I was working in the area and came across this place. Nothing fancy but who cares. I thought I would grab a bbq sandwich and hit the road. I ordered a beef brisket sandwich ($11.xx) and an order of Mac and cheese, and a bottle of Coke. Cost over $20 and was less than filling. At least the bun they provided was big enough to at least get me to the next town. 3 small pieces of meat and Mac and cheese that had zero flavor. I gave them 2 stars because of the chance I just ordered wrong and they actually have good food and I just missed it but the price for what I received was definitely not worth it. read more

If I can give this restaurant, zero stars for the food I would. When we arrived at the facility, it was nice and clean. We ordered ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and baked beans. When we received our food and the ribs and brisket were good. The pulled pork was dry and tough and needed bbq sauce (which was nasty as well) and water. I'm not sure who thought it was a good idea to put pulled pork and baked beans, but that was not a great choice. That had to be the most disgusting baked beans I have ever tasted. No sweetness to the beans at all! They didn't have a big side selection or desserts! Only chocolate balls that's been the fridge for who knows how long. In my opinion, River Road BBQ has the best bbq in Louisville - hands down! I've driven past here so many times on my way to the dog park or Riverfront park, and you can always smell the smokers going. I'm not sure how I went so long without trying it! Both the chopped chicken and pulled pork are amazing, and their bbq sauce is great too! Though, let it be known, this smoked meat doesn't even need bbq sauce - it's just that good. Very good beef brisket and chorizo. The chorizo was a tad on the mild side for heat level compared to a lot of others, but it was perfect for sandwich. The mustard based barbecue sauce was the perfect sauce for it, with the right balance of mustard tang and sweet. read more

Engelbrecht Date Night and we were craving some BBQ. Found this spot on Yelp a few weeks ago and had the perfect opportunity to go. We ordered the family pack, split 50/50 brisket and pork, with potato salad and cole slaw. Came with 4 buns and bbq sauce as well. Also ordered 2 drinks. The food came out crazy quick, the brisket was delicious, tender and basically fell apart on your fork. The pork was also pretty good! I will warn you the the coleslaw and potato salad are both delicious but may not be what you're used to, no mustard in the potato salad and the coleslaw isn't creamy. Overall a good spot to stop for a low key date night. We took home enough to have another meal! (And look forward to eating it again ) read more

I was on my way back from hitting absolute bombs at the driving range when I noticed River Road BBQ. I said to myself, "Hey this place looks cool, maybe I should check it out." I order a small BBQ pulled pork sandwich (almost $9). Chips were $1.50 and got a bottle of water (yes I know, rookie mistake but I had just finished hitting flush 5 iron shots.) I get the food, the bun is probably bought from Kroger. The pulled pork was ok, but super small size for $9. The sauce reminded of mix between Lysol and sparkling water... I mean there's 50 better places than this in Louisville from a BBQ standpoint. They just have a great location and captive audience. read more

So I came here in July. At the time they were not allowing indoor seating, and only two people inside (one completing their order and the other placing their order). Otherwise you had to wait outside. I did appreciate this extra attention to safety. I ordered a small 50/50 sandwich (Half Pulled Pork, half Brisket. A smaller helping of fire smoked BBQ, comes with house BBQ sauce and a bun.) i chose baked beans and chips as my side. The small is REALLY small, like its basically an oversized slider. There was no choice of sauce which was a shame as I would have liked something a bit spicier. Beans are small but good. I don't know about the chips because when I went to sit down at one of their picnic tables in front the wind caught the open bag and sent all of them flying *shrug* I had been here a few years ago with a few friends (i remember how packed that dining room was - ahhh the strange, carefree days before COVID) and I had been similarly unimpressed since I never wrote a review about it. The food is *OK* but the portions are laughably small and there are very few choices in terms of sauces and sides. Theres not much to choose from in this area though so if I was stuck over here I would go again, but its not my first choice for BBQ in Louisville by far. read more

Parking is on either side of the restaurant. Not a busy road, so it's easy to find a spot there. From the pictures I thought this was a trailer or something (nothing against that since some of the best BBQs I've had were from trailers or food trucks in Texas), but it's a real establishment. Inside are a handful of small tables with a few benches outside for eating. You order at the counter and your food comes in to-go containers no matter if you're eating in or taking it to go. I think the majority of people take it to go since I didn't see anyone dining there at the time (then again, it was a Monday at 4, so that's not a lot to go off of). Good enough for me to call it the neighborhood BBQ spot. ~~Food~~ It's a short and simple menu, which means they focus on what they do best. Sides don't come included. They only had 4, but none of them were really enticing to me. Trying to please any BBQ craving, the meat sampler is your safest bet. I kept hearing about the brisket out here, so I added an extra 1/4 lb to my order. The sample comes with larger helpings of brisket, pulled pork, and ribs than what is described ('cause why would anyone be pleased with 1 spare rib???). Surprisingly, my favorite was the ribs. Not the burnt ends part, but the bigger meaty ones, which the meat came off nicely. I enjoyed eating them without sauce even. Not the meatiest you'll find, but in all fairness, I did get the sampler. Next time I'm getting just ribs. Pulled pork also delighted me. It was juicy and full of flavor without being too salty. Those buns and BBQ sauce made one good pulled pork sandwich. Better than average, I'd also recommend this for next time. Lastly, the brisket. I'm a bit disappointed after hearing so much since it was somewhat dry and lacked flavor. Their creamy dipping sauce is really excellent - they should call it "River Road Secret Sauce" and make a big deal about it. Charge an extra 25 cents for more than 1 cup. Managed to stop in here for lunch one day while in the area and grabbed a couple tacos, the smoked chicken and the pulled pork. Incredible, the best BBQ I've had in Louisville. The slaw was just like I like it, little mayo and a lot of vinegar. The potato salad was spicy and fantastic as well. They have very little seating, about six tables, and it seems like most of their business is probably catering. That said if I were to have an event needing catered this would be first place I would look to. Were it closer to where I live I'd probably be here at least once a week! read more

