I am SUPER excited to announce, our beautiful little girl was delivered a couple weeks ago, NOT by Dr. Thoppil. That being said... Now I feel it's in the best interest to inform the public about Dr. Thoppil's practice. First impression right off the bat, all John Thoppil cares about is his image. Look at his website for stats, stats, stats all about how "Good" you are! At the end of the day, it's quite simple really, Dr Thoppil really only cares about himself, has basically no heart, and likes to belittle you as much as he can. My other half due to her age is ranked as high risk, that being said it's important to stay as healthy as possible through the pregnancy. First round of checkups with Dr Thoppil results come back showing she has a UTI, well that's great... Not what you want to hear. Funny thing was, she was completely asymptomatic not showing any signs of having a UTI. We went with his advice, took all the antibiotic which really made her sick as a dog and couldn't keep food down. Our next checkup went decent, again mentioned she has zero signs of a UTI and that she was sick as a dog, might not want to take those antibiotics again. Now that visit was on a Friday, and Dr Thoppil scheduled us for the following week on Monday for the sonogram to check the baby. Funny thing, we get a call from the pharmacist letting us know Sunday afternoon, "Just wanted to let you know your prescription is ready to be picked up !" Not one call, text, smoke signal, nothing to let us know HEY your results came back and blah blah blah...from the doctor! I am sorry but, if you received a call from a pharmacist for a totally different drug to take and NOT have a clue WHY, wouldn't you worry, I know I would! Monday rolls around, and we head in for the sonogram as scheduled, of course the lady at the front desk was acting rude being we called Sunday and had to leave a VM with our concerns to what's happening and why are we receiving a call about a prescription!? As we sit down and check in with the nurse we begin to question still, what is going on. Nurses first response, "Oh I am sorry I don't work weekends or anything outside of Mon-Fri 8-5, not my problem outside of business hours... Sorry can't help you." Leaving the room and mentioning I'll get Dr. Thoppil for you, he can explain on full detail. Of course, much to my surprise Dr. Thoppil comes in the room all hot and upset banging the door open, starting the conversation with "Hey why am I hearing from my staff you are upset." Goes into defense mode "You know I didn't have to do anything over the weekend, not many doctors ever look at patients results over the weekend... You have no right to be upset at us... We go above and beyond to take care of our patients." As these words are being spoken of course it's all in my sweet partners face as she is just sitting there taking this VERBAL ABUSE! Truth be told, he was basically spitting in her face to prove this point out how his image is pure and he NEVER makes mistakes!! His complete mode of attack was to let us know he is perfect, works outside of "Normal Dr. Business hours" and he didn't have to do that! Instead we should be thanking him, he didn't expect the pharmacist to call, and blamed them for calling us to inform us the prescription was ready??? Really?? Again never apologized once, but instead blames others, and talks down to us in a way to hype his little ego to show how there's no POSSIBLE way he did anything wrong of course not... It's all the patients fault and feelings! Keep in mind, my sweet partner is classified high risk and worries about having a health baby, and pregnancy... Nothing to worry about Right!? It's hard to explain how tense it truly was, and how abusive he speaks to woman... It's a real shock to me how he still has a license to be an OBGYN! Not only did Dr. Thoppil act with such disrespect, but honestly so did his staff. The lady at the front desk wouldn't explain why, but informed us we have to pay $500 up front. Of course I paid the $500 up front and when we left them immediately that Monday we called the insurance to find out why there was a charge outside of what was required. It was an optional deposit to cover the cost for the delivery, funny how it literally took FIVE phone calls from our insurance company to get the funds back. Not only was it multiple phone calls, but yes of course they dragged their feet and it took 45-60 days to receive a check back from Dr. Thoppil's scam practice as I would call it... I'll give you the respect and spare the details of who and where. But it definitely was mentioned from others in the medical field, that your demeanor is questionable... Don't be alarmed, he'll reply to this and try and defend his practice AGAIN. Please don't refer to me by my first name, you haven't earned that right to... You lost that the moment you basically kicked the door down, verbally abusing my pregnant wife!! read more

