I wouldn't have known about this place until I was gifted with a free 2-piece chocolate sample of my chose. I walked in and it brings back memories of my childhood. Old School favorites that I enjoyed as a kid. I walked around mesmerized by the specialized, unique flavors of chocolate, gummies and many other goodies. The candy store serves up chocolate with liquor, coffee, latte, ice cream and other delicious treats that will water your mouth. I selected my 2 pieces of chocolate and purchase some additional treats. I handed the lady behind the counter my money and in return to lays my change down on the counter. I put my hands out for her to place it in my hands. Unfortunately, she missed the hint. She looked down at the money for me to pick it up myself. I believe in supporting small neighborhood businesses. The 3-star review that I'm giving is for the wonderful display of candies from my childhood and the warmth I felt in my heart. There is not another store like this in the area, believe me, I checked. They had done favors for our High School reunion which were delicious and even had the school logo on the front. So I called and spoke to Donna, the owner. Fortunately I did not need these favors before the holidays because she was crazy busy. We spoke on the phone and she texted photos of different suggestions. There were 3 that made the final selection so I decided to bite the bullet and drive to River Forest. I walked into the smell of chocolate, heavenly even at 10 in the morning. Donna and I discussed the pros and cons for each one. Final decision was made, then boxing options were needed. Boxes decided, then filler was needed. Final decision made, order placed, pick-up date decided, no down payment required, and just call if there was a change in the final number. It could not have been any smoother or more professionally completed. Oh yes, I did have to make a quick purchase from the case for instant gratification ~ delicious. What a charming little shop. Larger than the other chocolatier in River Forest (and with much easier parking as it's off the main drag). There is a selection of chocolates and truffles; hand-dipped dark- or milk-coated ice cream bars; and some old-timey type candies and a few surprises (Cadbury Flake, which the owner bought in the UK). Small selection of sugar-free. I picked up some Necco wafers, which will be unfindable soon as the factory's closing; some chocolates and truffles. They feature both molasses chews and chocolate-covered nougat, which one doesn't find everywhere. The chocolates are perhaps a bit sweet for me, but this is true of most American-style chocolates, and they're very nice. The chocolate-covered cherries are enormous and must have been very fresh, as the fondant hadn't turned to liquid yet. The lady behind the counter was charming and very well-informed about candy. This place is very adorable and delicious. They have a great selection of truffles, echolocate-covered treats, gift boxes and seasonal sets. It's perfect for indulging strangers (a haul once fell out of our stroller in downtown Oak Park and was gone when I double backed ), love ones, or just yourself. I went in looking to get some tasty gifts for some friends and thought this local shop would be a good option. The woman working there coldly greeted me and just stood and stared at me while I browsed, not asking if I needed any help. It was uncomfortable and I wanted to leave but thought maybe I was misreading things. But when another customer came in and received a warm welcome and assistance, I left. There is a sign by the door of the store encouraging support of local businesses, but why would I pay a business to treat me coldly? At least online companies don't overtly discriminate against their customers or make them feel unwelcome while they shop. I prefer to shop local businesses, and most of the time the customer service makes it worth it and then some, but from time to time there are those businesses who I guess have weird hang ups about some people (or with people generally) and, well, I'm not paying for that. read more

No matter how busy they are, they take the time to find the perfect gift you need! Last Christmas they filled what appeared to be an empty beautiful red & gold book with the chocolates of my selection to the delight of a relative who loves books & chocolate. I hope they have these again this Holiday. Recently Bonita helped with a phone order for a 90th birthday for mAunt who is a nun & loves chocolate. Bonita was so helpful over the phone making suggestions & agreeing to tie up the boxes with a beautiful gold ribbon. Love this place & their products! read more

River Forest Chocolates is a great little spot to grab some wonderful chocolate treats in River Forest. The old front door shows its age and character by sticking(you need to be "buzzed" in). From the street, the store appears, perhaps, more botique than it needs to, but walk in and have a look around. There are delicious and whimsical chocolate items throughout the store. There's also a nice section full of the more pop-culture "classic" candies, including Cracker Jack in a throwback looking box(it made me wonder if the "Prize inside" was a metal toy, or, at least a hard plastic one...). A variety of molds are utilized. Some include: Pianos(perfectly proportioned little chocolate pianos); Cameos(they actually look like jewelry); Cappucino Cups that look like miniature cups of cappucino; there were so many others...I don't remember... There were many different truffles, caramels, creams, toffees, barks, and more... I grabbed two Pretzel Wands - one milk chocolate, one white chocolate - and one Cappucino Cup. All three were delicious. I've got to keep going back to discover my favorites. Every town should have a shop like this. Street parking is available throughout the neighborhood. read more

