Or maybe just evidence that I'm seriously that loco. Anyways.... Jenni is awesome. I will never cheat on Jenni so long as she's around and I'm in Durham. That's that. She's my girl, and that's EXTREMELY hard to find as we all know. I will allow her to see others, but just remember, she's mine. Why is she awesome? Well let's see: - She squeeze me in to trim my bangs whenever I just drop in - She's actually pretty interesting to talk to - she's in a rock band - she knows what she's doing, which is good, cause i have no idea what i'm doing and she can take the crazy talk going on in my head and make it look awesome - she's attentive to every detail The products are also quite awesome. why? - the hair coloring products don't make my hair smell like a butt for days afterwards - my hair doesn't dry out, it's never been so healthy! it's shiny and strong :) - the color lasts a long time. So, as you can see RPP rocks socks. But if you're not convinced I think the fact that they brew and serve their own beer is spectacular. and if you're visually bored, they have art to look at. seriously. try it. read more

140-character review: Awesome place, good brews, reasonable pricing for a gourmet haircut. Never tried to cut my hair with rocks or paper yet, though. #misleading No, really, though. I love this place. I have the great luxury of being a terrible procrastinator, so I've pretty much gotten a haircut from everyone who has ever worked here (last-minute "whoever's available" sort of appointments), and never been disappointed. I like that I can go in with only a vague idea what the hell I want done to my hair, see a completely new stylist, and still always come out with a great haircut. While you wait (which is minimal to never, unless you're a walk-in), there's beverages and pinball and an above-average magazine stock to keep you occupied. Rotating selection of beers brewed by the husband of an owner. Some I've loved, some I haven't (not a hophead, I'll admit), but all decent. And free. Moreover, if you get your hairs cut by anyone apart from the owners, your cut is generally around $35 (plus tip. PLEASE tip your stylist). Dude, a haircut at the JC Penney salon is $25-35, and they usually bleed a few extra dollars from you for holding a blowdryer within 6 feet of your head. Supercuts may be $6 sometimes, but I've had better cuts from a Flowbee. If I had to dig for something to gripe about, it's that my haircuts are generally nigh on an hour. I actually appreciate the hour-length sessions as a way to relax and have some conversation and/or quiet, but others may have an issue with carving out a bit of extra time. So what's holding you back? Full-size beer + excellent haircut + wash and dry bundled in + pinball is a way better value at $35-45 than any budget haircut place, and is far cheaper than many of the other high-end salons around the Triangle. read more

I've been getting my hair cut here regularly since late 2017. I've had a great experience at each appointment. Kales does a wonderful job keeping my short bob looking perfect. The atmosphere is great, and the staff are super friendly. Plus, the prices are reasonable! With a great location and parking just across the street, what more could you want? read more

Having come to see a stylist (Emily) that recently joined Rock, Paper, Scissors, I only just started coming to this salon. I was happily surprised: the salon is warm and cozy, with a great ambiance and staff. As for stylists, I cannot say enough about Emily. Her color is always spot on, her cuts are consistently flattering, and her company is warm and welcoming. She is quite honestly, the best thing that could have happened to my hair. Emily is also super knowledgeable about hair and products. In the past, things I buy typically end up in the rubbish bin after they don't work. But Emily knows her products (and RPS sells an awesome line), and takes the time to explain what it will do, and why it would/would not work for you. She helps you pick out where your money is best spent - and shoots straight in her advice. I feel forever grateful to her for introducing me to a product that resolved an issue I had wrestled with for years - and spent countless dollars on trying to resolve. Emmy. Yep, she's the only reason why I go here. Amazing haircut after amazing haircut - I've never been happier with a stylist. She listens to me, offers suggestions and the quality of the cut is always wonderful. On top of that, she's personable and outgoing. It's a pleasure to sit in the chair for an hour. The salon itself is hip - with exposed brick wall with rotating art shows. They also serve beer! Beer and a haircut? How can those *ever* be a bad combination? read more

Rock Paper Scissors has become my 'go to' place for haircuts. I've been going there for over a year and have always felt very taken care during every visit. Making an appointment is always easy and Kelsey always calls with a friendly reminder the day before. I live with biking distance so their downtown location is perfect. Now to the important part, the actual haircuts! Christina cuts my hair and has always done a wonderful job despite my often vague requests. I don't know the language of hair styling so I'm left with requesting a haircut that looks 'cool.' On that front Christina has consistently delivered. read more