I have been seeing Dr. Thoppil for about 4-5 years. He was always been wonderful & I loved having him as my DR. However, I will be going else where for now on because of his office staff & new policies. Even through I have been seeing him for years I needed to provide a credit card. I don't use credit cards so then I was told I needed to give a check or cash for amount of my services and they would refund me. I tried to explain to these young immature girls that my yearly well check was covered at 100%. She said that didn't matter. I needed to pay upfront. The two girls were acting like children. They were laughing and making fun of me for being upset. I wish I had gotten their names. read more

I have only been to this clinic twice but every visit thus far has been great! Dr. Thoppil is professional, has great bedside manner, communicates very well, and is compassionate and understanding. I know I am in god hands! Furthermore, the staff are cordial and respond to my requests in a timely manner, and the lab tech was so kind to draw my blood with a butterfly needle as I'm not a fan of blood draws (who is?!). I am currently 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I chose Dr. Thoppil and River Place Obgyn entirely off of the reviews I read about him and the practice before getting pregnant. I am SO glad that we decided on River Place! Dr. Thoppil is extremely professional but also very personable. He never makes me feel like my questions are dumb, he answers every question thoroughly and thoughtfully. The entire staff is friendly and helpful and every appointment is SO timely. I cannot stress how amazing it's been to get in right at my appt. time or even earlier and I never have to wait long to see the Doctor. The online portal is so easy to use to ask questions, review information and schedule/reschedule appointments. My husband and I are very excited to continue our prenatal care with Dr. Thoppil. We have been so happy thus far and can't wait until our baby boy is here! read more

I cannot give this office more than one star because of their questionable billing practices and their complete disrespect for patients. If you try calling or messaging them, you will never get straight answers about any procedures and their costs, not to mention the fact that they recommend procedures which are typically not necessary. If you are late one minute (literally), you will be turned around, but they have no problem making you wait for over an hour. This is completely unacceptable. Personable and welcoming are benchmarks of this doctor's office. With warm lighting, a unique pink chair, and travel themed rooms this isn't your standard cold, callous, white hall experience. After going through five OB's in the past seven years, I was referred by a friend to Dr. Thoppil. My expectations were low, as they often are with doctor's visits, but I was completely blown away. The staff at Riverplace will truly get to know you and Dr. Thoppil actually takes the time to listen to you when you talk. I started visiting this office in January 2015 with my first pregnancy and plan on continuing to visit Dr. Thoppil and his staff until one of us either moves or kicks the bucket. Let me start by saying if there was a way to give more than 5 stars I would. Dr Thoppil is the most caring, empathetic amazing Doctor I've ever met. He delivered my third baby by c-section in May 2016 after meeting me just a week before. I had traveled to Texas to be with my father who has cancer and couldn't find a doctor. Dr Thoppil moved mountains for me to have my baby in May while I had my family visiting and was so caring and sensitive to my situation. He is also incredibly knowledgable and spent over an hour counseling and coaching me about this baby and the baby I wanted to get pregnant with this summer. The procedure went great and my scar looks amazing (especially for it being my third c section) and Dr Thoppil does a great job helping me manage my care/pain post op. Despite being a new patient I was still treated extremely well. He and his staff checked up on me and were very caring. I can't recommend him more! read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Thoppil's since December 2013. I came to him with my very first pregnancy. I was nervous, excited, scared and thrilled when I found out. He guided me though the entire thing. Answered any and all questions I had. We went through the entire pregnancy and delivery with him...I even had a little complication during postpartum and was fixed up quick! I have since been going for my annuals and random checkups. I will say, I completely miss seeing this staff on a regular basis. Ariel is our receptionist! I know what its like being a receptionist. You're the first and last person the customer sees. Its one of the most important positions in any company. The front desk tends to get the backlash of any unhappy people...but I want to tell you girl, YOU ROCK! Ariel is such a sweetheart. She is absolutely perfect for the front desk. Every time I come in, I get greeted with a big warm smile and excitement to see me. She knows my name so she doesn't have a reason to ask. Next up, my girl Tiffany. YOU ARE A STAR! I absolutely LOVE when she greets me with her own nickname for me (Miss Jenn). Nobody calls me that except you. I am always so excited to see her and I'm so happy she's still here. For other patients...she loves