Wish I had a better experience a couple weeks ago. I went in on my way home after work. I'm Asian. I went in and the lady greeted me and walked away. Then as I'm in there for a few minutes I ask about the truffles in their case, she answers and walks away; she didn't ask if I was interested or if I had any other questions. I walk around in the store a little more. Then another lady walks in and she is white, asks for a recommendations for a box of chocolates for a family party. The employee was more attentive to the other white lady and customizes a box of chocolates and truffles. I ask a couple more questions and she answers them and walks away again; she doesn't ask if I was interested in other things or anything. Goes back to the other customer, and helps them more then me. I forgot I walk in with a North Face winter coat and the other lady comes in raggedy Ugg like boots and workout clothing. As that happens I feel that the atmosphere is a little off. Does anyone think this? The employee helps the white customer more then an Asian customer. She also gave a very uncomfortable stare too! read more

I was not impressed with the chocolates. When I walked in I was greeted by a very nice and polite lady who was very attentive. I asked her if she was the owner of the business and she said no she was not and the owner was not in right now. Cute shop and decorated nicely but some of the items that were out on display looked to me like I have seen them before in other stores or at least the same theme. Some of the chocolates in the display case looked like they were old or maybe in their for a while, you know when chocolate is old it gets a white film or hue on it. I did purchase a few chocolates and they were just ok nothing to brag about. The taste had a different texture to them and I did not care for them. I tried the Toffee because the associate said that is one of their popular sellers. It was good but that was about it. I believe in supporting small businesses but this is one I will pass on. I stopped in to pick up a box of chocolates for my dad's birthday -- my first time at the shop, and I can't wait for an excuse to go back! It is a really cute, welcoming space, overflowing with all sorts of goodies and gifts -- you're sure to find something for whomever you are shopping for, and something for yourself, too! The lady working at the counter (I've forgotten her name) was SO helpful in helping me select chocolates for my dad! I wasn't sure what I wanted, so I told her the sorts of flavors my dad tends to gravitate toward and she made really good suggestions. I ended up getting a little bag of sweets for myself too, including an adorable and delicious tiny cappuccino made entirely out of chocolate. You also can't go wrong with the peanut butter cups or the squares of either PB or caramel sprinkled with salt. I'll have to return to try the truffles. I was also really impressed with how the sales associate (and then the owner) helped an elderly lady put together a care package for a friend. They were very patient and realistic about what would survive being mailed to Florida. They talked her out of buying a really expensive chocolate Easter bunny that they worried would melt on the delivery truck, which was so thoughtful. They truly care about their customers and about making lovely chocolates. Oh, and it was supremely affordable!!! They prepared a small bucket full of chocolates and more, including a personalized piece recognizing the occasion. I was very impressed with the quality of the candies and didn't hesitate to eat all the leftovers when I found I had ordered too many buckets. Donna, the owner, recommended I try their English Toffee. I purchased a box for myself and once opened, had great difficulty putting it down. I am a chocolate lover which means I've had a fair amount of chocolates. I went into the store looking for chocolate covered gummy bears and orange peels. Not many chocolate stores have chocolate covered gummy bears, but they did! I also got some chocolates from the glass case which included some orange peels and other chocolates. The good: The gummy bears were delicious and were chewy with a delicious chocolate coating. Costumer service was also very good since no one else was in the store. The bad: The chocolates in the glass case. They were dry, old and almost tasteless. After taking a couple of bites, I could tell the chocolate had been sitting there for a long time. I am willing to pay a premium for good chocolate but they missed the boat. I would think a chocolate store would have fresh made chocolates, but this wasn't the case. I may be back for the gummy bears, but nothing else. read more

I love this candy store and it's employees! I come here to get gifts for my adult kids for various occasions-Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentines Day, Easter etc. You can purchase candy, nut and coffee gifts already made up or grab a basket or whatever and make your own. The women are so personable and helpful. I had ordered 40 pre-wrapped chocolate booties for a baby shower. When the manufacturer could not honor the order, a mold was purchased and Donna and her employees made the booties and hand decorated them to look like a real baby boy's booties. They were much better looking than the ones I originally ordered. I stop by there often and am always pleasantly surprised that each visit is different than the last. read more

The shop is cute. The lady who helped me was lovely. The chocolates though I'm afraid are not as good as I had hoped.. I see they've gotten rave reviews for novelty chocolates- and I don't doubt that from the items in the shop. I tasted a hazelnut truffle- it had no flavor other than sugar. The interior was not a traditional truffle filling, more like a chewy cream filling. The pistachio truffle had the same chewy texture. It did have a some pistachio flavor. Neither seemed to have actual nuts, I assume it was liquid flavoring perhaps? Same with mint. No mint flavor , a stiff almost fudge like center. The salted Caramel was tasty. Good buttery flavor in the caramel. The chocolates are tooth aching sweet I'm afraid. Too bad. read more
