Update - Parking The fenced in lot of Laney College, on E. Eighth St. & 5th Ave., was locked and empty. You can go into the Peralta Community College District lot from E. Eighth Ave., just past the estuary, to park for free but you might need to wait for a a lot to open. There's an attendant who directs traffic. Today is Mother's Day and there were tons of people at the Flea Market buying an assortment of goods: toiletries, clothing, electronics, comforters, plants, vegetables, power tools, bicycles, etc. ***Gilberto's Roasted Peanuts is the main reason to go. Maria & Beto work hard and roast the peanuts on-site. These are truly the BEST in-shell peanuts you can find; I prefer the "light" variety over the "dark" and always buy several large bags for home, friends, and neighbors. They're also at the Treasure Island Fest on certain days. Be sure and give Maria a $$ tip when you pay for your peanuts, she deserves it!

2/5/23 - went there today and there was nothing going on. A ghost town. I haven't been in a few years, is it still in the parking lot ?

2/5/23 - decided to go today. Hopped on bart and when I got there... nothing. A ghost town. Is the flea market still in the parking lot ? And if so does it run every weekend? This was my first time going since pre-pandemic so it's been awhile. I don't even know if there's a website for the flea market to find out what weekends it happens... Still, when I did go, back in the day, it was cool.

We're here mostly for the junk food but great selection of tools and bikes and toiletries. I'm pretty sure 100% legit.

I had a moment here yesterday with a labradoodle. In the midst of this dog friendly shopping extravaganza I locked eyes with this adorable pooch: the size and temperament of a golden retriever with curly locks that were all over the place. Pooch couldn't keep her eyes off me to the embarrassment of the owner who was also kind of cute. She kept tugging the dog away from me and pooch never stopped staring. I like to think of myself as a dog whisperer. Decent burgers and tacos, dog and people watching. Ab rollers, disco balls and some slightly used as-seen-on-TV items that people were suckered into by fast talking salesmen only to be disappointed. They offer items for sale here to unload onto the next unsuspecting victim with two dollars. Old vacuums, toaster ovens, leaking coffee makers and broken staplers are good finds here. Watch out though. Parking is long distances away. I would discourage buying anything too heavy. If your here looking for something you may never find it (CL is a better option). But everything you don't need is in abundant supply here. This place is for browsing and enjoying a Sunday afternoon and buying all the stuff you didn't know you needed till you saw it here. My friend sniffs in every corner at this place and just can't get enough. He greedily paws through gigantic piles of clothes. Digs on the bottom of every box looking for the good stuff. Walks at a snails pace and stares down everything seemingly with superhero laser vision. Don't ever go with him - he spends hours here getting sunburned testing Girlfriends patience making sure she is indeed wife material. Yes this is a great date idea. You will learn so much more than you would sitting silently in a movie theater... and so much more fun too. Give one other a $20 budget each to buy something. Toss each item on ebay to see whos item sells for more. Other fun passtimes here: Listen in on negotiations of two people who speak different languages or argue with the people trying to sell you their religion. See if GF can hold a conversation with said religious people. Oh, and see how much empathy she has for that guy with with the lowrider bicycle, hermonica and the bucket for donations. Hes kind of cool. When he sits on his bike and backs up he makes a "beep, beep, beep" sound just like a big truck going in reverse.

On any given Sunday, walking into Laney college Flea Market feels like crossing the border into Tijuana. Language Spoken: Español of course ese! That's the main language here with a sprinkle of Cantonese. But everybody here speaks the universal language here, which is green dinero Muchacho!!! What's Inside?: It's just a big garage sale where if you've recently had tools, a bike, car stereo, or anything like that stolen, it's probably a good idea to stop by here and see if you can find it. It also serves as a big "lost and found". Just make sure you "find" it before somebody else buys it. Parking: Yup. There's a lot. The earlier you get there the easier parking is. You know how the saying goes: "The early bird gets the flippin parking space..." Best Part about the Flea Market: The food. The pupusas are delicious. There's a nice ice cream truck too that is quite good. If you have no other reason to go to Laney College Flea Market is to eat the freshly cooked Latin food. Better than any of these overpriced food trucks I see. Do's: take your time and check everything out, it's a humongous place. Don'ts: Don't wear a suit, they'all think you're INS.

