Boats & Bikes at Bald Eagle State Park - The view of the boat rental dock from Boats & Bikes shop at Bald Eagle State Park

Boats & Bikes at Bald Eagle State Park

Located in Bald Eagle State Park, Boats and Bikes is a simple shop with one goal in mind: helping…read moreyou enjoy a day on the water. Specifically, the shop is there to help you enjoy Joseph Sayers Lake, the scenic lake in Bald Eagle. This place rents out a variety of boats to park goers, from canoes and kayaks to pontoon boats and jet skis. Also, you can rent for short and long periods of time alike - anywhere from an hour to all day, according to their website. The website also mentions that they offer an on-lake fuel dock with non-ethanol fuel, fishing and boating supplies, live bait, snacks, drinks, ice, and camping supplies. Like I said: they're here to help you enjoy your time on the water! Reservations aren't required, but are recommended - but also aren't available for each type of boat. I know this because prior to my visit, I learned that canoes and kayaks are first come, first serve. Not a big deal, but still something to be aware of, and admittedly weird since you can reserve a paddle board...just, not canoes or kayaks? When I visited, a relative and I opted to enjoy three hours of kayaking on the water. A few other groups went for the pontoon boats, and we also shared the water with folks who clearly owned their own boats and were using approved launch points to join in the fun. Our visit was pretty straight-forward; we paid, got outfitted with life vests and paddles, and got some help launching ourselves after we asked for it. Coming back in was admittedly less fun since the very busy staff didn't come help to pull in our kayaks; we managed by ourselves but it took a bit of coordination and teamwork since a kayak that's half in, half out of the water isn't particularly stable. We also admittedly dodged some groups of people on land because not every other guest remembered that masks are necessary outdoors in 2020, too; still, the good news about being outside is that it's at least easier to keep your distance. And the staff did mask up at all times, so at least being inside when checking in and out wasn't overly stressful. Boats & Bikes is exactly what it sounds like and I definitely appreciate their set-up, which made it easy to enjoy time on the lake in this beautiful state park. I would definitely come here again and take advantage of the different boat rental options during future visits to the area.

I attended a wedding here a few weeks ago during cold, wet and raw fall weather. When she said she…read morewas getting married at a marina I really didn't know what to expect. I will say the little patio area overlooking the water was very pretty, with a few different levels, gorgeous flower beds and an oversize fire pit which was greatly appreciated on this rainy day. The event tent, which I'm assuming is up year round, was questionable and would not have been my first choice. Although they (assuming the marina) made an attempt to warm it up with space heaters they continously kept unzipping the back or side vinyl and letting cold air in. The chairs/tables were flimsy for an event and placed too close together. It was decorated tastfully but that was my friends doing and the food was catered by another business. The wedding itself was held outside and thankfully I planned ahead and brought a towel because no one at the marina thought to wipe down the (very) wet plastic folding chairs. Staff was nice, but I don't know who worked for whom or who was just family helping out. The hardscaping is stone or slate, which had some steps and some irregularity. It was slippy when wet and I was nervous walking on it in heels. The inside of the building was quite nice, modern, although a bit choppy in configuration. While I understand because of the space I saw that it would have been small for her wedding, as an event space in general it would be a better option. They also had a bathroom "RV" beside the tent (with slippy, slotted, metal steps to boot) but for fear of falling I went inside. Knowing what she paid I would have expected ALOT more at that price point, especially since parking wasn't the greatest, as it was limited (they did provide a golf cart shuttle) and the lot was gravel. It is however right on the water with a boat ramp, but you're overlooking the Susquehanna which isn't very scenic. Maybe as a marina they do a great job but for an event space I'd say pretty but impractical.

Older boat needed revamp - took to derek @ marine plus. First order of business was to go through…read morethe motor and do a compression check. Was told that came out fine apparently with "all cylinders reading 100" - if you want attention to detail like actual readings for each cylinder this is not your shop. I made it a point to speak to derek the entire time I reached out to marine plus, and he seemed like he never really knew what was going on with my boat. He was either out of the shop or having telling me to speak to a mechanic because he didnt know or care. Very poor communication. After the engine is running and compression is good I ask derek what the next step is and that is to do a water test to run the motor under load. I agree and ask when can he do it -- oh this week its too backed up and he doesn't know he can do it next week. Fine, I say ill come in monday to pick the boat up and water test it myself. Take a day off work, rent a truck and go to pickup my boat. Take the cowling off and the fuel lines are disconnected. No one bothered to hook anything back up. They reluctantly sort it out, not before trying to send me on my way without a pressure clamp on the fuel line. I remind derek im going to long level today to water test, he quickly goes back in the shop and from I can gather calls up the mechanic who worked on my boat. Just as I was about to leave derek comes out and says oh by the way there is broken part leaking fuel (fuel enrichment system) that needs fixed. This is the first time I hear about it and he insists I was told. Not the case and I was understandably pissed. He shoves his cell phone on speaker in my face with his mechanic explaining where the leak is. The mech states that it was leaking when he started it up for the first time over a week ago - again I was never informed about this. Its seemed like derek had no clue about it either and just now bothered speaking to the mechanic who worked on my engine. Zero professionalism or communication skills from the owner. Derek finds part of the fuel enrichment system rebuild kit in his shop (2 of 3 pieces) tosses it a me and tells me to get lost. It doesn't fix the problem as you need all 3 pieces. Luckily long level marine had the part in stock so I replace it myself and go to launch the boat. Finally get boat into water and the boat will not go in gear, forward or reverse. They didn't even bother to check if my engine would go into gear. Stay away from this shop if you value your boat and hard earned money.
