I must say I had a great experience today when I went in, I dealt with Sam T and he helped me so much. He did a great job dealing with my never-ending shoe trials and picky feet. I felt bad that I didn't end up buying anything, I just couldn't find the right fitting shoe due to pre-existing pain issues, but I want to say I appreciate their level of customer service and their whole fitment process which was really in depth. Compared to other stores, they seem to know more about the shoes and I really like how they label the shoes on the rack with the neutral/stability and the level of cushion. This is how it should be done everywhere. I took off a star because their VIP program is convoluted and too expensive. I lost track of the details when he was explaining it as I was considering buying their insoles. I think they need to compete with other stores like sports basement or REI. I don't want to pay $20 per year when other stores offer a lifetime membership for around the same cost. I think if they change that and offer the 90 day returns, that would make more sense and I'd definitely sign up for that given the great customer service I received. I still would return and am still thinking about getting those custom insoles! read more

Caveat Emptor I decided to shop local and support a store that would, in turn, offer the support and help I needed in selecting an appropriate pair of shoes as a new, inexperienced runner. First off, my initial in-store experience was quite good, I was promptly greeted at store opening and was guided through a foot scan and was given four shoe recommendations for my foot type: great so far. I also informed the associate assisting me that I was new to running, ignorant about athletic footwear and positively reliant on their expertise and advice. At checkout, I was given the option of signing up for the VIP program which I declined. I felt that given the foot scan combined with the knowledge and guidance of a specialty store would suffice to ensure that I had been guided to an appropriate selection. After all, they had checked my fit in the shoe and recommended that particular model and size. While the shoes felt good walking around the store, after my first times out jogging I realized that the shoe was not fitting well and that my toes were uncomfortably overhanging the shoe insole in a running gait. I returned to the store to seek advice on how to mitigate the issue: different lacing, different insoles, anything. I was informed by a different associate that the shoes were definitely not fitting correctly, but since I had not purchased a VIP membership there was really nothing they could do to help. Already in for $170, I was offered the opportunity to buy thinner insoles at $80. As a consumer, the VIP program should not be regarded as a rewards program but an insurance policy. If the consumer is required to buy a policy against fit misguidance, there is no incentive to support a local brick and mortar. After the foot scans and all, I may as well have gone to Zappos. read more

This is the best store to buy shoes, and other running workout gear. I was recently diagnosed with a mild form of osteoarthritis in my foot and needed new shoes. I had gone to another Bay Area store and purchased a pair of shoes which are supposed to be good for this- but after wearing them for 4 days, I am returning them. I wanted to purchase shoes from a store that specializes in running gear and fit. I walked in and was warmly greeted by Freddy. First he asked me if I had been here before (no) and he then explained in detail the process for first getting properly measured and fitted. This was super helpful and proved informative as we decided what shoes might work best. Freddy explained how the shoes were displayed, the different levels of cushioning, and kept bringing out shoes for me to try on. I decided on 2 pairs of Brooks, also purchased customized orthotics and socks. I had signed up for their newsletter and also their VIP program, which offers some great perks, including discounts. I'm a beginning runner and decided to get a pair of running shoes, instead of cross trainers. Robby helped me with gait analysis and find a pair that was comfortable for me. He sanitized all the equipment, the bench, and the treadmill before I touched it. He also provided a pair of clean socks. I was a bit intimidated by the store and the equipment, but he was very nice and warm and even suggested some local scenic places to run. I have planter fasciitis and needed some good tennis shoes to walk around Disneyland and Universal Studios in a couple weeks. I have ordered many pairs of shoes on the internet with arch support but nothing has been great. I have small feet - womens size 5, which makes it difficult to find shoes in the first place. Hannah helped me and she was amazing! I found out from the tests that I have low arches and at different levels. The minute I stepped onto the custom made insoles my feet felt better! Turns out I needed a kids size 4.5 and the had a few to choose from, trying each one on to pick the one that fit and felt the best! She was amazing from every aspect of customer service. Never once did I feel pressured and never once did I feel like a number. Zero stars if I could. I, too, was not aware I was wearing an invisible cloak. First time visiting this location in my 10+ years as a RR member. The store is a complete mess. Shoes everywhere on the floor and benches. Stood in the shoe section for 15+ minutes, noticed two staff helping other customers and a total of FOUR employees walking past. Not a single "hello... we'll be with you as soon as possible" or "hi let me add your name to the waitlist". Nothing. Even walked up to a staff and asked to be put in the waitlist. The dude literally turned around, walked away to talk to another customer and then another staff. I asked the customer sitting next to us how long they've been waiting and she said "an infinity". I understand it was busy and waiting is inevitable. However, the lack of customer service and being ignored is not something I'd choose to tolerate. So instead of waiting an infinity I decided to drive the extra 30 minutes to Concord and I'm so glad I did. read more

