You pick what you want and pay indoors where they have more selections of sweets or pickled items to take. There is some shaded area to eat but it's extremely hot and unpleasant to eat outside. I'm not sure they have fans or if they do, they weren't on. It's July so I'd recommend to plan to eat it in your car or indoors at their diner if you can. $7 per slice is pretty expensive for what you get but you do have an option to get half a pie for $15 but they have limited selections for those. Not what it used to be. There was a time this was a quaint roadside with amazing pie. Service was always poor, but the pie made up for it. The last 4 stops, it has gone consistently downhill. I can get better pie now at Safeway. This stop, got banana cream pie and pecan pie. The bananas in this pie were fully rotten! It looked like the bottom of the pie was covered in mold they were so black. The crust didn't taste right either. This is unacceptable quality and makes me wonder how long these "fresh" pies are sitting in the freezer now that they expanded the location. It was disgusting! Complete waste of money. I had been willing to buy a half pie on the pecan, but there were none and the staff didn't grasp the concept of cutting a pie in half to make two half pies (as they advertise they sell). I can already hear the question: "Five stars... for this place?" Yeah. And I mean it. Rock Springs Cafe is probably my favorite "tourist trap" in Arizona, and I don't use that term as an insult. It knows exactly what it is, and more importantly, it leans into it without apology. We stopped in yesterday with a group of nine after a night up in Sedona, heading back toward Phoenix. This has become a bit of a tradition for us, but it was the first visit for most of our extended family. Before we even got inside, they started noticing something unusual. People walking out were smiling, making eye contact, telling us, "Get the pie." Not once or twice. Over and over. It's got that kind of reputation. You walk in and it's part restaurant, part roadside curiosity. There's a gift shop right there selling pickled everything, jars lined up like a museum of vinegar and ambition, plus the usual mix of souvenirs and trinkets. It sets the tone immediately. This isn't trying to be refined. It's trying to be memorable. Because of our size, we were seated in the larger dining room. It's got that classic, slightly chaotic charm. The kind of place kids instantly love because there's so much to look at. Ours were fully entertained before the menus even landed. Food-wise, it delivers exactly what you want it to. I had the pulled pork Reuben, which hit the spot in that unapologetically indulgent way. Not delicate, not trying to impress a food critic. Just good, satisfying, and gone faster than I expected. The kids ordered off the kids menu, no complaints, no leftovers worth mentioning. Everything came out right, no issues, no drama. If I'm being completely honest, this probably lands at four stars on food alone. Solid, enjoyable, but not life-changing. Then Andrea shows up. Our server completely changed the experience. She was warm, genuinely friendly, and knew how to read the table. She gave us time when we needed it, checked in without hovering, chatted just enough to make it feel personal without slowing things down. We love the general market with canned goods, an ice cream shop, and candy shop with souvenirs and fun shopping items. Stopped in on the way up to Flagstaff for lunch. We strolled around and window shopped then stopped into the Pie Box, bought a blueberry pie for home and waited in the enclosed patio there. Here we waited for an hour or more for our food to finally come out. Maybe they are short staffed. The waitress and bus boy we did have were very nice and accommodating when in our area. The sweet potato fries were burnt and flattened. The fried cod was the worst fish I've ever had. It was so dry inside that I couldn't cut through it. I ripped it with my hands and tried to eat it with tartar sauce to get some protein. So dry it was like fish jerky and I had to pick through to find chewable bites. - CHOPPED SALAD - (3/5) Choice of grilled or crispy chicken. Daughter said this salad was good. Filling and big. She didn't care for the processed chicken pieces in the salad - TOP SIRLOIN - (3/5) Seasoned and grilled to order. A little overcooked. Baked potato seemed old to Hubs. Driving with the fam to Sedona and it was a must to stop by to get pie, and we decided to eat lunch before getting back on the road. This spot is so quaint and cute. Love that there are two dining rooms and that old country diner feel. I ordered the broccoli & quinoa salad and a side of onion rings. The veggies were also perfect texture and not super hard & raw. The onion rings were amazing--super crispy! Brother loved the steak & said it tasted like it was cooked over grill which added to the smokiness of it. Eggs were cooked as requested and the potatoes were well seasoned. SIL said the reuben was flavorful and filling (had to take half home) and the fries were well seasoned and just the right crispiness with the light battery. Nephew is a picky eater and usually only eats chicken tenders, but he enjoyed the chicken and waffles. We ordered strawberry rhubarb with ice cream, chocolate, and Tennessee lemon pie slices. I told them the strawberry rhubarb was a must, and I didn't steer them wrong. It's by far my favorite here. The lemon was divine. I loved the crust and the consistency of the custard. We stopped in for breakfast on a Sunday about 9:30am. The hostess sat