Very similar vibe to Topgolf but for bowling. When I first went I was expecting a regular bowling alley but there was a lot to do. When I entered there was a live country band playing a crowd! We had reserved a alley at a time and when we showed up it was ready. Similar to Topgolf where you someone check up on you made service very quick and if I wanted another drink I could easily order it. We came here for happy hour on a Thursday and immediately loved the vibe. The outside section where the bars were was packed cause the weather was perfect. Loved the indoor/outdoor vibe. We ended up going inside later to grab a table and more drinks. This place is pretty big and has lots of room for a fun gathering with a big party, plenty of booths and tables. There's also a huge stage that they probably use to bring in entertainment. There are bowling alleys to bowl and there's also a few free skee ball games that you can play and also huge lawn games found inside as well. The kids had a great time playing!! We celebrated National Bowling Day at River City Roll! This is boutique bowling at it's finest! We had so much fun bowling, then enjoyed dinner and hanging out with the dogs on Tommie's dog-friendly Patio! My veggie burger was excellent, and I especially loved the mural of Tommie painted by The Night Owl. At one point on the lanes, our server took my husband's drink that was still over half full. There was some confusion due to our server switching out, but the former server was still on premises working in a different area and was able to confirm that she did mistakenly take the drink. With that information, our new server brought him a fresh drink without charging us again. We had a great time and will be back. read more

Went another weekend for brunch. Incredible again! Reservations are for two hour blocks of time. We came between breakfast and lunch so we were able to order off of both menus. I had the briscuit breakfast biscuit which was moist and delicious. My husband got the McRoll burger. It was super juicy! We shared the truffle fries and the fried chicken wings. The wings were crispy and not greasy. They were super tender. The fries as always were crispy and hit the spot. We shared mimosa pitchers. They have blood orange grapefruit, orange, and strawberry. RCR is a great adult hangout haven. They really do provide an elevated bowling experience. When you arrive, you go to the hostess where they take your shoe sizes. You pay by the hour for up to 2 hours and you can have up to 6 people playing per lane. After you fill out your sizes, they walk you over to the lane and someone brings out your shoes in a cute little bucket. Food here has left me pleasantly surprised. For such a casual atmosphere, they serve up pretty high quality food. The truffle fries here are crispy and addictive! Pizzas are made fresh in house and are pretty good as well. Service has been attentive and friendly every time I have visited. You also pay for your tab at your lane and with the system that they have, it's pretty seamless and the servers have no problem splitting up the bill. They do need something to dampen the noise. The former warehouse allows the sound to echo and it gets very loud. Also, all the balls are the same color. Though chic as it may be, it takes time to figure out which ball if yours. It's not too big of a deal but it gets cumbersome and you are paying by the hour here and not per game. It also gets very busy here during peak hours and weekends (over an hour wait sometimes) but they do have an electronic waitlist which is nice so you can hangout elsewhere if you like. For those who don't want to bowl, there's a couple of free games to play and a large bar to hang out at. I also like their large outdoor patio that is dog friendly. read more

LOVE this spot! I could easily give it a 4-star rating, but that'd be nit-picky. First, be prepared to wait during peak times if you want to bowl. We came on Saturday at 7 p.m. and was told the wait would be 90 minutes. It was more like 70. Meanwhile, we hung out at a table and had drinks and conversation. Second, be prepared for the LOUD, echoing noise. They had a band playing, and it was not at all enjoyable. Way. Too. Loud. The design of the building doesn't absorb sound, but reverberates it, so live bands are not a good idea. When the band was finished and recorded music (80s Hall & Oates, Steely Dan) started playing, that wasn't nearly as bad, and I much preferred. Third, be prepared for delicious food. I only sampled the fried chicken and french fries, but they were both banging! I want to try the ceviche, the burgers and so much more. I am told the chef is a former Jefferson Hotel chef, so the reason I didn't get ceviche is because... well, ceviche at a bowling alley?! I'll do it next time. Fourth, be prepared for pretty good service. While seated at tables, the servers checked on us regularly, and they're equipped with card swipers, so there's really not much wait at all checking out. Fifth, you buy lanes by the hour, not by the game. So, even if your game is not finished, it will cut off when your hour (or two) is up. Kinda sucks, but it's understandable when they have so many people behind you waiting to play. Everyone seems to have a good time. The night we went, we saw SEVERAL sloppy drunk dudes (see videos). I believe they were Lyfting, so that was smart, but they were obnoxious. One guy banged his face into a parking sign, then proceeded to throw himself on top of a car, then grinded his butt on his friend. So be prepared for this kind of fun, too. There is so much room for people to mill around. Lots of tables. Lots of bar space. Nice patio. Plenty of parking. And even though it can get crowded, you don't feel crowded or overwhelmed, or at least I didn't. My dad and I recently stopped in for a daddy/daughter bowling day. Both our first visit to RCR. We made a reservation to be on the safe side. Afternoon on a Saturday seems like a pretty good time to go if you go before happy hour. They offer good food options Towards the end a team member will come over a give you a pin to throw down the lane like a bowling ball then get to spin the wheel that hosts prizes if you knock down all the pins. I won 2 free hours of bowling good for another time! The truffle fries were yummy of course and the amaretto sour was on point. All in all good trip. Will be back again! read more