Fried chicken. Mexican corn. Macaroni salad.

Hidden treasures, miscellaneous junk, nostalgic items, knock offs, yummy eats. This pretty much sums up flea markets. These sellers are tough cookies to bargain with. I love hats especially on days where I am lazy AF and do not want to shower but need to disguise the hot mess on my head. I was eyeing a few hats and really liked a grey SF one; very simple. $20! He says, okay I'll come back. None of the other stands had this hat and the whole time I was debating if I really wanted it. On our way back towards the exit, we passed by the stand so I had to try it on again. Seller: Anything you try on will look good Me: Oh yeah? How much? Seller: $20 Me: (gona give this bargaining thing a go): Umm, my friend said I should pay $17 Seller: $17? Oh heck for you, I'll give to you for $17! Makes small talk, flash a smile or two, exchange names Me: (hands him $20, he gives me $5) You gave me $5...? Seller: I don't have change Fist bump each other and I leave a happy camper The food was really good. Mexican corn was a popular item. The fried chicken was better than some served in restaurants. House made chips were bomb. Free street parking, $1 entrance free

I recently got into reselling during this covid thing so I am constantly looking for a bargain. This flea market is nice sized and the 1.50 entry is reasonable. I look for anything I can resell so I comb through everything. There is everything you can imagine here from antiques to toys to tools to appliances. I like looking at the people who have random stuff I enjoy going through everything. The best is when everything is a dollar I can usually find a few things to resell. I enjoy the food and the fresh fruit drinks. Parking can be a pain and get here early i made the mistake of coming late when everyone was packing up.

    The corn place

0 stars if I could. DO NOT GO TO THE CORN PLACE! They are over priced now and rude to customers. The older brother worker insisted for us to pay 50 cents to break a corn on the cob in half. So we broke it ourselves and he refused to put anything on it. Keep in mind we had already paid for everything. He finally did put one swipe of mayonnaise and cheese on it. DO NOT GO HERE! RUDE AND OVERPRICED.

Ask the Community - Laney College Flea Market

Is the flea market open in light of COVID? Hoping to go this Sunday

    Its still open.

Is the flea market open in july of 2020 with covid or is it shut down?

It's open now, for the past 3 weeks and I went on 8/16/20, a little less crowded than usual. There were even parking spots on 7th and 8th St.

Has Laney College Flea Market on Fallon in Oakland re-open sans COVID-19 lockdown?

Is Laney still open as of September? I wanted to check it out this weekend

What does one need to do to sell at this flea market? How early can vendors arrive? How much does it cost to reserve/buy a space to sell?

I found a reddit post that sort of answers this: https://www.reddit.com/r/oakland/comments/3db61v/laney_college_swap_meet_space/

However, the parking situation can be quite tedious when arriving after 10am. The entrance fee varies based on the time you come in, with the most expensive being when they open at 6am ($20). My family and I got there around 11am and it was a $10 entrance fee. They do allow re-entries so long as you get a handstamp before exiting. Today was my first time visiting and I was taken aback by how pricey a lot of items were - especially the clothing. Many were priced higher than new items. The food vendors present were underwhelming. We had Donna's Tamales and it was quite bland and overpriced. They charged me $18 for 2 corn chili tamales. My husband and I had hoped to find some items for our new spot, but left empty handed. Not sure I will be back for how marked up the items were.

