Best popcorn and friendly service. Long time patron of the Oak Park shop. The fact that it's peanut and treenut free was the initial draw (including the ice creams) but it's now transcended into being not just our family but our extended families favorite as well. We send so many tins all over the US every Christmas. We've only had one issue with a new employee (they hire local high schoolers) that while really nice, kinda messed up our order. I've been a customer of Wells popcorn for years, primarily at the Clark St location in the city and now that the closest location after the closing of the Chicago store is in Oak Park I've frequented the establishment several times since. Spending an exorbitant amount of money, especially as gifts and treats for my business for events that I have, I can say that I'm so disappointed with the service. The attitude, on two different occasions makes for a very unpleasant experience for what should be a delightful treat, and this last visit was even worse. Carter assisted me with a nearly $210 order of gifts/tins and took the liberty to add an almost $50 unauthorized tip and I never would have even known if I hadn't asked for a receipt. Asking to speak with a manager, as it was close to end of day closing, I have still not received a call to get it reversed and express my sheer disappointment. I am always one to reward hardworking individuals in the service industry as I have immense respect for the people within that field but this was truly an unreal experience that needs to be addressed especially with a iconic institution such as Wells St Popcorn. read more

They might stay in business just for the iconic Chicago blend and the smells. The popcorn is good, but it two two times to go in to get any service. The first time we went, we stood there and called for assistance with no answer. Today there were people working upfront, but they don't honor the Yelp check in bonus of a free medium bag and a drink. Another cute little gem in Oak Park. I was gifted to purchase one of their plastic container of popcorn. The young guy behind the counter was friendly and had good customer service skills. I ordered the mix popcorn with the caramel and cheese. The guy told me this was one of their hot sellers in the store. My only complaint is that my popcorn were dry and stale. I was so disappointed that I had to trash my popcorn. I'm not sure how long the popcorn has to stay out. Neither less to say this wasn't good popcorn. read more

Wells St. Popcorn is not the place to go for good popcorn. They claim the popcorn is made fresh daily. When I walked into the store it didn't smell like popcorn at all, so you know they don't pop it everyday. I had a Groupon for a trio of their popcorn and chose buttered, caramel and cheddar. All were a disappointment! The buttered and cheddar were both stale, the caramel had so many unpopped seeds stuck to the popped and coated in caramel that made it hard to eat and I feared I would chip a tooth! It's good, though not quite as good as the Downtown stalwart that it's imitating. Still, you won't have to wait in line so maybe it balances out. I think there was a recent change in ownership. Carmel corn is excellent, the fresh popped buttered popcorn good, and the cheese popcorn is okay. Other snacks available but this is a popcorn shop. read more

Saturday I spent $40 on 1 gallon popcorn tin and it was soooo stale. I will not visit this location again.

TLDR: Stale popcorn; go elsewhere Firstly, the guy at the counter didn't have a mask on when I entered the establishment. I mean I understand if you're standing there all day with no customers, it can be cumbersome to wear a mask, but it made me uneasy from the moment I came in. Then the clerk quickly put his mask on upon seeing me. I didn't want to go all the way downtown to the other popcorn company, so I thought I'd give this one a try. Though the prices are less than the other place, they are still fairly high. But the quality of the popcorn is not worth it, at all. The flavor was fine, but the popcorn tasted stale. It was so hard to chew and I didn't even finish the bag. I considered asking for a refund but let it go. Either way, beware of this place. Just make the trip downtown. read more

I tried the classic Chicago mix and thought it was pretty good. The cheese flavoring was delicious and the caramel was generously applied to the popcorn. The ratio was a bit off as I was overwhelmed with caramel in comparison to the cheese. Delicious popcorn at a price that's typical for Oak Park shops. I love the 'value bags' (snack sizes) which let you sample one of their flavors without getting a giant serving. I've never seen anyone else in here when I'm buying movie snax, but I gotta believe they do fair business from popcorn in gift tins. I've tried the bacon cheddar (good), jalapeno chipotle (great), and caramel apple (freakin' amazing). The only thing stopping me from re-upping on popcorn more often is the high price point. I don't get this place. I didn't understand why it opened about four years ago. I went in again for my second visit the other day and I still don't get it. Unless the store's name is Garrett, I don't understand a store dedicated only to popcorn. Well, Madly Poppin' was pretty pimpin', but it closed soon after Wells Street Popcorn opened. It's popcorn. Nothing to write home about for the butter or cheese flavors. The caramel popcorn is a little chewy and sticks in my teeth. I hated it. When I went in last week, they had a sign out for a special flavor. I asked if I could buy it but they were out. Gosh. If you're out, wouldn't you bring the sign in from the sidewalk? Knowing that I hated their caramel, I got a medium butter and cheese mix. It was about $4. The lady put it in a wax-paper lining and then put it inside of a paper bag. The lining was too stuffed to roll closed for extra freshness. Oh - and the customer service wasn't that great. I mean, they have never been rude, but they also have never been warm, welcoming, or friendly. It was good enough that I ate the entire bag by myself while watching a movie at home; however, I don't think it was worth it. I can easily make my own popcorn and flavor it anyway I want. read more

