For very inexperienced tubers, we had a great time! The website says to get there an hour before your tubing reservation, but as long as everyone's signed the waivers in advance, you only really need to be there about 30 minutes beforehand to get a seat for the safety video. It is mandatory and starts about 20 minutes before your reservation time (ours was 3:15). Bathroom lines are LONG. I would recommend wearing a bathing suit with shorts to the video, because you'll directly board the bus from there (after getting your life jacket). In fact, I was impressed with how quick the boarding process was. They drop flat water and white water tubers off in the same area, and if you're white water tubing be prepared to swim across to the other side of the river to get to the Potomac. The river was scenic, however we kept getting stuck on rocks and at one point had to climb over a very large rock formation to get to the other side. At pick up, we were impressed with how quickly buses came and went (we narrowly missed the first one, but got picked up 5 minutes later). Btw, we did it with the cooler. Would do it again! read more

We went 'flat water tubing' this weekend with River Riders and had a great time. Everything was ready when we arrived, there was plenty of staff to help guide you to the right place to be (there are a lot of options of things to do here) and everyone had a smile on their face and were happy to help. We watched a quick video to orient everyone on what to expect then headed down to the river. Our group contained 12 people from 3 families with kids ranging from 8-17 years old plus 6 adults. When we arrived at the take out point there was a bus ready to take us back up to the entry area for a second trip down the river. After the second trip we arrived at the take out area and got on a different bus to head back to the HQ to change and head home. Great day out on the water and fun for all! read more

Great place for zip-lining! We spent 3 hours up in the trees, zip-lining from platform to platform, under the canopy of leaves. The rivers has risen so much that we were actually flying on top of the Potomac! Great fun for our whole team from work. Noah and Hailey were great guides, funny, knowledgeable and most importantly: always keeping us safe. Even our most worried team members made it all the way through. River riders is a great adventure for the whole family. The call water tubing if nice and relaxing, but I found the white water tubing to be more fun. I have gone back white water tubing several times and can't complain. My pro tips are to bring a dry bag, plenty of water, sunscreen and a snack. Well well well...I was really excited to go kayaking but I wasn't very excited about the experience that is for sure. They tell you to arrive 1 hour before the shuttle brings you to the loading area...why an hour you ask??? Because they are so super disorganized!!! We filled out our waivers prior to arriving but had to fill them out again on the computer when we arrived and then we had to go check in where they had me fill out a form...again!!! You read that right, I filled out the same form three times!!! The friends I was with all heard separate things from people but overall it was just insane! Oh and they asked me for my drivers license number, date of birth, and address...I mean why do they need all that information???? So these were all the annoyances before we even got to the final destination. Then when we got to the spot with the kayaks and SUPs, we were told we had two hours from our drop off time and told to watch the time BUT no one was keeping track and when we came back two hours later, there was no bus to take us back!!! I mean we could have stayed all day...we also could have fallen in the water and no one would have known. They counted us when we got on the bus to the loading area but why? No one was checking on us at any other point. It was sheer chaos! The highlight though was one of their employees, Malachi, he was truly amazing. Super friendly, informative, and had a great sense of humor and he helped us the entire time! Without him, this experience would have been a bust, he needs a raise stat!!! He did mention that today (August 5,2017) was one of the busiest days on the books but their lack of attention to detail could be the difference between life and death for people...and I don't write hat hyperbolically. We watched a girl's tube go all the way toward the dam and she got stuck!!! No joke! I hope they get their systems and kinks worked out because it really needs some streamlining and consistency! read more

We tent camped for one night here. The grounds were decent, although close to other peoples campsites. Plenty of bathrooms that weren't too far away. The thing that ruined the experience for us though was the train. There is a train right next to the grounds that runs past (what feels like) every 20 minutes. I didn't hear one from about 1am-4am thankfully. It was so loud it's like sleeping next to the NYC subway. We couldn't sleep and our dog was so freaked out he puked. It's a bummer because we would like to come back, but because of the train we will not. No one informed us of the train before we came. Wouldn't recommend this site if you are noise sensitive or want to get good sleep. read more

