We had a excellent experience on our four hour excursion with an Island Boat Rentals 16' RiverHawk…read more Scott gave us a brief but thorough period of instruction about the boat, and navigation system. He also offered some suggestions for islands to visit, things to see, places orcas might be visible, and locations for public docks and restrooms. The boat was more than roomy for my family of four plus beagle, and had comfortable seats. The boat, and navigation worked flawlessly, and we had a great time! I highly recommend this experience over a chartered tour. You are your own captain, and you four legged family members are welcome. Pointer: Force your family to dress warm. Mine underestimated the cold factor despite my warnings. Even when the weather is beautiful, it's cold out on the water when underway.

At first this business owner seems like a nice enough guy. We rented a boat not know much about…read moredriving a boat. The day looked like it was easy and calm but as we headed out to seat the water was great super choppy and we felt unsafe. We turned around and headed back to the mainland. When we returned he first said everything looked ok and we were good to go. As we were jumping into our car the owner runs up to us and says hey you guys broke a piece of the propeller and we need you to fix it. It will cost between $500-$3,000. We were really confused because we didn't hit anything!!!! The we asked what the insurance policy was and he said he didn't have any. So us not knowing much we google this "so called part" it only cost $113. After being told it would cost $3,000 I sprinted into a local attorneys office and told him what had happened and he quickly shared that it was illegal for us to be driving a boat unsupervised anyway and that he was aloud to even be charging for a service like that. You can not operate, unless under the direct onboard supervision of uscg liscesned captain, a boat with more than 15hp in wa state. Be very careful this company is NOT legal and will take advantage you!!

The marina at Roche Harbor Resort isn't cheap (but interestingly, it's about the same to moor here…read moreat it is to moor at the much humbler marina at nearby Deer Harbor), but they pack the experience with so much value that it is actually a 'must visit' stop for the discriminating yachtsman. THE ROSES: Oh my, where to start? The staff (which will cheerfully help you dock and leave) are young, friendly, efficient, and - god help me - very easy on the eyes. I get a feeling working here is a very desirable summer gig, because they seem to be able to hire the 'cream of the crop' of the local (?) youth. The physical plant (docks, power, water, onshore amenities) are in perfect working order and impeccably clean. What really puts RHM over the top is all the little extras. Want to do some grilling dockside? They will deliver a top-quality (Saber) gas grill to your slip on request. Complimentary pump outs (via the 'Phecal Phreak' Pumpout service) are also available on request. Visiting yachtsmen receive on arrival a lovely 'welcome packet' which includes vouchers to a complimentary wine reception, and a punchcard that gives you a free RHM hat if you visit four of the onshore stores. The marina has a fairly well-stocked grocery store, wine merchant, multiple clothing and gift shops, and both casual and fine dining options. There is also a boatyard/marine mechanic (Phil Brooks), and a small marine chandlery. THE THORNS: None worth mentioning. THE VERDICT: Roche Harbor Marina is one of the - if not THE - premiere yachting destination in the Pacific Northwest. While not bargain travel, RHM delivers probably the most 'bang for the buck' of any marina in the region. Very highly recommend.

We've moored here many times over the years and love this place for the following reasons:…read more --phekal freak has been entertaining us for over a decade--and it's a great service --lots of docking help--this place can be windy, so help with lines is always appreciated --great docks, showers and fuel services --cute but expensive grocery store --great gathering places for dock parties, complete with shade and grills --awesome eye for safety with fire extinguishers and ladders everywhere The one unawesome thing? Massive wooden cleats that are hard to work and oddly spaced. Some are broken and basically useless. That's a valid concern but it's the only one I have about this wonderful marina.

I unfortunately hit a rock North of Van Isle marina this summer. It was a holiday Sunday but Martin…read moreat Vector Yacht responded within minutes and sent a crew down to do an emergency haul out. He even gave us his car to get to our pick up place to get home to Seattle. The damage was very significant with a complete loss of the stbd Zeus pod and hull damage. Todd took over from there. Obtaining parts and a new pod was a challenge but throughout the process the communications were excellent. When repairs were complete I flew up to pick up the boat. The repairs were absolutely perfect. In addition the boat had been immaculately cleaned after a lot of repair work. The professionalism and quality of repair work deserves more the 5 stars!! Hauled out for bottom painting and reinstall of a fresh water pump…read more Once back at slip, the water pump was functioning poorly and the Espar would not start. Ended up having a 'cracked ' water pump rebuilt by a reliable business on the same street. However the Espar would not turn on. Vector, via its 'Service' Manager gave runaround re it being a dealer and no one was available to check it out. Turns out the reason for its failure is the Vector installer(s) of the Pars Pump (I assume in an attempt to increase pressure ) decided top off the starboard water tank. It wasn't until a trustworthy Ben attempted to prime the fuel line to unit ,then opened the aft fuel tank (exclusively used for the Espar) to discover it was a 50/50 mix of water and diesel. Thus further $1600 spent to repair faulty Pars Pump and still have a non working Espar heater and a 35 gallon fuel tank full with a water/diesel mix.
