How does one properly end a mouthwatering meal at Stereo? By next booking it to Riverhill, of course. Recommended to us by our new friends at the Apple store, Riverhill isn't just a coffee shop. It also sells some of the most delicious and finely crafted pastries you will ever taste as well as some of the richest, creamiest, most delicious hot chocolate in the land. Three types of hot chocolate are sold, and the 70% dark was enough to tempt me when paired with the flan brésilien and gluten-free peanut butter cookie. Yes, I had both. Everything was delivered with a smile and although the seating space is limited, I could spend hours in there just soaking up the environment. They sell real food here that I haven't tried, but who cares. Riverhill, you already have my heart. read more

Great place to buy a coffee, hot chocolate and their iced cascara tea. Cascara tea actually comes from the dried cherries from the coffee tree, it's really good and refreshing. Oh my goodness, I wish I worked within walking distance of this gorgeous cafe to spend my lunch breaks here. I had the most delicious sandwich here last Saturday afternoon. Do you know, I'm not even going to call it a sandwich in case you mistake it for something you might have to eat if you found yourself in Eat across the street. Popped in for a fuel stop while shopping - aforementioned sandwich, two delicious coffees and a slice of toffee apple cake later and I was ready to roll home. Note that seating is very limited, and all in high, backless stools - my mum would have hated eating here. Great buzz about the place with lots of coming and going, but not the place for spreading the papers out and lingering. Very sweet staff, great value for the choice of hand-made salads, sandwiche, soups, baking and pastries. Right opposite Central station; I'll be skipping M&S and stopping in here for my next train picnic. read more

I have been here a couple of times now and tried to visit few more times than that, but usually left because it was to busy to get a seat. Still I guess it's a good sign of just how popular this little coffee shop is. They do Dear Green which is always a positive indicator that your going to get a good cup of coffee. I get so much good coffee in work that it's not normally a driver of where I go when outside of work. The thing that interests me most is the food!! Riverhill is well known for its huge variety and impressive range of cakes. It's hard to ever imagine getting a bad one. The last time I visited though I avoided the sugary treats and went savoury instead. I had a Swiss cheese and egg mayo bagel and it was phenomenal. Really filling and packed with flavour. My boyfriend, very kindly, has a habit of popping in to my work and asking if I would like to head out for lunch. "For you, darling, anything... As long as it fits within a 30 minute time frame." This means we almost always end up at Riverhill. Just moments from Central Station, and a hop, skip and jump from my shop, Riverhill offers those with a mere 30 minute window the chance to grab a sandwich and coffee before having to power walk back to their responsibilities. The selection of sandwiches change on a daily basis, but they're mostly what you would expect from a cafe almost exclusively staffed by young guys with beards. The Cuban (pulled pork, ham, pickle and cheese) is my boyfriend's favourite, while today I went for smoked salmon, egg mayo, mustard and salad. They also do cous cous, salad, pasta bakes and I believe I once saw a crayfish and coleslaw packed bagel that teasingly begged me to eat it. It's not exactly cheap, with most lunch options costing between £4-£4.50, but you do get bags of flavour, and something altogether more wholesome and homemade than anything Starbucks could offer. The coffee is Dear Green, which I have to admit is not my favourite, but I routinely order it anyway. I always gaze longingly at the display case of cakes, which tower over me. They seduce me, telling me that they're gluten-free and full of poppy seed goodness, when really I know they're thick with cream and icing and the sort of delicious things that cause me to put on 10lbs just by setting eyes on them. If you don't have as complicated a relationship with cake as I do, then I urge you to try one and tell me in great detail what i'm missing out on. At lunch time the cafe is always mobbed and you have to either give up any hope of eating in, or patiently wait for a stool to become available. I'm a big fan of the "embarrass the selfish business person" technique, which involves loudly asking some idiot to move their bags so other people can sit down, but if you're not so bold rest assured that the customer turn around is so fast you'll probably get a stool eventually. The only real gripe I have with Riverhill is the service. It has a tendency to be a bit all over the place, with very little communication between staff and a bit of general confusion. On several occasions I've had to remind the blank-faced guy at the till that he hasn't actually charged me for my food yet, and only some times does he remember to give me my card back afterwards. But hey, it's part of it's charm I suppose. read more