Sometimes I hate getting what I pay for. In this case, it was a GREAT haircut that means I likely will never step into a Supercuts-like salon again. The cut I got from Yumi was over twice as much as I'm used to paying (before tip), but at least three times better (scientifically speaking). I showed her a picture, and I will venture to say that she gave me an IDENTICAL 'do. Plus, the price doesn't seem so bad when you learn that they give free bang and /or neck trims between haircuts to existing customers. The space is lovely. While I waited, I sipped on coffee and flipped through a book called "Bad Hair" which I think might be better off if it was called "The Hairstyle Handbook for Hipsters" instead. (Is it bad if I thought a couple of the looks were cute?) The one-star deduction is for the wait. It seems that all the Yelpers love Rock, Paper, Scissors. I followed my stylist Jenean, the owner, from her old digs in Chapel Hill. I love this salon. It just has a good vibe about it. The staff is friendly but not fake and the environs are eclectic and funky. But, let's talk about hair. Hair is a very personal thing and finding a great hairstylist is often a great quest, not undertaken lightly or you may end up looking like Frenchie from Grease (can you hear Frankie Avalon in the background, I digress). Jenean is great at styling my almost straight hair. When I first went to her I was growing it out from a really short cut for my wedding. She did exactly what I asked with a little flair after we discussed some options. Then in March, not long after RPS opened I went in to cut off all my long hair in hops that this would speed up time and make spring come on strong. I went for a mid-length cut that Jenean suggested after a discussion about if I was really ready for the summer do. The cut was great and next week I am going back for that summer cut. Woohoo! While I am there, I might have a beer and check out the art. read more

When I found out I was moving to Austin to take a job, I literally thought about how much I was going to miss Jenean, and how was I ever going to find someone to replace her? That's how important she's been in my life. From high maintenance Bettie Page bangs, to cutting off 8 inches of hair at a time, she's never told me no and has always made me look like a Carolina dime. Add me to the list of people who love this place. While the selection of salons is limited in this town, I was pretty confident in making a trip to RPS after reading the excellent reviews from my fellow Yelpers. I made an appointment with Emma, who was newish to the salon, to take care of my roots and split ends (I'd been avoiding going to the salon since I'd moved, found a place, and had my stylist move on me - how rude). The vibe at RPS is awesome - free beer, if you're into it, awesome awesome music (Roky Erickson, are you KIDDING ME?!), and friendly people. Alysia is always welcoming, and the staff is generally cheerful. Emma is a sweetheart and she does a great job cutting and coloring my hair. She's easy to talk to, so I never have to worry about awkward silences or forced conversation. I'm looking forward to my appointment in the next couple of weeks! Everything is great about this place! I'm new to Durham, and I was so happy to find my new hair place. I will definitely only go here. The atmosphere is very inviting. Joel cut my hair, and I love it! I Have long, wavy layers and he was able to cut in a way that would look good if I blew it out straight or let the hair go wavy (like on a humid day when I have no choice). Maybe it was my mistake for not asking for a more experienced stylist. My cut was fine, all I wanted was a trim anyway. The problem was the color. I asked for half head balayage​ the same shade of blonde balayage I had growing out already. I was settling in for at least a two hour session as has been the case every other time I've had this done. I knew something was wrong when my stylist was done in about 20 minutes. I went along with it thinking maybe she was just speedy. Once my hair was dry, I couldn't really tell in the salon lighting and it was only when I got home I realized this was not what I wanted. I had about 10 (I counted) wispy strawberry blonde (almost red) streaks on one side of my head. I specifically said I did not do well with warm tones. I did email and they were responsive but insisted I see the same styling to fix the issue. Why would I want to do that if I had a poor experience? I ask for a reduced charged because what I received​ was definitely not what I paid for but my only option was to see the same styling again. I opted out, unfortunately,​​ it was an expensive lesson learned. The search for a new salon continues. read more

I dropped into Susan's chair in the midst of a frantic week that included traveling to Raleigh/Durham for a wedding in my boyfriends family and me being in dire need of a hair appointment. I'm extremely hesitant with finding a new stylist but after seeing photos and reviews of her work I booked myself an appointment and I am so glad I took the chance! She patiently listened to my hair history, goals, and made me feel comfortable immediately. She even let me take a work call (I really hate to be that person but it happened) while she masterfully danced around me blending highlights into hand painted balayage. My color is exactly what I wanted even now, a month later! If you're thinking about seeing Susan, quit thinking and go do it - you can thank me later, or just thank her. read more

