Stopped in tonight with questions and hoping to see the facility. I have two small chihuahuas. I am out of town often and have always wondered what this place was like. From the street you can see 10 or so dogs unsupervised locked up in a room. I mentioned to the young lady at the desk that I have two small dogs that would not fair well being put in the room with the general public. I was then informed that there were private rooms. I said that might be an option and asked if I could see one. "Oh no, we don't let the public in there are pictures online." I asked her if she was serious and thought that I would just drop my dogs in a place site unseen and leave them. She responded with an attitude that people do it all the time. I asked her " assuming she had a pet" as a pet owner, would you just leave your dog in a place that you have only seen pictures of? Are you kidding? I can't understand how any responsible pet owner would drop their dog off in a place that they were not able to see with their own eyes. What a disappointing first encounter with River Pet Resort. In my mind, If you are a well run, properly staffed, legit and clean business you should want nothing more than to encourage potential clients to see your facility and show them around. Seems shady to me. Anyone who accepts the pictures on line as confirmation that they are leaving their pet in clean and safe environment should probably not be a pet owner. Would you leave your child in a facility that you have never seen before but was told there are pictures on line? I would hope not! read more

The rooms are small and dirty, they are left alone so much of the time and you have to pay extra for socializing. Not a good experience. My dog was terrified and panting when I picked him up. read more

Great pet facility. They took care of my cat and dog when we were away for a week and the introduction process was great. Everything was well explained, discussed every detail. They were so kind in answering every and all question I had about my fur babies. Really great place. And clean too. I saw them mopping up twice, just when I was there. When it came time to pick them, it took them time to get both of them. But I did not tell them I would be back early on a Sunday. And there were other pets waiting. But they were very prompt and safety comes first so I definitely can appreciate. For this reason alone I would continue to use them. Along with the way they make you feel welcome and comfortable. May not be the cheapest option, but its the safest and only one as far as I am concerned. read more

I can't believe I haven't already written a review for River Pet. I have been entrusting River Pet with my dogs for the last 10 years. The staff is excellent and very attentive. Yes, if the staff is checking a dog in or out, the doors are locked and you are not able to come into the business. This is the safety of the dogs which are often loose in the lobby - so that they do not escape when the door is open and end up outside. Yes, It is a bit pricey, but in my experience, the pricing is pretty standard for the market and you get what you pay for. I know that it is owned by a veterinarian and affiliated with my dogs' vet - Animal General. I feel good knowing that if something happens my dogs can get immediate medical care. Only once did I ever board my dogs at a different facility - and when I did my dog Lucky died the second day of my Hawaii vacation. That was horrible. I know my dogs love the staff at River Pet (and vice versa!), the rooms that we book are spacious, and I feel great about knowing that they are safe when I have to go away. I am always referring friends to River Pet when they need to find someone to take care of their dogs while they go on vacation. read more

This review is for my recent experience boarding my two senior dogs at River Pet. I usually have my dogs stay at home when I go away and use a reliable dog walker with additional visits from friends and family. A few weeks before my last vacation my eldest dog suffered a serious setback and lost most of his mobility and had a lot of issues going to the bathroom. I had made arrangements for in-home care but had to cancel as Charlie really required more care than could have been provided. I decided to take my dogs at River Pet because it is associated with our vet and I knew they would keep an eye on him and the caregivers are familiar with caring for senior dogs with issues. Another factor which influenced my decision was that boarding pets get 4 walks a day which is perfect for an older dog. I was a mess dropping my dogs off (they had never been boarded before) and unsatisfied with the initial amount of status reports provided via email. But after the first day or two I started receiving daily updates unsolicited and this made me a bit easier. When I went to pick-up my dogs (9 DAYS LATER) they were perfectly chill and happy to see me. Almost too chill. They usually complain or act up when I get home from vacation, but they just came out from the back quietly and gave me kisses. Fast forward to about three months later, I took both of my dogs to the vet next door to pick up some dog food and then to River Pet to see if they had a special mobility harness I needed. When we went inside both of my dogs were super excited and gave the two people working up front an enthusiastic greeting. The staff working remembered my dogs' names and gave them lots of love. Watching this whole interaction honestly warmed my heart. River Pet was a life saver and I will definitely use them again if I go away. In terms of expense, boarding both my dogs was about 1/3 more expensive than hiring a pet sitter to stay at my place, and 2/3's more than paying for two walks a day from my dog walkers. While it is certainly an expense to take into consideration when planning a trip, I found it to be a very worthwhile. read more

