When I sat down in Savannah's chair yesterday, I simply said, "I've been Paris Parkered to death!" That means, in case you are not familiar, I am THROUGH with boring, "safe" haircuts. I chose Rocket Science based on Yelp reviews, and Savannah because she is the owner . . . I think that's the best way to get a salon's "vision." In her words (well, I'm paraphrasing), she trained the other stylists, so they know the same stuff, but they are all very creative and have their own way of doing things. The salon itself is really nice . . . very roomy, with a lot of natural light, and furnished adorably. I agree with Jess R . . . I wanted to move in! (plus, it's much cleaner than my place is after Mardi Gras . . .) From the shampoo (which was really fun, thanks to a rousing conversation about Jeff Goldblum) to the consultation, to the cut itself, to the style, this salon is the perfect combination of fun and professionalism. And they really are so creative! I sat down, explained my hair type and "round face issues," and Savannah basically asked me, "Do you mind if I chop some of this up, and how do you feel about looking like a rock star?" Well, I am not afraid of scissors, and the one thing I have tried to beat into the heads of other nameless stylists is, "I wanna look like a rock star!" So, I knew we were set. :-) Oh, and another thing . . . every other stylist I have visited in the past few years has told me the same thing: "You can't have bangs. Your forehead is too small." (I guess that makes it a threehead?) When I told Savannah this, she simply said, "Bullshit. There are bangs for everyone just like there is a blonde for everyone." And you know what? She was definitely right in my case! She gave me the most awesome side bangs EVER, and the whole cut is just incredible. I started out with long, straight hair (almost all one length, and BORING), and now I have a cute, funky STYLE that actually flatters my face! I cannot say enough good things about this salon, and Savannah. If I didn't have a wonky event planner schedule, I would have booked my next appointment before leaving the salon. You can bet I'll be back the minute it is time for my next cut . . . FINALLY, I have found the right salon, after years of "meh." I'm the kinda gal who has a stylist in every port. This can be very convenient as I travel a fair amount and you never know when a hair emergency may hit. Once I find someone I love to trust with these otherwise limp locks, I can't bear to give them up. Enter the port of New Orleans and enter Rocket Science Beauty Bar. My first visit here was back in November when I was apartment hunting and they were hosting a Yelp event. After just seeing this place and what they had to offer in terms of services and panache, I knew I would be heading here first to see if it was to be a match made in heaven. The salon is lovingly outfitted with a hip, bright and sparkling decor and is housed in a brightly colored double shotgun house which is located right next to where Stella and Stanley lived on Elysian Fields (seriously). Just sayin', cuz I could easily see Blanche Dubois using this salon if she were still (fictitiously) living next door. I had no idea which stylist to choose, but went with Remy because she had the next appointment available, plus she has smokin' reviews on this here site. And baby, I was in luck cuz 1 hour and 45 minutes later, I walked out with the perfect cut and color. I have a bob with super short bangs. Not everyone can get it right because I've had cuts where I left fuming and in despair. Yes, I am prone to high drama when it comes to my hair, especially when it comes to bangs. Remy was awesome from color to cut. She even added some blue in to what was a more neutral black. The bob is perfect, just how I like it, angled to my jawline and none of that bulk in the lower back that drives me nuts. I even ventured into new bang! territory (that's what I'm going to call them henceforth. Bang!s) and got them a bit more choppy rather than straight, which is a neato little change that I was ready for (my hair doesn't change much and I've had super short bangs for about 12 years... and now I have bang!s). They do free bang maintenance, too, which is sweet. And the price... shockingly low. Cut and single process color came to $129, plus tip. I recently paid 250 for the same exact thing in Kansas City, one of my other ports. So, there ya go. Aaaand, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out where I'll be getting my hair done again in 6 months, now do you? read more