Let me start by saying I wish I could give 4.5 stars. I decided to get my hair cut last minute on a Saturday morning. So I got on Yelp (I've been going to Fantastic Sam's & wanted something better) and looked at reviews. I called a couple other places and no one had openings, but when I called Rock Paper Scissors they fit me right in! I was able to park for free (since it was Sat) in the lot right across the st & had no wait for my stylist. She was super nice & seemed to know exactly what I wanted. (I think her name was Laura? So bad with names..) My hair looked awesome when she finished with it (my friends said the best cut I'd ever had!) Unfortunately I have still not quite figured out the round brush on my own, so it's not quite as wonderful as she did it, but it's still a great cut. My only issues were that I had to do some touch up trims (I end up doing this after every haircut, so not unusual) and I heard no mention of the homebrews they apparently have (though it was noon & early for drinks I guess.) Overall, RPS was a very trendy little place with cool brick walls, artwork everywhere, friendly stylists, and reasonable prices ($40 for a cut.) Five stars is hard for me to give out for salons unless everything is absolutely perfect, so consider my 4(.5) a fabulous review! I will be going back! read more

So, you may remember Emmy, whose praises I sang in my five-star review of the Aveda Institute of Chapel Hill; well, she now works at Rock Paper Scissors and today I enjoyed a completely fabulous---comme d'habitude---cut from her in this great new(ish) space on E. Chapel Hill St. in the Addison building in the heart of downtown Durham. Today's cut was on the house as well, since Emmy is a stylist in training till Fall and asked me in as a hair model to prove to the owners that she's got the goods (she does, you guys; she really does. If you need a referral card, PM me). RPS does cuts and color; no perms or other chemical-style treatments, no spa treatments. The atmosphere is great: high wooden beam ceilings, walls of exposed brick, decorated with original art that is changed out every few months or so (they have an event each time with wine, so be sure to check it out), and the whole space is flooded with beautiful, natural light. As for the homebrews the others have mentioned: well, they're fantastic. I tried a double-brew IPA hybrid today, served to me in a vintage glass, and it was crisp and clean and refreshing: perfect for summer. RPS also offers free wifi and uses color from Davines---a sustainable Italian company---and carries Sidlab---a Portland, Oregon-based company with earth-friendly, sulfite- and paraben-free haircare products---making them one of only three North Carolina salons to do so. And they've got a cool referral system: take some of their cards, write your name on the back, and pass them out to your friends. They keep your cards on file and, after you get three referrals, you get to choose from 50% off a product of your choice or 20% off a service of up to an $85 value. Great location, too: just next to Rue Cler and kickass indie record company, Merge Records. One-hour parking is at the bottom of the alley, two-hour parking on the surrounding blocks (Mangum, etc.), and they'll validate your parking in the deck just across the street (which, incidentally, is only $0.60/hour weekdays, free on weekends). They accept walk-ins and they're open till 8:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, so it makes swinging by after work a cinch. It's definitely worth checking out! read more

Yay! My hair is back to being short after growing it out for a friend's recent wedding, and I love it. Thanks to Helena K's recommendation, I booked Emmy for an appointment at RPS. Emmy was really attentive to what I wanted and cut my hair beyond my expectations. I have pretty thick hair, so she ended up adding a lot of layers at the back to thin it out and add more texture and movement to it. I'll definitely be going back to Emmy again and making her my regular stylist. Since she is still doing an apprenticeship until the end of the month, she made an extra effort to be meticulous and really perfect the cut...I left the salon after two hours of being there! No complaints, though, as I was really happy with how it turned out...and better yet, it was FREE (thanks, Helena!). No more searching for a great stylist- I've found one! read more

I went to RPS a while back after getting tired of driving to Raleigh for a haircut. I chose to come here due to the great reviews here on Yelp and I was not disappointed! I got an appointment with Laura for both a cut and a color. After parking in the garage across the street (the salon will validate it for you!), I went in and it was not long before I was in the chair (I skipped their homemade brews that they offer to clients). Laura listened to what I wanted and conversed with me about various topics throughout my appointment. She really took the time to ensure that all my grays (yes, I have them, ahhh) were covered and I have a lot of hair, so this is no easy task. The cut was great and I left feeling great!!! read more

