The 4 cheese pizza. Gooey goodness
    Sandra G.

We are in Nanaimo for vacation and we're exploring the area when we stumbled upon Roberts. It's mainly take-out or delivery but there are two "cafe" tables with chairs inside and a large outside area. However the outside area is dirt not grass or cement. There are two huge picnic tables outside that could easily hold 10 people each. We ordered take-out, I choose the 4 cheese and my husband choose the ultimate, plus we had cheese bread. Holy cow, the pizzas felt like they each weighed 3 lbs when we left. The cheese bread prices were huge as well, see my pics. The pizza was absolutely fabulous tasting and the toppings were huge. Definitely a place to try for family pizza night.

I also ordered pick up for just myself another time. Lots of dessert & pre-made meal choices. Even if you're just stopping for something to drink, you'll enjoy browsing through the little shop. They're focused on Italian specialty items but have a mix of other goods there too. Staff are always friendly & are very patient with my packing logistics so I can carry everything myself while using my cane. There's seating inside & on the patio. I'm yet to go early enough in the day to enjoy the patio or on a nicer weather day but I do appreciate the very sturdy ramp up to the restaurant/shop doors & patio. Decent amount of parking too. Quick to drive to from Duncan & I first noticed this place when I took Lake Road for different views. Immediately off the main road but pay close attention to google maps (or whatever you use) when you're driving to the restaurant. As you see the sign & restaurant after you should be slowing down to turn into driveway. By my third visit, I knew what to look for & I didn't have to circle back. Looking forward to stopping here in 2026 & trying more items off the menu.

The floors look to be original hardwood, and there are lots of beams and logs to see. I personally love the old style look, but it might not be to everyone taste. The service is quite good, our server especially, although it did seem like one individual was more interested in polishing glasses and not running food or bussing tables. He was a little passive aggressive with another staff member when he did run a couple of plates, came back and said "see that wasn't that hard." Not a good look. The food was quite good, although we felt, this time like the last, it was a little on the expensive side. It is quite a tourist mecca just outside of Parksville so that's likely part of the reason. It's also quite busy so clearly people are willing to pony up. We had the soup of the days Chantrelle mushroom soup. Evidently those mushroom are very plentiful in the area this time of year. It was quite good, creamy for sure, but we would have liked some more noticeable bits of mushroom. We also shared a Caprese salad which needed more balsamic and a little salt. The capers were a nice add. We finished with Margherita pizza which was nicely cooked and finished with fresh basil. Can't believe I am saying this, but there was too much cheese on it and maybe a little shy on the tomato sauce. Peroni beer on tap is a total winner for me. Have been twice, might go again, but likely not.

TEN STARS if I could…read more I live in Vancouver, and I dine out a LOT. Restaurants open and close a dime a dozen here, which is why I have pretty much stopped writing reviews here/commenting. This meal, on the other hand... since dining there, I have told every single person I've seen about the meal. I can't help myself - I have not stopped talking about it. I'm currently seeking out ingredients so I can try and recreate the dishes, to the best extent my (decent) cooking skills. I didn't take pictures, because the food was far too good to not dig in immediately, but there are plenty of pictures here and on IG and elsewhere if you need to see the dishes. We shared, between three of us: The arugula salad - what sounds like a basic bit*h of a salad, "arugula, pecorino romano, caper berries" was a flavour explosion, and the absolute best opening to our meal. The special - Arancini stuffed with fontina and mushroom duxelle with a truffle cream sauce (IIRC - our lovely server Jen told us about it verbally and I think those were the specifics) - again, delicious, smaller than arancini is typically, in a good way - there were six arancini, and IMO, the more crispy surface area, the better - I don't actually like them when they're the size of a baseball. These were probably golf-ball sized, and light and airy, and absolutely delicious. For mains, we ordered: Seared Diver Scallops - with risotto, English peas, black truffle and grana padano. Perfectly cooked scallops, fresh peas that were bursting with flavour, just all around scrumptious. Quattro Formaggio Pizza - just a perfect Neapolitan pizza, no notes. Sausage and Rapini Pasta - cavatelli, fennel sausage, rapini, garlic, pecorino... somehow they made a pasta dish "light"?! Despite having sausage in the dish, it wasn't greasy or heavy, it was super flavourful and had a nice light sauce, and was again, extremely delicious. My only regret is not ordering another pizza to take home, as we left the next morning. TL;dr - eat here. Don't hesitate.

We're originally from NY but let me tell you, Nonna Luisa Ristorante beats "the best," most well known Italian restaurants in and around NYC. Hands down. There's no way anyone could possibly leave this place feeling anything other than full, happy, and excited to come back. Like a true Italian family, Nonna's won't let anyone go hungry. We were planning on having dinner here one night but the ferry was late. By the time we pulled up it was already 30 minutes after they closed so we sat in our car parked across the street looking up what other places might still be open. The owner happened to be outside and shouts "Are you hungry?!" They had already cleared out for the night, there weren't people still sitting down eating. But he invited us in anyway. I would've expected our server Carmen to be annoyed because I'm sure she wanted to go home but instead she welcomed us in just like the owner did. We thanked her and apologized but she said "that's what we do here, we take care of people." They even gave us a free desert since we were celebrating a birthday. We arrived around 4:35 PM, and by 4:45 PM the restaurant was packed. Thankfully, we had a reservation, so we were seated almost immediately. I came here to celebrate my birthday, and the service was exceptional. Our server took the time to walk us through the specials, which took about 10 minutes, and she was incredibly patient and attentive throughout the entire meal. Since it was my birthday, they also graciously treated me to dessert with a song, which was a thoughtful touch I ordered the Pesto Pasta and added chicken for an extra $5. I didn't mind paying the additional charge, but I was disappointed by how little chicken was included there were only one or two small pieces. The pesto sauce itself was flavorful, but it was quite rich and heavy because of the amount of cheese, making the dish a bit overwhelming by the end. The real star of the meal, however, was the tiramisu. It was honestly one of the best tiramisus I've ever had. The balance between the coffee flavor and sweetness was absolutely perfect, and the texture was light and creamy. I would happily come back just for the tiramisu. The portion was also very generous and could easily be shared between two people. The pasta portions were equally impressive. I couldn't finish mine, so I was happy to take the leftovers home for lunch the next day. Overall, I had a wonderful birthday dinner. Between the excellent service, generous portions, and outstanding tiramisu, this is a restaurant I would definitely return to.
