I needed to move quickly and called them. It was easy to book them. I shared what I needed and the scope of the work. The day of they came on time. It was agreed that they were going to bring three people and they gave me and estimate for about 3-4 hours. They arrived with two people. I asked why there weren't three people as planned and they said, we are the only ones available. One of them was so slow that I moved faster than him. They took double the time to move everything than quoted. They were very slow. Lastly when they moved my bed, they broke it. They said they would come back and fix the wood fixtures that they broke but they never followed up. Impact, I spent 3x what was quoted, and they switched to two people than 3 people last min. I would not use them unless you are in a pinch and open to some of your items to be broken. read more

Used R&S to move our 1100 sq ft home from Felton to Santa Cruz. They were recommended by a co-worker who used them to move from Santa Cruz to San Jose. I phoned up 3 weeks in advance and Robert said it would be $150/hr and put me on the calendar. After reading Lena M's 2009 review I was wary, but went ahead anyway. Robert said he would call me before the move to make final arrangements. He did not. I called him 2 days before and he reaffirmed we were on the calendar and, evidently, there wasn't any more to discuss. So, on the day of the move, I am leery. They haven't inspected the premises, I have an open ended $$$ commitment and a scary Yelp review haunting me. It is also hard to judge Robert's veracity. The crew was supposed to show up at 8:30, but they called at 8:15 and said they would be there at 9:30. They did, in fact, show up at 9:20. Three guys and a big 26 foot truck. They apologized for being late (brownie points!), and they just humped it for 90 minutes loading everything onto the truck. This was great crew. Good spirits, hard working, and go go go. They did bust a peg out of the sectional taking it apart, but they got some washers and fixed it at the other end. About the only other sacrifice to The Moving Gods was a small chip on one of our walls at the old place, no big deal. But, now I am scared because I still haven't seen any paperwork and everything is on the truck. Is this a scam? Will they charge for the drive out? Or the drive back? Lena M has me on the defensive! Just before leaving, the ask me to sign the contract and...and...no surprises. Very straightforward. $150/hr. Decline extra insurance. And the clock started at 9:30, so I got some 10 minutes free. They drove straight down behind us and, contrary to Leslie S's review, seemed very safe doing so. They unloaded up a flights of stairs. Reassembled everything. Offered to help with anything else. Took away some of the goofy odd-ball boxes we wanted to get rid of. Comes time to settle up and it is now 12:43. Uh oh. Will they charge me for an extra quarter hour or the drive back to the shop? NO! They stopped the clock at 12:30 for a straight 3 hour, $450 charge. Excellent and more than fair. So.....I think you can hire these guys by the hour. They seem to be quite honest and certainly they are very hard working. The only reason I am not going 5 stars is because I think Robert could run the front of house a little better: calling back, explaining how the clock works, paperwork first, and, ideally, eyeballing the job in advance and just quoting it so the crew wouldn't have to jam for 3 hours without a break of any kind. If they could go slower without clock pressure I think there would be less chance of damage too. I used Robert & Sons three times to move me over the last 6 years. This last time was a complete disaster, they stole things from me, left things behind, emptied wardrobe boxes on the floor on my bedroom, lied about the rate and I will never, ever use them again. I was promised 4 guys and 2 trucks midway through the move, they are rushing and telling me 2 guys are taking 1 truck to another job! In the end they just stacked box upoin box no matter what I wanted where they just ignored me to get to the other job. I had to pay someone else to come help me sort out their mess. I've used this company twice. These guys showed up exactly on time, got right to work, and never stopped moving. They gave me a straightforward quote, stuck to it, worked VERY hard, and brought wardrobe boxes for me to use, free of charge. My only complaint... they offer to stop by a few days before the move and see your house and how everything is set up. Both times I said that was a good idea and it didn't end up happening either time. The first time it worked out fine. The second time it didn't. We moved my mother-in-law from a one-bedroom to storage and a studio, then to a different studio and different storage, then to yet another studio and pulled stuff out of storage. They were great - provided used boxes free for storage, helped us pack it all in so it fit, put furniture together, took it apart, put it back together again, were on time, cheap, and stood by their estimates. Very upset with Robert and his company. Everything was great got a quote to do move up north, called him that evening and booked him for the following week. Once they arrived it all went down hill... Arrived with the wrong size truck, had to go get a bigger truck (put us behind a couple hours), then once they start loading the truck Robert asks if he could deliver it the following day instead of that day as planned for. Was very frustrating because I am moving my 87 y/o grandmother up north and having someone meet the guys there to deliver her belongings. Robert GUARANTEED it would be there the following morning at 10 am. 10:05 and they weren't there so thank god I had his cell number. The young guy tells me they will be there in a couple hours. I told them that doesn't work. They guaranteed the time and I have someone there waiting to let them in. Next thing he says is they just got in an accident a minute before I called. Hard to believe. It was true and I am sorry they were tailgating someone through Santa Rosa but not my fault. They delivered everything by 4 pm that afternoon. Furniture was destroyed and things are missing. I have called them 3 times and have not personally heard from them. We hired them and have heard