This place has been open since March, but I only noticed it when Five Guys Burgers opened up next door. The owner says he hears that a lot. And really, what is better after a big greasy lunch than some nice fresh caramel corn? Being obviously kind of full, I ordered the smallest size, which I thought was a bit pricey at $2.50. But the product was delicious and the portion was plentiful. I am one of those poor sods who spent an otherwise brilliant Chicago afternoon standing in line at Garrett's because my friends wanted to. Service was friendly and the prices ok. Got some cheese popcorn and a bag of kettle corn. The kettle corn was great. The cheese tasted good when I first had a few bites, but once I got home and had some more, all I could taste was grease. The warm carmel corn is to die for as well as the kettle corn (just enough salt and sugar). I just wouldn't recommend their cheese. Maybe it was a bad batch, I just know that I ended up give some to my dog and throwing the rest out for the birds. I have never in my life eaten plain white popcorn with SUGAR in it until I came here! Had I KNOWN it was made with sugar I would not have purchased it! That is the only kind of white popcorn that is ready to buy - SUGARY WHITE POPCORN. If you want REGULAR WHITE POPCORN WITHOUT SUGAR YOU HAVE TO ORDER IT IN ADVANCE. What am I missing here? The girl working there was very nice and very attentive. Loved that they offer free samples on the different flavors! Don't get that at Garrett's! Our first visit, to the area after having a tour of the FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S House, and meeting my sister's college alumni friends then having Indian,Pakistani food from Khyber Pass . Then while visiting the Fitzgerald's Fine Stationery shop in the strip of shops we saw the green awing across the street. We stopped in and they had a chalkboard of the flavors they were selling. My eyes went to the other counter and saw BACON CARMEL POPCORN. We bought the tub of Pink cotton candy flavored Vanilla . Then she bought a Medium Chicago Mix popcorn. I just almost inhaled the hole bag. It smells like bacon when you open it. Plus it tastes like bacon. The Carmel is chewy and sticks to your teeth just the way a good Carmel corn is suppose to do. I would not return to Wells Street Popcorn to satisfy my gourmet popcorn cravings. One, and most importantly, the popcorn itself (we tried the caramel/cheddar mix and a small bag of the specialty chocolate drizzle) was stale. STALE! It could be that we got the last of the batch but still, what a disappointment. And secondly, the teenage girl manning the store was unfriendly and inattentive (checking her phone the whole time, didn't listen to what we said so that we had to repeat our order/questions three times, etc.) Wells Street really made me appreciate how glorious Garretts truly is. read more

We were on a weekend drive and this was one of the stops we made along the way. It is a bit far for us but there are other cute shops in the area. I can imagine this area is hopping in the summer but it was a cold Sunday and seemed very quiet for lunch time. We ordered the Chicago Mix in their plastic containers - GREAT. The popcorn was typical to other places one might go but they had a better selection of ways to purchase. You could buy a bag or a tin (again like the other place, everyone knows) but you could also buy in plastic jars with a screw on lid. So much more air tight than other options. They also had a small selection of specialty flavors in snack size bags, nice. read more

Oh oh, Garrett's in trouble. I am starting to hate traveling to the city more and more. Now, I discovered a popcorn joint in my area. No more standing in line at the Metra station on Friday to get a bag before heading back to the 'burbs. May I suggest moving to Forest Park. Parking in Oak Park is becoming like Chicago. I am pretty sure the rent will be cheaper too. I park and leave my blinkers on and run in real quick. I would love to walk around Oak Park and enjoy the little shops without worrying about parking. Wish I could give this place a better rating, because I really do love the popcorn and location, but on my latest trip last week a mouse ran across the floor as I was checking out. The cashier, who saw the mouse too, says to me "did you see that" and I said "yes" and then he just kind of laughed about it and proceeded to process my credit card. I kind of shrugged off the incident (it's cook county, there's bound to be mice right?) but later when I opened the popcorn I began to wonder whether the store's mice venture into the popcorn bins.