No Recommendation At All!!! I board my one year old husky there twice. First time seems fine. For the second time, I boarded him for 5 days, I paid boarding and day camping, which means he suppose to be outside playing with other dogs during daytime. The result is they kept him all the time in his own little room. The only time they let him out is after I called them and asked why I did not see him in web came. (After the call, they let him out for about 1 hour.) After my husky came home, I found there are blood all over his paws(he has been stretching the door and wants to be out the whole time!!!) I can't believe I paid nearly $800 dollars for 5 days and the service I received is the WORST I can imagine. NEVER GO BACK TO THIS PLACE!!! read more

I've brought my dog, Oliver, to River Pet for over 9 years. They have always been a great resource for dog-sitting when I've been in a pinch. That being said, I will never take my dog there again! During our last visit, my dog was bite by another dog unprovoked. River Pet did not contact me immediately after this happened nor did they contact my vet of record. Edgewater Animal hospital checked my dog but provided sub par care. After 3 days of my dog crying (post-incident), I took him to my own Vet who said my dog should have received stitches, antibiotics and painkillers. River Pet has not reimbursed me for the any part of the bill I have running nearing $800. I would not recommend this place to anyone! It's not worth the potential harm to your dog or hit to your wallet! read more

My friend and I came in here today to check out the pet resort she normally goes to a place in Jersey City which is all decked out with lovely furniture and art and she's paying an arm and a leg so we connected this place out unfortunately someone that was upfront went to the back for a moment but did add knowledge that we had walked in and my friend didn't like the fact that you couldn't exactly see what was going on behind so she quickly wanted to leave I did peek through the window of this place and what I did see there were people handling the dogs pretty nicely they were each separated Although I couldn't make out what types of dogs and cats were in this hotel it looks like an OK place but I think most pet owners would agree it's very nice to be able to see or glimpse into the back but then again we didn't ask for a tour so I would give this a four-star just based on our visit I am uncertain of my friends intentions with her dog My friend lives nearby in the Alexander and just moved in I need to find a place for when she travels and this was the first place we checked out read more

I used to use riverpet up until recently. I'll start with the good: there are cameras so you can check up on your little furkids throughout the day, the location is conveniently located right next to a pet store and animal clinic, and most of the staff were friendly. The not so good is that they are quite pricy. What drove me to put one star is due to my most recent visit. During lunch i enjoy watching my little one play with the other dogs, only this time she wasn't playing. She was begging to be taken out for a walk. This went for about 20 minutes and no one thought to take her out. When she couldn't hold it any longer, she peed on the floor and walked into the other room with her head down and ears back against her head. I called and spoke with some lady who gave me an attitude and told me she had just taken my dog out for a walk. When i asked how long ago is just, she asked me if i was confused or something. I told her just what i said above and she still didn't care that i literally watched them neglecting my and other peoples dogs. I was disgusted and will never take my furkid back to this place. The time before this one, i brought my dog here, she picked up a cough for a week and when i called in about it they instantly blamed another source. I should have taken that as a sign of things to come. I wish the best for all pets who still ho here, but i ask that you as parents watch your furkids and don't let them get neglected! read more

