Reduce, REUSE, recycle! One man's trash is another man's treasure. Except you have to pay for trash nowadays. Great selection of lightly used reading books, CDs, and DVDs for super cheap! You can also cash in your own for some side cash. They have other things too, but I've only checked out their books and DVDs. Their book selection is tremendous! I've been here twice with fellow Yelper Linh P. and both times, I left with a book in hand for personal reading during my downtimes. They have a wall lined with shelves of books inside and a smaller selection outside. Everything is well organized and easy to sort through. With enough browsing, you just might pick up a good read for about $5. You'll never know what you'll find here. Give this place a go if you're feeling open-minded. This place is pretty cool. Cheap used DVDs which is cool. A ton of old VHS movies but they could be a little cheaper (I've seen some for $.50/each... here they're $2.00 after tax unless you buy multiple). CDs, books, other misc cool little things. They have some books on astrology but not many. Friendly service overall though I get a little agged when the store's policy doesn't let you briefly set your bike inside the door rather than lock it up outside (I know it's not the employees faults). Overall really cool feel to the place. The old movies playing via projection on the wall are neat. I think its safe to say I'm a fan. read more

This place is pretty awesome! I love the homemade aprons, the vintage clothes from the 30s and 40s, the vinyl (yes!!), really cheap used books and the rocket in the middle of the store with dvds for less than $2. There's no other store like this as far as I know on the island, but if I'm wrong, please let me know! I sold a box of books, mostly old and a couple new, along with some dvds and got a very fair price, I thought, especially given that I didn't have to drive over a bridge, pay for parking and deal with the picky staff at Green Apple in San Francisco, where they usually won't take half of what you have, which is really irritating and forces you to make the walk of shame to Goodwill or Salvation Army to donate the rejects. No one does that, of course, which is why there are always piles of books outside on Clement. Back to this place! Unlike mentioned in some of the reviews here, the guy behind the counter took all of five minutes to go through my stuff and I had the price of cash vs. trade within ten minutes. I did not have to leave my stuff overnight and was quite happy! Quality and variety of used books and dvds vary....but what a cute store! read more

I heart BlueRectangle. And I've only been in once! I found a hardcover copy of a Chabon book I've being eyeing for months for 5 bucks. When I brought it to the counter, the clerk said he was wondering who's home it would be going to, because it's fantastic. I love that I can talk about an author with someone who cares about the books they're selling. They also have lots of cheap vinyl, dresses, and vintage material. This is a place that wants customers to see the value of recycling and resuing great things that still have use and retro appeal, which is a philosophy I'm happy to pass along on yelp. read more

This is the kind of bookstore I would open myself. They've got the normal selection of used books mixed with some older vintage finds (all cheap!), cds and movies. But they also have vintage clothes (with a phone booth dressing room), a small selection of candy, records (bonus star for playing Sam Cooke), and they project old movies on the back wall. I haven't been able to get into "Kindle" or any other form of electronic books so Rocket Reuse is my prime source for books. The inventory seems to turn frequently, about every two weeks or so. I can't say that I have ever left without finding at least something good to read. Be sure to check out the rack out front. Besides a good selection, they offer a fair deal for trade-ins. You are given a choice of cash or store credit. With the number of books I read, I usually take the store credit. The owner and staff are very friendly. Great little 'concept store' amongst these crazy huge antique malls on every side. Vinyl, Comics, DVD's, and more make this a pop culture geeks paradise! The store is small and stocked with some collectible stuff and batches of cheapie boxes. They're open late so you can stop after food or ice cream. Parking is street for this store. SELLER BEWARE! I enjoyed shopping at Blue Rectangle, so I thought I would see what I could get for some of my stuff. One lot I was looking to unload was a bunch of rare Swiss art magazines dating back to the 1950's and some Ashland Shakespeare Festival magazines from the mid 1970's. I lugged a plastic box with about forty pounds of rare mags from a parking spot a block away to the Blue Rectangle storefront. I had a pleasant conversation with the fellow at the register and he said somebody would give me a call. Well a few days later I got a call alright. Fifty cents in cash or $1 in store credit. No thanks I said. Next time I was in the neighborhood, I came by with my slip and asked for my magazines. The gal I had never seen before at the register went upstairs for a while, dug around, and didn't find my stuff. She also lost my claim check! Well for fifty cents, (an amount I had already spent on gas and parking five times over not to mention my time wasted) I told her I would come back. I came back about a month later, explained my situation to the fellow to whom I had originally given the magazines for evaluation. He spent about fifteen minutes digging around and then talking to somebody upstairs. My property had already been "processed". I could however have my fifty cents cash or store credit of $1!!!!!!! I mentioned that I only received the initial phone call offering me that whopping fifty cents and the guy at the register said they only call once. Go figure.... Stay away from this place if you are selling! read more

Small, bargain, used book store. They also sell cds, lps, and give away free children's books! So far, everytime I've come here looking for something, they had it! And all three times the books were $4 even! If you don't have cash on you, you can even use your debit/credit card for one book at $4 :o) NICE! One time I was looking for a book required for my Social Research class, they didn't have it on the floor, but they did have it in their warehouse or storage. They awesome dude at the counter got my name and number and called me back the same day letting me know they got it outta the warehouse for me! There was no fee or anything for getting it, it was still $4 bucks baby! So if you're looking for something, but don't see it on the shelves, ASK! To your suprise they just might have it. Happened to wander in here, had a lovely time. None of the clothes were my size but they were all cute as hell -- lots of nice skirts for work, cool patterned sweaters, and '50s-style sleepwear. They had a lot of great CDs and VHS tapes as well, though we didn't spend that much time sorting through those because OMG THEIR BOOK SELECTION. My friend and I both walked out of there with (proooobably) way more than we intended to, but you can't beat the price. Their sections were very organized but their collection is eccentric to say the least -- which really only added to its charm, ultimately. If you have an interest (trivia, cooking, women's studies, crime stories, etc) they will definitely have at least a few off-the-beaten-path books to grab your attention. I wouldn't advise going in there with one particular item in mind, but you'll be happy with what you wind up getting anyway. read more

Excellent thrifty store located in Alameda. It is open a bit later then most places (I went in around 8:30 for a late night browsing session) They have CDs, records, old games, old books and some cool vintage clothing items. The prices are reasonable. It is a great place to peruse for a good hour. They have a ton of cute clasp bags. read more

What a wonderful surprise to be on my way to Peets and wander in to a lovely new and used bookstore. Great selection and they have some of the cheapest used DVD's on the island. Large selection but not overwhelming. Good organization, clean and welcoming. Hot tip - in the back they have a box of FREE kids books, not junky stuff either.