I went to Road Runner last night to purchase running sneakers. I did not need help trying them on as I have been wearing the same Brooks style for a number of years as they are the best for my body. I had to ask someone to help me as I was being ignored while waiting for someone to get my size. After getting my shoes, I was ignored for about ten minutes before I had to go to associate to ask for someone to ring me up for my purchase. I had to wait another ten minutes for someone to come from the back (somewhere in the store) so I could purchase the sneakers. That person proceeded to try and sell me the VIP membership and after I said no, they continued to ask me. Worst sales experience ever. I will not be back here to purchase anything. It's too bad, because the Road Runner Sports in Seattle is MUCH BETTER (i moved from Seattle to Oakland). read more

So I'm not sure how to feel about this place. First of all, no one helped us as we were holding a couple of shoes that we wanted to try on. We saw the employees walking around assisting others as we waited patiently for some assistance. Finally, we decided to approach an employee and ask him if they had these shoes in my size. He immediately said with a matter of fact attitude, "No, we don't have those. Ultra boosts are popular shoes, you know." Um...yeah, I think that is pretty well known...thanks for your unwanted input. I happened to grab the men's shoe as I did not see the women's on the wall. He said there was only size 13 available. Alright...so I continued to look around the store and found the same shoe in a women's version sitting on top of one of the displays not against the wall. The shoe happened to be in my size. So I went up to the same guy and asked him if he had those available...even if they only had the display. He said, "Oh yeah, we have those." Um...he couldn't have recommended those earlier? He never came back. Never asked how they fit. Never relayed the same service as the employees were giving other customers. I mean, cmon now...these are $200 shoes! Even with the terrible service, I decided to go ahead and purchase them. At the register, the guy at the counter tried to sell us their VIP membership. I saw this online and thought about purchasing it anyway...so I said sure. I left the store wondering why my total came out higher than I thought it would be. I checked the receipt and found that he charged me over $20 for the membership. What??? On their website, it's $1.99!!! What kind of business is this? So I went back questioning him about this. He said that we should've mentioned the website price and didn't know if he could refund me the difference anymore. Seriously? He spoke to his manager and came back with an attitude...said it was fine to refund the difference. Ugh. I hate shopping. Seriously...I normally buy my ultra boosts online but decided to check out roadrunner as I originally heard good things about them. What a mistake. Crappy service. Snarky attitudes. I have the perfect shoes!!! Jason was beyond amazing. It was my first time to any road runner location and Jason warmly greeted me with a smile. He took me through some tests to see where the pressure points were in both my feet. He even custom made me a pair of insoles that make it seem like I'm walking on cloud 9. I even bought a $19 membership that allows me to run anywhere with the shoes (track, trail, gym, wherever) and if I do not like the fit I can return them and get a different pair within 90 days of the purchase. You also get $20 off you first pair of shoes, so it pays for itself! I'm excited to take these new asics out for a run. So happy I made the trip out to Berkeley. I am a big fan of this store and their service, and have been supporting them for years. There are a lot of options for shoes, in stores and online, but I've supported this place because they are a local small(ish) business with great employees. However, the last two times I have shopped there it's been the same experience - the math on my receipt doesn't add up. As a member of their (paid) rewards program, I earn rewards. However, when I want to use those rewards, the price of the shoes go up. Both times, the sales person could not explain why 2+2 doesn't equal 4, both times the manager had to come and explain it to both of us, and both times, I left not feeling good about my purchase. Last time, i felt like the manager was talking down to me because I asked. I have been studying the receipt, and still can't make sense of it. It's not about the money - I shop here because I can afford their prices, it's about the principal. Most rewards programs are free, you have to pay to join Road Runner's, but shoes cost more if you want to use rewards. For reference, I oversee a market of 83 mid-size retail businesses, including P&L management... I should be able to decipher a store receipt. read more

I had to go into the store because I ordered my custom insoles online where they save your 3D images. The first picture is what I received and took over 2 weeks to get them. I had called customer service and they were not helpful at all and was trying to tell me that maybe my feet were that shape and I was unaware and they could not help me and I would need to go to a store even though you can only buy the reordered insoles online... went to the Berkeley location and Jennifer helped me out and was very sweet and you can see what she made was nothing close to what received online. read more

My husband went there to find a walking shoe that would decrease the pain in his foot from plantar fasciitis. He also overpronates. Sam was extremely helpful. He looked at my husband's gait making notes of any imbalances. Sam brought out 4 shoes and explained how they worked and also answered all our questions. I started running 5ks this year and a dear friend told me about this place! She explained the process and I was super stoked to try it out. I walked in the store and someone communicated with me right away that her manager Robbie would be out to help me quickly! I waited about 2 Minutes which was great to give me some time to read about their programs and how everything works. Robbie came out and greeted me with a really upbeat, cool, chill guy attitude which made me feel comfortable right away! I said my friend told me about you guys and I want to get my feet tested and he was like "great let's get started!" Test began, he communicated exactly what I was supposed to do. I never felt like "oh shit I don't know what I'm doing!" He shared my results and heated up my shoe inserts right away. I also found out that I've been wearing the wrong size shoes my whole life.
