A testimony to the quality of products that Robinson sells. Approximately 30 years ago I bought a mask and boa at Robinson's. To me it was it expensive ($65 back then) and I debated spending that much money. BUT 30 years later with many Halloweens, Mardi Gras, other parties and friends borrowing the mask and boa - they are still in excellent shape. Around Halloween time, this is a purely Halloween Store. Cramped aisles of costume after costume from boys, girls, men, and women. Then there are accessories, masks, make-up, and other Halloween items. Almost bought a Ghostbusters costume, but it wasn't even close to authentic and didn't have the backpack/proton pack. I checked Google Shopping, and there were a ton of better costumes at cheaper prices. The place was pretty disheveled, but it was before Halloween, so I understood. A costume shop like NO OTHER, this place is both cool and scary. Like seriously scary. It's like walking into a horror movie, they have super old carnival games with noise coming out of them every couple minutes or so like music and voices (creeeeeeepy).. The place is like one huge haunted attic of someone from many many many many years ago that has just been discovered by you. What seems like old theatre costumes and wigs/props/random accessories line up every inch of the place, with hidden corners and crevices filled with more stuff. Most of the wigs seem to have been worn/tried on but the good thing is that you can try any wig you want and there's a huge mirror to do that-- no frills. The back is lined with costumes you can rent, but they also have a lot of new packaged costumes (ones you'll find anywhere else around Halloween) at the front. It's pretty hard to describe without being there, it's just that unique. If you're in need of a costume, an idea for one, or you just like to visit haunted places, I would def say come check this place out at least once, it's kinda like a museum..Though I did get a couple things I probably won't come alone next time haha yes it was THAT creepy to me! Saturday before Halloween, I needed to get white make-up for the face. How do you explain 2-hours worth of line and one cash register? This place has been around forever. I don't understand why there is no anticipation of peak holiday shopping and no efforts has been made to accommodate customers at this capacity. This place was stuffy, smelley and crowded. Everyone looked pissed. I went to the supposed make-up counter and there is one guy (behind the counter) to help people with questions and products. He seemed disinterested in helping others as the guy before me had to yell to get his attention. I understand it's pretty chaotic & overwhelming....but really?!?! This was my last stop after 5 other Halloween stores ran out of white make-up. I saw stacks of them at this store but no one to help me....and 2 hours in line to wait for this? Not worth it. I walked out. If you must come here, make sure to come early (preferably weeks ahead). Don't even bother for last minute items....unless this place makes drastic improvements next year. read more

I don't get it. Robinson Beautilities is a place you go to rent costumes, the real kinds. Not the cheap ones you get off the shelf made out of flimsy fabric. I've been here three times... and I didn't really like what I saw each time I was here. First of all this place is one big mess, there are clothes everywhere. At least now, they kind of have what you're looking for grouped in sections like "Western" "Witches" "Military" or whatever. But even then, you can't really find anything here. You have to go here with an open mind and just put together a costume with stuff you find randomly. And even when you do find something, it's super expensive to rent out the costume. JUST to rent a men's basic button down collared white shirt, men's shoes, basic vest, and stretchy pants will set you back $65! And these were clothes that most people already have in their closets right now! Are they crazy?!? I'm scared to ask how much it would be to rent the fancier costumes. Another thing I don't like about Robinson Beautilities is that the air in here is just old and dusty. Also, when I'm here, I always have this feeling like as if the store is haunted. All these old costumes and props.. who knows?! I don't think I'll be back here but you never know. Try going to Aardvark to buy your used costume before coming here. We continued this call-and-response, finally meeting somewhere between the pile of white go-go boots, the wall of hats and the creepy seamstress station, at the Lawrence Welk Show dress mile, tucked in the back. The only thing that made me sad about Robinson Beautilities, apart from the part where they don't want you taking pictures, is the fact that all of the costumes and most of the accessories are rental-only, which means that none of those spangles or feathers or epaulets or beads were going to make it home to their rightful place in my costume trunk in the attic. read more

