I've been here twice, so I'm surprised I haven't posted a review yet. The food is really good! Parking in the area can be tough, but I've lucked out with finding a spot across the street both times, though I did have to drive around a bit on my first visit. I like that they have a patio area, but it's been full each time I've been, so I haven't had a chance to sit outside. The staff is kind, though they tend to be a bit slow when taking orders at the front. I guess it's nice that they don't rush things, but it can be a bit frustrating when the line is long and they're chatting with each person ordering, which feels like forever. However, once you sit down, the food is delivered quickly. During my first visit, I ordered the Lobster Roll with fries, a donut to-go, and we shared an order of Fried Mozzarella Sticks. The donut was very mild; I've had way better vegan donuts, so I wouldn't get one again. I thought the lobster roll was good, but not great. It did not remind me of a lobster roll at all and was too acidic in my opinion, so I wouldn't get that again either. I loved the mozzarella sticks, though. As a vegan, that typically dislikes vegan cheese, they were a hit. My non-vegan best friend loved them too! During my second visit, I ordered a Jalapeño Business sandwich with potato salad, rocky road to-go, and mozzarella sticks to share since I loved them so much the first time. My friend got a Buffalo Ranch Fried Chicken sandwich, and we decided to swap halves to try more things. I love spicy food, so if I had to choose a favorite, I'd pick my sandwich over hers, but both sandwiches were fantastic! The potato salad was good, but kind of bland for my taste. The rocky road was so yummy, and like last time, the mozzarella sticks did not disappoint. I love supporting fully vegan restaurants and will definitely go back to try more items on the menu. I've been here a few times because I love that it's a classic deli-style lunch spot where I can order anything on the menu even though I don't eat meat. That said, this is really a place you bring your meat-eating friends who love the taste of meat -- they somehow magically make non-meat taste like meat. I've enjoyed the sandwiches when ordering fresh, but on my most recent visit I was alone and grabbed a take-and-go roast beef and cheddar. Unfortunately, it was soggy and dry at the same time -- soggy bread, dry protein, and mostly just a mustard flavor. I couldn't finish it. Such a fun little vegan deli with a cute outdoor back patio. I love grabbing sandwiches here with friends and dining al fresco. The BLAT is delicious and so is the squash ricotta sandwich. I swear, I used to have the very first review for The Butchers Son, right when they opened so long ago... Oh well. That seems to be gone, but my love for this place is not. They've grown and adapted and changed over the years, expanding to a larger space across the street from their original location, with a broader menu to match. The food has only gotten better, if that's possible, hitting that sweet spot between comfort food, junk food, and even health food if you go for the right entrees. Personally, I'm forever a fan of the Something Healthy Salad, made slightly less healthy with the addition of fried chicken. It just has everything going on; fresh veggies, salty cheese, crispy and rich protein, buttery avocado, hearty quinoa, and flavorful dressing. It never gets old. This is the ideal place to take skeptical omnivores. The sandwiches would make an old school delicatessen proud. Especially if you can save room for dessert, their cheesecakes and cannolis could win over the pickiest eaters. So refreshing to find unique deli inspired vegan options. The panko crusted shrimp appetizer was yummy, as was the fried chicken sandwich and lobster roll. The imitation chicken was the most convincing, followed by the shrimp, then the lobster last, in my opinion. They were all tasty regardless. Visited on a Wednesday around 4:30pm and the restaurant wasn't too busy yet! Limited indoors seating. They even sell vegan cheeses, desserts, meats, and drinks as well. Everything looked delicious so it took me a bit to decide, and I ended up ordering the Jalapeño Business with a pickle to go and the sandwich was ready within 10 minutes. Jalapeño Business (4.5/5): Delicious! Good portion size. I love a saucy sandwich so the sriracha mayo was a great touch. The "steak" and "bacon" were flavorful. There were jalapeños, but for me personally, the sandwich could have been a little spicier, but I still really enjoyed the meal. I really appreciate vegan restaurants like Butchers Son. This is my absolute favorite vegan spot in the entire bay area!! My go to is the temple Caesar salad! I've tried multiple of their dishes, but my favorite still comes out to be the salad. I also love to try their rotation of desserts here which is really good. Donut definitely taste vegan and a little bit more bread than usual but it is vegan so I get it. I also love getting the dressings like the ranch sauce, and Caesar dressing here. I usually come and order it to go and they make it pretty fast. I call in advance and pick it up. Ah, I do appreciate that this is a dedicated vegan restaurant, but for us, it just was miss. My aunt (not vegan/plant-based) didn't enjoy the fried "chicken" that she order on her Caesar salad. I tasted it and understood why, it had that weird , spongy, seitan texture. The salad alone is good because their dressing is excellent. I ordered the mozzarella sticks and Jalapeños Business. The inside of the mozzarella sticks didn't give the cheesy pull that I've found at some other spots, it was more cakey. The marinara and breading was tasty, but I did not care for the cashew cheese's texture. The flavor of the Jalapeño Business was good, but the texture was a miss for me. The highlight of the meal, was the pickle; they have some of the best pickles. For the two of us, we were definitely disappointed with the meal. Love this place! This is maybe my fourth or fifth time going to The Butcher's Son, and each dish I try leaves me feeling nice and satisfied. This time, it was a hit with my mom, who got the killer BLAT with some Parmesan