My partner and I got the spicy kina salad and miso soup to start with. The salad was fantastic and tasted like a spicy crab poke bowl, and the miso soup was good. We also got fried calimari which was great on its own, but the sweet chili sauce it came with made it fantastic. For sushi we had the sweet potato, kina/crab, spider, and Philadelphia roll. The Philadelphia roll melted in out mouths, and the spider roll was giant and really solid. The sweet potato and crab rolls were on par with others we've had too. We also got the Magic special roll off of the specials menu. It was tempura fried sushi that we can't even remember what it originally was, but it was phenomenal. It basically turned out to be warm tempura cream cheese, and the contrast with the cool crab meat on top was phenomenal. read more

I didn't expect to see a Japanese restaurant in Scranton. Although it is not run by Japanese, the food quality is exceptionally good. The raw fish is very fresh. The plating is really artistic. Their sushi rolls are unique. I've been to many sushi restaurants, their dynamite roll comes with some sort of mango sauce on top, making it very refreshing. A must try dish. read more

The moment we walked in, my wife said, "I have a bad feeling about this place," and she couldn't have been more right. The vibe was off immediately, but things went downhill fast. First stop: the bathroom, and that alone should've been a warning. It was dirty and clearly neglected, which is never a good sign in a restaurant. Then the food arrived. The gyoza and shumai tasted straight out of a frozen bag, the vegetable tempura was limp and greasy, and the salad might as well have been driftwood lettuce. The sushi was drenched in sauce to the point of drowning, and the rice managed to be both hard and mushy at the same time, an impressive culinary failure. We even got mean-mugged by the sushi chefs for daring to walk in. As for the chicken yaki soba, I would've preferred they tossed us a pack of instant ramen and saved us the trouble. We will never be returning. Once was more than enough. Absolute trash. read more

We were in town for the weekend and decided to try this place close to our hotel. It's a cozy setting; you're more likely to get a table if you come during less busy hours. We ordered gyoza dumplings as an appetizer -- they were pretty good. Our sushi dinner entree came with miso soup and salad, and I ordered a side of seaweed salad. My kid ordered the California roll and I had the spicy combo with tuna, salmon, and imitation crab meat (the combo name I can't remember, Kani perhaps?). Overall, no complaints; everything tasted fresh. My only complaint was that service was very slow and it took a long time for our sushi to arrive, though our apps came out pretty quickly. But, I attribute the slow service to a busy Friday night. If we're in the area again, I would come back. read more

Exceptional seafood quality in an area that people might laugh at because it's landlocked. Quality is on par with NY/NJ metro areas I'm used to from where I previously lived. Service was great, wait staff were attentive without being annoying. The sushi chefs were slicing away, heads down working to get the food out quick. Decor reminds me of your standard sushi restaurant, nice to see around these parts. Had the Akita and Dynamite rolls, wifey had sweet potato and chicken tempura rolls. Great tasting and unique; I mean there are definitely unique rolls on the menu. Unfortunately I had a very bad reaction after eating the tuna roll here today. Within about 15 minutes I experienced severe stomach cramps, dizziness, sweating, and vomiting. I've eaten sushi many times before and never had this happen. I hope the restaurant looks into the handling and storage of the tuna so this doesn't happen to someone else. read more

The food was so good! As a person who has went to Japan various of times, I would say the sushi is very much authentic!! My mom who is fully Japanese also loved the food too and got the bowl with various of fish options and the food portion was HUGE! Definitely worth the price!! The service was pretty good. Only one person was working during that time but she was able to serve efficiently. When I walked in they were not permitting anyone inside. The lady came and took my payment and I left. When I ate the food was very good. I liked the teriyaki sauce. Tiny place but dang the food is excellent! They are making the sushi right there in the dining room so you can watch. The variety of rolls is incredible. My husband and I came here during a ski weekend at Montage and this was such a great find. We both got the dumpling soup. He got the Tuna Lover meal and I got Scranton Roll and Sunshine Roll. Both were amazing but the Scranton Roll was perfect! Only one server for the whole dining room so just be patient. But service was still quick and water was always getting filled. The restaurant is clean and they staff is very knowledgeable and don't mind explaining the menu items. My personal favorite is the Hamachi Kama. It's by far the best I've ever had in this country. Their rolls and sushi are delicious and their hibachi is second to none. It goes without question that they have the best fried rice. I highly recommend Akita. Definitely a place we would order from again. Note that they only do take out right now. We decided to drive to Akita from an hour away because where we were staying didn't have quality Japanese food. It was SO worth the drive! We asked the waitress to pack the hot and cold food separately and they were very nice on the phone and accommodating. When we got to the restaurant, they were very careful with COVID (which I appreciate for people handling our food). Their door was closed off and they had a small window for food to pass through. The woman inside wore a mask. There was a table outside with "clean" pens and a separate container for "dirty" pens. They also had hand sanitizer and masks on the table. This is a photo of all of the rolls we ordered. The rolls were all delicious, and they were generous with the ingredients (avocado, spicy tuna, etc). Favorites were the Godzilla (w/o cream cheese), angry dragon, Moosic and the beef negamaki & hamachi Kama. The only thing we didn't care for was the kani salad, king crab roll, and the salmon teriyaki was small. We also really liked how they packed each roll individually and labelled each one since we had so many rolls. We were VERY happy with our order and it was well worth the drive. read more

how does this place have 4 and 1/2 stars? I picked up an almost 30 dollar sushi entree today. The tuna was beautiful looking and disgusting to eat. Even my cat (who I bought it for) wouldn't eat it. Yum! Amazing sushi and byob too is definitely my favorite combination for dinner. Akita has great fresh and quality options for real fish lovers too. We started off with the sashimi appetizer to share, which had some great thick cuts of tasty fish. We also got some seaweed salads and miso soup. The seaweed salads were an awesome generous portion. The three of us also shared the rainbow roll, passion roll, and naruto roll. All were very tasty and delicious. My friends liked this place so much she got it twice this week.