Apparently Robinson's is moving. My mum went to pick up her flapper costume for a party tomorrow night, and they told her she could just keep it on account of no one being there till next Thursday. They threw in gloves, pearls and a boa for free. Apparently they are moving somewhere in the area, but who the heck knows? Came here today in search of Bond girl ideas... came out with a classy dress similar to Audrey Hepburn's in Breakfast at Tiffany's & 3 pairs of shoes for under $30. Michelle, the owner is an absolute gem. She was so helpful and sweet in my costume search today. She said her family has owned the business for 45 years. They also have a seamstress in house for your fitting needs (I wish I'd had a bit more time to prep but good going for me waiting till the last minute and changing my original idea). The staff's creativity astounds me. I usually stop in before Halloween & reserve a costume about a week ahead of time. That way I can avoid the long lines the day before holiday & the selection is vast. One year a beautiful black lace corseted dress (think fancy pirate wench) with gold petticoat layers underneath attracted not only me, but someone else. Voila, as I was carrying it out of the store & going home, I got stopped, not by a cop, but by an opera singer. Due, in part, to that stunning costume, I was invited to an opera party. However great the dress was, the date was less than satisfactory. Little did I know my Italian date was the "star" showstopper/performer of the evening. Apparently he was raised & trained in Italy, immigrated to the U.S.A. some years ago & has even toured in China 2x. It seemed like most of the ladies from young to old clamored for attention from him. Some swooned over him. The men asked him many questions as well, a few wanted to train under him. Ack, what a disappointment, that was a near duddy date, as we spent hardly any time together. However, being given the best seat in the house, was a treat my ears will long remember. Opera up close? It's almost deafening, in a good way. Another year, another Halloween, more imagination needed. I asked the staff, what do you think I could do with this dress? A guy answered without missing a beat, "Lady Elvis!" I said, "huh?" He suggested adding a gold guitar chain, gold stockings & making a bouffant hair do. He handed me a pair of semi shaded sunglasses & said, "this will do." It was a hit. The only drawback of this store is there's no a/c. Don't let the name confuse you. The first time someone recommended this place I questioned the recommendation but no more. This is the best place to go for costumes, accessories, and random dress items whether you're planning for burning man, Halloween and just about everything in between. Walk past all the packaged costumes in the front to see the extensive collection of rental costumes. One area I've found them to be great for are items needed for costumes from various eras - 80's prom to 50's madmen. I haven't left here disappointed yet. Service is friendly and accommodating but can sometimes be slow particularly if there are a lot of other people here. Also while generally well organized sometimes you need to root around a little to find what you want. Just plan to go with a little bit longer than you might expect and you'll be fine. read more

OMG, I can't believe how bad this place was. I take it very seriously to let people know about establishments that offer bad value, but this place absolutely takes the cake... First off, it was me and friend's very first attempt to rent costumes for Halloween, and we couldn't believe how dark, cramped, and dirty the place was. Apparently, no one ever brooms or vacuums this store. Items are strewn about randomly - just not a well-kept place by anyone's definition. However, the lack of service sent it over the top. We were sent from line to line to line, and we could find no one that seemed to know how the process of renting a costume works for 15 minutes. After that, except for one lone employee (a young teenager), the rest of the "adult" employees were rude and/or unhelpful. Even the older gentelman, who was called "dad" by some and appeared to be in charge, was rude. Despite a seemingly large collection, it took us a long time to find suitable costumes and then we tried to rent them. My costume wasn't complete, and they did not have a solution, but I decided to rent it since the part they did had fit well. They then obviously started making prices up right in front of our eyes, but since we wanted to be finished, we agreed. A day later, I found out that I could have purchased my costume at a different store, brand-new and complete, for $20 less than what I rented it for! I mentioned this to the employee when I returned, after asking if rentals should cost more than buying. I also asked about their pricing. He said "no, rentals are cheaper than buying" and "prices are our discretion", but then told me that it was my fault for overpaying by not shopping around first. Wow... I asked a man that works