garlic fries. The sandwich was packed with ingredients that all brought out the ultimate flavor and experience. The fries were also a light, airy, and addictive addition to the meal. Their jackstreet boyz sandwich was an interesting combination of flavors, but the pickled cabbage and sriracha mayo stole the show. I'd like to try it on sourdough bread next time though. They have been around for 10 years now and are still making great vegan food. The lobster roll made from mushrooms and served with seasoned fries is my current favorite. The pulled pock sandwich is also very tasty. The outdoor rose garden is the perfect spot to enjoy a meal. After eating we like to buy some cheeses, egg and chicken salads, pulled pork, pesto sauce and frittata to take home. The rocky road bar is always a delicious chocolaty treat for dessert. We had a habit of trying out different restaurants together, and this was one of her picks. We arrived to find a medium length line and lots of people dining at the restaurant. As we were waiting in line and nearing the counter, I noticed a Lorde song was playing, "A World Alone". We placed our orders and waited less time for our items, we ordered to-go, than we did in line. When we got our food we decided to walk to campus and eat on one of the grass lawns. Our meals were vegan and neither of us had problems with the proteins we selected. I went with a steak and eggs sandwich that was served open-faced, so I could eat it with fork and knife. Checked out The Butcher's Son after having heard about it and us being in the area for Bizerkeley Food Fest. We escaped the lines to find a good meal and they absolutely did not disappoint. Their sandwich selection here was incredibly extensive that it made it hard to choose. I ultimately with their Fried Chicken Caesar with Garlic Fries ($20) and had a humongous, crispy plant-based chicken sandwich with all the salad's fixings you could ask for. The sandwich was so big that I ended up saving 1/3 of it for dinner and I sit here still feeling pretty full. My friend's also enjoyed their two sandwiches - one got the BLAT and another a Chicken Bagel Sandwich. Oh, and the free coffee and water stations were both nice touches to include. I ordered two sandwiches, both with fries. Mine, meat with cheese, was nothing extraordinary and very salty. There's no justifying the price. Two meals and one drink was slightly over fifty dollars. You'd think they charge enough to pay a living wage, but you'll see that this establishment accepts tips. For ringing someone up. TIPS! FOR TAKING AN ORDER. I feel a bit embarrassed to admit that I had no idea this place was fully vegan! I went for brunch on a Sunday and it was a bit crowded. It is self seating and you order at the front. I was delighted to see that they offered free coffee and water at a table near us. Everything was delicious! The only thing I probably would not order again are the mozzarella sticks. They have no cheese pull at all and the flavor was a bit peculiar for my taste (and a whopping $15). However, I was obsessed with the wild blueberry hemp milk pancakes!! They were so fluffy and delicious-- not overly sweet at all. My partner also ordered the fried chicken sandwich and it was so so good. Parking around this area is scarce too, so plan ahead. Came back to the Butchers son with my roommate during Saturday Brunch. They had the patio open so which there were a lot of people, the store was not crowded and it was easy to find a seat. So you order before you sit (which I prefer) and then grab your own water/coffee (which is included in your meal and comes with oat, soy milk, or no milk). Every thing aside from bringing out the food is pretty self serve. We went for the Philly style steak sandwich and the egg and steak hoagie. Both seem to use something like Seitan (but I'm not sure) for their meat. The portions of these two were huge and the one issue I have is that you get full super fast but also hungry really fast. Doesn't seem like enough protein to keep you satiated for long. Well good thing the portions are large so you can save for later. I think the chopped cheese was better than the egg and steak because of the lettuce and tomato adding a nice crunch/freshness (in my opinion that could add some more). It also has a very creamy sauce. The tofu scramble on the egg and steak was ok but not my favorite. It didn't stay in the sandwich and was quite messy but overall not too bad flavor wise. I'm not sure if it's supply issues or just changes in management but it's gone downhill since reopening after COVID. I still frequent it and I get what I need, but it use to be a real cravings spot before and now it's more of a once in a while when I'm around type of thing. There are several tables inside and outside. As well as a pastry case and items for grab-and-go. We chose to dine inside and our food was brought to us swiftly. Water and other items are self-serve. I was thrilled to finally get my hands on foods that I no longer eat, but now can since it's made vegan! One Killer BLTA and Garlic Fries for me and a Buffalo Fried Chicken and Fried Mozzarella for my friend. First off, portions are gigantic and quite filling, it can get messy too. I loved the sandwich as it was hearty, creamy, and fresh. My friend enjoyed hers and we both agreed we'd come back. Vegans and non-vegans can rejoice at this alternative and equally delicious deli. If you're plant-based, this is a great spot for a twist on traditional sandwiches. For those who aren't vegan, textures and flavors may not be the same but are still enjoyable. Increasing my rating to 4 stars. Went back a few months ago and had lunch which was really good. The sandwiches are pretty solid. I wouldn't do take out from them just given the amount of sog you're likely to encounter from the plant based items being steamed in their to-go containers. I will say they are on the saltier end of things and their pricing is not competitive with some other places. The shareable fries were pretty expensive for what you got. I think I paid around 50 bucks for 3 people, which is not a bargain by any means. I would come back but occasionally, definitely not regularly. read more
