Saw this on the way home a few times and always saw a lot of cars there. Decided to stop and I've it a try. Walked in with a warm greeting. Sat down and was served hot fresh chips and salsa (HOT) huge selections of food to choose from. We tried the beef combo. Hot fresh and amazing. Full bar as well to get your drink on. Very clean and well worth it.

1/18/2024 last time I was here was over a year ago. Food quality is just not consistent. My husband never complains but today it just wasn't good. Not even the Hibiscus tea was good. They seem to use canned items. The salsa tasted like canned tomatoes with added fresh onion and the beans were flavorless. When we went the restaurant was during the lull it was empty. The manager was even friendly he was just walking around with his jacket no table visit. Currently it's January the restaurant had the AC going or at least it felt like it. Now you are probably asking if I don't like it why am I there again... answer is ...it was the closest for my mother in law, and there were hopes that Food quality had improved. It's too bad. I love Mexican food. I am a foodie. I've given this restaurant 3 chances. 1st time it let me down because the food was dripping fat. 2ed time it let my husband down and he couldn't even finish his meal. 3rd time I ordered a special and it was just inedible. The appetizer was supposed to have chorizo and queso but had more onions and peppers than the main ingredients. The price for that appetizer was not appropriate. Not a fan of this restaurant.

My favorite birria tacos ever. So much flavor, I've never tasted a taco better than theirs. I drive 30 minutes just to go here, definitely a great place

We came to this place for a nice lunch date, based on their Google reviews. Soon as we entered the front door, there's a strong whiff of bathroom smell ruminating in whole area that just gave me bad feelings on what the back looks like. We were seated immediately and greeted nicely, so I just pushed through. We're from Chicago, so our standards of mexican food is quite high, additionally standards for meat and vegetarian options at Mexican restaurants. There aren't a lot of Mexican restaurants in Rockaway, and when my partner saw that they'd served fresh made guac, we were excited. Our waitress was nice and didn't take a while to accommodate our menu questions. We were given the standard complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were not too thin or too thick, quite nice. The red salsa was very good, and opened my mind to foregoing the sewage smell. Guacamole en la mesa $9.95: This isn't made table-side, but in the back. Our waitress asked us for preferred spice level and if we wanted jalapeños added to it. We opted for mild spice with jalapeños. Unfortunately this would have to be 1 star guac. The guac was room temp warm, slimy (not sure why, maybe from too much oil or something else), it lacked lime and cilantro taste. Only thing we really could taste was the sliminess of it and the heavy onions. 2 combo menu $15.95: They don't have vegetarian option except for 2 options which were vegetarian quesadillas (one with beans, the other without), so we tried to work with our waitress on customizing 2 items. Unfortunately, "customizing" really only meant 1 thing, to take out meat and replace it with beans. Our waitress seemed to have understood everything and worked with us so easily. We ordered burrito, no meat, and instead with extra beans on side (she said burrito already came with beans automatically inside). She confirmed the burrito will come with rice, guac, and beans. Our 2nd choice was enchilada with mole sauce, same thing no meat. Wow I didn't realize how much of a disaster our agreement would be with our waitress till our food arrived! Our burrito had beans, no guac, no rice. Our enchilada literally had capsicum and that's it. She gave us the black beans the combo came with and the additional pinto bean that we swapped our meat proteins for. I asked where the rice was and she said she'll get it. I confirmed if it came with it or would it be additional, and she said it comes with it no extra charge. The receipt came and we got charged $3 for a 1 measuring cup size mexican rice that we were told was no extra charge! What the! Horrible! Margarita on the rocks: it was fine. When it was time to pay, we realize we could've ordered and pod using the QR code they have on the side of the table. Before knowing his we had already requested for a physical copy of check. Weird thing is that the cost of things weren't the same on the check and the physical receipt. One had lower tax but higher subtotal cost, and other had vice versa. We won't be coming back to this place. It was a wast of $55+ for good chips and salsa and terrible everything else. Not feeling too good day after and this was our only meal all day yesterday.

Heard great things about this restaurant, so I was excited to try it! I don't feel it lived up to the hype but did have a wide selection of food and drinks. They also do pitchers of drinks which are fairly cheaper than other places. I would try it out again.

I'm so glad to have found this Mexican restaurant! I had heard about it from a couple of people and took the opportunity to go when my Mom, who loves Mexican food, was in town. The restaurant is all decked out with colorful banners and painted chairs. It gives you a feeling of being in another place. There were so many good foods on the menu and each turned out to be a great choice. My Dad got the shrimp fajitas, my Mom got a vegetarian burrito, and I got a chimichangas and tamale. We also ordered guacamole and chilaquiles to start. First off, the guacamole is made right at your table! Then they are served in a heavy stone bowl. It was about $9, but worth it for the experience. I don't think you could go wrong with any of their dishes. I would definitely come back!

One star is well deserving of this restaurant. We went here last night and I will say it was a disaster. We had a reservation at 8 but when I called at 5:15 the hostess said there was no wait for walk ins. When we arrived at 7:20, wow, I haven't seen an angry mob like that in a long time. A lot of people couldn't keep cool heads but I couldn't blame them while they waited over an hour for seating or their take out. Very poor management. Anyway, the food, garbage. Please look at the burrito supreme picture below. It is literally a wrap with French fries. What kind of self respecting Mexican place serves French fries with their burrito (aka wrap)? Tacos, they were good but I could of done better at my house STAY AWAY

App came out cold, notice the cheese has no meltage, the chorizo was also very bland and lacking any flavor.

Wiffe and I used to frequent the spot and the food was awesome. A friend of mine told me about panuchos and noticed that Riviera Maya had it on their menu online, so we went. Got to the restaurant and the panuchos were missing from the physical menu, I pointed it out to our server and requested if she can ask someone if they can still serve. Was flatly told "NO". Fine, decided to stay and order other items. Food came cold, to the point the cheese has no hint of melt. Supposed to be chorizo, which is sausage that is full of flavor, but this one was very bland. Disappointed and a waste of $$. Should've gone to Taco Bell for better "Mexican" food.

What matters is the food, and the food in El Mejicano is authentically superb. On Monday 11/10/25 I had lunch at El Mejicano, and I was deeply impressed by its food. Authentic? I've been to Mexico four times, each time to a different state, and each state has its own food. Authenticity comes from the person who cooks the food, and the food here is fantastic. I was served chips and salsa, which were quite good: the chips thick, the salsa a bit spicy and flavorful. I've had chips and salsa many other times, and the ones here were quite good. Then I ordered pozole. I had pozole in Mexico twice, once in Jalisco, once in Oaxaca: those two were different from one another (authentic?) Very good, that they were. This pozole in El Mejicano was delicious, pork in a red sauce, chockfull of hominy and pork pieces, with complex flavors. Not spicy, but genuinely tasteful. I couldn't finish it (and had it for lunch the next day). Adding to my delight, my lunch included two tostadas; I added bits of salsa because that's how I like them. Service was attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance was delightful: a modern eclectic soundtrack added a layer of pleasure. El Mejicano is a gem, and I intend to eat there again. I highly recommend it.

They pretty much put it on the customer to pay for the merchant credit fee. It wasn't as if we got a discount for using cash, it was how much everything costs anyway. Wait staff was friendly. It did take some time to get our check, probably because it was busy on a Saturday night.