there (the owner?) which wigs were on sale because *inside* the store there was no signage regarding the wig sale -- at all. He said "Oh, some of them are 10% off." Robinson Beautilities is like an assault on the senses. I really wanted to like this place, as I live in the neighborhood. However, I was astounded by the level of dust and general disorder. I regularly shop and thrift and vintage stores, so I'm familiar with the smell of old clothes, but Robinson was a step beyond anything I had previously experienced. In addition, there are several old arcade games for children that are quite loud. Besides the smell, noise, and anxiety inducing chaos of merchandise flung onto shelves, racks, and even scattered across the floor, I was treated rudely by two salespeople. Maybe they were having a bad day (height of the Halloween shopping time), but I would appreciate a more professional attitude. My simple request: the price of an unmarked item. read more

I have visited this store three times in the last month or so. My first visit was wonderful, the staff were very helpful and friendly (although I was misled on the amount of colored hairspray needed to fully cover a wig). My second visit was a little lower on the scale; I found what I needed and was given a 10% discount because the item was a mess, however the person at the register was less than friendly and moved slower than molasses in winter. Today's visit was the worst by far. I picked up four more cans of colored hairspray to the tune of $35. When I mentioned that I didn't pay $7.99 a can the first time, I was RUDELY told "well, our prices go up." To which I responded, "I wish I would have known that so I could go somewhere cheaper; especially since it was your people who told me two cans were enough." I received a half-baked apology and was promptly told that one can was enough to cover her hair. My boyfriend and I walked in here to prep for our friend's 70s-themed birthday party. We love dressing up but, honestly, I hate going to the other costume places to find super cheap, flimsy, cheesy costumes to wear. The moment we walked in to the place, I felt like I was in a time warp. Even the air was different, as if sound bounced off differently. Worm hole, time warp, what have you. The huge space is partitioned into different areas for wigs, makeup, costumes, shoes. The costumes are assorted by era. My favorite was the "shoe room," aptly named by my boyfriend and me as it is an odd, small, dark room, filled with nothing but shoes. The place is magically understaffed. I say "magically" because we wandered the aisles, free to explore and discover on our own, but when we made a wrong turn or were on the verge of giving up a quest for a certain item, lo and behold, a friendly staffer would appear to point us in the right direction. This place is NOT for people who need their hands held through a shopping experience. Rather, it is for the vintage shop explorer, who has the time, patience and romanticism to navigate through a labyrinth, on a quest for I-don't-know-what-but-I'll-know-when-I-find-it. We rented an entire 70s pimp outfit for him as well as a red glitter halter dress and white knee-high patent leather boots for me. Then we purchased some bling glasses and necklace for him, fake blue eyelashes and a giant blue 'fro wig for me. When we walked up to the counter with our items, the gentleman manning the rentals tallied up the items and named a price that was a tad out of our price range. Our eyes must have widened a tad, because he kindly knocked off $20 from the bill. We didn't ask, complain or plead. He offered on his own. Honestly, he was pretty taciturn and personality-less but, as a previous reviewer stated, he did his job well enough and without complaint. Don't run in here with only ten minutes to spare. This place has a lot of pieces to choose from if you want to put together a unique, perhaps one of a kind costume for rent; and yes, it's a big mission to piece together an outfit if you have no clue what your doing, and if the staff doesn't either. Add the element of humid, limited cool air flow, and the mission can seem impossible. However, if you are looking for a mermaid, pirate, señorita, soldier, pilot, Disney princess, or any other more common themed costume. You may be in luck, and be able to get in and out quickly to avoid heat exhaustion. The staff is friendly, but not the "Nordstrom style, know what your looking for types." Possibly because they are new employees. (Which is what I think was the case.) Regardless, they were all friendly and were willing to help look which was awesome. The 2 day rental price we paid for one female colonial theme was $60. This included a dress, and petty coat. The price for one male colonial theme was $50. This included one pair of knickers, a white ruffly shirt, and a coat. If we change our minds and want to cancel our order it will cost $25 per costume for a restocking fee. read more

