I never met a chicken quesadilla I never liked until now. I came in to order to go and wasn't sure how I felt about the 5 minute wait for the food, I liked how it was fast but was skeptic about the quality. I was expecting the same as the Morris plains location which had shredded chicken which was amazing but this chicken looked like chicken you'd get from a frozen tv dinner and some pieces were hard and not much quantity which I didn't mind since I couldn't finish it. Haven't really found our "Go To" Mexican place in the area yet, and we decided to try RM. The tableside Guac was top notch. The $5 margaritas were yummy. The chips were good, the salsa excellent. And refilled quickly! The service was good. Oh yeah... Linen napkins, a nice touch. Ambience was colorful and spacious. Our entrees were OK-- not exciting, but we ate everything. The chicken quesadilla was very good. Will definitely go again for the guacamole and the appetizers and the margaritas. And we will try the entrees again, hopefully they can make them a little more interesting. read more

Have been thinking to go to this place for a while now. Made plans multiple times but finally got a chance to go. I am glad that I did. The ambience obviously the typical local mexico style set up. I would love to give this place a 4 star review....the cocktails were awesome. ...great coconut margaritas. ...the food was some of the best ever... very colorful decor. However if you want to talk to the person you are with during dinner - forget it!! They gave some sort if wandering Mariachi band. .....LOUD LOUD LOUD. You can't even hear each other talk....then you start screaming to be heard.....such a bummer. The bar would have been a perfect place for them. ..and after the dinner rush. Went here on Father's Day 2017 for dinner with my party of 6. I was hoping it would not be too busy for a 6pm Sunday dinner, but when we arrived they were taking names for a waitlist. The hostess said our wait might be 25-30 minutes, but the were able to seat us in less than 15 minutes! Despite how busy the restaurant was, our service and food were fantastic. Our waiter was very attentive and made sure drinks were promptly refilled and chips/salsa kept in steady supply on the table. The food was well-priced and portions were large. Having been to this location when it was a a successful diner, I've felt that the inhabitants after that never got it right or had a great menu...until now. Riviera Maya presents a great dining experience, with attentive service and a joyous and light atmosphere. The last time we went, on a busy Saturday night, there was a twenty minute wait. We decided to sit at the bar while we waited, and enjoyed a traditional margarita. It was done right. All I tasted was freshness, with a salted rim...thinking about it makes me want one right now! Our table was ready after a short wait, and as soon as we sat, we immediately ordered the guacamole. It's made table side, to your liking, & is to die for. The fresh salsa and chips that are given to you are also super tasty. The salsa has a great hint of cilantro and is mild in it's spice level. We went on to order dinner. This time I opted for a supreme burrito with chicken & requested jalapeños added to it, and it was not a problem. I was even asked if I wanted them cooked or raw. It was supremely delicious and huge...I couldn't even finish half of it but that could be because of all the chips & guac I ate. My husband ordered a trio platter of chimichanga, enchilada, & taco. It comes with a side of rice & beans done right. You can order the trio in different styles, with whatever meat you want or meatless if that's what you'd prefer. We loved our meals and can't wait to go back for more! I have been here a number of times and am never disappointed. With it's truly authentic food, it's my favorite go-to for Mexican. I have been twice, which was plenty enough for me to never go back. The first time around the service was terrible. The food for some reason took a long time to come out (the place was no where near packed), was not particularly good, but the major issue was our server. Once the food was dropped off, he never came back to the table to see how our food was (was inaccurate) and-- wait for it-- to bring refills. That's pretty vital when eating spicy Mexican food! I gave them a second shot since I liked their decor/atmosphere and I like Mexican food; while the service was much better (food was still just okay) my issue this time was a huge crack in the middle of the glass. How negligent can you be? It took me a couple large gulps of clearing the spiciness from my mouth to notice the huge crack in it (literally about 3in diagonally). When the glass is empty, the crack is clear as day. The best part was when I told my server that I needed a new glass and showed him the long crack... he was shocked by it, apologized, but still moronically inquired if I dropped the glass/damaged it myself (out of curiosity, I suppose). Yes, of course. I dropped the glass then proceeded to somehow fill 1/3 of it with the rest of my soda. That was the last straw. Pun intended. read more

