A well-curated charity shop in an upscale neighborhood, supporting a cause close to my heart. Since…read moreit opened I've invested in a some nice vintage pieces priced somewhere between thrift stores and Etsy. Something that happened on my last visit left me unsettled. It was a Sunday, and the manager I usually have a nice chat with wasn't there. I browsed around and found a good older Lands End barn jacket for $55. Unfortunately it was missing one of its logo buttons in the back flap, making the $55 seem kind of high. I took it to the counter to discuss. The staff member present that day pointed to the "no negotiations" sign next to the counter, and said that damaged goods like the coat would have been put in the garbage. I begged to buy it for $55 just to rescue the poor thing, just like I did with my shelter dog. Seriously brought up the stories of the Great Depression when big corporate farms dumped good produce and milk into the ground, rather than feed the hungry, in a move to fix pricing. Also, my 81 year old mum resigned from her volunteer position at a local church-run charity shop because they were throwing away perfectly good vintage clothing just because of some small flaw. Truly, if the manager of this shop wants to reassure me that this ISN'T store policy, it would make me more comfortable to come back and shop again.

Help fund a much-needed new building for Berkeley Humane (5/5 Green Stars)…read moreIn early November, the Berkeley Humane opened a second thrift store - right here in the Elmwood! I was already a fan of the Solano store - I think it's one of the nicest thrift shops in Berkeley. This branch is smaller but it's really focused on the nicest things, arranged beautifully. If you've never wandered into a thrift store and have reservations about going in, then start right here. Many items are brand new, with tags still attached, and I think the prices are reasonable, considering this. A large portion of the clothes are women's (although that hasn't stopped me shopping for a winter jacket) but there is also a small men's section behind the changing room. Check out the cool collection of Christmas ornaments, right now! 100% of proceeds benefit the Berkeley Humane nonprofit - particularly to help fund a new building that they need after a fire in 2010 destroyed a large part of their building on 9th and Carlton. As you may know, back in the 1970s, the BH made a commitment that no healthy or treatable shelter animals in the Society's care would be euthanized. It's amazing that the BH got started almost 120 years ago - in 1905, the Berkeley branch of the SPCA was set up with a mission to improve conditions at the "pound" (which were reportedly not good at the time). The current facility on 9th and Carlton was acquired all the way back in 1933. The new building will be named the Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC), and will include a veterinary medical hospital and adoption center and will include more services for people with pets who might be in need of a little extra support. It will feature significantly enlarged space for cat adoptions, including several "catios" that will provide felines with natural light and fresh air. Berkeley Humane is a private non-profit organization that does not receive government funding, so community support is essential to its mission. I'm giving the Berkeley Humane Thrift shop 5/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact. This takes very little explaining. Buying clothes and other items from thrift shops is one of the best ways to reduce your environmental footprint and improve your social impact. You are avoiding the production of new materials, with all problems of the fast-fashion-driven textile industry. At the same time you are supporting a nonprofit that has taken care of local neglected or abandoned animals for more than a century. This year, Berkeley Humane will have over $400,000 in expenses to medically prepare over 1,000 animals for adoption. Your support will save lives.