My friends and I have been coming here for years in groups of 6 to 12 people and our trips have all gone without any issues. It's a great way to spend a lazy day away from the city. We've enjoyed ourselves for about 5-6 years. I can never remember. We enjoy flat water tubing. Kudos for the newly built parking lot but truthfully parking on the grass (which is now additional parking) was just fine. Plan on a day to rough it if you visit - no frills adventure but trust me... with the right people in your circle River Riders is tons of fun. The checkin process is so smooth now, especially if you take care of your waiver online. Afterwards you watch your safety video, grab your vest, board a bus and you're on your way. We spend about 4 to 5 hours on premises whenever we go... from check in to two trips down the river to check out. Always a great time. I'll definitely return and I most definitely have to check out the superman zip line when I return. read more

At first, everything was great... good safety video. Tubes were nice. The river was gorgeous and would definitely do it again. But what you are really paying for is the bus... We got to the bus to take the 4 minute drive back. There were 2 buses waiting at the pick up. We waited for over 40 minutes to get back to the parking lot. THAT IS NOT OK. I will never go back to this company. Also: they advertise a free drink at white horse tavern EVERYWHERE! Oh the free drink is with the purchase of an entree. I'm sorry?! I wish I could rate a little higher as it was fun in the beginning. I chose to do white water tubing and flat water tubing , but the WW took so long and we were so tired that there was no way we were starting all over, so that was a waste of money. Overall, overpriced for what you get (a tube and a bus ride), extremely poor prep that doesn't tell you what you actually need to know, like - you will need a paddle!!! , and no free water for bottles. There weren't a ton of rapids, but that can't be helped as it's obviously nature dependent. The problem was that they didn't warn us how much flat water we would be going through, and that we could easily get 'stuck' or need to paddle to keep moving. And tubers don't get paddles unless you choose the 'boat' version, which I would have if I'd have had any warning that I would be exhausting myself paddling with my arms. It was almost impossible to stay with your person or group without tethering. and, of course, they warn you that tethering is dangerous and not permitted, nor is alcohol, which is a joke since they sell it in their shop. Plenty of folks were having a blast but I suspect that is because they were tethered and drunk so just chilling in the river with friends!! read more

Came with a family of four to do the lazy river tubing portion of the river. If possible sign your waivers online and make sure all information is correct to save time in line when you arrive. The staff members were very helpful and made check-in very easy. There is a short safety video to watch before getting on the bus that takes you to the drop-off point to get started. On the way the driver stopped for a brief second to familiarize everyone with the endpoint which was clearly marked and easy to locate. It took about an hour to complete one trip. At no point did I feel unsafe and from what I could tell the deepest portions of the river where only about chest high. read more

This was a cool idea for our anniversary. The process was quite easy to check in and listen to video instructions. The bus was also on time and took us to destination safely. We had a few encounters at the beginning and they showed up 5 minutes later with a solution to tie our floats together. Thw day proceeded fairly well until we tipped over on the last rapid and was exhausted to paddle to the other side, so we got stuck on a rock for a littlw while. Thank God for a call to the office and they sent TRISTON to the rescue right close to the sandy beach. He was great and really assisted us over to the edge by walking over through the rocks and had us sit on his kayak. We couldn't make it without him. read more

This campground was very disappointing, after being so excited to hike out to our site and camp with the kids along the water. There was essentially no water view or access from our site. Everything is so close that instead of listening to nature you are listening to your neighbors conversations. The amount of traffic in and out of the boat ramp from the adventure tubing tours made it nearly impossible for the kids to enjoy the water until late evening but by then the remaining staff is cursing up a storm as they clean up the tubes from the day. There were no quiet hours with neighbors playing music and yelling outside until 12:45 am. Between the noise from other sites, constant tubing trip traffic, no view of the river, closeness to other sites, it was not nearly the camping experience we were hoping for. read more

We really enjoyed the white water tubing adventure! The staff were helpful and friendly. They genuinely cared about our safety, asking several times if we were sure we were good swimmers and sure we wanted to go through with it (or maybe they were just trying to build the excitement). The equipment worked well, and the experience was fun. We had to wait maybe 20 minutes at the end for the bus to take us back, but we weren't in a hurry. A fun spot to go flat water tubing. This is my 3rd year venturing out to Harper's Ferry and River Riders. Efficient online registration process, friendly service when you arrive. Organized. And just all around fun. RR transports you by bus to the river entry point and gives perfect directions on where to exit. You can't miss it. My suggestion is to rent the deluxe tube and buy your floating cooler. Bring some food and drinks, meet new and old friends along the river, wrap your cell phones in plastic bags to prevent water damage. And just have a grand ol' time. read more

