We were a walk in on Thursday which is an appointment day. Ray, the barber was setting up a gentleman in his chair when we arrived. He acknowledged us immediately and told us the days for walk ins and appointments which I explained did not state on his Yelp page. He said he would update it right away. Soooooo........ The gentleman in his chair chimes in and said, "Hey, no worries. You can have my spot and I'll go grab some lunch and come back." Wow! Ray has not problem with this so we continued with the haircut. He did an awesome job and was quick and thorough. We were happy and it was only $35 for haircut and beard trim. We were so thankful that we paid for the guy that left and went to lunch! Glad it all worked out. This is a no frills, homey, clean, and a great neighborhood barber. If you want to go to a place that will know you by name, go there for your next haircut. Overview: first time I went, I LOVED IT. Every time I went afterward, I was not satisfied. Be prepared to watch a movie on your phone while you wait to be served. Biggest pro is their quality. Biggest cons are their waittimes and inability to take card payments. Pros: I went there for the first time after moving to DFW because they had the best reviews in my area. I went on a Thursday around 2pm. There were maybe 1-2 people ahead of me and I got served in around 30min. I asked for a tapered fade with an inch off the top. They took literally more than an hour to cut my (male) hair (maybe 75 minutes). But when I saw it afterward, my hair looked AMAZING. The fade was SO GOOD. I had shown them a picture of what I wanted, and it looked even better than it. I paid $25 for that haircut, before tip, with my card. Cons: Waiting time: every time after that that I went to Brownie's, I waited SO LONG to cut my hair. Why? Because 1) they don't take appointments, 2) they take an hour to cut each person's hair, and they only have two barbers in the building, and 3) because they have really high demand, which means that usually there are 5+ people waiting ahead of you which means an average of a 2.5 HOUR WAIT. I once arrived at 4pm on Friday after work. I think they close around 6pm? I waited until literally 6:15 for them to START CUTTING MY HAIR and they finished close to 7pm. I left there after sitting there for 3 hours! The ONLY time I hadn't needed to wait was that first time during the middle of the day, and another time when I got there at 7:45am on a Saturday during a thunderstorm. I was hoping the thunderstorm would scare customers away and it worked! Consistency: after that first time, they never cut my hair amazingly again :( I didn't want to wait 3 hours to get a normal haircut I could get anywhere else Payment: the first few months I went there, they accepted card. Starting some time in 2019, they only accept cash. It's a major hassle, because you can't leave the barbershop and put your name in-line in the queue, if you leave you're off the queue. Which leads to... Being able to leave: I once walked in, wrote my name down on the paper write-in sheet that serves as the queue for the barbers. Knowing I wouldn't get served for 2 hours anyway, I asked if I could step out to walk to the Chipotle across the street to eat. They said no because it wouldn't be fair to the other customers. So I sat in one of their chairs and watched an entire Avengers movie while I was waiting. read more

I moved to the area not too long ago and I've been trying to find a good barber to go to.. on my way home from work, I looked up on yelp the closest barber shops and this one was right behind my house! Walked in and the wait was only 20 mins on a Friday. Very swanky little barbershop that has a lot of great collectibles all across the salon. My barber was Ray and he did a phenomenal job. I gave him what I wanted done to my hair and he delivered with no doubts. One thing I really enjoyed was that he had turned my chair away from the mirror... and at the end, when I turned around, I was more than impressed. Usually I have complaints about spots and some areas, but this was the first time I didn't have a single thing to fix. Will definitely be my normal spot for haircuts and go see Ray!!! read more

Came in here by chance after hopping around shops on a Friday and ending up disappointed by the other places I went to. After deciding to stick around, this has become the only shop I'll go to. I've had my hair cut by both Ray and Eddie. Each time I've come in, they've been polite, and given great cuts. I'm pretty particular about my hair, and I've never come out of here disappointed. Most recently, I was in here yesterday: another customer was in with his younger children, and the guys turned both TV's in the shop on to Cartoon Network to keep the kids entertained- a really extra, nice thing of them to do, and just one of the reasons I keep coming back. read more

Long before the hipsters claimed to "make everything old new again bro," Brownie's had been keeping the spirit alive for decades. Every barber in this fine establishment has more skill with a pair of clippers than your grandma had with food stamps during the Great Depression. Here's an example: on my most recent visit, I told Ray to "make me dapper. I gotta wear a tie to work now." The result was nothing but the most dapper hair cut that would make even Don Draper blush, all for $20. This is a shop of true professionals who know and love their craft. If you're looking for a solid fade or a legitimate beard trim, this is the place. Make sure you have time in case there is a wait, since it's walk-in only. I tried place after place to find someone that actually knew how to take proper care of facial hair. I have a long beard, but I don't want to look homeless and scraggly. Ray made it look clean, neat and full. Edward, ray's nephew is also extremely confident. You really can't go wrong. I have gone to the same stylist for ten years. He makes my hair right at my monthly hair cut. I use brownies for trims and cleanups in between my monthly cuts. And for 20 bucks?!? I usually just tip them ten on top. Still, after tip, at $30, I'm still getting more and paying less than an imitator like Floyd's. read more

