I've had several bad experiences with the office of Dr. Gary Phillips. It isn't until now that I…read morehave cut ties with them and decided to post a review. I didn't do so before in fear of decreased quality of treatment if they were to read this. For context, I am a college student who comes from a lower socio-economic background. As such, I need to manage my finances heavily. I have often come across situations where they are not accurate with quoting me a price. For example, I had scheduled a routine cleaning/x-ray procedure. When I asked for the pricing, they told me it wouldn't cost me anything. After finishing, I wasn't informed of any cost and was even rushed to schedule another appointment. They said it was urgent and I shouldn't delay. I immediately asked the cost, and I was quoted a price of $40. I accepted the cost. However, after the procedure finished, I had a charge of $118. I was floored by this amount and the inconsistency between the amount quoted and the price which I needed to pay. While I do realize that it comes down to patient responsibility after billing for the insurance, paying approximately three times the quoted price caught me off guard. About a week or two later, I received a letter from Dr. Phillips in my mailbox. When I opened the letter, I was shocked to see that I owed another $91. I called their billing department and talked with Denise. When I asked about the charge, I was told that my insurance didn't cover both my cleaning/x-rays fully. When I asked further about this, she stated that they assumed, before they bill the insurances, that the cost would always be a 100% coverage. Since my insurance wasn't the 100% coverage that they assumed, they sent the charge to me. Also, they stated that I had another charge on top of the $118 beforehand that they didn't originally bill. After the terrible communication and customer transparency with costs, I have decided to cut ties with him. However, I might as well share three stories that made me further consider never going here again. 1) When I was chatting with one of the dental hygienists, I asked her what she enjoyed about her job. She proceeded to talk about how she gets to see people and how she loves kids. She said one child, in particular, comes in with her father who is a Humanities professor at UCI. This incident is a breach of HIPAA and is an unethical practice. 2) Likewise, when I was chatting with one of the dental hygienists, I asked her what her most interesting story as a dental hygienist was. This time, the hygienist led the conversation and was very talkative. However, she eventually steered the conversation to her medical route and medical care. She then started talking about Trump and how she supported him. She then talked about his policies and how she was for Trump's repeal of the ACA. When hearing all of this, I didn't want to respond as she was cleaning my mouth and was scared of talking further about it in fear of lower my quality of treatment. Normally, I wouldn't mind debating; however, I didn't want to do so in an area where my oral hygiene was at stake. 3) During the middle of my $118 procedure, Dr. Phillips told me he would be right back and left the room for a total of 35 minutes. I first thought it was going to be quick so I waited. I take out my phone at the 10-minute mark since I figured it was going to be a while. I read some articles on my phone for about 20 minutes. I eventually go on my Snapchat, post a picture of myself in the middle of my dental procedure, and said that my dentist was gone for 30 minutes. I thought this was rudely unprofessional and a waste of my time since I was scheduled to be there for only an hour and had class soon after. He comes back soon afterward and goes back to the procedure. I do realize that HIPAA exists, but he could have said he was tending to an emergency or something instead of leaving his patient in the dark. I still don't know what happened that day. Overall, I had several bad experiences and wanted to share them so you could make an informed decision.

My problem is with their billing department. During consultation I made sure that I knew which services I was getting done, and what the costs were gonna be. After everything was set and done, I was being billed for a bunch of procedures that were "supposedly" being covered by my insurance... That was a huge turn off for me. I knew Dr Canjura's father when he was practicing and he really passed on his knowledge and compassion to his son. I was getting massively ripped off at my previous dentist and was set up to undergo a procedure, but after visiting Dr Canjura's office, I learned I didn't need that procedure at all! He explained everyone in detail and in a way I understood. Already have my next appointment made and I'm extremely happy I came back here. Never leaving this practice again!

If you have the time visit the office in person, there you can make an appointment and fill out new paperwork because they are updating all their files and making it all digital. The dentist group taking over this office and his patients is Zak Dental. I hope this clears things up for patients who are trying to get through to Westermeyer's office.

His practice was purchased by another dentist about whom I know nothing. Because of the problems I have had obtaining information from the new support staff, I shall never meet him. I called the office seven days after Dr. Westermeyer had retired to find out the date of my husband's last visit. The unknown woman who answered the phone told me that she would research the matter and call me back the next day. I never heard from her again. The day after she was to have called, I emailed the same question to the office. Again I received no response. The following two days I left voicemails and received no response. That brought us to the end of that week. The following Monday I left another voicemail which was ignored. The office has exhausted its chances. It has completely lost my trust, and I found it necessary to warn anyone using YELP not to give this office the chance to disappoint him or her as well. If I have not heard from the office by the end of this week, I shall file a complaint with the government entity that oversees dental offices.

Until I go in and find out I have 6 cavities per visit *internally crying*. Regardless every time I've come in I'm greeted with the receptionists', Lupe, amazing attitude alongside the friendly dentists. Dr. Redden is a very down to earth, says it like it is dentist. You can tell she has your best interest at heart. She as well as the other dentists, and Lupe are such hard workers and you can tell by the awesome business they have built. I am very well taken care of here and am so happy I have found a homely dentist office that makes an anxiety high, fear of dentists, girl like me feel so comfortable.

He told me that I needed to fix a slide (where your teeth touch, then slide together). In his own words, this "was easily taken care of" with equilibration. I had no crowns on my teeth. I went into hyperocclusion, as my teeth did not have enough vertical or horizontal space between them. Since then I have had orthodontics 3 times and equilibration from several specialists to increase the space between my upper and lower teeth. I had to have my teeth intruded into the gums and my front teeth moved outward to create room. After 15 years I am still trying to resolve this HORRIBLE procedure. Please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere.