YES. FINALLY. A good, authentic sorry-I'm-not-sorry-HIP coffee place. As a continental European, I have been dying for a place like this in the city centre, and finally it's here. The flat white is great, so is their macchiato (which actually is one, and not the weird over-sugared over-creamed thing you get at Starbucks), and everything comes quick and hot. It's good stuff. Their cakes - which come deliciously glutenous as well as gluten-free - are also always moist and scrumpous. Totally and utterly thumbs up from here. read more

What a splendid little coffee shop! We stopped in here twice while visiting Glasgow - once to take away and once to stay there. My husband enjoyed some cappuccinos and I really loved their Earl Grey tea. They use a really nice loose leaf tea blend that took quite a while to steep, but gave a very lovely bergamot flavor. I tried their cranberry brownie - YUM! The brownie itself wasn't very sweetened, but combined with the dried fruit and enjoyed with a drink, it was just great. My husband enjoyed their carrot cake. Definitely a great little independent coffee spot. We'll definitely remember it next time we're in Glasgow! read more

I don't think I can ever get enough of this place. Amazing & different selection of baguettes, wraps and rolls. And I mean really different - I don't think you would find recipes like theirs I many other places, which is why I love it. Their chicken shwarma is one of my favourites that I can eat time and time again. They also toast for you which is a bonus! Their large range of cakes (depending what time you go in) differ daily and always look super appealing and I have had a couple which never disappoint. I had lime and coconut drizzle cake, and a Spiced apple crumble last time. Oh yum. Coffee wise they do Dear Green and support locally but I often like to try their guest expresso - a fun alternative. I would love to see last week's "Rwanda" again which was nice and strong. Seating area is often tight and queues can be understandably all the way out the door too so make sure you are prepped to queue and take your food away if going during lunchtime! One of the highlights of my trip to Scotland. Perfectly crafted Lattes with Oat milk. Sadly there was no drip coffee option. We consumed two of their vegan baked goods washed down with a latte and an americano. I don't think you can go wrong here so just come and order 1 of everything! Friendly staff that, even while crowded in a small space, will not make you feel rushed in you caffeine deprived state. In the gentrified bubble of the West End, you can't move for quality coffee shops. Siempre, Avenue G, Papercup. The list is endless. So why the hell has it taken me so long to find a decent coffee place in the city? I only stumbled upon Riverhill Cafe because I got the Pretty Green loyalty card, which actually helped to highlight some other hidden gems in and around the City. As is often the case, this is another cafe which is a victim of its own success: Riverhill always seems to be on the verge of being queued out the door. The coffee is the real reason to pop in. They have all the latest coffee making gadgets (Aeropress, V60 Dripper et al.) at their disposal, as well as an excellent selection of Pretty Green coffees, but the food and cakes shouldn't be overlooked. On my last trip, I decided to sit in and opted for a chicken shawarma, which was very tasty, if a little pricey. The service is friendly and light touch, and I really rate the barista. So everyone on the office had been raving about the chicken shwarama sandwich so I decided to try it out. Having lived in Dubai I had high expectations. The sandwiches are all ready to go and I had to wait about 5 minutes for it to be heated. Which is fine. But given the ridicoulsly narrow nature of here proved a little tricky. I either felt like I was on the way of the people making coffee or the people drinking it. The shwarama was a good attempt on an authentic one, all be it not a classic copy. The baked goods looked really good but more west end then city centre priced. Will be back to try something else but will probably always stick with takeout as the seating area is fairly compact. read more

