Osaka can be very hit or miss. My girlfriend and I have been here when the sushi has been fresh, well put together and very tasty and the service was impeccable. Yet, we have now been there several times when the fish has obviously gone bad. We once brought this to or server attention and she tried to convince us that nothing was wrong and was very rude. Although we have had a couple of nice experiences here, we will not be returning anymore. Arrived without a reservation on a Saturday night (ill-advised) with 3 people in our party and the hostess was super nice and got us a table within 5 minutes. Our waitress wasn't very attentive but our chef was awesome! The waitress didn't return after she brought our drinks but the chef was super talented and gave us a good show with our food (watch out for the flying zucchini!). The food was very good and they had a lot of hibachi options. I liked that you could combine chicken, steak, and seafood options and that there wasn't much difference in price. You will not leave hungry! They give generous portions of delicious food. The hibachi is great as is the pina colada! I like that they still give ginger and teriyaki as dipping sauces and not that weird, sweet yum-yum sauce some other places do. This is a very popular place to celebrate, so make sure to call ahead if you have a group, especially if you want hibachi. We had dinner in Osaka while in Scranton, being familiar with Japanese cuisine and liking sashimi mostly we sat at the sushi bar in order to be able to check the freshest selections. My husband who speaks a bit of Japanese tried to start a conversation with the sushi chefs behind the counter but they turned out to be Chinese!!! We did not take long to select our sashimi since the selection was not extensive! The sashimi we ordered was fresh and presented nicely!! I went to Osaka on a Monday night for a family members birthday dinner. I have to say food wise, staff was all great, yes they are a bit slow on refilling drinks. The waitress and other staff members constantly asked if we were happy with everything and we were. As soon as as my group and I walked in, the staff was unfriendly. The woman behind the bar told everyone who walked in "It is a 40 minute wait or bye-bye." A party that made a reservation for 30 minutes prior was told that their reservation had been lost and were told to leave. Fortunately, we made a reservation but still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. Once we did sit, another 20 minutes passed before drink orders were taken. The only saving grace of this restaurant was the waitress. If I hadn't been dining with a group, I would have walked out 5 minutes after being there. I thought that Scranton would have some nicer restaurants versus some of the smaller towns in the general area as there aren't that many large cities in Eastern or Northeast Pennsylvania to begin with. This is about what you'd expect from any Benihana or Kyoto (Clarks Summit) hibachi style Japanese. The waiter cooks in front of you, the food is tasty and the service is good. This place has recently reopened from renovations and has a very minimalistic approach... very basic, but clean and modern. No surprises here, but good. There are other hibachi places around of the same caliber... the only advantage to eating here is it's easy to bounce to other places in Scranton. read more

This is my favorite hibachi in the area. It has an awesome bar if you just want to drink some good sake or sapporo. Ive yet to have the Sushi here but I here nothing but good things about it. The sushi bar has its own stool area that reminds me of the cool Japanese joints in NYC (and well Japan itself really). The hibachi itself was top notch. The hibachi chef was the man, he did some pretty cool tricks that aren't normally performed by hibachi chefs. I was real impressed with his work. The food was absolutely delicious. My girlfriend got the filet mignon and scallops. I got the chicken, beef, and shrimp although after trying how delicious my girlfriend's plate was, I would definitely get that next time. It was mouth watering watching the chef cook up the delicious fried rice portion. The salad was also good. Its a tough call between this place and Kyoto. Both are excellent. I would recommend this place over Kyoto only by a margin, because the experience at Kyoto is excellent too, but all in all I was slightly more impressed at this place. read more

Took a wrong exit on the highway and stumbled into Scranton (beautiful town) and saw how Osaka was so busy and decided to give it a try. It was one of those look-around-I- want- what-they're-having moments and we ordered one of their combo plates that comes with fried rice, fried noodles, stir fry veggies, 2 shrimp and soup. I ordered the one with salmon and scallops. The portions were generous and very tasty. My only complaint was the salt level. Both mine and my friend's plate was sodium heavy. Awesome sushi rolls. Super awesome staff. As a matter of fact, my fiancé/wife went two times in three days. We came to Scranton to elope. We walked by this place our first night here and decided to stop. It was 20 minutes before closing and they happily served us. We sat at the sushi bar both times and wouldn't have it any other way. Osaka is good but not great. The sushi is good but the rolls are small and expensive compared to other local sushi restaurants. I haven't had the hibachi so can't speak on that aspect. The staff is always friendly so that's a plus. I suppose the convenience of being on the square helps their business but I only eat here if I am nearby and hungry; I don't make it the reason to go to downtown Scranton. read more

Have not tried the hibachi, I am not a hibachi fan. I have been here twice and both times the sushi was excellent. I really liked the lobster roll and fried calamari appetizer. We had a late lunch here while treavling from Buffalo NY to Delaware. They had very nice habachi show but the taste was so-so. It looked like a Japanese restaurant, but actually not. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is that I didn't try the Hibachi or hot entrees. My experience is based on the sushi bar. It was great. Very fresh and beautifully presented. I recommend the spicy scallop roll, the rainbow caviar roll & the valentine roll. The Miso soup ranks into top 5 ever & I almost always order Miso soup. I can't believe I went to the U for 4 years and never stopped in here. I finally came here for lunch back in June and I was pleasantly surprised. I got a cold green tea and hibachi chicken/steak and they were both very tasty. We didn't get the dinner show with the hibachi, but that was fine since we didn't have a long time for lunch. The food was very, very good and just what I was expecting. The service was also pretty good and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. Osaka is a fine sushi restaurant. I've been there many times and with only one exception that I can think of they have given me prompt, courteous service. (the one time they were slow, but hey, even Babe Ruth struck out a few times) Their rolls are reasonably priced (but as someone already mentioned, the prices did go up), well made, and usually served pretty quickly. Bearing in mind that we are over an hour inland, the quality of the fish is good. I usually get about three rolls (and I agree with the earlier comment that their rolls are a bit small...thinner and longer than some other sushi places I frequent) and an appetizer of some kind --miso soup or edemame usually--and end up paying about 20 bucks. Not too shabby. (They did away with the 1/2 price sushi on Sundays, unfortunately. That was a sad day, when I discovered that.) read more

