I was admittedly nervous to get my haircut somewhere new (been seeing the same lady forever) but heard good things about this place. I booked a cut with Ashley, and she was wonderful! I showed her pictures of what I was looking for and she matched it very well. I got Kayla. OMG! She did an amazing job. I only get cuts I don't color my hair. It is one of the best hair cuts I have ever had. I am 60 with white hair. So many stylist want to give me that old woman cut, which is why I have such a hard time finding a good stylist. I have naturally curly hair and it can be difficult even for the best, especially if they have never laid eyes on me before. It is such a beautiful cut. Just what I had in my mind that I wanted. After readings many positive reviews from this salon, I knew I had to get my hair done here, so i made an appointment a week ago for today, and exactly at 2:00 my hairstylist (Haley) was ready for me and I was ready to go! She is by far the coolest hairstylist I've ever met, she asked me how I styled my hair and how i wanted it cut, and she took care of everything. She was very professional but fun and very easy to get along with. Best hairstylist everrrr! She left my hair feeling so light, soft and curly which is exactly how I wanted it. This place is incredible. Kales has cut my hair twice now and both times I have been super happy. She listens to what I want, gives suggestions, is very knowledgeable about all things hair and is fun to talk to about things not hair. She is also a curly hair guru and brought my 10 year old daughter's curls back to life with a simple cut and a bit of product. The salon itself is clean, with fun decor, and nice artwork for sale. I have hair that is very difficult to get color into and some thinning going on (booo hisss). In the winter my hair is flat a tatat. Laura provided me a wonderful array of colors to choose from and the one we selected is perfect. As I lean into the blonding days, it is especially important to me to keep any hint of orange out.This color worked PERFECTLY the FIRST time. I really like the cut -- nice layering and texturing work. The length of the cut was - happily - longer than I expected, and nicely frames my face. I was well-pleased that no ceramic heat styling tool was used. As it is winter and my hair is missing the body and wave provided naturally by the Carolina humidity, volume was added with a round boar bristle brush. All the detail and care that went into the color, wash, cut, and style was precisely what I was looking for. I find Laura to be very talented. The products are perfect, the music was just right, the cup o joe fabu. The change will do me good. Already booked another appointment. read more

Went here about 2 months ago and never got around to rating this place. Went to a newer stylist who failed to even get my hair completely wet, never mind lather in the shampoo. The best part about getting a hair cut is them washing your hair for 10 minutes. Not the case here. I purposely didn't wash my hair (and told her so) and so I was super greasy after she lathered in all kinds of oily products once dry. She was so timid with cutting my hair I actually had to stop her to make sure she didn't screw up. It ended up turning out uneven anyway. Coming from a very high end organic/green salon in south Florida, this did NOT meet my expectations. This was a hipster too-cool-for-you salon that really didn't give a S*** about customer service. I've gone here for 5 years and I only get my hair cut about once a year so I always get someone different. The first 3 haircuts I got here were great, but the last 2 haircuts I got here were decidedly not, with the most recent one being one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I mean, I get a hair trim with layers and side bangs on long straight hair. It's hard to screw that up. It's not like I go in for a pixie cut or color even. If you look at pictures of me over the past 14 years, somehow stylists around the country have been able to recreate the same look. However, the last time I went to RPS, my stylist cut my hair with a middle part even though I told her I do a side part. She told me that's how it's cut, so I believed her. Here I am two months later with one side of my hair still about an inch longer than the other side. Even my boyfriend's father noticed it and he's not exactly observant. Somehow, she cut my bangs wrong and they never looked right and then they grew out in about a week so that I somehow now have two tendrils of bangs on either side of my head, which looks ridiculous and effectively means I don't have any bangs covering my enormous forehead-the reason I get bangs at all. I know they do complimentary bang trims but they're the ones who screwed my bangs up in the first place-I'm not trying to provide a second go at it. She also told me she couldn't really layer my hair even though every single person who has ever cut my hair throughout my entire life has been able to. I effectively look like I haven't had my hair cut in months. It's just hanging, uneven, with zero style or volume. At this stage, my hair has usually grown out beautifully, hence why I get a haircut once a year. It already looks like I haven't cut it in about a year. Overall, it's a real mixed bag here. If you find someone you like, note their name, because some of the people who work here are really not good. I think this was the last straw for me and I'll be looking for recommendations for a new place, which sucks because I used to really like it here. But my haircut isn't hard and it's not like they are charging $20. RPS needs to do WAY more vetting of their stylists. I got this haircut two months ago. I'm writing this review now because this is how much it has bugged me to see my hair in the mirror EVERY SINGLE DAY since then. read more