You must have driven by this place on a stretch of Venice Blvd that is trying (and succeeding somewhat) to be a little hip - and you, like me, probably wondered if Robinson Beautilites was some Under the Radar Transvestite Super Store - the mannequins in disco afros and sparkly weirdness that stares back from the large windows do intimidate. It is a perfect introduction as to what awaits you. Writing this review, I've been thinking of what word best describes this place.. 'Filthy' was my first pick. Not a mildew filth, not at first. The front of the store gets some rushing traffic air, it only starts to smell a little mildewy as you go deeper. Overall it's more of a dusty filth. I don't care how low your Eew-This-Is Gross threshold is - you will absolutely hesitate to try on a mask or god forbid, a wig. If you dare descend into the dark and cavernous rear portion of the store with its haunted and over packed aisles you will find a wonderful selection of very dated and very dusty costumes. And this is cool, right?!! LOTS of old weird costumes and enormous plastic heads abound.. Keep in mind that sizes are generally smaller because people were smaller back in the 70's or whenever most of these costumes were collected (and the last time they were washed), but if you want to dive in and don't mind a relatively high rental price for something you must have dry cleaned before even considering to try it on, Cool on you. For certain you will be the only one in an original Sleestak costume two sizes too small. If you are looking for your run of the mill 'stage' makeup, intense eye contacts, trippy eyelashes, real hair mustaches, cheap- folded up costumes in plastic bags with the white hook on top and colored hair spray you will probably find what you are looking for. These items are safely contained in packages so the probability that you will catch HantaVirus is pretty low. Maybe Skanky is a better word. This place is awesome! My work sends me out on costume runs pretty often, and we almost always end up getting at least a few costumes (if not the entire cast's costumes) from Robinson's. I went there today for maybe the 8th time this summer and was escorted to a new room that I hadn't even seen before! This place is huge, and their selection is great. As if that isn't great enough, the staff is incredibly friendly. I am usually helped by Catrina or Richard... they are both really nice, helpful and extremely accommodating. I've used this place twice for costumes and accessories for a roaring 20s party. The first time I got all decked out and rented a flapper gown complete with headdress, gloves, pearls and boa. My husband got a nice zoot suit as well. The second time I just bought a flapper headband, threw in some pearls from home and wore a black cocktail dress and called it a day. Great service, fantastic selection, pricing varies - some items are reasonable while others are expensive so it all depends on how authentic you want to get. So I tried to return some things I didn't use for my costume and when I attempted to do so, the man told me sales are final. I looked around for signs posting this policy; none. I said this to him and he pointed out it was on the receipt. How on earth is that helpful? You tell the customer after they purchased something that they cannot return it. I feel deceived and conned. Not to mention it is illegal and in violation of civil code section 1723. Their return policy is not posted on their entrance, their cash registers or anywhere in the store. I am the officially unofficial ambassador of Halloween....okay thats a stretch but I definitely love Halloween and this place has got every eccentric costume for that holiday or if its just a Tuesday and you want to play dress up. This store is great for rentals and have everything from Roman warriors to WWII to Vegas beaded and feathered Showgirl costumes and about everything you can possibly think of in between. They also sell wigs for those of you who like to go incognito or recently shaved your head like Britney Spears and want a new do. They also carry makeup, tights, gag/prank toys and props, fake mustaches, eye patches and parrots for you pirates out there. I remember the first visit I had over here and was in costume heaven! The staff is a little bit odd but it kind of just adds to the craziness. This one guy who I don't think works there anymore (this was about five years ago) was helping us out finding costumes for Halloween and had this really weird southern drawl of a voice and I just remember him looking at me going "You could be a belly dancer" I wish I could record what it sounded like, I laughed about it for years. The costumes are all pretty interesting and alot better in detail than the ones you can get at the Halloween super supply stores that pop up. The cost varies depending on what you rent but the prices are reasonable...I wanna say starting around $40 to rent for two-three nights. I finally made it to Robinson Beautilities! Thanks to a fellow performer's email that they are pretty much going to be updating