Despite walking in close to closing time, the meal at Osaka was delicious. I know people often think "bigger is better" with food, but I truthfully hate when sushi roll pieces are huge. The rolls I tried at Osaka (salmon avocado, yellowtail scallion, sweetheart) were fresh and appropriately bite-sized. The crispy salmon roll was good, but the other rolls we had were not good at all. Service is relatively fast. There are little carts going around with horns, which is a little distracting. I wouldn't mind these carts outside but inside there seems to be too much going on. read more

I usually stop into Osaka for lunch and I'm never displeased. The sushi is very good - and the section of rolls is great. I'm a big fan of the shrimp tempura roll in particular. The calamari appetizer is okay, but not great. The service has always been prompt, polite and efficient. It's located right on courthouse square which makes it a convenient walking destination, and the atmosphere is pretty nice as well. In addition to sushi they serve hibachi, though I have not tried that. I would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area and looking for good sushi! read more

I had a very disappointing experience. After receiving a gift card from Osaka I took a friend to dinner. Only to find out the gift cards had no money on it. I was even given the receipt of purchase and had it with me. They claimed I used a month earlier. I was never to the restaurant before. My whole extended familys favorite place to dine I love the spider roll & mexican aka spicy salmon. Seaweed salad. Hibachi filet, filet& shrimp, shrimp, weekday special gives you all 3 plus the soup salad veggies fried rice AND noodles. Try a hot rising sun drink. Adds sweetness to your hot sake or for a special occasion get the flaming punch bowl. Their salad dressing and dipping sauces blow me away. I have to share this story. My 14 year old daughter LOVES this place-she has since she was a baby. We have several local restaurants in the Scranton area that will give you a free dinner on your birthday, but she chose this place for her birthday dinner. She and 4 of her friends made reservations, dressed up and went to this Hibachi. I gave her $30.00 to go, drove them to this restaurant, and they went in and ordered their food. The bills came as 5 separate bills, and my daughter's friends told the waiter it was my daughter's birthday (insert funny birthday song, lights, singing, etc) and she was charged for a dessert they brought to her that nobody ordered. She is vegetarian, she got a vegetable hibachi (about $14) now had an unordered dessert, and she drinks water. The girls all put their bills and their money in a pile, and a different waiter picked up the bills and went to the register to ring them up. The waiter returned to the table, and in broken English, accused her of not paying her bill. He made conflicting statements like "You give me ten dollars, I give you twenty dollars!" All in a loud enough voice that people in the restaurant were watching this happen. My daughter was in tears on her birthday, was embarrassed beyond belief, and she and her friends were frantically calling me asking me to get to the restaurant asap to resolve this matter as they were not being allowed to leave until it was resolved, and were being abused by the staff while they waited for me. I arrived, and suddenly EVERYONE's tune changed. The staff were hugging my daughter, apologizing to her that her birthday was being ruined, but still insisting that her money (the money I gave her that she no longer had) was not used to pay her bill (it was) and that I owed the money. All of this was happening on a busy night, and the entire restaurant was watching. I paid the bill (which included a tip for this horrid staff-they included the tip in every single child's check? Each was a bill for ONE meal!) And I left with five traumatized teenagers. I called a friend in the DA's office, and I'm waiting to address this legally. I absolutely will be pressing whatever charge might stick. We will never, ever return to this horrible place. We love hibachi, but we will go to Kyoto. read more

I have been here many times and have never had an issue until tonight. Tonight's experience was so bad I will never give them my business again. We were sat for hibachi and from the very beginning there were problems. The chef was having a hard time cracking eggs and the first two were unsuccessful as he got egg shell in them. The last egg was flipped off the hibachi spilling my FULL GLASS OF WATER over my date,myself and inside of my purse that was hanging on the back of my chair. The chef apologized profusely which was appropriate however that was where the customer service ended. Since the manager did not come out when the incident happened I thought he would come out at the end. After the chef was done cooking still no manager till finally some one came over right before the bills came and asked if everything went alright which means no one told them of the incident at our table. The woman walked away and said she would find out what happened. 15 minutes later a manger comes out and apologizes and gives a $10 dollar gift card and jokes about the incident. I thought that the nightmare Customer service was over....boy was I wrong. Then our checks came I was confused when my date still received his check as at most restaurants the dinner would have been comped as there was a serious issue. I spoke with three different people and not one of them offered me any basic hospitality that a normal restaurant would offer. The last woman I spoke with after I told her how upset I was at their lack of customer service asks me "well were you able to eat your food". I was beyond angry at this point and told them I would never offer them my business again. I still cannot believe the ridiculous customer service offered at this restaurant. read more