I had my first RPS appointment a year ago and been a huge fan since. Laura is wonderful - she gives fresh-looking, easy-to-maintain haircuts and has a nice, relaxed attitude. My hair has never looked better, and I used to pay *much* more for haircuts. I also love the way they've decorated the salon - it has a cool mix of furniture and lots of good natural light. It's a really pleasant space, and I'm so glad RPS is adding to the growing contingent of vibrant downtown businesses. Love this place! All of the stylists do an excellent job, and they are friendly (but not overly friendly in the oh-my-gosh-i'd-just-like-to-get-my-haircut-please kind of way). My only complaint about this place is that it is really hard to get a last minute trim if you need it spur of the moment. I have been going to this salon for years and when my regular stylist left, I decided to try someone else. Yesterday, I received the worst haircut I can remember in probably 15 years. Everything I recommended was ignored and the exact opposite was done. I have short, fine hair and I advised I want to look feminine, I do not want any shelfs, I want the cut to blend and I was told ok, ok, ok. Well, I have scissor makes all over and a definite shelf appearance. Nothing at all blends. I am really embarrassed to go out. Last night I met friends for dinner and first words out of their mouths were "what happened to hour hair". It is a total disaster and will take weeks to correct. On top of that, I had to pay for parking, because I wasn't given enough on my parking card. read more

So happy I switched salons to Rock Paper Scissors. I was convinced my previous stylist was the best one I've ever found, but my experiences with Kales have definitely changed my mind. I'm a natural blonde but have always wanted to find just the right tone of super icy highlights, and no one has ever mastered it until Kales worked her magic. After taking another risk and going for the unicorn/mermaid fashion color highlight at my next visit, Kales did a fantastic job and was incredibly patient throughout the 4+ hour process. She even allowed me to come back in to fix a few strands that didn't turn out how I wanted at no charge. To top everything off, the salon is clean, bright, and in a cool industrial/warehouse style with super friendly front desk staff and fantastic products. I only docked a star because it is not the most affordable salon in the area, but I happily pay the premium. read more

Suzanne was my stylist and I'm so impressed and happy with how my hair turned out! I'm new to the area and used yelp to find this adorable salon. Suzanne is new to the salon, but don't let that worry you; She has 20 years of experience and that is very obvious! Suzanne has the most uplifting and bubbly personality. She is so sweet, professional, and listens to everything you ask. I got balayage highlights and a hair cut which both turned out absolutely beautiful. She pays very close attention to detail and also explains exactly what she's doing to your hair BEFORE doing it which made me extremely comfortable. She also did a fantastic job of styling it afterwards which is no easy task! The only issue I had was that I specifically told the receptionist to book me extra time for my wildly thick hair, and the receptionist didn't book an adequate amount of time. No fault on Suzanne's part since this was my first time with her, but I HIGHLY suggest you stress with the receptionist that you need a lot of extra time if your hair is wildly thick and crazy like mine. I have very difficult curly hair and have had more than my fair share of terrible haircuts. The receptionist who answered the phone was very nice and helpful and was able to get me an appointment in my time range with Abby, who the receptionist told me charges $35 for shampoo, cut, and blow dry. I wanted to take weight off my hair and add texture without the typical curly frizz that tends to occur after any kind of "layering." Abby asked all the right questions, informed me of the products she was using and their benefits without being pushy, and was easy to talk to. I absolutely loved the end result and was expecting to pay more than the original $35 because of the time Abby spent and the sheer amount of hair I have, but $35 it was. Overall an incredible value - I can honestly say I have spent over twice the price for lesser experiences and will definitely return to Rock Paper Scissors/ Abby. read more

After reading all the fabulous reveiws I had to try it. I just moved here from San Diego and rely on yelp for many things. However, this was one of the worst hair cuts and dyes that I have ever had! I told her to keep my lengh because I am trying to grow it out...she cut off 2 inches!! I asked her for a very specific highlight and she gave me generic foil highlights. After that I asked her to curl my hair with a curiling iron because I had an event to go to that evening. She didn't even know how to do that! I had curling crimps all over. I had to go home and dye my hair one color and then style my hair. Maybe I should open a salon because I did a better job than someone with 18 years experience! I was excited to get my hair cut here as I had read the good reviews. I drove through a rain storm and couldn't find a parking spot so I walked in @ 5:14 according to my phone. I tried 2-3 times to call and ask where I could park, but no one answered. The receptionist was on the phone so she made me sit and said I'll be with you in a minute. After a few minutes she asked my name them said oh... it's 5:16 and we have a 15 min late policy? Umm, really? So, the hair stylist came out and asked what exactly I wanted done because I was apparently 1 minute too late to get a haircut I guess? I told her and she explained since I was a minute late she wouldn't be able to wash and dry my hair... I'd have to pick one? Seriously? I was 1 minute late because the receptionist was on the phone at 5:14. I went for a dry cut but should have just walked out at that point. The haircut took about 15 minutes I was seriously home but 6:10 and I live 25 minute drive away. The haircut was nothing great. I just won't be back which is sad. I chose this salon based on reviews that I had read on yelp. I would love to say that I got the best haircut of my life, but I didn't. I showed my stylist, Jenny, a picture of me with a haircut that I liked and asked her to give me that cut. The haircut I got looks like I went to Super Cuts. She took off more length than I wanted, eliminated all layers and made the front of my hair significantly shorter than the back. I'm embarrassed to say it looks like I am rocking a mini-mullet. I think Jenny could tell that i was less than pleased because she told me I could come back in the next couple of days if I wanted anything changed. Jenny was a perfectly nice person and interesting to talk to, but she can't cut hair. Why would I go back to have my haircut "fixed" by the person who messed it up? read more

