So it was my first time at this restaurant and I was a little disappointed with the food. I ordered the shredded steak tacos with rice and beans. The rice and beans were decent. The shredded steak was a bit dry and hard to swallow. The meal was a good portion for $13. I just wish it was more flavorful. I also had their horchata rice drink and it was very grainy.... Not what I'm use to and not the best I've had... Kind of disappointed in that too. One thing I did enjoy was the live band singing and playing instruments, visiting every table! I thought that was really nice of them to do. They even took song requests but too bad I didn't know any Spanish music... Plenty of parking at this Rockaway location and the wait staff were pretty attentive. Love it here! Such a great, diverse menu of authentic Mexican food! Got the quesadilla with truffle and vegetables, so great! A mariachi band goes around the restaurant singing to every table and the take requests! The youngest band member has the voice of an angel! Our waiter was Chris, and he was so genuine and helpful! We ordered our baby's food right away and it never came, we ordered drinks with water, drinks came no water. We asked three more times before water was finally given to us. My daughter ordered a taco salad and it came with nothing on it but chicken and lettuce. We said something and was told that's how it comes, we showed our waitress the menu and she just did not care. Our granddaughter accidentally knocked over my drink. I asked our waitress if we could get some napkins to clean it up. Again nothing just her attitude. Came here during lunch with a co-worker had tacos and the chimichanga fully prepared, consumed and bill paid within 25 minutes. They have hearty dinner options, (I recommend the enchilada platter and/or fajita platter) Big Party: Came here for my sister's 30th birthday lunch and they met all of our needs. 2 visits in 2 weeks, that's really all you need to know. The place is quite fun - hand painted chairs and booths take away from the otherwise plain decor. The seats are yellow, so fun! The service is fast and attentive - we were never left without water or drinks for that matter. The food - delicious! Start with the table side guacamole. A person comes in with a little cart and makes your guacamole right there and yes, they do allow you to choose the level of spicy you would like. Always a plus if you are not up for too much spicy, like me. We had the taco plates 2 times now. You get to choose from pulled pork, roasted pork, steak, lamb and chicken. Trust me, they are all delicious! Be careful though, the small container with the red sauce is deadly - so spicy, it's beyond words, really. All in all, a great place! We are always searching for a great Mexican place in the area and tried Riviera Maya. The guacamole is made right at the table and was one of the best we had. I ordered the Yucatan Platter with shrimp. The dish was smothered in grease, making the tortillas that accompanied it impossible to use. The worst part about breaking up with my ex-boyfriend from Rockaway was that I could not visit Riviera Maya as frequently. This is truly my favorite Mexican restaurant. Love the atmosphere, the staff is very nice and the service is incredible. They also have a mariachi band on some nights performing for tables throughout the restaurant and they take requests (ask for Despacito)! Everything you order will be delicious and served very quickly. I'm a big fan of anything with the carnitas. They will turn a non-pork eater into a carnitas fiend! I would give this place zero stars if I could. The margarita was tequila flavored water - and this was their "premium" margarita. We asked for no tomatoes on any of the food and it all came out with tomatoes on it. We had to send it all back. The steak fajita tasted like fake steak, the kind you'd get in a school cafeteria. No seasoning, not even grilled. They almost boiled it. Then when it came time for the check our waitress literally charged and voided my friends card like three times. The food was just okay. Their chips and salsa is pretty good but the guac was subpar. We also waited about 40 minutes for 2 entrees and a table who came in almost 20 minutes after us got their food (also 2 entrees) before we did. On top of that, the waiter we had didn't bother to check in with me about my order; I asked if I could get ground beef for my chimichangas and instead gave me all the other types of meat and did not even tell me that he was going to do that. I can't say enough about the amazing experience I had here last night. I came to meet a few colleagues and brought my 1-year old daughter with me. Usually she is amazing in restaurants but she had been cranky the last few days (teething), so I was actually pretty nervous about what to expect. Once our entrees arrived, she did not want to sit in that chair one second longer. Usually she just wants to walk around, and since we were there for an early dinner the restaurant was pretty scarce, so I let her out... but she had other plans. She wanted to hang out with all the staff! When I tell you every. single. one. of the staff was amazing with her... I mean EVERY one. They were all totally indulging her, doting on her, playing with her... this went on and off for a good 90-minutes, with her letting me sit long enough to gobble down my food before she wanted to go back to her new friends. It was SO heartwarming to see my baby so happy playing with all the servers, and to see them being so kind to her (and myself). I'm sure I don't have to tell any other parents how anxious it can be going out to eat with a baby, not wanting to disturb others' experience but also wanting to keep your baby happy... and the staff there went totally above and beyond to make sure she was happy. I truly can't thank them enough or recommend this restaurant enough!! You guys have a new customer for life :) (Side note: the food was also a-mazing! Someone please do the research and tell me about the hypnotic margarita, ok? Chips and salsa came out nearly instantly, as they should, and the salsa had a real kick!! Loved the spice but the flavors were overwhelmingly simple tomato and onion, not enough cilantro, lime and such for me. Tried the appy variety plate called Botana, $10 for quesadillas, flautas, melted cheese nacho