Roast & Toast has been one of the cafes I've been meaning to visit, but didn't get the chance to until today. How I regret not making my trip earlier - this place is a literal gem! With a beautiful interior, ample and comfortable seating plus reliable WiFi, this place is perfect for all customers alike. At first I only ordered the Spanish Latte, but while waiting for my order, I asked about a dessert they had on display. Mr. Fadi the barista was very kind to introduce and introduce to me the dessert and knafeh, even going as far as to make a sample on the spot! It was very delicious, so I knew I had to place a second order for it as well. This was the Strawberry Dubai, and wow -- believe when I tell you, it was love at first bite. Perfectly ripe and juicy strawberries drizzled with Dubai chocolate, topped off with shredded knafeh and crunchy pistachio, all came together to make a tasty and balanced treat. Because they were so generous with the portion, I did have to take it home to enjoy all of it, but loved it! Of course, not to forget about the Spanish Latte: elegant in appearance and even more delectable in taste! It's like a warm hug in a cup -- a perfect beverage for cold and cloudy days. People looking for something sweet, milky, and fluffy will enjoy this, but if this isn't you, there are stronger options on the menu (or you can ask for another shot of espresso too). This was my first time visiting but I will definitely be coming back! The ambiance was great, the food was amazing, and had really good portion to cost ratio. And the workers were all kind and gave really good service to us during our visit. I ordered the Roast N Toast Special sandwich on dutch crunch bread and it was to DIE for. If you love a tart/tangy flavor profile, this is the one for you! I also got the Dubai Chocolate Strawberries (it was my first time ever trying them), and now I fully understand the hype. Really nice textures and flavor within each bite from the sweet and tart strawberry to the milk chocolate and pistachio butter, whilst also having a good crunch/crisp factor due to the pistachios and kataifi(phyllo pastry dough). I also ordered a Cardamom Cold Brew, it was pretty much a standard cold brew but I can't complain lol. We came here to try the Arabic booza. They were out of the rose cardamom flavor. My husband tried the chocolate one and it was really good. I tried the mastic with rose petal and kataifi toppings. I liked the chocolate one better personally. The flavors are not very sweet and I liked that! My kids got some sorbet and liked it as well. The service was prompt and we sat outside. I specifically went out of my way for this cafe for the knafeh and I was not disappointed. It rivaled when I've been served knafeh fresh off a giant griddle being made by a grandma. So delicious and made fresh, even to go had the best presentation. The vibe of the cafe was also impeccable. I wish I had more work to do that was suitable to just hanging out in a coffee shop because I'd absolutely spend hours in Roast & Toast. From the beautiful decor to the vibrant energy, a friendly staff and plenty of natural light it's an amazing spot that I'd recommend for studying, chatting, and working out of office. It has some condensed milk, definitely not overly sweet but wonderful and creamy. We ordered 3 sandwiches, all of which came with a fresh side salad and enough food for two meals! Great portion sizes here. Roast N Toast Special: This is a huge sandwich unlike any other. Pomegranate balsamic glaze, pistachio, sundried tomatoes, pesto, creamy burrata.... It's packed with flavor and fun textures, yet works seamlessly. My friend and I both agreed this is one of the best, if not THE best, sandwich we've ever had. The Chicken Supreme: a twist on a deli classic. Fresh, crunchy, and soft bread. The grilled chicken is marinated with Palestinian thyme and olive oil, it's so succulent. The house sauce and garlic sauce combination tie everything together, it's saucy and drippy but in the best way possible. Tuscan Chicken: this is one of the best chicken mozz pesto sandwiches I've everrrr had. Soft and crunchy whole wheat roll which is a bit sweet, and filled with freshness and flavor. The grape balsamic is a standout!!!! And the grilled peppers complement perfectly. We tried the Ice & Gold Knafeh for a light dessert which was an experience- the presentation is beautiful. So many different textures and flavors, not toooo sweet, and the pistachio dusting across everything was perfect. The ice cream was silky smooth, not icy at all! I'm so glad I stumbled across this cafe. Beautiful interior, wonderful ambiance, extremely friendly workers and owners- come support this small Palestinian-owned business! We tried three sandwiches- the Tuscan chicken, chicken supreme, and roast and toast special, and all were AMAZING. Hands down some of the best sandwiches I've ever had! The bread is fresh, and the flavors were delicious. The sun-dried tomatoes, paired with the unique balsamic glazes (grape and pomegranate), and Palestinian spices on the sandwiches were life-changing. The portions are fantastic as well- one sandwich is easily enough for two meals! The garlic sauce on the chicken supreme is phenomenal. The Spanish lattes are beautifully decorated and delicious as well. Not too sweet! We also tried the knafeh with ice cream, which was unique and fun. Delicious with the pistachios! I really like this place. First of all they have pretty good seating indoors and outside. Even though it's street parking I usually find a spot near by. I also really enjoy the color scheme of the place it seems clean and well put together with thought and care. I think the little ice cream trolli adds to the charm forsure. I really enjoyed my cappuccino and I always get the strawberry Dubai chocolate cup & add bananas. These are the only thing I've tried from the menu but someone at the ice cream cart was nice enough to let me try some ice cream. Here's why I'm writing the review tho- the staff here is so kind. I've been here a few times and I always