I am not a girly girl. I go to the salon like twice a year... if that, but I have been to RPS 3 times now and have genuinely enjoyed the experience each time--which is a feat--three hours in a salon sounds like my own personal hell. But Jenny does a great job interpreting my pathetic excuse for an explanation of what I want, and has helped me pick great colors. I have difficult hair--thin and frizzy. She makes it look great, and doesn't make me feel guilty for being so lazy about taking care of it. I have been to other stylists who scold me, and I haven't returned to them. She also doesn't push products. In fact I had to push her to suggest products. She is a sweetheart and interesting person to talk to, which makes the time fly. The rest of the staff is also friendly and professional from what I can tell. Yes, it is a bit pricey by Durham standards, but its worth it. Plus, I'm from NYC, so everything is cheap to me here! My husband also loves their new barber shop. so its now a family affair. I really wont go anywhere else at this point. Yay, Jenny! read more

After woefully neglecting my hair for an entire year after moving here from Texas, and my mother insisting I do something with it before my grandmother's big 80th birthday bash, I decided it was time for me to bite the bullet and find a stylist in Durham. I'm a little weird about my hair. I'd rather go months without a cut/color than risk getting a bad cut/color at a cheap salon, and I had a dollar amount in mind that I felt would be fair for good quality. After reading through reviews on Yelp for a number of salons, I got the feeling Rock, Paper, Scissors might be my kind of place. I was totally right. The girl who answered the phone was extremely friendly and really took the time to make sure she understood what I needed done and to book a block of time that would be adequate for all of it (I had been using black dye out of the box and would need that lifted out in order to do color and highlights - then the cut). She even called me back a couple of days later to see if I'd be willing to come in for a brief consultation with the stylist to make sure they could do it all in one sitting. I went in for my consultation and found out Jenni, one of the owners, would be doing my hair. I was an hour early, and she went ahead and sat me anyway, even though I wasn't expecting her to. I'm one of those people who prefers to take suggestions from my stylist rather than come in with a picture and say "do that," so it went pretty quickly. My appointment was for four hours, and I have to say I was totally impressed by how Jenni took the full four hours and I never got the feeling of being rushed or a burden like in other places. I've had stylists double-book long appointments before and go back and forth between me and another client. This didn't happen here. I am SO happy with the way my hair looks. Jenni was able to lift the black out and give me a gorgeous new color (deep brown with subtle copper and caramel highlights) without damaging my hair. She was also able to work with my natural curl to give me a cut that's super cute yet low maintenance, which is exactly what I asked for. As far as pricing, I think it was beyond fair for the length of time and the quality of work. It was very much on par with what I was paying in Dallas and Houston. That being said, if you're used to going to the types of places you can pop into without an appointment, the price tag could come as a bit of a shock. My 13-year-old daughter loves my hair and is begging me to take her there for a cut now. I will definitely be back. read more

I just relocated to the area after being overseas. I made an appointment with Courtney and its the best thing that happened to my hair in a long time. I showed up with blonde that had been over highlighted from too many full highlights with scraggly ends from too much texturizing. Courtney took time to listen to what I wanted and discussed in depth what she was going to do to get me back to a pretty blonde. She did a great job. My blonde is more natural, pretty and it complements my skin tone just right. The cut is so perfect even I can style it to look like the "just left the salon" look. That's a first for me! I have a really good fake smile. I bring it out at family reunions, most gift exchanges, and definitely hair salons. It's just hard. It's their art, (their tip), but it's MY HEAD! I have to walk around with their handiwork encircling my face! That's why I reached up behind me, grabbed Laura's hands, and in a voice of complete surprise said :holy sh**, I actually like it!" It was incredible. I have super curly, dry, unmanageable hair, and I don't use any products. I recently took scissors to it myself in a misguided fit of late night bathroom boredom. Had a blowout here with Abby before attending a friend's wedding. She was running a little late, but was very apologetic and still got me out in plenty of time! She listened carefully to what I wanted and took the time to do soft curls throughout my hair. It was raining when I left, so she also gave me a plastic cap to protect my new 'do. The blowout pricing compared to other places in Durham is really reasonable ($30 +tip). I'd definitely come back for another blowout or to try another service. read more

They said Emma and Emmy were booked, and recommended Haley, who is new at the salon, having moved from Austin. It's always scary going to a new place, but I am so glad I took the chance. Haley is absolutely terrific in every way -- she listened carefully to me, analyzed what was wrong with my old haircut, and gave me a great cut that looks terrific.
