I paid for a procedure expecting improvement, not a result that now requires reconstructive surgery to correct. Given the outcome, I am requesting a refund so that I can put those funds toward repairing the damage caused. I am also extremely disappointed that my attempts to communicate have been met with silence and that I appear to have been blocked from email communication. That is neither professional nor an acceptable way to address a patient's legitimate concerns. While I would prefer to resolve this matter amicably, I am requesting a direct response regarding reimbursement. I did not anticipate paying for surgery only to need additional surgery to fix the results. He's a misogynist who disrespects his wife, and he made the same mistake to his own office staff that he made in me. 1. The day after my breast augmentation surgery, i had enormous bruising where the blood had pooled on both of my sides, at my hips. Shumway skipped my appointment and left his resident to see me instead. My implants were too far apart and the resident tried to move them toward the center by taking each one on both hands and pushing them inward. It was extremely painful 2. I was told to call the office any time with any questions after surgery, but when i did I was made to feel like a nuisance. I kept having to ask about when to start massaging, and every time i asked, the patient care coordinator asked me back if the doctor had told me to start. I wouldn't be asking if he had! 3. I lived out of state so had to do virtual video consults for my follow up. At about 4 months, i expressed concern about the implants being too high (my nipples literally point downwards) and too far apart - one of the implants is so far to the outside that i have underarm hair growing out of it. Shamway's response was, "Well you wouldn't want them down at your waist would you ". That's beyond bad besides manner. Oh how i wish I'd seen a different doctor. 4. After a couple of these virtual visits, i shared that i was not comfortable using FACETIME since its not HIPAA compliant. I asked the patient care coordinator about using HIPAA compliant software and even sent her names of some free software she said that FaceTime is secure. IN YOUR IMAGINATION!!! Regardless, it's not HIPAA compliant. THEY ARE SO UNPROFESSIONAL. He offered to address my concerns by doing another surgery, and wanted to charge me $10000 - this was $2000 MORE than what I paid for my original surgery with him. If he couldn't get it right the 1st time, why would I expect him to get it right the 2nd time? No, thank you! I had red flags leading up to my surgery, but I didn't want to lose my $500 deposit so I ignored them. Don't do that! MAKE SURE YOU DOCTOR IS LEGITIMATE BEFORE COMMITTING!!! Good luck!! read more

Ever since I was a young girl, I dreamed of having a beautiful nose like many others. Being Asian American, I had a wide nose and nostrils. I was very self-conscious about my nose growing up. I went in for consultation with Dr. Shumway in 2010. At the consultation I explained I wanted to have nice and balanced nose with my bridge, tip, and even shape on the sides. He explained he would put silicone implant for the bridge, do pinning on the sides of my nose, and make the nose tip with some point like I mentioned at the consultation. I called right away and scheduled my surgery date for June 2010. After the surgery I noticed right away the imbalanced implant, the sides were totally different, the nose tip was still round and large. I didn't know the implant would stop right in the middle of my nose and not be centered. Which causes the bridge of my nose to concave in the middle and looks and feels very odd. At my consultation Dr. Shumway didn't mention the silicone implant stopping in the center of my nose. When I mentioned my concerns at my follow up appt. he said "I shouldn't look closely into the mirror at my flaws." I thought the point of the post op appointment was to address my concerns that was noticeably worse. Since 2017 until now I've been having a lot of breathing and physical complications with my nose. I can't breathe well, the implant is very uncomfortable and shifts a lot, my bridge dips in the center and all of my nose is very imbalance. I went to a follow up appointment to discuss my nose issues with Dr. Shumway. He told me he would help me. I don't believe he could make my nose better. I don't want to risk another chance to have my nose messed up again. That's why I've been saving up and searching for board certified Rhinoplasty surgeons to help me. I have consultations soon and hopefully the doctors will help with my issues. I'm writing this review if I could prevent anyone from going through what I had to suffer with for 10 years. I had rhinoplasty done by dr Shumway back in 