I'm new to Durham and have tried a couple other salons, none of which I liked. I just went to Joel for partial (blonde) highlights and absolutely love them! He did a great consultation with me and made some recommendations, which I appreciated. The highlights are fabulous and the blow out was great! I have very curly hair which can be tough but he was extremely thorough and I'm beyond happy that I've finally found a great stylist. Will DEFINITELY be back! BTW... I just left this salon with a fantastic cut. Emmy is amazing and kind and talented. She was able to create a cut that added volume to my hair where I needed it while framing my face perfectly. I feel so lucky to have been able to get an appointment last minute. Everyone at the salon I encountered was very nice. The music and beer is also great. ***UPDATE 8/22/12*** (review went from 5 star to 4 star) Unfortunately the last time I went here, Emmy was away. I understand that she has a life and other important things to tend to. I gladly accepted an appointment with a replacement in May whose name I can't remember. She was very nice, but my hair came out a bit darker and redder than I anticipated. My cut was also a bit more blunt than I hoped, and it was uneven. I mentioned this while in the chair, and she snipped a little more off. After I paid, I walked to my car and the one side was still longer. I walked back in and mentioned this, and she snipped some more off. When I got home I was so frustrated that I just fixed it myself and wished that Emmy would return soon! I followed Laura (one of the co-owners) from her previous salon to RPSS. She is so sweet and always does a wonderful job cutting & coloring my hair. The best part: she knows what works for me, which makes it so easy to trust her. I love the atmosphere of the salon. Great artwork on the walls (that you can buy, if you wish), yummy home brewed beer, and a cozy waiting area. Oh, and talk about convenience. I had the day off and called just to see if Laura had any openings that day. Laura wasn't in and wasn't suppose to come in that day, but on a whim, she decided to come in just to cut & color my hair. What a doll! RPSS is in downtown durham. No need to worry about parking. I parked right on the street, but if there is no parking available, you can park in the garage across the street. As someone who goes to all the quick in quick out salons when I freak out about needing a hair cut ASAP this was hard for me to have patience and wait a week, but so worth it. I had Laura cut my hair and she took the perfect amount of time making sure it was what I wanted. She's very easy to talk to, and it didn't feel horribly awkward and rushed like it can in some at Great clips, etc where they seem to just want you in and out. She did a great job! I know writing a review on the same day as my experience and giving it 5 stars may be a little premature but I am totally going back and I know it will be great. This is a five-star review from someone who, admittedly, is not too fussy about her hair. I revel in low-maintenance, wash-and-go styles. This doesn't mean, however, that I am not fussy about who cuts it. I am not one for inane chit-chat. I want to chill out, snip the locks, and be happy about it. (Perhaps this is all because my hair grows back fast. Cuts don't last long, and with short hair I'm dealing with hair appointments more often than most.) Jenean seems to get all this. Before taking out the scissors she asked me about my routine and what I was looking for. She got the idea (low maintenance, but not altogether boring), and suggested a few options. UPDATE: Did I say I loved my bangs?? BEST BANGS EVER! I was referred here by my friend who sees Laura. I hesitated to go because my friend and I have different styles and taste, but when I saw the logo, I knew it wasn't a traditional salon. I booked my appointment with Jenni for a bang trim and blow out. When I went in, I looked at the menu and realized that the price for blow out and bang trim was the same as for a cut (which includes blow out) and I started to wonder if I was going to get just the bang trim and be screwed out of a haircut. But whoever booked my appointment, just booked me for a haircut, so I was relieved. After she invited me over to the chair, she offered me a drink (I had an iced coffee with simple syrup - yum!) and asked me what I wanted. Since I was booked for a haircut, I asked for even more of a bang (like Jenean) and for her to trim the rest of my hair. Jenni had a very relaxing energy. When she shampooed my hair, she was soooo gentle and during the cut, I kept getting goosebumps and felt calm. My bangs came out awesome! I have a bit of a cowlick in front and the last stylist to cut my bangs made it so I hated my bangs! I guess the heavier bang helps keep it down? They are just the right length to wear straight down or to push over for a shorter look. The rest also came out great - I received lots of compliments! I have naturally dark blonde hair that I get highlighted. I am particular about my color and I have had a hard time finding a Durham salon that could match the quality that I had taken for granted on the west coast, where I'm from. I found this salon based on yelp reviews and I just went for my first visit last Thursday. I couldn't be happier. I saw Jenni, who was able to squeeze me in with only a few days notice because of a cancellation. She was friendly, easy to talk with, and really listened to what I wanted for my hair. She did exactly what I asked -- and had the skill to do it right! She did the really fine, natural-looking pieces around my face and lightened the top with slightly thicker pieces. For the cut, she did both wet and dry cutting, really taking her time to get the layering right. We chatted about how she's also a musician and likes to travel. She's also into kettle bell workouts and trail running. I enjoyed hearing her stories. One funny thing (not bad!) that I noticed was that all three of the co-owners look alike! They all have brunette hair that is long and straight, with bangs. And, they all have tatoos. Jenni laughed when I pointed it out and said that they have similar taste and it make things real easy when they were decorating the salon, which has a edgy, artsy feel to it. I live in downtown Raleigh, but drive to Durham to get my hair done. Laurie is the *best* stylist I've ever had and I feel so lucky to have found her. My hair has never looked better. Even when I was broke and I wasn't able to afford a cut for like 4 months, my cut still held up and looked great. I literally think she might be magic. The customer service is great too! However, since I have to move to the DC area at the end of summer, I will go ahead and sing my Allelujahs! This is by far the best salon in all of the Triangle. I had been salon shopping for quite a while. I had found two things in the local salons -Big city prices -Country bumpkin style (sorry- sometimes bigger is not better) The prices at this salon are student friendly. However, more importantly, I have had the best haircuts of my life here. I've had strangers stop me and ask where I've gotten my haircuts. Jenean is my stylist, and she is great, but I've never seen an"ehh" hairstyle from any stylist while people watching as my dye set in. Trust me- you'll love this place. Great service, great hair cut, great space. I've never been to the same salon twice but I'll be back here to get my "semi-annual trim." I have unruly Asian hair that was chemically straightened about 6 months ago. I desparately needed a trim and somehow just a few inches off and my hair feels better than after paying ~$120 for my last treatment/trim. Jeneane was great, highly recommend her. She took the time to talk through what would be best for my type of hair, especially given my lack of trim ups and daily low maintenance. Nothing was rushed even though I know she has a jam packed schedule. Also, I usually don't pay much attention to a salon's products, but the morrocan oil was amazing. even using it once i could see--and more importantly feel--restored health and shine. If you need a haircut and you don't want a supercuts cut, this place is worth your money and time. read more