it when you fill out your online paperwork before coming in. Saves her time and she is able to have a bit of a conversation with you. She always asks how things have been going, gets the ins and outs of your life. You can tell that she really cares about you and the work she is doing. I definitely feel like part of the family. Last, but not least, Dr. Thoppil. Words cannot express how much I appreciate you (but I'll try). In the 3 years I have been a patient, you have been nothing but caring and patient with me. I've had a lot of ups and downs and you are always there to pick me right back up. You care about the work you do and you care about the people you work with (staff and patients). Please, please do not waste your time or health with this practice. I found Riverplace OBGYN through my insurance network and although it was a 30 min drive my home (should have checked google maps) I trekked out there for a Well Women's visit with Madeleine Katz. Nothing notable, everything seemed pretty routine until we were on the way home. RP called back to let me know additional blood needed to be drawn because they forgot it the first time. We hauled it back there to spare ourselves another day of traffic and missed work. A week or so later I get another call from Pamela at RP saying I need to come in to hear the results of my blood tests. Originally I was told they'd be loaded to their patient portal and I wasn't anxious to make another trek, so I asked if it was really necessary. Apparently yes, I had blood work come outside of normal ranges and a provider wouldn't discuss the details of that over the phone. So we take another day off, head back to River Place in a panic thinking something is seriously wrong. Turns out, Madeline didn't think anything was cause for concern and I don't for one second think she asked to see me. It was the office manager who called me back in and she left out some important details. Namely that this would be considered a brand new doctors visit subject to deductibles, co pays and the like. So when a 92$ charge popped up on my bank statement, I truly had no idea why. I was never sent a bill, notice, email, smoke signal, nada. And nobody let me know that showing up to hear my test results WAS OPTIONAL AND PROBABLY UNNECESSARY and most likely a scam to defraud my insurance company. I've spent hours in traffic, hours on the phone, and 92$ on smoke and mirrors people. If you arrive here in good health, the incompetence is sure to send you out sick. Spare yourself, and work with a practice that has transparent AND COMPETENT billing and scheduling practices. read more

Dr. Thoppil delivered my first (& only so far) baby and I can honestly say that he is amazing! I've always had female doctors but when I got pregnant I noticed that most didn't have the best reviews so I continued to look for an OBGYN and found Dr. Thoppil. He has always made me feel comfortable and made sure to answer all 100 questions I had at every visit. My labor didn't go as I had planned but Dr. Thoppil confidently gave me my options and successfully delivered a healthy baby (with a healthy mom). I have full trust and faith in Dr. Thoppils work and I'm so thankful to have had him as my doctor. Another plus - The nurses are all awesome and make you feel like family. I've also had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Sheppard a couple of times and she, too, is so sweet and thorough. They are always thorough, and go above and beyond to make sure you feel well-informed if you have concerns and never make you feel silly for asking things that YOU might think are silly. Dr. Thoppil performed an emergency c-section on when my baby turned breach at the last minute and was wonderful about the situation. He worked quickly towards a safe delivery for me and baby, and kept a cool head despite the surprise change of plans. After having horrendous prenatal care, L&D care, and initial postpartum care at a completely different clinic, I knew I needed a good physician. Not only did I find that in Dr. Thoppil, he far exceeded my expectations. He listened--truly listened--and addressed my concerns like he was talking to an equal. He has taken amazing care of me throughout this scary part of my women's healthcare journey. His office staff has been nothing but wonderful to me, and everyone there has gone above and beyond to provide me the best care possible. I trust Dr. Thoppil more than any OBGYN I've ever had, and hope he doesn't retire until I no longer need his services. I had a minor hiccup in some post-op care, and he just happened to be out of town (my luck, go figure), and had to be in touch with his on call physician, and let's just say, I will NEVER do that again. I know ascetics are not a big deal to all women but when I walked into the Rio De Janeiro room and there was decor and a black chandelier I knew this place had to be good. A doctor with that much attention to detail must know what he is doing. I came to Dr. Thoppil after being very frustrated and treated very badly at another OB/GYN's office. He put all of my worries to rest and answered all of my questions thoroughly. He spent quite a bit of time