feel very cared for like I'm with my family. Today I watched the staff carry, open chair, and take off backpack of a seeing impaired person with their dog. The way the staff helped him restored my faith in humanity. I'm studying nursing here and seeing that behavior really brightened my day. I hope they continue to help others. I've been here only a few times before, but each time I was greeted with amazing service! The space is large and bright, and there is a ton of seating. They close later than most other cafes in Berkeley, which is a plus if you need to get work done. There also seem to be less undergrads as most of the other customers I've seen are grad students or Berkeley residents. The bathroom is really clean! Today I got an Iced Spanish Latte, which is perfect for someone who isn't a fan of super dark, bitter coffee. I'm by no means a coffee connoisseur, but I can tell they use quality ingredients. This drink is very light and creamy -- one thing I will note is that they tend to add a drizzle of chocolate syrup inside the cup when you order iced drinks, so I would recommend asking them to leave that out if that's not your thing. The same man takes my order and makes my drink each time I've gone, and he's always super attentive and helpful. Today, he gave me some napkins to wrap around my cup as he warned me it was quite cold. I would recommend this cafe to anyone, especially if you are really into quality coffee! read more

The only complaint I could have is the tables being super close together so it's awkward to walk through when you need to get up and around but otherwise everything else is great. We stumbled upon this spot after dinner as we walked back to our car. The cart at the window drew us in and watched others sample so we were curious. The rose cardamom tasted yummy, and not too sweet for an ice cream base, but I went for the mastic tree booze ice cream with pistachio topping which is more of a vanilla flavor. I was very intrigued by the stringy thick texture of the "ice cream". Nothing I've ever tried before. The pistachio went so perfectly with it. A beautiful Palestinian owned cafe. Everyone here is extremely kind and the food and coffee was really good. We got a hot vanilla latte and a hot pistachio latte both were amazing. I also got a bagel with cream cheese, egg, and zaatar (my favorite). There is lots of seating and outlets available to charge. Also free wifi once you purchase something and a restroom. I am always looking for new Middle Eastern businesses to support being Lebanese and Armenian myself, and this one is definitely near the top of my list. Free Palestine always. read more

Jeez, this place is amazing. First, another aside about yulp. Sorry, my "yelp" always autocorrects to "yulp." I have my go to's but still use yelp when venturing anywhere outside the norm. Rarely do I have time on this outside-the-norm trips to write, but I love to scroll and find great things up and down CA as well local. That said, I haven't searched for Cafe + open at 8 am + Sort by rating + free wifi in many years. I was eager, knowing that there must be new and improved amazing places around here. And today, Roast & Toast is the perfect option. (Who needs AI? But, that's another aside...) Wow, this place is amazing. First, my drink: a homemade mint lemonade that will crush your soul ... with delight. It's not too sweet, but not at all astringent, with a ton of flavor. And that fresh mint is done in a way that is so appetizing, delicate yet forward, dreamy and inviting. If you are a lemonade connoisseur then you certainly must try this. It touches on that unquantifiable perfection paradox - the highest quality of something, maybe 3 standard deviations about average, is so good that you can't accurately rank their peers; instead you can note differences and appreciate them personally, yet saying that one is above the other is too suspect to be accurate. At that level, if you can't acknowledge that personal preference is much more of an influence in a rating, then you are showing that your aren't qualified to actually be making an observation on this level of quality. I've written about this today, but I don't have a good name for this paradox. (I'm also not great at describing it.) Back to Roast & Toast, it's great for studying, it's great for hanging with friends, it's great for meet-ups. It's food looks legit! I can't wait to try this stuff. It's desserts look even legiter (probably 'more legit' would be a better descriptor) with homemade ice cream and confections built upon them. Man, I love finding a place and rating them based on one small item on their menu, certainly not in the top ten things that they are known or rated for, and finding that that specific lemonade is actually thoughtfully crafted and perfectly executed. I have been here many times since it first opened, usually getting a latte or a cortado and a croissant. My lattes and cortados have always tasted fresh and strong, along with nice latte art lol. To eat, I usually get the Turkey Croissant, which tastes juicy and filling while being affordably priced. You can order with the cashiers, who are friendly and nice, or order through the self-service kiosk on the counter. I have ordered through both, depending on whether there is a cashier there (or how busy that are). Not only is the coffee and food great, but the space is amazing as well. When it first opened, the dark teal painted walls with matching chairs mixed with wooden tables and beams really stood out. The cafe is nice and spacious, with it being easy to walk through despite there being plenty of tables and chairs. And the chairs have a fabric on them, so they're really comfortable to sit on. Honestly, probably the cafe with the best chairs in Berkeley. I have never stayed here too long to work/study, so not sure how fast their wifi is or if there are a lot of plugs for charging. But I see plenty of students and professionals here with their laptops all the time, so the wifi is probably decent. I will keep coming back here to get my caffeine boost.