I took my puppy there for daycare and everytime I would pick her up she would be damp and smelled liked a dirty mop. The last time I picked her up I saw that they mop the floor while the dogs are walking around hence my dog being damp and smelly. Its not a very sanitary place. I have been bringing my dog (Shina) here for the past 2 years and I cannot say enough about the wonderful staff and services available. I have used grooming, doggy day care and boarding services and ALL ARE EXCELLENT. My dog LOVES coming here because of all the love and attention she receives. There has not been one bad experience. The employees who work here have a passion for taking care of animals and it shows! This company also has a webcam and offers remote access so you can see your pet when traveling. I've been meaning to write this for a while. I had to go out of town for about 8 days so we boarded our dog here. When my husband picked her up from the kennel she had fleas and was covered in urine. She also had sores - I think from both the urine irritating her skin as well as a reaction to the fleas. The employees weren't even spending enough time with my dog to realize either of these things even though it was obvious to me within about 10 seconds. I brought my dog back to the kennel and asked them to smell my dog. She reeked of urine, which was especially upsetting because I had told them that my dog can be aggressive and I didn't want her to around the other dogs. Either they ignored that request or their facility is so covered in urine that my dog was still affected. I actually felt like this was an abusive situation and there is no way I will ever trust this establishment with my pets again. read more

My husband and I had our dogs (we have two) board here over a recent weekend when we had to travel out of town. I have nothing negative to say - it was a 100% positive experience. I wish I had asked, but I don't know the name of the woman that greeted us. She took the time to explain the entire boarding process in great detail, provided us with the paperwork and walked us through all of the options for the stay. I also like that the Resort is owned by a Vet and they're affiliated with Animal General, our regular Vet. It's nice knowing that they have medical staff available in the event your pet needs that sort of attention. That was the biggest 'selling' point for my husband and I. We wanted to make sure that my dogs would have access to medical care if needed while we were away. read more

My precious Scooch, a ten year old white Schnauzer, has bone cancer. I had a heart wrenching decision to make before a long planned family trip. Either to euthanize him, skip the trip altogether, or leave him at a kennel. At my grown children's urging, I decided to leave Scooch at River Pet. I cannot thank the staff at River Pet enough for the care and attention they gave to Scooch. He requires medication, rest, and lots of TLC. They took absolutely wonderful care of him, and I am so very grateful to have more time, however long or short, to spend with Scooch. I am also grateful that I was able to go on my trip and enjoy my children and grandchildren on this long awaited holiday. Thank you River Pet for allowing me to do that. read more

I passed by there this evening to inquire about boarding services and was basically ignored. First, I rang bell and and red-haired woman motioned for me to wait. I patiently waited outside while she chatted with a customer . After more than 5 minutes, she opens the door and does not say hello but rather walks away and acts like I'm not there- She goes on talking to the other person and avoiding eye contact and I ask her if she has any information about boarding- she still doesn't bother to open her mouth but rather points toward some business cards- I say you know "I think you are very rude to just ignore me" and she says to me that she is busy and there is a dog off the leash and then proceeds to continue chatting with other woman- Long story short, I've never been in a more unprofessional environment with arrogant staff. If that's how they treat people I can't imagine how they must treat animals- For now I will stick to Boca's Doggie Daycare in Jersey City/Guttenberg which has really positive energy all around and very congenial employees who are happy to explain their services. read more

This is probably the first Yelp review I've done where I went through the trouble of adding the business to Yelp - River Pet is that good! We've used River Pet a few times now to board our dog when we go away. I cannot speak highly enough of this company and its employees. Our dog has allergies and also compulsively scratches/licks herself raw. When she woke up one morning during her stay at River Pet with welts, one of the employees took it upon herself to hold a cold compress to her wounds - and they also went over to her vet (which is located in the same strip mall as this boarder is) and got her special shampoo to give her a soothing bath. It gives us a great deal of peace of mind to know that the employees are that dedicated to our dog's comfort and that they are affiliated with a vet's office, so that they can just run over if needbe. Another great feature is that you can watch your dog on their videocam if you have them in doggie daycare! It was fun to see our dog running around happily while we were away. Whenever we call to book, they recognize our dog immediately and are extremely kind and helpful. Their space is impeccable and their rates are reasonable considering the kind of care and comfort your dog receives. read more