Thought I would get out of the pouring rain and decided to visit Riverhill. When I got there, I placed my sit in order and before I could take one of the two empty seats, some father and son came in behind me and grabbed the seats. Mighty unfair and less than proper behaviour in my book. I had to stand and have my cappucino which was luke warm. The behaviour of the aforementioned customers detracted from my experience! I have yet to taste one bite from this delightful venue that I have not absolutely loved. First and foremost I became obsessed with their cakes. These aren't just cakes - they aren't even M & S cakes - they are THEE only cakes that matter! Working just around the corner, suffice to say myself and my work colleagues spend half out wages on boxes of delights. Think you know Empire biscuits? Not until you've taken a bite out of this bad boy. Think caramel shortcake is pretty delish? You'll die of happiness eating their billionaire shortcake (thickest layer of caramel ever). Think Brownies are moreish? Well - och you get the idea. Cake cake cake. Now you'll be needing a coffee to go with that tonne of cake, right? Riverhill is really up there with the best coffee in the city - however it is a wee bit pricey, about £2.50 for a latte. Totally worth it - but an expensive habit if you start going every day. Cakes are pricey too - the shortcake is £3 for a slice - albeit a mammoth one. The best addition to the much loved venue is the adition of the sit-in cafe. I can't stop ordering the halloumi flatbread every visit, however there really is a delightful selection that's a little out of the norm. Choose from the chicken shwarma wrap, gnocchi, veggie curries, steak flatbreads and daily specials - it's not one for plain or fussy eaters - and that's why anyone who wants a little refreshing nosh for lunch will breathe a sigh of relief. Good for grabbing a cake on the go. Riverhill is a little coffee bar on Gordon St about the same size as most other coffee shops' bathrooms. For this reason you'd be wise to take away unless you enjoy facing a brick wall and people bumping into your back. Saying that there is a really friendly atmosphere about the place. Don't be scared off by long queues though the service is pretty swift. Despite the name and emphasis on coffee in the shop it's really nothing special, expect weak milk drinks and bland espresso. It won't be awful but it won't be great either, hence why I rate them down a wee bit. They are still a massive step up from Pret/Starbucks etc though and the best place to get your caffeine fix on the way to central station. The real reason to go is for all the delicious food, especially their cake selection. They're famous for the empire biscuit but their caramel millionaires are truly sublime and they also change the offering up often. A far better place to grab a bite than all the massive chains surrounding them. read more

Popped in for a coffee on Saturday afternoon after reading so many positive reviews. The cafe is very small and there are not so many seats, so I imagine would be really difficult to find a seat at lunch time through the week! We were lucky enough to find the cafe half empty and had a sit - just in time before a group of 5 guys got in and occupy the whole place lol. The ambiance is really nice and cozy, really like the wood effect they created and the brick walls. Staff was so nice and chatty, really put a smile on my face. I ordered a flat white and my boyfriend had a white hot chocolate (they give you a choice of milk, dark or white chocolate for your hot chocolate - nice!). They had a good selection of cakes and pastries and also sandwiches, wraps, quiche and pasta. As i said, we only went for hot drinks, that's why I am only giving it 4 stars, but we will surely go back to try their food as really looked delicious, and will make sure i update my review! read more

. I got into Glasgow earlier then my sat morning training had started and I felt being up so early and going to a training entitled me to a treat . I decided to go with yelps suggestions rather then my normal Starbucks choice .... Which I am so glad I did because this place was wonderful! I had an amazing soya latte , deep Rich coffee , smooth and dark . Delicious home baking I had the pumpkin bar with chocolate on top and marshmallows on top! So amazing! I dream of it when I think of being in Glasgow !!! The staff was Friendly and chatty . Cute place the main downfall in my mind was that it's mostly for take away . There's a few Stool seats along a bar and I think a small table by the window... If the weather is nice they might have a table outside but still very limited seating! You wouldn't really "meet for coffee" here with someone incase all the seats were taken! I imagine since its in the city centre loads of people go there on their lunch breaks or before work so it works for them . The savoury food sounded good from others reviews hopefully in the future will have a chance to try it... But only if there's seats so I don't have anywhere to take the food :( read more