2013. I had saved and waited for years to get this done. My results were beyond disappointing to say the least. I came out of the procedure looking like I was beaten . I've never seen anyone with bruising and also bleeding that didn't stop. I had to go back for a revision surgery as well to correct the bottom part of my nose that was still crooked and to see why I had a infection that didn't seem to clear. The bruising was soo bad I had to go back to have a peel done to try and lessen it as well as lightening cream. That still didn't help so I ended up going to a laser specialist that corrected it somewhat. Dr Shumway did my breast previously with no issues but I do not think he should be doing noses. Please review ALL 12 photos. These pictures show the gravity of damage done by an overly aggressive CO2 Laser resurfacing that should never have done by Dr Shumway. Too many passes on my porcelain fine skin, resulted in severe damage throughout my face. Dr Shumway should have known better!!! To add salt to the wound, he and Kathy Shumway completely ignored the signs of scarring which I had pointed out to them. Instead they made it look like I was being irrational, and seeing things that weren't there. This was the most insulting thing, and was a literal slap to my face. Having worked for two highly reputable Cosmetic Dermatologists in the Bay Area years back, I was well versed in Cosmetic procedures, including CO2 Laser resurfacing, so I knew that something was not right within a month. I have known the Shumway's for over 20 years, and was absolutely shocked that they would not address what was clearly a botched surgery. They should have put the patients needs before their own by either helping me or sending me to a Dermatologist right away so I could get immediate attention. The longer you wait, the scars become irreversible. They told me to give it a year without any medical intervention. At this point I knew that I was not receiving the Standard of Care, so I sought Dermatology and Plastic Surgeon opinions. They ALL unanimously said Dr. S had gone way too aggressive for my skin type. In fact, a couple Dermatologists stated that they could see the stacking marks/lines from going too deep from the laser. One of their employees who has been in communication with me from the beginning told me that she was appalled at the way they had treated me. It was clear to me that Dr S and Kathy both knew that he had made a big mistake because they were in defensive mode, and immediately had a couple employees in the post-op room, in addition to Dr S stating more than once that my results were excellent. In fact, in his clinical notes, it said "excellent results", furthest from the truth!! What's so darn upsetting is Dr. S leaves his practice each day returning home to his family without a care or concern of what he has left behind. And that is a patient that is suffering each and every day from going from having beautiful skin that I've taken great lengths to take care of, doing all the right things, no sun, Vit topical C, Retin -A, sunscreen, etc .I saw an Esthetician at a top Derm office before my surgery and she said" why are you here? In the 30 years of practice I've never seen such beautiful skin." Of course we're our own worst critic so I said my goodbye without doing a facial, and said OK to what Dr S. recommended which was CO2 resurfacing. Now I know that they'll take the $$ even knowing that the procedure is NOT the appropriate procedure. This has been a literal nightmare, and I cannot express the sadness of going from having what Dermatologists and peers had always complimented my skin, to now having heavily scarred skin. Words cannot express my grief. Terrible! I asked for a C/D cup and ended up with a DDD/E and even bigger after having 2 kids. 1 year after my surgery I noticed my right breast was falling. Shumway had to do a 2nd surgery to reinforce the area so my implant wouldn't fall down beneath my bra line. Sadly, he didn't listen to what I wanted and decided 600cc+ implants would be ok. My recovery was horrendous. My skin was extremely stretched. Shumway should be ashamed of his actions. I've been hiding my extremely over sized breast ever since my surgery. Bought a groupon for here and what a deal!!! Jillian is the aesthetician here and she is wonderful! I can't comment on surgery, but I go in once a month for a micro-peel and come out feeling fabulous! She uses the lowest strength on my skin and it goes very quickly and smoothly. It's minimally painful, just a brief burning sensation for a few minutes. She recommends these peels over micro-dermabrasion which she feels is potentially permanently harmful to your skin. The setting is very relaxing and professional. She answered all my questions in detail with ease. Her