As a…read morepersonal buyer for multiple clients for decades, I've made it a priority to trade, buy and sell at each Crossroad store in the San Francisco Bay Area. After visting the City, East Bay and Southern CA stores, I am still partial and perhaps biased about the new College Avenue store. It is still my favorite Go-To high-end resale store, shopping there when it was across the street over 15-20 years ago. Other reviewers say that the new location has improved, brighter natural lighting with more open visual space and high ceilings for placement of high-end pieces. Their selection is better and consistently checked and maintained. High-end or designer pieces are encased or behind sales counter, allowing more room to move with better access to see, touch and try-on clothing. The dressing rooms are clean, well lit and accessible. The holding area for sellers waiting to sell might get cramped on a weekend and could use more staging or shelf area. It's nice to shop while you wait and not have to sit and watch your bags. Good training and the way its staff treats each customer makes all the difference. Long-time management, Jason, Dikki, Nola Mei, Emily and Diana are stellar and hire and train new employees with a discerning inclusive selection process of open-minded, friendly, and respectful staff. A huge shout out to Mack, Cairo, Rachel and Brooklyne and do excuse me if I've forgotten anyone. When asked if they enjoy working at Crossroads, they had positive attitudes and responses. Their buyers curate pieces carefully, and choose on what will sell for the season and location. They treat their customers with respect and are candid about their selections. I no longer feel slighted if they don't take an expensive item I thought would sell. My favorite brands traded and bought here are Vince, James Perse, APC, Armani, ATM, Theory, Patagonia, Lululemon, Rag and Bone, Acne, Eileen Fisher, A Piece Apart, Levis and more. The men's selections have improved and increased offering multiple top brands. I've bought Marni, Coach, Gavriel Mansur, YSL, and Longchamp purses and backpacks, along with unisex ArcTeryx, Patagonia and Northface backpacks and totes. Their shoes and boots like Prada, Aquatalia, Adidas, Todd's, Pedro Garcia etc., are great and one can still consign top shelf designer pieces. The trendy marks, Madewell, Frame, L'Agence, AGolde, Levis, Dickies and unique streetwear brands are abundant and offer affordable, high-end sunglasses, wallets and jewelry. Buying, selling or trading gently-used, pre-loved pieces that someone bought retail at 300-400% markup, some brand new with tags still attached - and you may just find your hidden gem here. One last note: No one paid me for this review and it is not A.I. rendered or generated.

Did my research, looked what companies were around in the Bay Area, and came across Ben. The most key thing that worked between us is that Ben will go to your house to fit you up AND he will deliver the suit to you as well. Other suit companies were consistently in SF, San Jose, etc. This was a problem for me because I'm from Vallejo and I didn't want to have to cross 2 bridges. I couldn't imagine planning a wedding and having to drive back and forth to get fitted for a suit with the consideration of my work schedule as well. But not only did his delivery system work perfect for me, he was overall just a super chill guy. Nothing awkward, it's just like I was talking to my close friends. He walked me through the whole process seamlessly and answered all my questions with reliable answers. He also gave me his best recommendations for certain details of my suit. I appreciate that. Prices were super solid for my budget too. Didn't have to break the bank and I still got top tier quality from my suit. My expectations were surely met. Thanks for everything Ben! Will for sure come back for another suit. (I'll upload some pics of my suit once our wedding day has been completed )

Ben comes fully prepared with everything he needs to guide you through the process and understand what you can need. He was really fun to work with and genuinely wanted to ensure I would be happy wearing the suit. He also included my fiancé during the process so she could give input and support me on the decision (I don't usually wear suits). Additional appointments were made to once the suit and vest were ready for adjustments. I then picked it up later at his Berkeley when it was all done. I wore the suit for 2 wedding ceremonies and multiple photo shoots. This is one of the best purchases I've made and I would highly recommend Ben to anyone seeking a custom suit. Thank you Ben!

Then more people came in and were helped, so we waited. And more, so we waited. When we asked how much longer it would be until we were helped, we were given a seat at a table to review suit/tuxedo offerings. Another customer tried to speak up for us and let her know we were waiting. More people came in and were helped, and we waited. We asked a couple more times when we would be helped. After an hour of waiting, we left. I think I counted 15 groups that came in while we waited - all young women getting alterations done and one young man ordering accessories. My son uses a wheelchair and we were there to rent a full tux. I don't know why we weren't helped, but it's hard not to believe the neglect was due to his multiple disabilities. This was a very disappointing and disheartening experience. I'm glad so many people have had great experiences, but if you're disabled I would recommend going somewhere else. And maybe if you're able-bodied, please consider supporting other businesses that don't discriminate. The owner did allow my son to use the bathroom while we waited, which we really appreciated. Outside of that, it was a pretty bad experience.