Overall I love Riverhill. My first love being their cakes!!!!........I have a complete love affair with cakes and enjoy travelling around the city savouring them all. I have almost always been impressed with Riverhills offerings, I particularly like that they often have a 'healthy' cake option - i there such a thing?? I have been converted let me tell you, healthy cake does exist...sort of! My most favourite is the dairy and/or gluten free (can't remember which) chocolate marble cake. My only complaint is its very rare for them to have it. Hint hint!!! I did once buy the lemon and vanilla gluten free cupcakes to entice a friend and in all honesty they were beyond rotten (and £2.50 each!). Dry, gritty, felt like you could smash a window with it.......ended up in the bin. I love their sandwich options, its great to have choice other than the usual boring fare offered elsewhere. In particular I love the chicken shawarma. Same goes with the salad options, all look great and the mushroom soup is deli. I only have 2 gripes, firstly is the price. The food it is a very expensive option, having said that its fancy offerings and a little bit special!!! Secondly is the coffee, again this is down to my own personal preference. My cappuccino is always too milky and therefore too weak. I don't buy my coffee here anymore on that basis. Otherwise can't fault it!! read more

Popped in boxing day amazed to find it open. Was just gone 10 am and the espresso machine was still warming up. Now many places would just run coffee through it and charge for a inferior cup. Not these guys and that's because they care. I popped back after finding a newspaper nearby and it was worth the wait. Very nice coffee. Nice cake. Chilled service. It's a very small place with just a couple of thin wall shelves and associated stools, but there's a steady stream of take away customers so it feels busy. It's a decent option but not one I'd spend much time in because I like a nice table and comfy chair. For the coffee tho' it's worth your time. One of the best in the city and so much better than the rather nasty Gordon St Coffee opposite. read more

Now that I am back in Glasgow I didn't realize how crowded town can get in the summertime! Super packed with tourists and people visiting for the games I decided to escape the crowds and grab a quick drink at the nearest spot that caught my eye. I saw this small slice of blue heaven from the corner of my eye and decided to pop in, SO happy I did. The Coffee bar isn't the biggest place but it is just right, not too crowded with a good amount of seating along the walls and in the front window (perfect for my love of people watching!) The workers are SUPER kind and helpful to a amateur coffee drinker such as myself. I basically asked what their most popular coffee drink was and they recommended their flat white. There are SOOOO many delicious choices of food from lunch time meals to sweet treats that go well with coffee. I kept eying a pile of delicious cookies right by the register with a sign above them: "Crack Cookies"....The name obviously left me intrigued so I decided to get one with my flat white and head to window for some grubbing. The Coffee was incredible! Defo my fav in Glasgow by far. The crack cookie was awesome, totally hooked from the first bite of the marshmallowy, cornflakey, white/milk chocolate chip goodness. I loved the atmosphere in Riverhill and would for sure recommend it to anyone for a nice relaxing break from the craziness of the city centre. read more

a decent coffee shop? in the city centre? fack! but not just decent coffee, a range of cakes that basically had me spoiled for choice to the point of tizziness. plus great original savouries! no chance of a pie which was a shame, but the savory on offer was great. this place is magical, I love it when you can walk into a place and think "hmm, I fancy a bit of everything..." great cakes, great savouries, great coffee. I beg to differ that their flat white beats artisan roast, but it's an exceptionally good effort. artisan roast has the coffee at the right temperature, the right taste, and the right velvety texture. Popped in at lunch time today after reading all of the recommendations on here and I'm glad I did. The staff were the friendliest bunch of any coffee shop in the city centre (only the woman in the Starbucks on Exchange Place is as nice). This might not seem too important but I'll always go back when the staff have a good attitude and recognise you on repeat visits. We ordered two cappuccinos and a vanilla and berry tart which was delivered to our seats very quickly. The cappuccinos were probably the best I've tasted in town for a long while. I usually go to Tinderbox (poor coffee and rubbish staff) or Starbucks (feeding the corporate beast) and these were just a class ahead. The tart was fresh, well presented and delicious. After eating and drinking walked back up to the office before remembering that I hadn't paid....oops! A run back down to pay the bill of £6.something which I though was also very good value compared to their rivals. I'll be back soon and I'll be trying out one of their toasties. read more