Really weird place. Staff seemed drugged out and when I asked a server if managers were present they told me that no manager showed up that day. Their employees seemed to be wondering in circles or teenage gossiping while all my daughter wanted was a sprite refill. Band's acoustics were distracting. Food had frozen chunks in it. This place is pretty cool! The atmosphere is laid back and relaxed. I enjoyed their outdoor space. They have cornhole outside which I enjoyed while I waited for the rest of my party to arrive. Be careful with the tables out there- they're pretty wobbly and I'd hate for you to spill your drink. There was a bit of a wait to bowl but that's okay. Bowling isn't like it was when I was younger with smoke filled buildings and bad food. No more smoking (as a former smoker I appreciate that) and the food has much more variety even if sometimes lacking in presentation and taste. That's the good. There is however also the bad. My son invited my wife and down to Richmond for a little fun and one of the activities was to go bowling at River City Roll. The food was very good (especially the wide varieties of pizza), reasonably priced, and the staff was very helpful and quick to bring whatever you asked for. The bowling lanes were well maintained and a wide variety of house balls of varying weights were readily available. However, the lanes themselves are narrower and shorter than regulation with flashing lights that I found very distracting. You don't bowl by the game, but based on time and if you haven't finished before time is up, that's too bad for you. I've bowled at similar places and it seems like the actual bowling is less important than just being a destination to go to. If that's what you want, then River City Roll is probably what you're looking for. I prefer standard bowling lanes and likely won't return as there's a lot of good food without disappointing bowling experiences elsewhere. read more

The approach area of the lanes feels like it's HALF the size of a traditional lane, it's also narrower. The lane I bowled on appeared to be oiled the entire way down, to the point that my ball would barely hook. I'm a 190 average bowler, but I could barely break 150 here. Absolutely massive. It had to be a warehouse previously. That's the only explanation. The bar is expansive, there are garage doors that open out to a, you guessed it, massive patio, there is a stage inside, there are two areas for bowling, and the food is full service. We did not bowl this time, so this is a food only review. We had broccolini, shrimp and grits, and jerk chicken wings. Everything was incredible! I read that the former Jefferson Hotel chef is now at River City Roll and you can tell. I am actually shocked at how great the food was. it made me want to pop in just for that! Came here for a large group event. The event coordination process was phenomenal. We had 10 lanes and catered food. Food was placed near the bar area as a buffet style. Veggies with hummus and chicken nuggets were served as appetizers. We had 5-6 different pizzas as the main course. All of the food was amazing. I was not expecting such quality food from a bowling ally. If I had to say anything negative, the chicken nuggets were a bit too salty for my liking. My favorite pizza was the Deadwood. It had roasted red peppers and spinach, sprinkled with ricotta cheese and drizzled with honey. Da bomb. Say no more and go get the pizza. Bowling: when the sun goes out, the cool lights light up in the bowling lanes. The screens in each lane are a touch screen. You can also take a picture using the screens and it will show up on the large screen on top when it's your turn. Super cool. For the service, the servers kept coming to check if we wanted more drinks and took our empty plates away. Water pitchers were placed in the corner so that we can refill our water anytime. We had waited 30 minutes for cheesecake and our time was up on the lanes. As we still hadn't received the cheesecake, we asked to cancel it and he told us no. He said it wasn't his fault, the kitchen was slow. One of our party told him that it shouldn't take 30 minutes to get a piece of prepared cheesecake. The waiter was obviously annoyed. We rarely saw him for the hour he was server and to get attitude from him was not what I expected. I will be honest that we were not charged for bowling. Boutique bowling alley? I would never associate a bowling alley as being a boutique or anything close to that. But River City Roll is definitely a bowling alley unlike any other I have been to. First off, instead of hard/plastic chairs, they actually have leather chairs and sofas to sit on while you wait/play in your lane. If you're tired of bowling, they also have Shuffleboard, skeeball and even corn hole! I came here with a group of 6 people and were able to just walk up and play almost immediately on a Saturday afternoon. It costs $35/hr on the weekends (up to 6 people) and a $4.50 shoe rental. This place is very pricey! But you do get a lot for what you pay for. Food: fries, tempura shrimp, and the 'Mister Average' Pizza. Overall all the food was surprisingly pretty tasty (for a bowling alley). The fries were fried to a crispy perfection and the pizza was tasty and not greasy. The only complaint from our group was that all the food was just a touch too salty and I agree. This place has extra tables/seating in the very front to hangout after you're finished. They also have an outdoor hangout spot that is pet friendly and also had a few lawn games set up too. This is a cool spot to hang with some friends but the high price is a deterrent for me to come often. read more