us right away but it took a little while for our waitress to take our order. I wanted waffles but the waitress told me they were out, they had pancakes and french toast. I ordered buttermilk pancakes, 2 eggs and bacon. The brisket was very fatty and the flavor was disappointing. The chicken fingers also lacked flavor. The ribeye was the best thing we ordered for dinner. It was flavorful but wasn't very thick. Sadly, after decades of fun visits, I have recently found that Rock Springs Cafe is no longer worth the drive. The two stars I gave them are for their awesome, long-suffering employees who are consistently charming and efficient, not matter what they are having to deal with. I think the biggest problem they have is keeping, and managing, good people. They consistently have way too many customers for the meager few employees that are on the floor each day. This leads to long wait times for diners. Most of the servers are stressed, with too much to do, but they hide it pretty well. My last visit was in April. I MUCH prefer to sit in the bar area, as it is much more spacious and better looking, but for the last several times I've been there, we weren't allowed to sit in the bar because they don't have enough servers to cover it! Huge bummer. So, when I arrived at 3:00 pm, the "no hostess" sign was up. Customers were lined up, just waiting for a server to notice them and take them to, hopefully, a clean table. The tables were not filled, by any means. But there were only two servers that I could see. I finally got seated at 3:15. Both my drink and food orders were taken at 3:30. My drink arrived at 3:40, which was 25 minutes after I ordered it. The food arrived at 4:00pm. The place was at about 35-40% capacity, and I still had to wait an hour from when I walked in. I was feeling pretty sad for this place and its current condition, compared to the good old days. I won't even bother to mention how badly the pies have degraded, and how outrageously priced they are now, because other reviewers have already covered that ground. The place needs to be sold to someone who cares more and/or is better funded. They also need to remove the outdated and offensive shoplifting signs from the 70s. Getting down to the actual cafe, we had about a 30 minute wait at 2ish on a Friday. No biggie, because there's plenty of shopping to do while you wait for the text that your table is ready. My daughter and I each ordered the drink special, Prickly Pear Lemonade. The drinks tasted like plain lemonade with no alcohol. When I asked our waitress if the drinks were supposed to have alcohol she said yes, Vodka. We then had to wait around 5 minutes for our server. They were out of many things on their menu, so there was no meal that appealed to my wife. She went right to pie and ice cream. I had the Philly Cheesesteak with the brisket and the fries. Their fries are amazing! They are seasoned and were perfectly done. The cheesesteak was served with au jous, which I didn't use. It's not a traditional Philly cheesesteak , but it's very very good. I tried the rhubarb pie without ice cream. It was good rhubarb but rhubarb by itself is a somewhat bitter. I recommend having it with ice cream. The server offered me a different slice of pie, but I declined. The pie and food that was available were excellent! This place is an under appreciated gem on the route between Phoenix and Flagstaff. A perfect pit stop whether you're heading North or South. There's even a gas station next door in case you need to fill up your ride and not just your pie hole. I make it a point to stop whenever I can and tonight, like usual, Flo Castleberry was my waitress. Who knew she was still around?!? It's old school diner food all the way around and it's delightful. I had the chicken fried steak, which was a tender and moist pounded chicken breast with tasty, perfectly crispy crust. Best of all it was smothered in creamy savory milk gravy. The mashed potatoes had a little pepper kick and were skin on and chunky, like me. And also like me by the end of the meal, they were covered in that same yummy milk gravy. You gotta ask for the milk gravy though, otherwise you'll get brown gravy, which is good but not as country, my bumpkin. And you also gotta soak it up with their delicious corn bread. It's made with whole corn kernels and jalapeño for a texture and flavor that lets you know it's home made and not out of a Jiffy box. As a matter of fact, the whole meal tasted so homemade that I thought my grandma was in the kitchen. Although, that seemed weird because she's dead. Or maybe she was there and that's where the flies came from. Either way, there's great great food here for a fair price. And it's not just the high quality old fashioned food and service that's worth the stop. There's a well-appointed country store and dedicated pie shop there as well. The country store sells high quality packaged foodie food stuffs like interesting jams, dressings, and sauces, plus fudge and ice cream to take away. I got a jar of my favorite strawberry rhubarb jam to bring home. I also looked in the mirror in the bathroom on my way out so that I could talk myself out of getting one of their famous pie milkshakes. But, I couldn't talk myself out of perusing the pie shop. That alone is worth the trip from Phoenix. I got a few slices of different flavors for tonight for the family, plus three whole fruit pies to put in the freezer for desserts after Sunday dinners. Stopped to get gas on the way down from Sedona to Phoenix and the place I pulled over at happened to be a pie place I had