their inventory...oh what GEMS you can find for Sale!! I was overwhelmed with delight of all the costume props ie. Egyptian pieces, cowboys, indians, french maids, mambo ruffles, 60's, 70's, Asian, Mexican...EVERYTHING! And the back wall featuring HATS! costume hats, vintage hats...I was in hat heaven. I didnt even get to the WIGS. That'll take a day alone. headpieces! All sizes and types w/ gorgeous feathers and sparkle!! My first RB experience ended with purchasing a dreamy showgirl costume. I couldnt resist. It's too beautiful to pass up!!! And then basic costume pieces were there for very reasonable prices..beats rushing to the garment district now that I dont work by there. I adore this place. Yoohoo! Robinson Beautilities isn't moving at all, they've just merged with a prop company (more stuff!). I have lived within 5 blocks of Robinson's for the past seven years and have always been able to find what I'm looking for. The store is funky and could use better lighting, but the wide array of costumes, masks, and make-up is wonderful. I think that Robinson is a Mar Vista institution that adds flavor and quirk to the neighborhood. this place is the most terrible business I have had the misfortune to do business with. I am so sorry that they seem to be holding on by a thread- they kindly offered to support our school performance by offering us an extended rental so we were able to complete our performance. When we returned our rental-the lady ( brunette) refused to believe that we were given a day extra to return the rental and proceeded to become very officious telling us that under no circumstances would they refund the $20 late fee - the principal at this stage -but we had to have to shoes fixed professionally as they were already broken when we had worn them for a day- also the area we had to look at the back for our rental was almost rat infested!!! FILTHY DIRTY! and unfriendly -will never ever return and neither will the other person I was with! -be aware- they steal your money!!! read more

The Beautilities has changed ownership, and while it is about 60% the same (rentals, props, wigs), there's a significant difference to me. less beauty supplies, more junk. they have a toy section now which makes zero sense in my humble opinion, and a whole wall of crappy leg avenue costumes. Who doesn't love to dress up and become someone else for a day or year. I have been in this store a couple times for random items which of both times they did not carry and if they did they had no idea where it was. This store is super over whelming with costumes floor to ceiling and I still have no idea how inventory can be done properly but I do not work there. They carry a variety of new and used costume in which you are able to rent. They seem to have a fairly decent selection and so many mask on display from mascots to hero ones. A majority of them seem to be custom or fan made because of they lack in detail but that could be because of trademark issues. The make up and wig selection is to the right as soon as you walk in and not really any professional brands as this is more geared towards Halloween time. The thing that bothers me and gives me a creepy circus vibe is the random carnival games like skeeball and a rideable Buzz Lightyear to the left of store as you walk in. The sound the skeeball machine makes is like a song you can't get out of your head. It is like a maze once you enter the costume area and a tight area in some spots. This is definitely not ADA compliment and I would think a safety hazard in most of the store. With this all said it won't keep me from shopping there but if there is something I need specifically I would recommend you call prior to showing up. I'm a fairly recent transplant to LA. A friend took me to Robinson's as a way to kill time one afternoon and I couldn't have had more fun. We spent over an hour in there putting on worn out, for sale costumes over our clothes. We went into the massive rentals section and put more costumes on over our clothes. This store has almost everything you can imagine in terms of costumes, make up and random party items. The old costume heads lining the walls are the best. Think of it as walking into your grandmother's attic (if she were a hoarder of quirky dress up items). It even smells like an old attic. Plenty of people complain about the customer service. While the staff isn't necessarily the most out going, they don't have to be. I'm sure there are plenty of people like my friend and I who go in jut for fun and sometimes walk out with a random item. But every time I ask someone for assistance they answer my questions and find what I need. I've been in there when customers weren't getting the service they wanted, but those times are exceptions - Halloween when they are under staffed and one person is helping 3 customers at a time. I don't need the sales person to be my friend. I need them to be knowledgable about their store and as far as my experience goes, they have been just that. read more
