yesterday and I took it to Patrick of Wheelman Bikes just south of my Fortress of Solitude in Gardena, the Bike was in the 90 percentile, which for me is an near failure given what I paid for the Bike. Again and for the last time Tess who informed me AFTER THE FACT that there was a problem with the Brakes which she told me in an eMail after it arrived in Los Angeles via Amtrak Express. After the fact? After Patrick made the proper adjustments so the Brakes were actually usable and not a hazard waiting to happen, I took the new object of my affection out for its first ride and I was severely let down...damned near disappointed and so angry with myself and blaming nobody else BUT ME that I actually pondered selling the Bike at a loss. Fact of the matter is that I scored an 'A' in Design, Components and Color and a 'D' in Ride-ability, comfort and trust. Again and most probably not for the last time, I had been hoist by my own petard. Given that I had Polio as a 3 year old, I have a triple curvature of the spine and though I have very long legs for a man of my size, I have a very compact Torso such that my final Ribs touch my Pelvis. Well, geometrically, this presents a problem with my Bike as I need to jack the Saddle (seat) way up high so I get full extension of my legs in the down-stroke thereby being problematic when I lean forward in my attempt to hold on to the Drop Bars of the Road-style handle bars. It feels like I'm falling forward and compressing my Torso in the process. I was so angry that I could only see one color and that was red. I just wasted two months, countless hours trolling for the perfect parts, endless Status Update Conversations with the people at Joe Bike in Portland, with the good folks at Spotbrand Bikes in Denver Colorado, especially Adam, who coincidentally share an office with the Gates Belt Drive Company which makes this Bike and absolute dream to ride and finally with Gene Powell of RAD Finishes also of Portland, Oregon who tendered that beautiful White Pearl Custom Paint Job. You cannot believe how many times I was on the verge of cancelling the Order and demanding my money back or contemplated flying up to Portland to intervene in what I considered a total lack of performance at best or suing them at worst. What was promised to me in three weeks by Tess when she took my money (of course)...turned out to be a 9 week fiasco which only ended less than an hour ago. Now to the good part. It seems that only a few minor adjustments needed to be effected to make the Bike perfect (for me) and so easy and fun to ride. Move the Seat forward. Lower the Seat. That was all. I am sure that the stench of the process will wear off in a day or two or more accurately in about 20 to 30 miles of riding time and I'm eventually going to be in love with everyone involved. Even Tess. Maybe. And maybe...just maybe, in a month or two, they'll think well of me as well." Again, I want you to know that this rant is all about Customer Service and Communication and not about the Bike that was rendered with minor adjustments. If you want a Great Bike...go to Joe Bike and get yourself a Spot Brand of any model. They are great and they have raised the bar on Production Bikes. In conclusion, I rode it two days in a row and I absolutely love it...I love looking at it, it is a piece of Mechanical Art and attracts attention wherever we go though I would have chosen Black Hubs, Black Spokes and a Black Seat Post which I replaced after the Bike arrived here in town... I should have given Joe Bike a five star review when I first bought a family bike there 3 years ago. They were awesome then, they are awesomer now. The frame on my bike cracked and Joe handled everything just as you would hope - sending it off to the manufacturer, ensuring it was covered by their warranty (it was), secured a new frame even though the bike was out of production, texted me with updates, and got it all assembled and us back on the road. It's one thing to sell great bikes (Joe does) and it's another to stand behind them three years later. Joe does that too. Highly recommended. read more

Just moved to Portland and needed a new bike. Thanks to the pandemic, there is a shortage of bikes but one caught my eye. I emailed the shop and received quick replies (on Monday, when they're closed) and arranged to test ride on Tuesday. It was a sunny day and the shop was busy! Matthew helped me out and walked me through test rides of two nice bikes that were fitted to me. I came away with a great ride, helmet and a couple of water bottles. Fantastic, no pressure service with just the right amount of attention. I love the bike and look forward to putting many miles on it. Free tune up within 90-days (break in period). Took my bike in to have a chain ring and cranks installed. They installed the items on a bottom bracket that does not fit my frame and charged me $80 for their "labor". Then recommend that I uninstall and swap the bottom bracket for one that fits my frame as intended. No phone call for verification and would not take my bike a part until a later date. Nice folks, but their service and customer service was extremely poor. Worst bike shop experience I have ever had. read more

Joe Bike was available for drop in flat tire service in the middle of the pandemic. $20 and 15 minutes later, I was on my way. They even noticed my seat was loose and out of alignment and fixed that as well. Super happy with the service. And to whomever was complaining about them requiring masks, I wouldn't have done service with them UNLESS they were wearing and requiring them - that's the only way to safely operate right now and minimize risk for everyone involved. read more

Still one of the best places to take your bike when it needs work. These guys know bikes... or, they mostly do ... I share the following anecdote so that others heed a similar red flag. On a recent trip to Joe, with a sunny day not unlike those before or after it, I was alerted to the fact that derailleur cables can NEVER be used as a straddle cable. Yeah. In what can sound like typical LBS know-it-all oration (read: elitist), I was given an explanation, short and pointed, as to why these thin cables simply couldn't be used in this capacity. Only, for years extending back much longer than the years Joe has existed, or its inhabitants have even known about bikes, derailleur cables have been used as straddle cables. Hey, don't be negative about ANY company requiring masks! This covid-19 is a serious issue, and masks help cut down on the viral load. If you get small viral load, you have a chance of developing an antibody. If you get hit with a high viral load, you won't make it. If you don't educate yourself by watching YouTube videos about the covid-19 issue (Peak Prosperity is an excellent educational source about covid-19) don't take it out on local businesses. read more

What a pleasant surprise this place was. I dropped one of my cyclocross bikes off there for what i thought was just a creaky bottom bracket and the mechanic found something wrong with the crank arm (FSA Carbon) and he got the factory to warranty it, despite its old age, for free. I was only charged for labor. I found them personable and helpful, and it's nice to see a cargo bike here that's actually built here and not in Belgium. Also, @Proofide Saddle Conditioner commenter...that company makes a 40g tin and a 25g tin. Big price difference. The 40g tin was $15.99 everywhere i found it online, including Amazon. I'll bet that's what they were selling you. I like JoeBike. read more