nothing from them. We had to hear this from my aunt who met them at the unit. Now I am getting calls that more items are missing. The lack of communication is unbelievable. Furniture and items are destroyed and gone and I have yet to hear from them. I called and a lady said yes truck delivered it Thursday. I said yes but items are destroyed/broken/missing. How do we go about handling this. She said Robert would call me back. That was my 3rd attempted at getting ahold of them and it was Friday at 5:25pm. Still no phone call no follow up no nothing. We should have been contacted immediately and have not been. For all we know items were stolen. My grandmother had very fragile, collectable items. Things from her great grandfather. Gone! We hired Robert because he was nice, honest, had great references. He was in the middle as for as 2 other quotes we received from other companies. Look what we are dealing with now. I will say the guy that did 95% of the moving was a doll and so awesome. I would not use this company for the simple fact that one of the drivers of these huge, big, heavy trucks are careless and unsafe. I saw the driver pull out in front of one car (when he could have waited), almost tipped the truck over and caused the car he pulled in front of to drive in the ditch. Very disappointed. I gave Robert the starting and ending address of my move and he quoted me $750. I didn't look anywhere else as I thought that was a great price. At the end of the move he told me the total was $1080. When I told him that was a far cry from what he initially quoted me he replied, "It took me longer to get to the destination that I thought." He KNEW the mileage of the move and it's his job to give an appropriate estimate prior to the move. He wouldn't budge on the total amount and even said "I'm giving you a good deal." We called to hire help moving three cabinets upstairs and explained to Robert on the phone that there were over 70 steep stairs and it would be difficult. He sent out two old guys that arrived a half hour late and looked at the cabinets and said, "I am in my 60's and this is too heavy for me. We are late for our next appointment" They just left. When I called back to talk to Robert and ask him why he sent me these men when he knew the situation he told me to hire someone else and talked over me the entire conversation. No apology. No concern for his customer service. I finally just had to hang up on him. For someone who has his name on his own company you would think you would have pride in that. Robert and Sons screwed us over in a way we have never experienced before by any service company here in Santa Cruz and left us is a terrible predicament. This company is completely unreliable. We scheduled with Robert and Sons 2 weeks before our move to pack a 16' moving van for us. Someone called from their office the day before to confirm that the movers would be here at 12 noon, Friday of Easter weekend. The morning of the move, we received a call from the mover telling us he had a bigger than expected job and would be at our home no later the 2:00. When 2:00 came and went and nobody was here to pack the truck, we called the the mover and were told it would be at least 3 to 4 more hours before they could be here, at approximately 6:00pm! When I question him, he said he was sorry but Robert and Sons had hired him to help out and he did not even work for the company! I tried calling the Robert and Sons office several times and had to leave messages, and never received a return call. The mover finally called at 8:00pm to see if we still needed him to come to pack the truck!! I told him no thanks. We were able to pull together friends and neighbors to help us but we will all be telling everyone we know about this unbelievable, terrible, irresponsible customer service for a long time. I was left stranded by Robert and sons! I scheduled our move and at first seemed very professional. On the day of the move I kept calling when they didn't show up and they finally answered and said "sorry, we only have one person and can't move you." Didn't even bother to offer to move me another day. I was supposed to be out of my townhouse and storage unit the day I scheduled the move and they didn't seem to care. I used Robert & Sons twice, once to put my stuff in storage and another after I found a new place a few months later. Overall, I was pretty pleased. Robert is a good guy. My only problem is that there was some damage to a few items when they moved me into my home and the movers (Robert was not there) tried to cover it up. When I informed them, his wife came to assess the damage and then she offered me a price - in cash, there on the spot - that was much less than the damage. I accepted it, but afterward, I felt a little cheated since it would have cost me more to buy the items new. But that was more my fault; I should have protested. read more

We did a very unusual and HUGE move, one of the biggest Robert and Sons has done in over 30 years from two states (Santa Cruz, CA and Sandpoint, ID) to Bend, OR. We obtained four bids ranging from a high of $20,000 (a very reputable Santa Cruz mover) to Robert and Sons at the other end of the spectrum (including my rented trucks on the 2nd move--I'll explain later), about a total of $8,000, including gas, pizza for the guys a few times, and including a $300 bonus because they handled and moved everything without breaking anything (my idea to pay them this as I had a lot of early European antiques, very expensive original artwork as well as a LOT of heavy items associated with my business). I also got bids from two movers I have used in the past. I had not used Robert and Sons prior to this move. During this move R&S used a total/equivalent of FOUR 26 foot moving vans, plus a 10 foot trailer, so a massive move that spanned a total of a week and went into a 5,000 square foot rental. Once his trucks were loaded I put my padlocks on the doors of his trucks and trailers. Firstly, let me say that we looked at the reviews on Yelp of Robert and Sons and some of them said that he did not exhibit the best in managerial capabilities. Otherwise, most of the reviews were pretty positive. I also checked with the federal Transportation Agency regarding any complaints or issues; there was only one complaint and that was some 8 years ago. That said Robert and his crew (as well as temporary help he used in three cities) were far and away superior in every sense. Robert is fabulous as a manager. He knows how to motivate his people and his temporary help as well as keep them moving. I was amazed at how hard these guys worked. It was all I could do to direct all that was going on (this goes here, that goes there). Robert was always telling me "don't lift that box" or "don't move that, that is what you are paying us for!" Despite that my wife and I just naturally wanted to "pitch in" as it were. He worked in environments of rain and snow as well as cold weather and never flinched. I HIGHLY recommend them for your move. This review would not be complete without kudos going to Brian, Robert's right-hand man. Brian--a big boy!