Dinner on Friday night June 6. Riviera Maya was packed as always While waiting we found two seats at the bar and opted to order from there. The regular bartender is a great guy and always provides excellent service. We ordered Margaritas on the rocks which were delish as always. Love their salsa because it tastes fresh made and is always good. The guacamole is really excellent too fresh made and always tasty. We both chose enchiladas one chicken and one shredded beef with the Mole Poblano sauce. The chicken was a good choice and match well with the dense chocolaty sauce. The beef was not so good. It was cut in strips not shredded and was very tough and chewy. Shredded beef should be moist and shredded not strips of shoe leather. We've eaten here several times and like it. It's the best Mexican joint in the area for sure. It does seem like they get stressed when they are slammed which is odd because they are always busy at prime time. We will be back but don't think we will order the shredded beef until they learn how to shred it correctly. read more

Ate here during the first two weeks. Didn't like it. Everything was too sweet, service inadequate. Seems like they adjusted nicely. The red sangria was good, and the Enchilada Barbacoa (lamp) was wonderful. The service was knowledgeable, not intrusive (a common annoyance), and timely. I had the fish tacos, they were very flavorful and came with a "slaw". Really liked the fish. The rice and beans were cooked well, not under-done. Went with a bunch of co-workers. The service was slow but that is expected when you go with 10 people at lunchtime. I expect the service to be better if it was a smaller table and more of a dinner crowd. read more

Having used to live in Dover, Rockaway, and Parsippany my boyfriend and I frequented this place. Now living in Montclair we have found some closer Mexican gems but still hold a soft spot for Riviera Maya. Last night we were in the area and starving and it was also National Taco Day so we decided to visit our old favorite. The place had quite a few customers despite being 8pm on a Sunday. We were seated immediately and chips and salsa served within minutes. Only negative is that they don't serve water as quickly as the salsa because that salsa is super spicy. The waiter, Jose, was enthusiastic and nice. He mainly spoke Spanish to my boyfriend but was willing to repeat in English for my gringa ears. We wanted margaritas and he suggested the strawberry or mango ones. I was little confused that he didn't mention the original lime margarita but we went with the mango. And it was AMAZING. I ordered the Tacos Placeros, or street tacos. I had the cochinita pibil and carnitas tacos. The cochinita pibil was amazing as was the carnitas. Only thing about the carnitas is that it is a bit too greasy for my liking. I also am not a big fan of the sauce they provide, a sort of smoky chipotle pepper sauce, probably because of the chipotle since I don't really like that flavor. The waiter was wonderful. He did speak mostly Spanish, though, which kind of bugged me because when my boyfriend translated he was saying very nice things but I couldn't react properly due to not comprehending. I've been here a few of times now and I've noticed a change in the quality. The first couple of visits the food was delicious, service was incredible, and the mango margarita was probably one of the best I've ever had. I went again yesterday to celebrate my birthday, along with my fiance's birthday. As we walk in, I let the hostess know that we're there to celebrate our birthdays. She asked me for our names and said no problem. As we were seated, our waiter promptly took our drink orders. About a minute later, he came back and asked if we were ready to order. We hadn't opened our menus, but knew we wanted the tableside guac. Our waiter came back with some chips and salsa (which was probably the best part of our meal). About 20 minutes go by and our waiter comes by to take our order for entrees. We give him our orders but kindly mention that we were still waiting for the guac. It appears he forgot, because a few seconds later we had guac prepared at our table. We received our meals pretty quick but both lacked flavor. My fiance ordered the Taco Salad and it had no dressing on it. We finished our meals and the waiter brought our check over and said have a nice day. I'm guessing the hostess forgot to tell him its our birthdays. At this point we were just over it so we left. Will think twice about going back. read more