I also have seen dogs left unattended in a locked room. That scares me. Today, I saw a bunch of dogs alone in the front room and one had mounted another and was having his way with her. This should not be going on in daycare and this is why there should be supervision. I would never leave my dog there. There are so many other places in the area to go to. read more

I have been taking my dog to River Pet for day camp for about 2 years now. He goes every day Monday through Friday for a few hours just for socialization and activity. River Pet's staff has gone above and beyond to make my pet, who is very nervous, and me feel incredibly comfortable! Every staff member is clearly an animal lover! They take the time to get to know the pets and their behaviors. If ever they notice anything they are sure to let me know as soon as I arrive for pick up. Our vet is just a few doors down and the staff are always going in between making it very easy to keep up with vaccines, medications, etc. Even after moving out of Edgewater I continue to bring my dog to this location because of their devotion to the individual pets. In addition to the day camp River Pet also offers field trips! My pup has been on several hiking excursions. They also offer other fun activities throughout the year such as the Halloween costume party where ALL of the pups come back dressed up (too cute!) and birthday parties for the pets. On my dog's birthday they hung up photos, streamers balloons and a banner. It was SO sweet! Everyone here truly loves what they do and it shows! The facility is clean, friendly and thorough. I had dropped off my pet there for a weekend, and the staff was all over the place, like they were unorganized. but the lady assured me my pet would be fine, so then I agreed to leave my pet, then when I arrived to pick up my pet, pets were unattended, I fell this is a bad place to drop off your pet for a weekend. I am a traveling physical therapist who travels with my 6 pound toy poodle. I have taken my dog to various doggy daycares and boarding places throughout JT travels and River Pet Resort is by far the best! Having a 6 pound dog, I am often weary of leaving her with just anyone and in daycare groups that include all sizes of dogs. I have never had to worry about her while she's at River Pet. The staff is attentive and caring. My dog loves everyone at River Pet! We will be sad to be leaving them once my contract is over in NJ and hope to be back soon! read more

My dog has stayed here many times for boarding and daycare which seem okay. Every employee is friendly and polite except for the small Latino woman. She always seems to have an attitude. Never greets and acts very bothered when responding to any of my questions. I have not seen her in the recent months but I had to write this long overdue review because I do not appreciate this kind of customer service as a loyal customer. People generally write reviews when they have a bad experience. I only got to this site today when I was checking the hours of operation. As a former resident of NJ, I had boarded my dogs at River Pet many times. My dogs were also treated by the doctors at Animal General. I was more than satisfied with the attention and care my pets always were given. I no longer live in NJ, but when I travel there with my Lab, I leave her at RIVER PET for one day just for the interaction and fun she has. Might I add, that I drive with her from Cleveland. We stay in hotels and she is very dear to me. I understand there might be some concern when someone looks in the window and sees dogs gathering together and maybe even some mounting going on. Well, people, these are dogs.. This is what they do. Even if someone were in the space watching them 24/7, there really isn't that much that they can do about the mounting. Try to break it up, yes, but it will happen. In the case of the door being locked, sometimes there is only one person in attendance and dogs do need to be walked. They are walked in a grassy area, not at all far from the storefront. I will be traveling again with my Lab and will be leaving her there for one day. She will have a ball and I'll be comfortable. read more

We dropped off our dog with River Pet Resort for 2 days over the Memorial Day holiday. The staff was very pleasant and the conditions there were excellent. We were able to watch our pup on the webcam throughout the weekend and it looked as if he and all the other dogs were having a fantastic time. They are also quite affordable, especially as an option just outside of NYC. Would definitely recommend their daycare and overnight boarding. read more