--is of the gentle giant variety and I never saw him unless he was putting on a sweat. I also entrusted him with piloting my other rented 26' truck from our move from my huge storage unit in Sandpoint, Idaho back to Bend, Oregon. He did an exemplary job. I hope you have him on your move as well. Robert's brother (who lives in Eugene, OR) helped us in Bend on the first unload and also went with us for the second move from Sandpoint, ID back to Bend. A very cool guy and a truly hard worker. Just note that you need to have cash or check to pay him, no credit cards. In my opinion a very small price to pay for the excellence he and his crew delivers. Oh yeah, they gave us LOTS of free boxes and 12 wardrobes!!! According to Robert we had several "firsts" for him in his moving career; notably the largest; secondly the most complex; thirdly, one with the heaviest item (an 1800 lb EMPTY safe--hey, I got it for free, so it was worth it to move it!). Now that we are in Bend, Oregon we will be needing to move in another 12-18 months after our new home is built. We only hope that Robert and Brian will come up there to move us the 25 miles to where our new home will be. read more

We hired these guys to pack a truck we rented. They showed up an hour and a half late. Forgot to pack a large book shelf so they just threw it on top of everything at the end and table chairs went through the back of it. An antique stool my grandmother gave me was also shoved in and the leg of the chair was splintered off all the way down. Family photos were padded and wrapped but still were smashed. Nice guys, low price and worked fast and were the only ones available at last minute but was absolutely not worth the damage or wait. read more

I spoke with Robert's wife and left several messages but no one has had the courtesy to return my calls nor to reimburse me for the repairs. Be very, very careful. The owner and his wife are very shady. I was guaranteed 3-4 hours at $140 an hour, one large truck and three movers. A smaller truck showed up with only 2 guys...and guess what the move took almost 6 hours. Then the owner's wife tried to charge me for the truck's return to the office which was not in the contract. Get everything in writing, and get one set price. NEVER HIRE THIS COMPANY BY THE HOUR...they will make sure it's a slow process. Better yet, go with someone else. We already had enough boxes from our previous move, and they were happy to use those rather than charge us for all new boxes. They were very friendly and easy to work with. As long as I live in Santa Cruz County (which will likely be my lifetime) I would not consider using anyone other than Robert and Son's for a completely worry free move. The service that was provided to me was top notch. The moving crew put me at ease the moment they drove up and introduced themselves. These guys work hard, very efficiently and they do it with a smile. It has been a few years, but I think the crew of 3 had the entire contents of my home packed in their truck within 3 hours, maybe less. A vanity mirror at the residence I moved from was broken by a crew member. Robert had a repair person out within 2 days to fix it. The cost for packing my entire home and unloading was VERY reasonable. I have a small carbon footprint and even though my job is small I was more than happy to tip Robert's crew generously. I just moved back to the area and I have moved so much these past 6yrs, I was over having to pack and load... and my friends were too :P So, I looked up movers online and these guys have a GREAT score on the Better Business Bureau. I figured I'd give them a try. The move was from Fremont down to Santa Cruz and despite the long trip, they were willing to do it. Robert called me the day before (near the end of the business day) to confirm. He and Mark arrived at my old place a little late, but c'mon, they had to fight rush hour traffic over then hill AND up the 880 to get there, so not a big deal at all! As soon as they arrived, we did a quick walk-through and they got started. They worked so hard and fast as I finished packing up some last minute items. As we headed over the hill, I ordered them some pizza and soda from Pizza My Heart and after a short break, they were at it again! Everything arrived safe and sound and Robert's wife even stopped by to welcome me to the neighborhood. These guys were very careful with all my things, had no problems making two drops (my new place and a storage unit), they were super friendly, had great attitudes... and again, they are very hard workers. Robert even left me the garment boxes since I had to build a clothes rack in my closet area before I could unpack my hanging clothes and then came back when I had emptied them to pick them up. Their price was extremely fair and was a few hundred less than I had calculated the move to cost. Mr. Robert was very responsive to my need for a short notice move between 2 townhouses ( the other mover that was scheduled cancelled on a late Friday afternoon for a Saturday move!! do NOT ever use Peninsula Moving and Cleaning.....they are irresponsible!). Mr. Robert came out and did an estimate and sent over 4 guys. They got the job done in 2 hours. All the guys were hard working and very careful moving everything. They were more careful than I would be. They made sure all the furniture had felt pads on legs as they saw new wood flooring at the place we were moving into.