Selling at the flea market should be fun! Prices are what you'll get for NEW in the store. No seller wants to negotiate (and further adds comments such as "I don't want to sell you, you can leave now" or adds excuses such as "it's harder to crochet small animals") even when the market is about to close. I am trying really hard to support... For example, someone in my party wanted toothbrushes. The individual selling the toothbrush placed a price tag higher than what you'll purchase in store NEW (and let's be honest, less likely to be stolen in the stores). The White Elephant sale has honestly felt very different since 2020. Before the pandemic, there were walk up donations, the warehouse was always full, and the March sale was still packed with treasures to be found. Now the warehouse feels empty even during preview, all walk up and drive up donations have been eliminated, and the March sale is advertised as a "clearance sale" because of how empty the warehouse is. Stopping walk up and drive up donations has seriously hurt the sale. The number of small trinket items to be found is much smaller than it used to be. While there may be costs saved by not having to sort through and discard items that are not sellable, is the loss of profit from not having those smaller items greater? People like me used to donate all the time to the sale, but now donate to thrift stores that have walk up and drive up options instead. How many other people also have a bag full of great items but are not donating them because pickup donations are the only option? I have also found that in recent years the staff has become less and less kind. This year there was not a single visit to the warehouse that was not met with rude or unprofessional behavior by volunteers. That is not to say there are not wonderful volunteers, because I have had great experiences as well, but the number of negative interactions I have had seems to be increasing. I have been accused of stealing, had snarky comments made toward me, and have been accused of price switching. It has gotten to the point where going to the White Elephant is no longer bringing me joy, and it is difficult to see volunteers act with such low levels of kindness. You often emphasize being kind to volunteers, but shoppers deserve that same level of kindness and respect. One thing that stands out when it comes to how empty the warehouse has been, as well as the general morale of the volunteers, is the changing culture of reselling. I recognized dealers from Alameda Point and various antique markets as new volunteers, which makes me wonder if they are partially contributing to the diminished quality and quantity of items this year. In the past, almost all volunteers seemed to be there because they believed in the mission of the Oakland Museum. Now it appears that some newer volunteers may be more motivated by making money. It also raises the question that if they are pricing items they later purchase, were those items priced fairly? Especially when their ultimate goal is to resell items and make money. In addition, there seems to be a lack of willingness to receive feedback. As another reviewer mentioned, it can feel like the organization operates under the idea that because it is for charity and run by volunteers, feedback should not be given. That approach is simply unsustainable. I attempted to provide feedback both in person and on Instagram and was met with very combative responses. This is confusing, as feedback is essential when running such a large sale, and experiences like that make me hesitant to return. I have heard from others that the White Elephant has been "cleared out" this year. Without the return of more casual donations, stronger screening of volunteers, and limitations on what volunteers are able to purchase during presale events, the White Elephant will likely continue to decline. As a loyal shopper, I truly hope the organization will begin taking feedback seriously and consider changes that can help bring the sale back to its former glory.

I've gone to the white elephant for years, 10+ to be specific. This year the selection was…read moredrastically different than previous years (I'll get back to this). Not only that, the prices were the highest I had seen. I included photos of some examples of what was priced super high in bric a brac (on your Facebook page the admin said to 'show specific examples') so I took photos of items I couldn't fathom being that high (even after looking on eBay to compare- the prices were just outrageous considering condition and quality). Not only that, but the selection on preview day (im usually in the first 30 people- and first to the department I shop) it already looked picked through. From what I understand the volunteers shop the sale before- but it's very disheartening and worrying when I recognize people who are new volunteers and I regularly see them sell at local things as resellers (nobody is saying you can't do that!), but it's more so the piecing together the lack of vintage and quality goods this year on preview, and the new volunteers, it's easy to assume there is a correlation. I worry that the integrity of the sale may be lost- and will only worsen as the years carry on. I know departments can vary year to year- of course that's a factor I consider. This is not a normal amount of variation- it's not like there was 30% less of something I have ALWAYS seen at your preview sale- it was 100% gone. And when I'm the first person looking- I know someone at preview didn't get it ahead of me. I heard from others who attended- even some people who didn't! They both said the same thing- white elephant was cleared out this year. Culture shifting about second hand and thrifting should be a consideration and something to keep in mind- the structure of this sale will collapse if it isn't. I'd imagine in the next couple years, the amount of resellers volunteering will outnumber the volunteers who have been there for years due to them retiring/ no longer doing it - and in turn will diminish the sale itself. I think how the preview tickets sold out in a little over a day vs a week last year, should convey how there is an increase in demand, to the degree that people will try to covertly get around it and 'ahead' by volunteering. Correct me if I'm wrong, but many new volunteers this year didn't follow through with their commitments after they shopped on their preview- it makes you wonder.