River City Roll is an adult, bowling paradise. The bowling alley is the perfect mix of old and new school. The bowling lanes, furniture and decor are very retro. I feel like I should have on a poodle skirt when I bowl here, which makes the atmosphere so light and fun. The music, food and drinks are 100% 2018. It is the best of both worlds. During the weekends they have an amazing DJ, who plays the dopest hits from today to the early 2000's. Who doesn't want to bowl to Nelly's " Country Grammer"? You do need to make a reservation if you do not want to wait forever to get a lane, especially on the weekends. It gets really crowded on the weekends and if you don't have a reservation you may not get a chance to try out the antique lanes. It is more expensive to bowl here versus Bowl America or AMF but you will enjoy yourself so much, the extra money you pay will be way worth the fun you and your friends will have. They have a bar that is inside and outside, which is perfect if you just want to come for a night cap after a movie at the Bowtie or dinner at any of the nearby restaurants. I have come to River City Roll a few times just to have a few drinks and appetizers. The bar can get crowded and sometimes your order can get lost in the sauce, but the bartenders always try their best to keep up and will make up for any mishaps. River City Roll is such a fun place to spend an evening in Richmond. My coworkers and I went on a Wednesday evening around 6:00 to catch the tail end of happy hour. The happy hour prices were super reasonable and the fries we got were out of this world. Super tasty! While we were enjoying our food and drinks, we filled out a card with our names and shoe sizes. We didn't wait long to be called back to our lane where our shoes were waiting in a wire basket and our names programmed into the system so we could start bowling immediately. You pay by the hour, not the game, so we jumped right in. My only complaints were that the people in the lane next to us were really drunk and really got into our space. There is not a lot of room at the lanes, so it was a little frustrating to have a bunch of drunk guys walking around us, putting their stuff on our table, and storing their shoes on our half of the area. It would have been nice for our server to remind the guys to stay in their own space. It was also really loud - the music is played at full blast and combines with the bowling sounds, so it's hard to hear others. Pricing here is reasonable if you come in a group. We paid $25 per hour, plus about $5 each for shoes. Since the $25 is split among all the players, we ended up having to pay less than $5 individually. Coupled with happy hour, it was a really fun, not so expensive night out. Parking is ample, the food is great, and the atmosphere is top notch. I highly recommend River City Roll. read more

I actually never really frequented RCR before COVID but I have been coming since they re-opened and it's one of the only places that I have felt comfortable going to. They are doing a great job with their COVID precautions. The tables are very spread out on the patio and inside they have these great booths that literally enclose your group, which is so nice! They also have masks available around the restaurant as well as many hand sanitizer stations. I have been going only for happy hour which is really great. They have $3 rails and select drafts and $4 drinks/wine as well. It runs from 3-6 Tuesday-Sunday I believe, honestly, what better than a happy hour on the weekend? We signed in with our names and shoe sizes, and got drinks and appetizers on the large outdoor patio. We tried the truffle fries & the Lily pizza. Both were great! The fries were delicious. The only criticism I have is that the pizza seemed a little underdone. They text you a wait time and you can follow the link to see your place in line! They will text you again once it's your turn. We checked back in at the front desk and were escorted to our lane with a large couch and coffee table! Immediately, a server came over to take any orders for more drinks.