It had been about 5 years since we had run down the river with River Riders in Harpers Ferry on the Shenandoah side flat water tubing and I'm not happy with the changes that they have made to the supposed 2 to 3 hour float trip. The river was not running that fast and we took breaks along the coastline and it still was no more than an hour long. It used to run down under the train trestle and you would get out on the right hand side before the green bridge but that is no more. It's really a total waste of time and money! They have their own put in and take out on the left side nowhere close to Harpers Ferry train trestle. The fun part about doing tubing in this area is to float past the town. I can't speak about there Potomac Whitewater tubing but it apparently goes all the way down past the town. There is nothing about this change on their website and most other quality tubing companies at least have a rough map of where you go in and come out. I definitely do not recommend the flat water tubing trip anymore read more

!!! Don't stay in cabin C2 !!! Actually, the whole campground was terrible and my family (wife and two young kids) left after one night. Worst "campground" I've been to "More interested in glamping? Stay in one of our campground cabins." - RR website "Relax on the porch and enjoy the serene Potomac river with your family or friends" - RR website * The advertised view of the river was obstructed by a wall and some weird electronics pole that were curiously missing in the website photo * The sites are almost on top of one another, the table for the next door RV site was against the wall of our cabin * There was a random extension cord running along the ground across the "path" to the river through the site (trip hazard) * You can't get to the river without stepping over the cord and weaving your way through cables for the zip line * Cars honk repeatedly, all hours of the day and night as they go through the adjacent tunnel. Even if you can sleep, it is impossible to relax during the day with the incessant noise * There is a train that runs right next to the campground at all hours * The oddly short picnic table sits on top of the access door to some kind of tank ( water? septic?). The caps to the vent stacks kept getting knocked off. * Best of all, our first night, water started to run out of the base of the toilet all over the bathroom floor * Water or sewage (it stunk) was bubbling up out of the ground through some plumbing under the cabin. I spoke with the staff and asked them to check on it and get back to me about what the mystery water was, if the water was safe to drink, and when it was fixed. We never heard back from them * When we went to check out early after the first day the staff didn't even ask why ( I'm sure we are not the first to cancel our trip early because the lodging was so bad ). When we then asked for a refund of our second nights stay the "manager" was dismissive of our complaints. We paid the ridiculous price of almost $500 for two nights at this property * Learn from our mistake, don't stay here! read more

Thanks to internet deals, I get to enjoy this all summer long with the Adventure Park Season Pass. Move over, Jones. The Adventure Park consists of 5 aerial adventures that range from novice to expert. Based on your comfort level, you can choose your own adventure(s), within your allotted time frame, and then you can take to the sky. Whatever adventure you choose, a good time can be had by all. Some courses have more zip lines, some require endurance while others require a little more strength. The staff are extremely conscientious and warm. They help you get suited up, they provide great advice along your rope climbing journey and they just want you to stay safe and have fun. The main lodge can be a fiasco. Regardless of your reservation time, you should arrive early, print out anything you can from home and have it filled out and ready to go. River Riders runs multiple activities and is a busy place. Heed my advice: be prepared, arrive early. FYI: Weekdays are not as hectic. My few gripes are insignificant and do not affect the actual adventure. - The season pass printer has been malfunctioning since spring. Check-in is faster once you have the pass- been trying since April. -You have to watch the safety demonstration 5x before you can take the safety test. (It feels longer every time I watch it) The test will clear you for the rest of the season. At least they want you to be safe. Yep, perfect storm edition . And I'm afraid that the merky, scummy, beautiful and "roaring" Shenandoah /Potomac River corssing will only become more beer and urine filled after this review.. Alas... It must be done. People must know that the fear monger you durring will not stop Bros from broing out and getting crunk . You will fill out waivers and be threatened to not drunk....while being sold beer coolers and snuggle up to Mellenial cohorts, top less and taught on the bus to the drop off. Spring for the cheapest tube, it still comes with a cup holder and bum holes for bottom cooling . The drive over id fun, your mini color full of ice, canned beer and water, snack packs are on fleck and you are about to turn-up !!! 15 of your friends have lathered up with SPF30, but your tube will still get caught on rocks and green shrubs, fed by detritus and pee. You'll push and wiggle, scream and celebrate, drink eat and be merry, maybe even dock on an island and have a dance party... the river will take it's cut (ie your glasses and maybe hat), but smiles are everywhere. We went on the hottest day EVER!!!! Lost a friend!!! Got eaten buy bugs..... And will be back next year!! read more