Only down side is the lay out of the restaurant makes it very hard to have a conversation while dining because it's so loud, also the meals are a little on the higher priced side. I'm a HUGE fan of Mexican food and have been looking for a great place in the area for quite sometime! My parents visited about 2 months ago and told me to check this place out and let me tell you I don't regret it one bit. I went in during happy hour and enjoyed my meal at the bar. $4 margaritas...how can you go wrong?! My 2 friends and I split the chimichangas, which were amazing! For my entree I got the chicken fajitas, which came in a huge portion! Definitely worth a try people! The service was excellent and we only had to wait a short time for our food! Went back for another visit of course!! Was very tempted to order another Burrito Supremo but at the last second, my brother ordered tacos and I couldn't resist the craving. Instead I ordered fish tacos and wasn't sorry! I probably prefer the Burrito Supremo but the tacos were still delicious. Kind of Build-Your-Own in the sense that the rice and beans come on the side but that just makes it more fun :) The lime served on my plate was a bit dried out but I know restaurants so I know that tends to happen come dinner-time. The service was a bit slow. We waited quite awhile to initially order, then awhile to wrap up the food we wanted to take home, and then awhile to pay our bill but we got to our movie in time so that's all that mattered! Had no vegetarian options, which in a world where there's a lot of vegetarians now I would of thought there would have been a few options without having to ask for something without the meat. Got the nachos grande off the appetizer section and it came out cold while my boyfriend and our friends food came out steaming hot. Let me begin by saying this pains me so badly to leave 2 stars. For several years my family and I have been good customers. This was by far, the best Mexican food in the area. Then covid happened. The staff we knew has all disappeared. The chefs also must have gone back to Cancun and were replaced by completely incompetent people. First off, the menu has been cut down by at least half. Second, the times when guacamole was custom made at the table side are long gone. Took a while to get our drinks, ok, but when the guacamole arrived it was like a watered down version made the day prior. Complete disappointment. The entrees took about 40 minutes to arrive, and the cactus steak my fiancée got looked like a piece of grey tire with veg all canned veggies poured on top. Bizarre. My father ordered beef burrito and it was nothing like the original. It was like pulled pork with bbq sauce. The quesadilla my mom ordered was burned. My shrimps were decent and pretty similar to the original. I really miss the old riviera with authentic Mexican cuisine. Maybe after the extra unemployment ends our old waiters and chefs will return. Until then, we will not return, I can get much better food at chipotle. read more

This has always been my favorite restaurant until the last I went. I believe they have re-adjusted the portion size, so I only got 1/2 of what I normally get. I adore their Chili Rellenos and they always gave you 2 chilies, but this time I got 1, cut in half and spread out on the plate to make it look bigger. I got the combinations of 3 which was huge and very reasonably priced; it's basically 3 entrees served with rice beans and salsa. Mine had the steak chimichanga, the ground beef stuffed publano chili and and chicken taco. All was excellent, but the steak was rubbery and very hard to chew, the rice was a little undercooked and lacked flavor. A while back we went to Riviera Maya and had a very so-so meal. Since then it has been great, so maybe the chef called in sick the night we were unimpressed. The service is always expedient, attentive, and friendly. The food is decent for NJ. I mean, if you're from Texas, as we are, you have to step your expectations down a notch, just like when you're in Texas, you do the same for their Italian food. But all-in-all, Rivierva Maya is a good bet for the area and I think their house margaritas are good. We go there often and I enjoy ordering the Birria de Pollo - a traditional dish. I always have plenty to take home for lunch the next day. The table side guacamole is good, too. The atmosphere is cheerful and upbeat. We're regulars! read more

Excellent chips and salsa! Pitchers of Margaritas reasonable and delicious. Had straight on the rocks excellent and can say Strawberry pitchers will satisfy and were fantastic. Different presentation on the food-rice and beans just so/ so. I had chicken Maya with fresh fruits and grilled chicken-a winner. Also, hubby had shrimp quesadillas-absolutely delicious. Guacamole awesome, BIL said shrimp enchiladas good. SIL Burrito pretty standard-everyone else liked their meals. Would definitely go back again. Might go just for appetizers and more pitchers!!!! I try so hard to like this place but when your plate is hotter than the food that sits on it, chicken is dry.
