One Man Show!! Rob is the man to go to for a haircut in Dallas... After holding off on finding a barber in Dallas, I finally decided to let Yelp guide my decision. While there are multiple barbers/salons that are rated high, Rob's Chop Shop stood out because most (if not all) reviewers vouched that Rob was their go to guy. Plus, his shop was voted on the top in D Magazine/other voting articles. So, I second the statement that other reviewers have made, and while I am in Dallas, I will return to Rob for a haircut. His shop is located on Parry Ave. For people driving, you can park on 1st/2nd Ave or Exposition. I recommend calling in and making an appointment early as I mentioned he is one barber and caters to one client at a time. Also note that it is a Gentleman's establishment (no funky business in here, just a male sanctuary where you can have a beer, kick back, get a haircut, and have some guy chat) so please respect the protocol. As I mentioned, he offers you free beer/water while you wait/get a haircut and indulges in some great conversation. The shop is vintage/classy and Rob has his own line of hair/beard products. Now on to the cut, I told Rob what I wanted and he went to work. Almost 60 minutes for my cut, Rob was meticulous and precise and his experience was apparent. A warm shaving cream and straight razor trim ended the cut followed by a quick massage of the shoulders and neck (hand held massager which does its job well too). He used beard oil and an aftershave and I was done with a perfect cut that received a lot of compliments by my friends. Admission and price is worth it. Cash only (I paid $30 for my cut). Also, there is an in-house shoe shine booth, which wasn't staffed the day I went in... I will be back without a doubt when I am in Dallas. read more

I walked in with him and was planing on staying until the owner who only spoke to my husband but not me said " This is a gentleman's establishment. Only for gentleman." My husband asked if that meant I'm not allowed to stay here and then the owner said yes and suggested that I go wait at a coffee shop. I've never been kicked out of an establishment for being a women so that was a first! Not sure what's gentlemanly about that and why it would even matter if a women was there. Decided I needed to find a new barber and started looking around. I found a one seat barber in Fair Park and did some research. What can I say except AMAZING! Rob is someone that is dedicated to his craft and knows what he's doing. He owns a one seat barber stop across from Fair Park. He's been in that location and next door for over 20 years. Easy to get to right off the Dart or you can grab a parking pass from him if you decide to drive. Just return it when you are done. Cool shop, music and atmosphere. Lots of rock and roll memorabilia on the walls and even got to enjoy a cold Deep Ellum IPA while I got a cut. The classic gentlemen s cut was of the best fades I've had and the top was trimmed up so that it can grow out a little bit longer. Let me tell you. I hit Dallas 12 years ago, and spent many of those 12 years looking for someone who knew how to cut men's hair. I went to every shop and every barber that a friend would recommend. I personally thought they were lousy. If a barber has to cut my hair with clippers and a #6 guard, or whatever, I'm not interested. Scissors or nothing is my motto. Well, toward Christmas, I learned that a fellow from my home town of Galveston, had won one accolade after another -- D Magazine, Texas Monthly, etc. -- as Dallas' best barber, so I decided to give Rob a try. Guess what! I finally found a barber!!! A real barber! Shaves your neck! You will, too. His shop is over by Fair Park, and it's interesting in its own right. He plays great blues music, there are cases of barber memorabilia, and pictures on the wall of everything imaginable. It's a classy barber shop....reminds me of the old Jack's of Dallas that was on Preston at NW Highway 45 years ago. Go see Rob. He works only by appointment, so you'll need to call him. Great haircut. Awful, unpleasant customer service. Had the appointment at 3:30pm yesterday. He finishes last haircut at 3:55 and takes 5 mins to clean the floor. He began with me at 4:00. I am a busy man, I had to cancel a meeting. 15 mins in, the next appointment arrives. He waits. 4:35 and next appointment arrives. He now has 2 guys waiting. He rushes to finish my haircut. I have been to Rob's a few times in the past and he was very friendly to My family & I. Last Thursday I called Rob and scheduled an appointment with him for the next day @ 7:30 PM. That Friday we drove from N Dallas and when I arrived at Rob's with my son & wife tagging along, we walked in and Rob greeted us as we walked in. He was cutting one man's hair and there were a few more men waiting in front of me. When I walked up to his "desk" he was looking confused at his appointment book when I told him I had a 7:30 appointment. He then looked up at me and said that my wife would have to leave because he runs a "Gentlemen s Establishment'. I asked if he was joking, and he replied with "No, MEN ONLY". Needless to say, I walked out very angry. Now, I understand that he owns his own business and reserves the rights to refuse service to anyone, but I feel that is a very unprofessional manner to conduct business. In hindsight, I feel he may have forgot to schedule me and tried to play it off in that way. Which is also VERY unprofessional. I called last week and made the first available appointment as a new client, which was one week later. Unexpectedly, I had to go out of town on business. In the rush to make my trip, I completely forgot to call and cancel my appointment. 100% my fault and my mistake. 10 minutes into the scheduled appointment, I got a call from Rob asking me if I was going to be able to make it in. I apologized for the oversight. I get it, it was my totally my fault, and I said as much on the phone. After apologizing to Rob for missing the appointment, he told me in no uncertain terms to that I would be better off going somewhere else for a haircut as I didn't respect his trying to run a business. If you've never been late or missed an appointment, or if you place the same emphasis on getting a haircut as you would finding a cure for cancer or scheduling surgery, then this is the place for you. However, don't screw up because you might not be lucky enough to be asked to come back again. For most of my life I paid $50-plus for a good haircut. But since genetics has determined that will no longer be necessary, I now have less hair and more money in my pocket thanks to (genetics and) Rob's Chop Shop. This Fair Park institution is a great place for a "man's" haircut and Rob is just the man for the job. He is an expert in classic cuts including mine which is now the Jason Statham (a.k.a The Trainsporter). Instead of $60 per cut from an Uptown salon, I now pay $20 plus tip and for a superior technician. Rob is not only a coiffurier of the first order, but also a highly-respected rockabilly deejay who tours with The Stray Cats and a classic car enthusiast. He always has a great story to tell and he even makes his own hair tonic (Rob's Hip Hair Tonic) and pomade. How cool is that? I have tried the 150 dollar cut when I was in NYC on advice from an X - down to the 15 dollar Supercuts which WAS my go to previously. No frills quick in and out. I am a changed man. Forget trusting your hair to a chain like Super Cuts or Sports Clips and do you really think you have to go to a place like Toni & Guy to get a great cut or do you just feel like paying a lot of money. Don't even get me started on places like Floyd's Barbershop... with the manufactured atmosphere that is about authentic as the kid who thinks he is punk rock because he bought a Black Flag t-shirt at Hot Topics in the mall. While Rob can give you that duck-tail or pompadour that you always wanted, he can also cut just about any style. Plus Rob also makes his own line of grease and hair tonic and carries hard to find pomades.