with me to make sure I understood all of the information he shared. Let's put it this way.... I drive an hour, sometimes more, to see Dr. T. He's the best doctor I've visited. Him and his staff are caring and professional and I've never encountered a rude person on his staff. I moved to Austin last Summer. Up until the point I started seeing Dr. Thoppil, every other OB/GYN I had been to herded me through the doors, seemed very rushed, didn't explain or answer my questions with clarity, made me feel like I was wasting to much of their time, and honestly you could tell they just honestly did not care because I was one among many women they saw. I will not go to anyone else besides Dr. Thoppil now! Dr. Thoppil and his nurse/right hand woman, Tiffany, are so patient, kind, funny, and down to earth. I have never felt so comfortable with an OB/GYN. They actually ask you questions getting to know you. Every time I go in they both remember what I do, who I am, and actually personal stuff about my life. It is so comforting and makes me feel like they care. When it comes time for me to have babies of my own I wouldn't trust anyone else but those two. Also, I read some reviews about unfriendly office staff...the receptionist is so sweet. If she was ever even a little unkind to someone(which I can just not imagine) I feel that maybe that specific patient was hard to handle and probably extremely unkind! I definitely recommend Dr. Thoppil's office to all of my friends. I don't see how he and Stephanie could not be a perfect fit for every woman! They are the best! Update: Almost three years later from the above review and I just had my first baby on 10/19/17 delivered by Dr.Thoppil. Still the best office staff and Dr. around! Refocused on my health after my Dad's stroke in December, I made a doctors appointment. Dr. John Thoppil lead with a comprehensive wellness assessment comprised of exams and lab work. Results identified one element of concern putting at risk my future health. Dr. John Thoppil addressed the concern with clarity outlining options to resolve the risk. I was referred to Dr. Thoppil through my Primary Care doctor, and I could not be happier with that decision. As a first time mom I had every question in the book, but they were thoroughly answered by him and his wonderful staff. They got to know me on a personal level, and they took very good care of our baby and I. I've heard of a lot of other doctors rushing the delivery, but although Dr. Thoppil had places to be on a Friday night he stayed with me until my little guy was born. Beyond thankful I found Dr. Thoppil, I trust him literally with my life! I unfortunately had a history of reoccurring miscarriages, I had visited different practitioners. Heartbreaking experiences, they didn't seem to actually treat me like a person, I was a number, they never listened to my symptoms or problems by the time they did it was too late. When I came to Dr. Ts office (pregnancy #5) I was in tears, more than anything I wanted my baby to be ok. Dr. T right away took me in at 4 weeks as soon as I explained my history when I requested an appt. He followed my pregnancy closely. I actually felt like someone was actually doing their job! He always told me to keep my faith that he needed me to be positive. I left the first office visit thinking everything would be fine for once. The care during my pregnancy was the best. My fiancé was really happy. Tiffany is the sweetest as well. I encountered problems during my pregnancy, I loved how he handled every situation. His office was 1 hour away, which the care tremendously outweighed the drive. Today I have a happy healthy baby boy. I honestly thank god so much I found Dr. T. I had never been to an OBGYN! A friend requested river place OB/GYN. Dr. Thoppil was available ASAP so I booked an appointment. I felt so awkward at first because he was a guy. The staff made me feel so comfortable, especially Tiffany who actually took the time to get to know me before the doctor came in. He came in solved my problem immediately. He is beyond educated and knows exactly what to do I went back 1 week later to get an IUD. Hearing horror stories I was mortified. He talked me through the whole thing and 2 hours later I was in no pain at all. He not only did it perfectly but my after care has been a piece of cake. I know understand why he is voted the best in Austin. I will forever go to him now!!! Also if you have any questions, he responds on the portal within a day. Tiffany helped me after the procedure and really made me feel so at ease. They're not there to only just solve your issues but you can tell they truly do care about you as an individual. I was referred to Dr. Thoppil at River Place Ob/Gyn for a biopsy. I called to make an appointment and spoke with the receptionist to schedule an appointment. When I told her that I was on Medicare she said they weren't taking any new patients this month. This is only June 5. She was rude and didn't even offer to check with the doctor for another referral. It's not like I was wanting a routine exam. I had heard good reviews of Dr. Thoppil but I will never call this office again. read more
