The service was super nice, my family was a bit rowdy and we were happy to get a table for Mother's Day on short notice! Staff were really kind, seated asap. I got the beet salad with bacon, super good and refreshing. My family's food wasn't their cup of tea, we got the chicken and waffles special but the waffle tasted like it was frozen then reheated. It was also not a whole waffle, just 1/4 of a waffle just about. The potatoes/sweet potato mix had too much salt for our liking. Another family member got a burger with just cheese and meat, they asked to be well done but it was burnt/hard to chew, on the smaller side compared to the rest of the bun. Disastrous meal. I got the same dried out shrimp as a previous review stated. Grits were like over cooked polenta. Some weird salty braised meat on top w a smear of bad bbq sauce on the side. I grow the same lettuce in my garden that looks better than what I was given. Idt a sawzall would have gotten through the mutton my companion ordered. I'm so confused...this place seems to be doubling as a daycare? Two shrieking children are here and appear to be the children of one of the servers. The other server is wearing a child on her back, and there are multiple large toy things in the way. In addition to that bizzareness, the food is bad. The burger seems to be a pre frozen patty, no flavor. The shrimp and grits are a tiny portion of four shrimp with a sliver of grits cake. The grits are the only decent part. The shrimp is very over cooked, as well as some dry little fish cake of some kind. How this place is so highly rated is beyond me. It's awful. Our group of 9 had an excellent experience at Rock Sea's. Starting with great cocktails and wine with two charcuterie boards, perfect for 9 people, which included crispy bread, cheese, meats and pickles including pickled ginger. Then a round of delicious Caesar and grilled peach salads. A variety of main dishes came out at the same time, which has been an issue sometimes with our big group. Mains included shrimp with a slab of deep fried grits, pork roast with grits, steak with balsamic reduction, fried chicken with dipping sauce & fries and even a yummy hamburger. Our servers were very friendly & attentive and showed their true appreciation to everyone. It's a small local place that did a great job taking care of our large group. Ok, so I paid up front $85 for Thanksgiving dinner. Entered the restaurant. There was a buffet style offerings lined up on the bar. It looked good. Got our plates and loaded them with turkey, ham, and the trimmings. Sat down and started to dine. They say that Thanksgiving turkey is the most anticipated meal of the year. The turkey and ham were as COLD. So was most of the trimmings. Horrible. Luckily they brought out a new plate of turkey (after I struggled through that cold stuff). We went up to get some warm food and was glared at by the owner, like she was saying "seconds"??? Well yeah, cold turkey belongs between bread, not on a plate for thanksgiving. This is the third time I have gone here. Last time I ordered chicken wings. For close to $15 I was served 3 little chicken wings, one of which was missing most of its meat. Will I go back? My wife and I have been coming here regularly since we moved here a year and a half ago. In our opinion this is the best restaurant around. I usually get the shrimp and grits and my wife loves the fried chicken. The brussels sprouts and french fries are amazing and so are the desserts. The owner is a gifted chef. It is commendable for real people with real lives to run and operate a business like this. It is a family run business and we are very happy to support it. Wow!! First time ever for American food that makes me feel like wanting to come back again and again (never ever happened before for American food). Everything we ordered is so fresh and flavorful and delicious. We arrived quite hungry so we orderded 2 share and 2 main. Good food. Nice place. I had the ricotta fritters, Caesar with anchovies and the fried chicken and polished it off with key lime pie. Thankfully it's happy hour so it wasn't steep for one person. The fritters were really good with a thin crunchy shell and soft interior. They came with blustered cherry tomatoes and honey and it was very tasty. The chicken was good but cooked off the bone. Before Sunday I had never heard of Hopland, Ca., but now I can't stop thinking about it. Rock Seas is to blame! What can I say that hasn't already been mentioned in the countless five star reviews? Not much I presume, other than my husband and I accidentally ate the best meal of our life (no disrespect to the Michelin star restaurants in which we've eaten previously) while driving through to the Bayarea. From the moment we stepped inside and were greeted by the lovely Sarah (our awesomely friendly server) we knew we had stumbled upon a gem. Every detail has been thoroughly thought of and perfectly executed by Roxanne, the owner. From the mosaic, to the tables, to the artwork, and the music, your every sense is stimulated - and that's before you take your first bite. As for the food... sigh... we started with stuffed figs which were perfection. They were served with bacon, greens, and a balsamic reduction. We devoured every bite. For our entrees, my husband ordered the fried chicken. Too simple? Not if it's perfectly crisp on the outside, moist on the inside, flavorful like grandma's and "the best damn chicken" my husband had ever tried. I ordered the prawns and pork belly on a bed of greens served with (my favorite part of the meal) fried corn on the cob. My dish was a complex symphony of flavors that worked beautifully together. It was flavorful and light, and it simultaneously took me back to my youth and introduced me to new flavors. Though I was completely satisfied after my meal, I could've eaten another. It was THAT good! The pièce de résistance was our dessert. We ordered the grilled peaches with homemade blackberry sorbet, topped with candied pecans. It was exquisite! I feel bad (ish) for my husband, as my "one bite" turned into a "I really want to lick my plate" moment. Very seldom do you find a chef who can do it all, Roxanne is the rare exception. whats make up a five star review per my definition... 1. Walking in and being made to feel as if I made the right choice for dinner. Being greeted with warmth and sincerity. 2. Being presented with a menu with a great variety of options but not over whelming. Having a server/hostess beautifully explaining the options including what makes them special. 3. Served a dish with color and presentation that food deserves. Having each bite create a first thought of this is really good. 4. Seeing the owner come over and say hello and thank you for being there. 5. Receiving the bill and being really grateful for its represented value. Feeling it was well worth it. The place itself is very eclectic in the decor and warm at the same time. They even have hooks to hang purses and bags along with unusual style of chairs....