Awesome experience! They were pretty heavily booked but I managed to get a spot for the next day due to a cancelled appointment. I showed Joel a picture of Taylor Swift's long bob and he replicated it almost perfectly. One concern I had was that the ends of my hair were previously dyed pink so I was afraid that if I were to cut it, it would look slightly awkward with the remaining bits of colored hair. However, Joel cut it at the perfect length such that it looked natural. Throughout the session, he also addressed a lot of my hair questions/concerns and was really great about giving me tips. Prices were decent - it was $45 for shampoo+cut+blowdry. This is the first time I've spent over $20 on my hair (real adult experiences!!) and it was definitely worth it. read more

I just got back from yet another fantastic haircut with Emmy. I highly recommend going to her, especially if you have curly hair - mine is super curly in some places and kind of wavy in others. I first went to her when I wanted all of my long hair chopped off - she was the first stylist to not try to talk me out of it, and gave me a fantastic cut that flattered my face and worked with my curls. Since then, I have gone back to her to maintain my haircut, and she never disappoints! It is SO hard to find someone who cuts curly hair in a way that doesn't make it look like a giant pouf, especially when you want it short. I am constantly getting asked by other curly haired girls where I go to get my haircut. Also, the receptionist is super nice, they have a referral program, and there is beer. Had a super great haircut from Amanda on a Saturday morning. I was desperate for a good haircut after having my husband give me a trim about 8 months before and growing my quarantine hair. I have not been here outside of COVID rules so this is how RPS is doing pandemic haircuts. When I arrived, mask donned, they took my temperature at the door before I walked in and I was directed to Amanda's chair where I sat and waited for a few min. On their website they note to arrive with clean, dry hair so that close contact time is minimized for customers and their clients. They are also doing "dry" cuts so there was no water sprayed, no shampoo, just a gal and her scissors! I was a little curious how this would go since my wavy hair turns fluffy once you pull a brush through it. I had a really nice time chatting with Amanda, who ended up cutting ~6-7 inches (and my hair is still past my shoulders!) the dry haircut went really well, only took about 30 min and my hair feels super fresh, healthy and looks adorable! I will definitely come back for my next trim! And hopefully eventually get to enjoy all the amenities that were offered pre-pandemic! Thanks again!! read more

I love this spot. I actually followed my stylist from another location to this place and couldn't be happier. The staff have all been very friendly and responsive, and the vibe of the salon is trendy but calming. Sara always gives me a great cut and is very responsive if I want to try out a different style or method, etc. This place is my go-to for recommendations to friends! read more
