When your loved one is placed at Hebrew Home, whatever benefits your loved one is receiving goes to the nursing home (this is understandable). Hebrew Home will then place a $50.00 monthly allowance into a "personal account" for the resident for things such as haircuts, or for the purchase of other items/necessities that may be available through different vendors. BEWARE: In the event that your loved one passes away DO NOT attempt to claim any existing/leftover funds from your loved ones "personal account" directly from Hebrew Home. DO NOT tell Hebrew Home that the funeral has been fully paid for as they will send the funds from that "personal account" to the Public Administrator. Have the funeral home send an invoice to Hebrew Home and then have the funds distributed to you. When I tried to recover the funds from my loved ones "personal account", Hebrew Home told me that "by law" those funds had to be returned to The Office of The Public Administrator. Personally, I believe that "law" was designed to appropriate those funds. I now believe that this law was designed so that the city/county/municipality/state can stay with your loved ones money. Hebrew Home will never tell you this, but I will and I have. BEWARE....Where the law exists the trap or trick exists!!!

I will list what I know they have and I am sure I am missing something. First off, there are homes on the perimeter of the main building where residents who are retired can live on their own. These homes are pretty spectacular. The main residence has fully furnished apartments within a large facility. These apartments have large bedrooms, a very nice kitchen and a lovely living room area. The amenities are....seating dining area for lunch and dinner. Breakfast is delivered to the residents rooms each morning. There is a buffet dining room area. There is a bistro dining area. There is also a fine dining area which requires reservations and appropriate dress. I think there is another dining area but with so many dining areas I was getting a bit confused as to the options. Beauty salon with full services including manicures, library, banking, bingo, music hall on one floor and auditoriums on another floor. Exercise classes, art classes, all sorts of crafting classes, Swimming pool, movie area. There are common areas on the floors with large screen TV's for everyone to gather and watch TV. There is a thrift store on site open at specific times during the week. There are social workers on site that coordinate with the residents on activities to keep the residents up and moving. Medications are brought to the residents rooms daily at the time they are to take the medications. No worrying if your loved one has forgotten their medications at this place.They have a bus that takes residents shopping and also car service for off site events. Basically their own personal Uber. All of these amenities are in the living area where residents can live on their own with little or no assistance. Some of the residents do have their own aids that stay with them. Some residents have their dogs and are able to walk them on the lovely campus. This place is beautiful and has a beautiful setting. Off of the main building is the nursing home living area. This is for residents who need specialized and more monitored assistance. Even this area is amazing. Like no other care facility I have ever visited. As long as the resident is not bed ridden, they are up and in a common area either watching TV or participating in another activity. There are two floors to the nursing area. There is a common dining room where everyone eats their meals. They residents dine with a nursing assistant incase they need specialized help with eating. After eating the residents return to the common area to again watch TV or participate in other activities. The specialized nursing facility has residents rooms which in no way feel like a nursing home. Residents can bring in their own decorating items from home. Between each little quad of rooms is a common seating area with large screen TV's and books to read. There is a pantry with cereals, juices, milk and nutritional drinks in every flavor. It looks like the ratio of aids to patients is 2 to 1. No worry that your forgetful loved one might walk offsite without the facility being aware. The residents wear special watches which set off alarms should they go beyond the facilities doors. Only those patients that have a tendency to wander and be a bit forgetful wear these watches. This is a 5 star long term living resort for your loved one. If you can afford it, this is the place for any senior needing a little or a lot of extra help to live.

I have been a resident for a few months now and I highly recommend it. The location is extraordinary. It is on a quiet street, but two blocks from the hustle and bustle of downtown Flushing with its many stores and transportation options. Manhattan is an easy commute, just a 5-minute walk to the LIRR station and a 15-minute ride to Penn Station or Grand Central. I work part-time in Manhattan, and I've never had an easier commute! Queens College, with its plays and excellent musical offerings, is a quick ride on a nearby bus. Flushing Town Hall with its stellar jazz program is four blocks away. The beautiful Flushing Library is an easy walk, as is Macy's and one of the best pizzerias in Queens. Here at Flushing House itself, there are many interesting offerings - book club, language clubs, exercise programs, both domestic and foreign movies, and a lovely rooftop atrium that is open 24 hours a day. There are many food options at each meal and, once you realize all the choices you have ( on and off the menu) you can always find something you like. One can pick up meals and take them back to one's apartment, but the communal dining room has been a way for me to meet other residents and make the acquaintance of some lovely people. The staff is kind, hardworking and understanding with residents (even when a resident might be cranky!). My apartment is very sunny, clean, and comfortable, and weekly housekeeping is included. If you are an active older adult wondering what the next step in life should be, come to one of the frequent open houses that Flushing House hosts and see for yourself. You may find, as I did, that it is a lovely place in a great location with a price that is very reasonable considering all that is included.

I have filed a complaint with the state attorney general's office and I will be taking Flushing House to court. If they are so shoddy in administration, how could they possibly be doing a good job running the independent living facility? I am just glad we decided not to put my elderly parents here. I had to fight to get toilet paper, yes toilet paper. No one was on the same page. There were no universal processes so everything was CHAOS. You wait and wait and wait for even pain meds. Under staffed severely. I was "discharged" last Friday without knowing I had to do it myself. I had to call the nurse at the front desk to tell her I was leaving. No one ever told me this. OMG again, I almost lost the chartered car service waiting to take me home as this nonsense was so time consuming. AND worse yet, I was sent home WITHOUT my very vital meds (heart meds!!). I called and no one knew who could do anything. The meds were there and they were so stupid they couldn't possibly just call a messenger service or send someone to me (I live 10 blocks away). They did not call in any meds to my pharmacy. This just happened and I am now going into my 4th day of no heart meds. It is a disaster and disgrace. AVOID like the plague.

Morningside Gardens is what is known as a naturally occurring retirement community, or NORC for short, and MRHS plays an invaluable role in fostering the health of the community through discussion groups, film screenings, technology classes, and other educational or supportive services. Explaining the importance of MRHS is hard without a little history. Morningside Gardens was one of the first owner-occupied co-ops in NYC, and has about 980 units. Since it's development in 1957, the co-op has been home to many, most notably Thurgood Marshall, America's first African American Supreme Court justice, and formed the basis of the Mitchell-Lama law, which led to many similar co-operative housing facilities. Coming from mostly social work backgrounds, MRHS staff are dedicated to the residents and a newly redesigned space (paid for in part by capital funds requested by Assembly Member Daniel O'Donnell) ensures that residents have a clean, modern, and spacious place to hold events.