I don't cakecheck Instagram on a daily basis (yet), but did manage to catch Riverhill's shot of their black forest cake (vegan special) this morning. Musing over where to go to in the city centre for an iced coffee I didn't see much point in considering anywhere else. I was delighted to see the little bench outside in its suntrap was vacant and hoped I could put my order in and nab it before someone else. I ordered an iced soya latte and a slab of that cake and after the server said he'd bring it out to me I sat down, earphones in to the radio, pen & my Edinburgh Fringe brochure, and got as comfy as I could on a slightly wobbly bench on a high street. I sat alone in my own little world of caffeine, sunshine, and chocolate, thinking to myself that I'd head off after the next song that came on the radio, then the next one... then the next one, until I'd sat there for 40 minutes and stretched out my coffee for as long as I felt politely possible. Only one passerby decided to interrupt me despite me having my headphones in. I have no idea what he said but he looked very interested in my cake. My only complaint was I'd have preferred a size of coffee a bit more grande, however I did like the funky looking blue straw. read more

Super cute small venue. Not really much seating but thats fine. Limited drink choices but plenty of food options. I ordered my drink, she made it and then I paid but apparently you can have some sort of tab system there as she gave me the option to pay later. I had to collect my coffee but my friend got hers brought to her. I then ordered a sandwich to go and waited 15 minutes before asking to see if it was ready. Apparently it had been ready for ages and was just sitting on the side and no one had bothered to tell me even though I we were the only people in the cafe a the time. No toilets. The drinks were reasonably priced but the food was expensive for what you got. Looked nice, tasted average. read more

Finally got around to visiting Riverhill and I wasn't dissapointed. A selection of seriously impressive sandwiches, big crusty rolls and baguettes full to the brim with good stuff. I chose a poached salmon baguette with crisp lettuce and cucumber and a tasty dill and lemon mayo. At £4.50 it's about the same price as Pret but since they don't chill the sandwiches you can actually taste the flavours! I was in awe of their cake display and I can't wait to sample one of their chocolate and raspberry cupcakes (and everything else!) The chicken shawarma also looked tempting. The staff were smiley and chatty which is always a bonus. Marks off for the lack of seating, they only have around ten high stools to perch on and this is why it's taken me so long to visit, they do fill up fast. A small place, with a warm atmosphere and lovely staff. They have a coffee bar and a place for lunch - both equally lovely. A friend of mine loves the place for it's brunch options but I tried it for lunch. Their menu and daily options are very interesting. When I was there they had soups like Ukranian Borscht, going along Katsu Curry Baguette or daily curry options. The choice was fantastic! I had the Philly Steak Baguette and it was delicious. Would definitely come again - both for the very friendly staff and lovely food. read more

This is my favourite lunch spot in central Glasgow and I have recommended it to many friends, colleagues and tourists. It's pretty tiny so you pretty much have to take away what you order, but I work in the area so it's not an issue for me. The lunch options include a variety of sandwiches, some of which come toasted, plus soup, salad, quiches etc. My vegetarian friends have always been happy with what's on offer-interesting and tasty veggie food can be hard to find. The coffee is also good, and the cakes are far too tempting to resist! The selection changes, but tends to have something for everyone-even gluten free and vegan options. I LOVED the chocolate brownie so much that I struggle to choose anything else. Service is quick and friendly, and you can always take your food to the river! Well worth a visit read more