I felt comfortable coming to river riders as a repeat customer of over 5 years and have enjoyed every year, but was absolutely horrified to see that the precautions due to Covid were very very slim this year. Although signs say that customers are required to wear masks, 9 out of 10 customers were not wearing them, and the company did not enforce them. The line to check in was ridiculous, with over 20 people in line and everyone inside the office. I like the idea of signing the waivers ahead of time, but if we still have to go inside the office with limited air flow with everyone else then it's pointless. There needs to be a better system. The bus process also needs to change ASAP. The bus was almost 100% full with at least one person at every seat. A suggestion to at least have people sit at every other seat to limit the number of people on that bus. The bus is clearly not sanitized before and after each use. Ridiculous and a super uncomfortable experience. It's a shame. Every year I used to visit at least twice - for tubing and adventure park. That will not be happening this year, due to the limited precautions the company is taking and unfortunately we will be using another company. Despite this experience, I'd like to thank Ryan and Charlie on the whitewater; they were super helpful when one of our tubes completely deflated during our trip and they coordinated to get another one right away. read more

We did the flat water tubing with the kids. Experience was excellent with all the friendly service you needed and none of the overbearing kind you can do without. They took care of the important things like life vests and shuttles and left the rest up to us. They had guidelines for shoes for instance, but anything we wanted to wear was fine. Despite a long line outside and in, they moved us through pretty fast. Some tips for you - if you pre-pay online, your arrival is greatly expedited. If you didn't, you can still enter your waivers from your cell phone which can also speed things along. We did the family float, I rented tubes for the kids and I brought my own floatable which was nice. Since I had my own life vest also it was only $15 for the shuttle for me, kids used their tubes but we also got a discount off of theirs because they have their own Coast Guard approved life jackets as well. We did the float, which is not very long, but still takes about an hour. At the end there is a little creek feeding the main river that the kids played in while waiting for the bus. They had a blast. The shuttle will run you back up to the start and you can do it again. You don't have to go all the way back to the outfitters, they just run you the 5 minutes up the road. You can get here early and do it all day if you like (although I'd grab one of the longer float option if you do that). That is the only negative. I'd say for kids the flat water float is is perfect. If you are going to float down with a cooler and your own beverages, just when you get dialed in you will notice the exit ramp approaching and you have to haul your stuff out. They have white water floats that run a half day or full day. Anyway, I'd definitely come back for this float again or any of their other services. Seems like a nice operation. They also have many of the supplies you may have forgotten at their store (shoes, sunscreen, drinks, ice cream, snacks, etc.) Also, I called twice with questions. Both times I was connected with someone right away who was friendly and answered my questions. The website is also very helpful. read more

The river experience was lots of fun and the tubes were comfortable, but I was disappointed with their lack of precautionary measures for COVID. Contrary to what's on their website, they do not enforce mask-wearing or social distancing and they are running busses at full capacity. We went early in the morning Sunday to avoid the big crowds. I had expected them to have every other row in the bus closed off so that social distancing could be better enforced - not the case. The buses were packed and people were allowed to get on coughing and not wearing masks. I thought since this was an outdoor activity on a big river it would be safe - but if I had to do it over again I wouldn't because the bus ride there and back was not worth the risk. read more