It's been about two years since I last stopped into River Road BBQ and I was wondering why I don't stop in there more. The barbecue pork sandwiches are excellent with a side of baked beans and slaw. I was getting the large sandwich which was more than enough to put on two sandwiches so I always grab an extra bun. My boyfriend and came here and ordered food on a Saturday. I had never been here but he has. We both wanted Ribs. The lady at the counter suggested that we get two large orders of ribs that would be enough to feed the both of us. Considering he's 6'6 250IBS I was impressed. We followed her suggestion and also got two pints of potato salad and mac and chez. She was correct. There were enough ribs with some leftover. The ribs had so much flavor and were so meaty. So good that I decided to go back yesterday ( Wednesday ) for my kids who love good BBQ. I called in my order and head that way. I ordered 3 LARGE ribs orders and added 2 sides to each order. I get there about 8:10. When I arrived the lady starts packing my order but I noticed 3 very small containers. I walk over and open the container and see that there were three VERY small ribs in this container, I open the other containers and do the same thing. I then go to ask her if this was 3 large orders considering I just paid $50 for this food and she was giving me 9 very small ribs. She says "yes," I told her there is no way that can be right because I was just there a couple of days ago and it was twice that much for 2 large orders. She goes on to say it's funny because they weighed perfect and there were just enough because when she hung up the phone with me a bunch of people came in and all ordered ribs. This throws up another red flag because at this point she could have told me she did not have enough to fulfill my order but she didn't. She then goes on to say well it's only what, $9.75 an order. For me, that is a lot of money being a single mom. I could have gone anywhere but chose to support this particular business. I get the food home and it's cold and we were still hungry. We have come here many times and the food is always pretty good but the man at the counter today was extremely rude to my wife. Okay, maybe one bad interaction. But then we watched as he was rude to other patrons as they walked in the door. This wasn't a matter of not being polite or welcoming. He was just downright mean and rude. If you don't want to be open or work then close, but there is absolutely no excuse to just be flat out rude to everyone that walks in the door and is trying to give you money. Will never be back under any circumstances and highly recommend you pick an awesome place like feast or FABD where they aren't jerks to customers. Perfect place for some quick Louisville-style BBQ! My boyfriend and I made a pit stop here on our way back home headed north; he got the brisket meal and I got the 2 ribs meal. House sauce really made the meals. My ribs were meaty, but I'd probably get the brisket next time (more tender). The menu is simple; I'll presume they only do what they do well, and leave the rest to others. Just three meat options (with perhaps daily specials; they were additionally doing chicken on the Sunday I was there) and a few sides. I got the brisket sandwich with sides of cole slaw and BBQ'd beans ($12). The brisket was thick-cut, relatively lean, and as tender and flavorful as any I've had (no sauce needed). Truly excellent. The sides were good as well, though less generous in terms of portion size. Less impressive was the bread, which was completely lacking in flavor or texture (but which I didn't particularly want or need in any case). Part of me wants to drop my rating to 3*, however, mainly for the price. $12 (plus tax and tip) for a sandwich and two sides is steep for what is ultimately counter-service roadside casual fare, and I'm not sure how often I'll be back. read more

After driving past River Road BBQ many times we made our first visit and were pleased to learn that there is still truth in advertising. The menu stated "a little heat and a little sweet" and that's a spot on description. We picked up two pounds of chopped chicken barbeque ($16 per pound) and right away you notice the sweetness and then the spicy sensation follows. In my view its not heat in so much as the spices provide a great flavor. Its been my experience that most BBQ restaurants don't have the best sides and really I'm going for the BBQ, but the potato salad recipe with onions simply will not disappoint. This was the perfect blend of onion and is some of the better potato salad that I've come across in some time. A small amount of seating is offered inside but I expect most of their business is carryout. For those of us in southern Indiana the now defunct Shawn's Southern BBQ was the high water mark for BBQ in my opinion. This isn't to the level of Shawn's but River Road BBQ has a great product. read more

Small and unassuming off river road, do not let its size deceive you. Menu is small and focused on BBQ. I got an order of the beef brisket sandwich with 2 sides (potato salad mayo style, BBQ beans) and a order of rib tips. When asked about sauce I got it on the side. The sides I had were great, especially the beans. The beans probably use the sauce they make and had bits of pork. There is no need for the sauce at all (sauce is on the sweet side) for the meat, they stand well on their own. Big plus to the fact the brisket pieces I got are huge, could they slice it thinner to make the sandwich more portable, maybe bit it is still good. The rib tips are tender smokey goodness also.