This is the most amazing place to bring your dog! My dog has been coming here since she was 6 weeks old and we have NEVER questioned them. They are so thoughtful and caring! She threw up the first time we had her there and the vet came over to take her temperature and check her out- plus they called us to keep us posted. Our puppy LOVES going- she literally throws herself out of the car when we pull into the parking lot. All the staff know her by name and she gives them all kisses when she seems them. I love that they don't have cages and each dog has their own room- that was very important to me. The play area is bright, clean and spacious. Also, the dogs are always supervised! Even if you don't see the person they are aware of what is going on and have dogs grouped accordingly. read more

I feel like this place overcharges.The price I've been quoted hasn't reconciled with what I was charged at least three times. Not sure if this is due to the chronic air of disorganization on the premises or something more sinister. On the plus side, the staff seem genuinely interested in the welfare of the pets. I pass by River Pet often on my way to other stores. I would never leave my puppy there. I often see dogs unattended there. I've even seen a bunch of dogs in the front room with the door closed and no person in there watching them.... dogs small to huge in that front room with no one watching and the door closed. If you stand outside and watch for a few minutes you will see what I mean. read more

I have used this facility for years. I moved 20 miles away and still drive all the way here to board my dog. When my Golden was a Senior they took her in the pool and gave her meds and called me in Europe to see if I knew how "stiff" she was. They are extremely attentive and caring for the animals. If they are appear to be unsupervised, I am pretty sure someone has their eyes on them. I still bring my Pug here, even though my Golden has passed away. They always know who I am when I call and my dog remembers them and goes in very willingly. He also is never distressed when I pick him up. You can have your dog in "camp" for an hour a day or all day. If it seems to hectic for your dog, it's not mandatory. They dogs stay in rooms instead of cages and are allowed to stay together if you have two. The owner is a vet and her husband's practice is in the same shopping center. It seems like the people posting negative reviews have never actually been clients here, but are making judgements based on walking by. The only reason I held one star is that they are extremely expensive, charge for every little thing- it's not for everyone, but if you can afford it, it is a very high quality facility. read more

My 2 cats stayed at River Pet for 3 months due to our house fire last March. The entire staff and owner of the facility were amazing. The cats are very old and require a lot of medication. They were always proactive in calling me with questions and reminding me to visit. I can't thank them enough for their efforts. I've been taking my dog Stanley here for almost a year. He absolutely loves it and the staff is wonderful! He has a lot of energy and after I pick him up he can sleep for two days. I love that he is socialized with both larger and smaller dogs. I prefer this to places that separate by size. Stanley has learned to be more gentle with smaller dogs and not intimidated by big dogs. What a great find this place was! The staff is very friendly, very capable, responsible and professional. I have used the Resort when I travel and/or when the weather's not so great - as it was this year - and my mini dachshund needed some canine interaction and play time to burn off her cabin fever. The facility is clean and offers a variety of accommodations for a short or long stay. They have a working relationship with a veterinary practice (Animal General) a couple of doors down from their facility which can be helpful if your pet get's ill and you want your pet to receive timely attention while your at work or away or just because the weather prevents outdoor exercise. This is the first time anyone in my family used a facility like this. I was uncertain about how my doxie would fare with all those dogs, big and small. The staff conducts what they call an "interview" which merely means they place your dog with the others and observe the situation for dogs that might be better having more limited interaction. My doxie loves this place. She was like a child who didn't want to come home from camp. Seriously, she really has a great time and I believe the pet is better for it. It really let's you relax when you're on vacation because you can trust that your dog is in good hands. More importantly, the prices are reasonable. read more

Love this place! Had to travel out of the country for my wedding/honeymoon and was terrified about leaving my dog anywhere. After countless searching and walk thru's River Pet was the only one that made sense, they really care about your pets and make sure you are at ease. Super friendly staff. I took my dog there for physical therapy because of a surgery he had. They always took their time with him. You could tell they actually care about the animals. They try and make sure all the pets are friendly with each other. The only down fall is that it's a little expensive but it's worth it. read more