I got the canopy zip line tour as a mother's day gift. Our trip was at 1pm. We were told to be waiting on the benches 15 min early (we completed our waivers online prior to this). Then were giving our equipment, watched a short video, met our guides (Jason, Shelby and Angela) bussed out to the start point. The tour is great, starts out easy and progresses to lines of various lengths and heights. I am very scared of heights and they were cool with me taking my time before each 'launch'. Several others were height adverse as well and all the guides were helpful and supportive (dare I say fantastic?!) Tips: - If you come the weekend of 8MAY they may be having a road race. By 1245 the crowd had dissapated. Plan accordingly. - in October they do night canopy tours in costume :) - guide get tips. There is an ATM at the little lodge you can go to prior to 'tour' start - canopy tour doesn't include the 'superman.' it's about $20 as an add on. read more

River Riders was an adventure from start to finish, from the moment that we stepped onto the property. Their website is laid out really well and gives you a great impression of the place--until you get inside (or rather, to the never-ending line outside) and realize that it was a trap. A group of five friends and I came for the Potomac Play Pass, which lets you canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddlebord. We had made reservations in advance and we're looking for the area to pay. With virtually no signage and several labyrinthine lines that ran into each other like a traffic circle gone wrong, it took over half an hour simply to get inside to the waiting area. The staff, while not unfriendly, seemed to be unclear on which line was for which groups, among other things. Once we got inside, we thought we were home free. Nope! It was packed with people from wall to wall, which is understandable at the peak of summer. However, here again there was a throng of people where legitimately no one knew where to go. There was (we eventually learned) a line for purchasing water gear, one for getting a locker (which you can only access once without needing to buy a new token, so don't accidentally close it while your friend is in the restroom or anything), and about 12 for paying and ultimately being able to go rafting. We got a ticket number and entered into the roulette where they call your group's number as you strain to hear over the crowd of people. When we were up, we paid. By this time, despite the fact that we had arrived with ample time in advance of our 10am appointment, it was already past ten but they told us to head upstairs for the required safety video. Adventure #3: The Video. We get upstairs, where a random non-staff lady is barbecuing and we were expecting to see a group of other people ready to go on the water. Alas, no one was there but the six of us. After waiting over 15 minutes without sight of a staff person, I ventured back downstairs to find someone. After fighting the line again, I found the lady who had been calling out group numbers. She assured me that someone would be up shortly, in about five minutes. So I return upstairs and we wait for another 10+ minutes. A young lady does come upstairs and we're like, "Yay, finally!" and then she says she wasn't here for us. I asked her to send someone up--you have to do the safety video before being taken on the water. No one ever comes, I go downstairs again, and by the time we watch the safety video (which is this hilarious slapstick humor sort of thing), it has been nearly an HOUR that we have waited, not to mention the time in line downstairs. We are eventually taken to the back, where we get our PFDs and load onto the bus to head to the river. When we get to the drop off point, we get our kayaks (after finding a few that weren't water logged) and have a great time. Since the Play Pass allows you to do several activities, we took a shot at stand-up paddle boarding. SUP is kind of hard but good fun once you get your balance! We really had a great time once we were out there. In short, River Riders is interesting because while the activities themselves are awesome, you may spend half as much time waiting in lines as you do having fun. I've been to a number of similar establishments in other states, and this is by far the least organized. That said, once you get past the hot mess of lines and lack of communication, you're good to go! read more

River Riders provided a fun outdoor activity day. Some friends and I bought a LivingSocial deal and decided to do a day of rafting and biking. As if being in West Virginia isn't recreational enough, River Riders provided a nice outdoor experience. The rafting trip was fun. You get bussed to the entry spot in the river. The rapids are anywhere from class 1 to 3. We had someone fall out of the raft (and plenty of people fall inside the raft) but the water is shallow and the instructors knew what they were doing, albeit some better than others. After a while of paddling and getting thrown around on waves, my butt and arm hurt, but it was well worth the adrenaline! I wouldn't exactly recommend this for children although plenty of parents brought their young'uns. After being bussed back from the water, my group and I picked out our bikes and prepared for a fun ride. The van took us to a spot about a mile from Harper's Ferry where we biked on a coarse gravel trail. It was VERY bumpy. I would not recommend the biking for anyone elderly or with a bad back etc. Biking around Harper's Ferry was nice. You can stop for food or ice cream and look out at the falls. Overall it was a nice way to spend an entire day outside enjoying the summer. The deals make it more reasonable as well. I would skip the bike riding portion next time though. In addition the rafting portion was a little long but still enjoyable. read more