read about before going to AZ. Established in 1918 there is a lot to do here; there is a general store, a sign for an albino bat, gems and rocks, a cafe, pieshop, and bathrooms with an old beer keg the've repurposed into a urinal. Unfortunately, we had to meet our friends at a certain time and did not see everything, while I was pumping gas we did run into the pie shop. The pie shop is in a separate building that is well marked. They sell whole pies and also by the slice which is exactly what we were looking for. Review is for the pies only. Apple Pie: The classic, topped with a crumb crust made of flour, sugar, and butter. Nice and "crunchy" and delicious with every bit of apple and crust. Just too sweet for our taste. Banana Cream Pie: They ship some pies and this is not one of them so best grab it in person. After years of passing by this charming shop on our trips north, my husband and I finally decided to stop. We had planned on just picking up some pie, but the inside of the store was so cute and inviting, with shelves full of unique canned goods that we couldn't resist exploring. Next door, the pie shop offered slices for $6.95, and we couldn't leave without grabbing a Key Lime, Strawberry Rhubarb, and Bourbon Pecan pie, plus two soft-baked Snickerdoodle cookies. This review is for two family visits to the Rock Springs Cafe; one on Monday, May 18, 2026 and the other on Saturday, May 23, the start of the Memorial Day weekend. The reason we came back on May 23 was because the food and service was so good on our first visit, as we were heading to the Grand Canyon, that we resolved to stop in on our return to Phoenix later that week. Our server on our first visit was Julie, and she was friendly, attentive, and very professional. My wife ordered the taco salad with ground beef. Julie explained that the ground beef used is also used for the chili, and that it was a little spicy. My wife is sensitive to spicy food, but she decided to give it a try. It was the highlight of her meal; just the right amount of heat and not overly spicy, and rest of the salad was fresh and tasty. The cranberry walnut salad I ordered was also fresh and tasty, although the chicken was a bit dry. Our son ordered the home made biscuits and gravy, which he said were delicious. The gravy was amongst the best he's had, and it contained bits of sausage. The serving sizes were all very generous, so there was no room for pie, unfortunately. Julie invited us to come back next week and leave room for pie, so we did just that. It was a really good meal, and a great way to start our vacation, worthy of five stars. Business was relatively slow on our first visit, but, when we visited the following Saturday, the restaurant was packed, since Memorial Day is the start of the summer travel season. We were seated within 15 minutes and were promptly greeted by Dakota. She told us the kitchen was out of numerous items and gave us a few minutes to look over the menus. One of the menus was quite dirty, with what seemed like maple syrup on the plastic-covered page. This time, I ordered the rib basket appetizer, my wife ordered a chopped salad with grilled chicken, and our son ordered the Rock Springs burger. On our first visit, the food took 10-15 minutes to arrive, on this visit, it took nearly 30 minutes. The ribs were meaty, but were room temperature, and seasoning was light and unremarkable. My wife's chopped salad was stacked high and served on a regular plate. There was so much salad that it was difficult for her to eat without the salad ending up on the table and, after 15 minutes, it looked like she'd hardly made a dent in it. She said the chicken was very dry, and ended up leaving more than half or her salad uneaten. Our son had no complaints about the burger, which appeared to be cooked perfectly. We each ended up getting a slice of the Dutch crust apple pie ala mode, which was served warm with a generous scoop of high quality vanilla ice cream. Rock Springs Cafe has quite a history, and the decor really shows its Western history. However, it looks like it hasn't been refreshed in nearly 20 years, and some of the posters, plaques and other things on the wall are in rough shape. The men's bathroom are unique, furnished with urinals made from beer kegs and more license plates than you can count. Rock Springs Cafe was a great stop for us, twice, and we plan to return on our next visit to the Grand Canyon. read more

The tremendous overpricing of the pies! Years ago we used to stop by regularly but their prices have continued to rise and are currently around $27 each! Shame on you guys. You're no longer famous for great pies ...& now are famous for gouging your customers ! read more

Stopped on the way home from up north. This is a staple cafe, been here for over 100 years. They have a shop with lots of specialties sauces, honey, salsa, homemade fudge, warm nuts taffy and so much more! We got breakfast and Gaylyn took care of us. She was delightful. There was also a hostess that greeted and sat us promptly and made sure the drinks weren't empty. We tried several items. The buttermilk pancakes were huge and delicious! I got the American Classic meal with eggs, bacon, potatoes and toast. Everything came out cooked perfect and hot! On point and well done Rock Springs Cafe. We couldn't leave without ordering a couple pieces of their famous pies. They sell thousands during the holidays FYI Coconut Cream was fresh and one of the best this coconut loving family has had... ever. The Bourbon Pecan was served warm with ice cream and fantastic too. read more