Big fan. I've been going to Brownies for years and I love the shop. I've had my hair cut by both guys and they both do a great job. It's a no frills place, and that's what I love. You can go in, hang out and wait, and get a great hair cut where the guys remember your name, and always have great conversation. As for any negative review of this place... let me be real in my response: It's a freaking barber shop. If you expect to walk in and leave in 10 minutes: Go to pro-cuts. Sometimes there's a wait, sometimes not... if there's a wait, get over it and grab a magazine... No the place isn't always sparkling clean, but it's NEVER dirty by any means. If you're concerned with their being hair on the floor... get your hair cut at home. I do hair myself, mostly working with women, and I go here to get mine done. Coming from the industry: There will be hair before, during, and after you sweep the floors. Even if you sweep them twice, vacuum once, and mop twice... there will STILL be hair. It's a barber shop for crying out loud. As for most of the haircuts being short... I'm not sure what was expected from this guy. If you have a specialized haircut that's longer and has a specific style... why the hell are you going to a barber shop? That's exactly what a salon is for. I usually keep my hair short and cropped and these guys do a great job! After each cut they do a scalp massage, and I especially love that they shave the neck making my "edge-up" last longer. Since I moved to Dallas a few years ago, I've been hunting for the right barber shop. Looks like Brownies is that shop. I've tried a lot of shops, But Brownies has the right mix of atmosphere, style, price and quality. Both gentlemen there are great, but each has their own style. I have yet to pick a favorite. One shapes my beard using a series of guards, and the other no guards, but carefully, bit by bit, like shaping a bonsai tree. For $25 I can get a cut and a beard trim by a skilled barber in a relaxing, no frills environment where we can have a conversation, and I can actually describe what I want and ask questions without having to yell over the music. In 1984, when I first moved to Dallas, I found myself in need of a haircut. As a young man-about-town at the time, I asked around among my new friends for their recommendations. "BROWNIE'S" They all told me. Considering that my friends were some of the hippest people in Dallas at the time, I assumed "Brownie's" was some kind of unfortunately named unisex place with flitting hairdressers, pounding rock music, and juicy neighborhood gossip. I could not have been more wrong. And my friends could not have been more right. Brownie's was located then on Oak Lawn Avenue near Lemmon Avenue (where some shoe repair shop is now). Later, about the time Eatzi's opened across the street and rent skyrocketed, they finally settled in on Lemmon Avenue, across from the deservedly-famous Mia's Mexican restaurant, not very far from their original location. Imagine my surprise back in 1984 when at Brownie's I found a throw-back to barber shops of yore! An older gentleman commanded the first chair and a much younger man worked the second chair. That younger guy was the son of the older man. The boy was about 18 or so and he cut my hair that day under the careful eye of his dad. The shop was plain, masculine, welcoming and professional. And it smelled wonderfully of talc and razor strops. That kid was RAY VASQUEZ and he still cuts my hair today at Brownie's, about a quarter of a century later. That's a lot of haircuts. I was a client when he got his first car and then his second, and then a blushing bride, and then the birth of his kids (and even the recording a CD of Mexican music ~ he's a talented singer and musician!). And Ray has seen me through times both tough (when I had to ask for a haircut on credit when I found myself job hunting and growing desperate) and wonderful (when I finally got married and he groomed me for the wedding pictures). Sadly, Ray's dad passed a few months ago. The thousands of us who knew him feel the loss. Last time I was there a white floral cross occupied the first chair, Ray continued to work the second chair and his nephew, Eddie, a younger man who joined them a few years ago, knows what he's doing at a third chair. The place is strewn with a selection of rare and interesting "1950's stuff," like photos of outrageously finned cars and Elvis and stunning black-&-white portraits of Dallas skylines from the past, including one of a relative working on the rising skeleton of a downtown skyscraper. And their magazine offerings (while you wait, if necessary) is unmatched! A selection that will astound you, including ALL the favorites... All of this is to say that you cannot go wrong at Brownie's. These are folks serious about the quality of their work, who care about you, who bring you into their "family" gently and warmly. It's a MAN'S place that welcomes "weekend dads" and their sons, a variety of men from the nearby gay community, rich guys from nearby Highland Park, and any other guy in a 20-mile radius who appreciates one hell of a good barber shop and the casual friendliness of those who recognize you and appreciate your business. For those of us who want nothing fancy in the way of a barber shop (including no rat-tail-comb-waving victims-of-fashion flailing away at your head while dancing to Lady Gaga), BROWNIE'S is the place for you. No appointments, no calling ahead, just walk in and be greeted by name! Last time I checked, a perfect haircut exactly to your specifications cost $20 (plus a $5 tip if you're a responsible citizen). It doesn't get any better or any less expensive than this. You'll come out a handsomer man. (Ray is a man who knows LOTS of "off-color" jokes, by the way, which he is happy to murmur into your ear while snipping away at renegade hairs. See if you have a joke that can top any of his.) Oh, and about the name of the place: Ask 'em. It dates from 1929 and has had a number of owners, leading up to Ray's leadership today, inherited from his dad. I really like this shop... but after waiting for more than 30 minutes yesterday (in what I thought was the queue) for the particular barber I'd used before (and was very pleased with), he walked over and said, "Oh, sorry; I have an appointment now. You're welcome to keep waiting until after I'm finished with him." Some of the reviews had said they don't take reservations; and I'd actually just heard him tell someone on the phone they don't take reservations. Well, I guess they do - even if they say they don't. Very disappointed with what I thought was a good, old-fashioned barber shop. Also, they no longer take credit/debit cards. I really, really wanted to like this business. They cut my hair when I first moved to Dallas, and make no mistake, they do a damn good job. They seem like a well established business with an active clientele. The problem is the lack of predictability. Since getting my cut here the second time, I have attempted to return for a cut three times. Each time, only one of the barbers was working, and the wait was 4-6 people deep. The gentlemen are thorough, and last time, I waited for about 90 minutes while 2 customers had been helped and a third was getting in the chair. There is only so much work e-mail to catch up on and flipping through magazines one can do before getting the overwhelming feeling of "I am wasting time." If you have a couple of hours free and don't mind the wait, bring work to do, some headphones (or be prepared to watch TV), and tough it out. You will end up with a great haircut, for sure. But if time is of the essence, you will end up as frustrated as I was. read more