hands are very steady and she has a very calming voice and personality. What Dr. Shumway did was wrong and his avoidance of admitting to his mistakes is abhorrent. I'm still living with the body in the pictures attached to this message. I can't afford corrective surgery at this time. How should I feel and how would you feel in my situation or if your wife/female loved on was in my situation? I was concerned about scarring and found a doctor, Dr. Shumway, who assured me it could be done with the "benelli" or "donut" lift and larger 500cc implants. I was sold on this idea of beautiful, full and unscarred breasts. I even planned on a lower abdomen liposuction at the same time. Following the surgery I noticed that my right breast was extremely larger than the left. It turned out that Dr. Shumway overfilled the right implant over 200cc more than the left as an obviously mistake since there was only about 50cc difference between the implants as discussed before surgery. I also experienced tearing and very ugly scarring around the areolas that were now shrunken down to the nipple. My stomach looked strange due to the navel scarring and trans- umbilical insertion of the implants. My stomach looks like a horror show! I decided to give Dr. Shumway another try at correcting the surgery but although the implants were properly filled this time and the scar tissue cut away, they again scarred terribly. I had breast augmentation done Nov 2008. I went from a small 36A to a full 36D. I look at my breasts every singe day and love love love them :) My first appt with Dr. Shumway sealed the deal. My husband was with me and we were shown several sizes of actual implants so you could hold them and really get a good idea of what was best. Dr. Shumway explained how to choose the correct size that would look appropriate on my body frame. We chose silicone high profile implants. The surgery was done on a Monday and I was back at work the following Monday. I took pain pills the first couple of days and then other than Motrin and ICE that was all I needed after that. About six months ago I came to Dr. Shumway's office for a TUBA (Trans-Umbilical Breast Augmentation) AKA "through the belly button" and I am very pleased with the results. All of his staff were helpful, friendly, took a good amount of time with me on each visit, and made me feel welcome and well taken care of. I believe Dr. Shumway is the GO-TO expert for this procedure, which is why I choose him, and I am sure glad I did. No complications, I had my surgery on a Monday and was at a wedding THAT Friday, although I did follow his direction to "take it easy" which is very important. I am shocked at how affordable his procedures are. The value WELL exceeds what you spend. After a few months I did start to experience the beginning stages of "capsular contraction" on one breast, which means my body started to form scar tissue around one of the implants, but this had nothing to do with Dr. Shumway, in fact, this is very common for any patient, it just meant my body decided it wasn't used to the implant being there and I needed to massage it more deeply, just as he instructed, which I have, and the situation has improved. Just follow his instructions and everything will turn out perfectly! read more

I feel bad leaving this kind of review, because Dr. Shumway and his staff are genuinely good people, and I believe that they try to do their best and want the best results for their patients. That being said, Dr. Shumway's aesthetic surgical skills are lacking, to say the least. I trusted him to do my rhinoplasty and it looks AWFUL. Maybe even worse than to begin with. After the bad results of the initial rhinoplasty, he offered to revise it basically free of charge, so I let him do it again. The results were not much better. Some time after the second surgery, I let him do a 3rd rhinoplasty on me. I am now living with the results of 3 failed rhinoplasties, and I feel insecure and disappointed every time I look in the mirror. My nose is crooked, still too large, and has a large dent on one side. There is still a hump on the dorsal bridge. You would think that 3 times would have been enough to give me results that I would have been happy with. Nope. At my last appointment, Dr. Shumway mentioned wanting to "do a little more work" on my nose, but unfortunately, it's 3 strikes and you're out! No way am I going to let him work on my face again. So, if you're looking for a plastic surgeon to do your nose, I strongly urge you to spend more money and go somewhere else. Don't waste your time, money, and confidence on Dr. Shumway. Very sorry to say, because again, he is a very nice doctor with an impressive resume and a great bedside manner, but people should be informed of what they're getting into. read more
