We're originally from NY but let me tell you, Nonna Luisa Ristorante beats "the best," most well known Italian restaurants in and around NYC. Hands down. There's no way anyone could possibly leave this place feeling anything other than full, happy, and excited to come back. Like a true Italian family, Nonna's won't let anyone go hungry. We were planning on having dinner here one night but the ferry was late. By the time we pulled up it was already 30 minutes after they closed so we sat in our car parked across the street looking up what other places might still be open. The owner happened to be outside and shouts "Are you hungry?!" They had already cleared out for the night, there weren't people still sitting down eating. But he invited us in anyway. I would've expected our server Carmen to be annoyed because I'm sure she wanted to go home but instead she welcomed us in just like the owner did. We thanked her and apologized but she said "that's what we do here, we take care of people." They even gave us a free desert since we were celebrating a birthday. This restaurant has a charming rustic atmosphere that gives it a warm and cozy feel. It opens at 4:30 PM, and I was amazed by how busy it already was. We arrived around 4:35 PM, and by 4:45 PM the restaurant was packed. Thankfully, we had a reservation, so we were seated almost immediately. I came here to celebrate my birthday, and the service was exceptional. Our server took the time to walk us through the specials, which took about 10 minutes, and she was incredibly patient and attentive throughout the entire meal. Since it was my birthday, they also graciously treated me to dessert with a song, which was a thoughtful touch I ordered the Pesto Pasta and added chicken for an extra $5. I didn't mind paying the additional charge, but I was disappointed by how little chicken was included there were only one or two small pieces. The pesto sauce itself was flavorful, but it was quite rich and heavy because of the amount of cheese, making the dish a bit overwhelming by the end. The real star of the meal, however, was the tiramisu. It was honestly one of the best tiramisus I've ever had. The balance between the coffee flavor and sweetness was absolutely perfect, and the texture was light and creamy. I would happily come back just for the tiramisu. The portion was also very generous and could easily be shared between two people. The pasta portions were equally impressive. I couldn't finish mine, so I was happy to take the leftovers home for lunch the next day. Overall, I had a wonderful birthday dinner. We went to this place for my wife's birthday on a Sunday evening and I am so happy I made a reservation because this place was packed at 5pm. The server seated us pretty quickly and they have a huge specials menu that they go through and I ordered one of the specials which was described as a pasta dumpling. The food was great they had bread in the beginning and meat and grilled veggies also on the house. we had the tiramisu for dessert and it was amazing! This Italian restaurant is a popular place. I believe they are open for dinner only. Came here to celebrate friends anniversary. As usual, restaurant was packed and by the time we were served, a queue had formed. Everyone in our party said that their food was good. I ordered risotto with asparagus, clams in shell, and top with 2 prawns. The risotto was too salty for my taste but with a glass of Pinot Grigio to counter the saltiness, I was able to eat almost half of the portion served. I also felt it was pricey. They have a small menu on paper that shows prices that are reasonable but they also have menus that are written on the board with prices that are way higher imho. We had a bit of difficulty finding it because I did not expect it to be on the other end of Rockfish Grill. We passed it twice before we spotted the sign When we entered and walked up to the hostess station they asked if we had reservations. Oh no. I replied "no", right then a voice behind us said "table 11". The hostess nodded and showed us to table 11. I'm guessing it was the owner or someone else in charge! Phew! We looked over the menu and noticed the average price was around $30, but no veal parmigiana! Then our server approached and asked us if we'd like to see the Chef's Board. We said sure. That was where ALL the yummy dishes were listed! Also, the average price went up to $50. There, at the end of the list, was the veal parmigiana that I was craving! I have to say that if I hadn't had my mind set on veal there were several other dishes that I would have had a very difficult time deciding on one! I did get my veal and it was fantastic! Well worth the wait and just like how I remembered it. The portion size was very generous. So much so that I had to get a box to bring half of it home! Service was very attentive as there were staff circulating past our table every couple of minutes. My wife and I decided to make Nonna's a regular dinner place. A little confused why they didn't just put it on the delicious fresh bread they were serving for free. I had a layover in Anacortes on my travels up to Friday Harbor and had very little expectations of this restaurant but figured I'd give it a shot. FANTASTIC. The service was above and beyond. I had 3 little kids with me and the server recommended we get a single regular spaghetti and meatballs for all three of them. They split the meal across three plates each with its own giant meatball. I was so grateful for their consideration. Our bread basket was refilled often and there was always fresh water available. The food came out fast - the kitchen was running at blazing speed - and each dish was delicious. The chicken parm was crispy and moist. The mozzarella was perfectly spotted. The sauce was sweet and slightly creamy. No hints of acidity at all. The added cherry tomato slices were at their peak level of ripeness. And I appreciated that they were sliced in half so you could actually stab it with your fork and not make a mess like when they're tossed in sans slicing. Very very happy with the quality and price. We were recommended this restaurant by our hotel, and they called it "the best restaurant in the area". We were not dissapointed. Early in the day when they were closed we walked by to ask about reservations. They were able to squeeze us in on a very busy Friday night. When we arrived at our reservation time, we were greeted with enthusiasm and welcome by the owner and staff. The place is lively and full of Italian villa style vibes including plenty of loud voices and singing. This place started off on the right foot. We were seated at a table that was on a raised area that overlooked the rest of the restaurant. We were presented with a menu, and a live review on a white board of the daily specials. We indulged in a started of a tomato caprese salad and a bottle of Italian wine. We each enjoyed a plentiful pasta dish and decided against dessert. The owner wouldn't have it when he found out if was our anniversary and brought us tiramisu anyways which was decadant and perfectly soaked and rich. The prices for what we had was an incredible value for high quality ingredients and care with the food presentation. We will be back, and I have since recommended this restaurant to anyone I know who is traveling through Anacortes. read more
