He's gentle (no pain!) and friendly, and plays awesome music - rock, blues, country - instead of the mindless New Age crap you often hear. On the last two visits, I've heard Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, and Bruce Hornsby. (He plays entire albums.) Second and third are Nancy Green and Lori Miller, dental hygienists extraordinaire. I felt satisfied with both the first dentist, new crown and office personnel, then the dentist musical chairs started. Two years later, I needed an old crown replacement and should have taken a clue when it took 5 visits to get it right. Seven months later, problems with the new crown and told that gum lengthening should have been performed. Received a referral to their associated surgeon @ Benchmark Dentaln who is "supposed" to be part of their office/network. Yep... I complained because that's not cheap and my expectation is to get it right the first time. Additionally, the original crown and support completely broke with them suggesting an implant. Toni, the area manager, so nicely calmed me by stating (lying) that they will pick up the cost of the lengthening and associated crown. My visit to the referred surgeon for crown lengthening was completed and I received the projected cost. The referred office was informed upon my check in and checkout that the Northpoint office was paying the bill. They contacted Northpoint and informed me that Toni said she will review the cost and get back with me. Ha Ha...no calls from her and never available to talk. Yep...ghosted. Byrd recommended that I go to regular dentist to receive my extra cleanings, which I know what a periodontal clinic is supposed to do. You should rotate every 3 months from your regular dentist to your periodontist for a total of 4 cleanings a calendar year Byrd recommended 2 implants for $13,000. I ended up going to ClearChoice and got a 2nd opinion. $10,000 for 2 implants, and all follow-up appointments are included. I will never step foot in Byrd Dental Group again. Like many others before me, I didn't read the reviews. Horrible mistake.

I have the top executive-level dental plan, so even though Dr Gurley is out-of-network, I did not expect a 6-month visit to be more than $100 or so OOP, typical of other dentists here and in ORANGE COUNTY, CA. I then had a crown chip, and Dr Gurley again spent 10 minutes with me as he ground the corner of my crown to remove the sharp edge. I was shocked when I ended up with a bill for $959 dollars, of which insurance paid $411. It appears Dr Gurley DOUBLES the rates that top-of-the-line dental insurance pay, essentially double dipping. Gurley charges $145 for an oral exam and ins pays $72. Gurley charges $604 for a 6-month and ins pays $217, including $190 fee for panoramic & ins pays $82! Now no one will call me to discuss.

The ladies at the front desk were an absolute pleasure, so sweet and so professional, they made me feel so welcome. I also was taken to the back very promptly which was amazing, as I am usually used to waiting for a while at previous dental offices. Getting my teeth cleaned was a breeze. My technician was so so sooo sweet, I wish I could mention her by name but unfortunately I forgot it! Super knowledgeable and friendly. Dr. O'Neal was also wonderful. He made me feel super welcome and eased all my stress; Prior to coming in, I was scared and concerned for the health of my teeth as admittedly I haven't been taking the best care of them. He was very comforting and eased my concerns, and made the time to get me in for a cavity fill very shortly after the cleaning. He was also very funny! The prices here are slightly higher than other dentists that I have visited in the past, but I must admit that I like the fact that this office uses the newest equipment. Before coming here, my previous dentist that my family was using, only had old equipment in his office, and after coming here, I see why it is important to use high quality equipment and the newest technology. Their billing and insurance claim procedures are very misleading. Leading up to the day of my procedure, I was never informed what the procedure would cost. On the day of, I provided my insurance information to the receptionist who told me, "I was covered and to have a seat in the waiting room." She would later deny having told me this, but if she did not say this to me, my next logical question would have been how much is this costing me today? Instead, they waited until after the procedure was done and I was recovering from anesthesia to hand my wife a bill for $7000.00 to extract one tooth and told her that it had to be paid in full today. They would then submit my claim to my insurance company and I was responsible for following up. To no surprise, my insurance barely covered 10% of the cost. I was very surprised by this bill and certainly not prepared to pay it that morning. My wife had to scramble to find the money from various sources as I was still in the recovery area. This is not how health care service should be transacted. I should have been informed of the cost and the insurance claim process prior to my procedure. Then I could have made an informed decision regarding my finances and my health care. I believe they were not up front with the cost because it would have deterred me from getting the procedure that day or I would have at least shopped around for more affordable options. Buyer beware of this unscrupulous practice by some providers to trick you into getting expensive services and leaving the customer to deal with their insurance provider.