chips and a nice dose of guacamole in the middle, excellent for 3+ peeps to split. The mex rice here was interesting and mild, had an assortment of mixed in fresh veg like carrot, peppers, beans and peas, but not particularly loaded with tomato sauce. Light and yummy. Our dinners arrived on large plates that were crazy oven hot. My tamal (tamale?) had been steamed perfectly, nicely done with a fair amount of meat filling but not sauced. The accompanying enchilada with mole sauce was equally great, stuffed with long-braised beef. Sides of refried kidney beans and pico de gallo were fine. Service on a Sunday evening dinner was a tad slow but always friendly. Our app came in about 10 min, dinners took another 30 min. Leisurely pace yet the room was a bit too noisy for proper adult conversation. Very delicious Mexican food. The Wait staff was attentive and friendly from the moment you walk in. Your water glass will never run dry which I love. I had the shredded beef chimichanga and shredded chicken enchildada combo meal served with rice and beans... Excellent value for under 10 dollars. I've never been disappointed when hitting up one of our favorite local Mexican spots. My go to seems to be the shredded beef chimichanga. I can easily devour two of these bad boys if challenged. Their queso is a little odd - has a slightly mealy texture - but the flavors really make up for any of its downfalls. The portions are always on point and the flavors are spot on. I do think their salsa could stand to be improved, but even so it's serviceable and enjoyable. The restaurant itself is easy on the eyes and decorated appropriately. I've had some hit or miss experiences with the actual service itself, but they tend to be on the busier side most nights so it seems the wait staff are constantly running from one task to the next. Alas, I'm more than happy with the overall experiences I've had here. Listen, this isn't going to be a culinary awakening here, but the food is good. read more

A few weeks ago I was at a local lacrosse tournament for my son and they had a couple of food vendors on-site. One was a great local BBQ place and one was Riviera Maya. I tried a chicken quesadilla and a minichanga with a nice verde sauce. I was shocked at how fresh and tasty the food was considering they were out on a hot day just under a tent. That tasting brought my wife and I to the main restaurant...and a really great meal. I love Mexican food...well, let's be honest, I like lots of different kinds of food, but I really do enjoy good Mexican food and Riviera Maya IS good Mexican food. We started with the Ceviche de Jaiba-a crab meat, avocado and green salsa dish that was pretty incredible. They also start you off with fresh chips and a great spicy salsa that I wish I could have brought home. My wife ordered the Fajita Arrachera...beef fajitas with a lime garlic sauce and roasted salsa. She lived it so much I wasn't allowed to touch it! I ordered the combo which included a soft taco, a burrito and a chinichanga...it was a very nice portion and absolutely delicious. What I liked most was that nothing was overly salted like a lot of places, but rather, they let the flavors of the food stand out. The side of beans did need a touch of salt, but that's just how I like my black beans. Service was great and the Margarita specials were delicious as well. My stepdaughter chose this place for her birthday dinner. When I saw it was a chain, I was skeptical but of course we went. I see other reviews complained about the service but our server could not be more attentive. As far as our dishes, we started off with the guacamole, which is made at the table with a mortar and pestle. An excellent guac. I ordered the Birra de Pollo, and was presented with a giant leg and thigh is a delicious sauce. The carrots and potatoes were slightly undercooked, but not enough to be a huge issue. I was generally pleased with this dish. My wife and stepdaughter opted for lamb dishes. My wife loved her Barbocoa De Borrego. I tried it and liked it, but found it to be a bit over salty. Still pretty good, but a little less salt would make it perfect. My stepdaughter had the Borrego Guadalajara, which she really liked (but I didn't try). As a bonus, they served an excellent IPA from the local Fort Nonesense brewery. Far from the best Mexican restaurant I've been to, but I would go back. read more

My disappointing review in June was on the Rockaway restaurant which the owner Jesus M (owner) promised to mail me a no-cost return voucher but sadly never did. After our visit to Space Farms yesterday we decided to stop at R/M on Rt206 in Branchville for another try. Let me start off by saying that we arrived at 2:45 and were seated right away because the place was mostly empty, our waiter was very pleasant, he handed us LUNCH MENUS and took our drink order right away. When he returned with the Margaritas we place our order and noticed that the glasses were heavily chipped - WHY AM I SERVED A BROKEN GLASS?? Last time it was a broken plate!! Anyway, shortly thereafter our meals arrived, and yes, they were very tasty so I was ready to forget the broken glasses (both of them), but then the check arrived. I did not understand why the cost was higher than what was listed on the Lunch-Menu I was handed. To my amazement the waiter explained that the order was submitted "a couple minutes too late and it went into dinner pricing" ... SERIOUSLY!?!?!!! I was given a LUNCH MENU but charged dinner pricing, what's going on with this place?? What a SCAM, SHAME on you JESUS.M and SHAME on RIVIERA MAYA, if I could give you a NEGATIVE STAR rating I would. So, prior to covid, this was one of our go to places to eat. We continued to order take out which was excellent. We are there in person tonight. Mixed reviews. Food was great. Waiter was great. He was funny and personable. He was accessible and very friendly. Food was not as great as usual but was acceptable. Main issues were with the cleanliness of the restaurant. Floors were sticky and there was clear debris from the prior table. Menus were disgusting! You opened them and old rice fell out and pages stuck together. So gross. Bathroom was just as bad. TP on the floor and sinks were not sanitized. Waiters wore masks but it was clear that they have relaxed their cleaning policy. read more