Yep. I love this place. Updating my review after having now been to Rocket Science three times - all for a haircut - with a fourth appointment coming up in a few days for some funky new color. The space is gorgeous. I've been seriously considering just showing up one of these days, laptop in hand, and claiming a spot on the couch as my "office." It's a bit odd, yes, but I've gotten the impression they'd totally be cool with me squatting there to do work. Even if I don't follow through on that plan, I love Rocket Science because the ambiance makes sitting still for 1-2 hours almost bearable. (As you can imagine, sitting still is not something that comes easily to someone like me...) My first haircut was FANTASTIC, and I've decided that Kat is definitely my new stylist. She's awesome about talking me through to a decision when I come in with no clue as to what I want done with my hair. The second time I went in for a haircut, I ended up seeing someone else, and I wasn't as happy with the result. I've found that oftentimes I end up disappointed when I go to get a cut/color, but don't have a solid plan for the stylist. As a result, I end up giving vague instructions, and inevitably I'm not happy with my hair. But Kat is totally able to handle that kind of situation, and I love that she's able to help me come up with an idea when I literally haven't the foggiest notion of what I want, other than something new and different. So, two appointments in one week. Got my hair cut last night (for $49), and I'm going in later this week for color (which will be $75, I'm told, based on the partial highlight/dying the tips of my hair platinum blonde plan we came up with.) Let me first start off in saying what a great experience I had here. The environment was comforting and fun, all the stylists were down to earth, and I definitely left at the end of the day with a smile on my face. I'm in the process of growing out my pixie cut, and getting my mullet tamed was the main reason in booking this appointment. My hair is at an awkward length bellow my ears and above my chin, and since I'm growing it out, my hair stylist, Andrea, ensured me a cut that was pleasant to grow out and yet still complimenting to my face. She also did something I thought I would never be able to pull off in 100 years. We dyed my hair purple, and trust me, words cannot express just how much I adore my new color. She kept my roots brown to make it easier to manage as I grown out my hair, and I'm just in love with the finished product. It took roughly 2 &1/2 hours for my whole cut and color, but time just flew by with there being so many friendly faces to talk to. Nice salon in the Marigny area. I'm still fairly new to New Orleans, and any lady can vouch for me, finding a new hair salon is tough. I have to say, though, I was pretty pleased with my services here. I appreciated that I was able to make an appointment the evening before rather than having to wait weeks to be seen. They offer a nice selection of cruelty free products which I think is great. Davines and Kevin Murphy products are all displayed neatly in addition to a few other brands. I walked out with a great cut and color that I didn't hate and my hair smelled beyond amazing. They are a bit pricey, but in my experience, you get what you pay for; a trip to the salon is no different. read more

I typically don't leave reviews but I felt compelled. Rarely do you find a regular professional who's company you actually enjoy when you go there. Nobody likes dentists, does anybody even see a doctor anymore, and don't get me started on mechanics. But coming here is a breath of fresh hair. They're knowledgeable, polite, funny and everyone knows their stuff. I never really go in expecting anything less than a great cut and they've never failed. I used to just walk-in, but now the Lady Keeley has the keys to my head. New to New Orleans, and was looking for a reliable place to get my acrylic nails filled. After digging through Yelp reviews at other salons, I decided to make an appointment with Paris - and was not disappointed!!! Make sure to make a reservation because she is the only person who does nails (acrylic or not) at the salon, but she was awesome! Paris was very friendly and welcoming, and professional at the same time. She was quick, and did a fantastic job. If you have acrylic nails, you know it can be hard to find someone who does a good job shaping and filling the nails, especially at the cuticle. Additionally, I also get gel on top of the acrylic, which again, Paris was very clean and professional about. I really couldn't find anything wrong with the way she did my nails - and I'm very picky. I only got them done yesterday, but the nail beds look like they're going to grow out very nicely, which is one of the most satisfying parts of finding Paris! Additionally, she has a large collection of regular and gel nail polishes, and she is always adding. Last but not least, you can't beat the price! $30 for a fill and gel, which, in my book, is a steal. I will certainly be back!! read more

I've been to a LOT of different salons and stylists over the years, for color, cuts and more, and I do not actually think I can recall an experience where I felt more at home than Rocket Science. The staff is very friendly, the place is incredibly clean and well maintained, and my stylist Keeley has given me some of the best haircuts I have ever had. She does a great job of listening to me and cutting my hair the way I want. There are some reviews here that say this place is expensive - I have a bit of a different perspective not being a FT NOLA resident, but the prices are very reasonable compared to what I pay elsewhere. It's always a little scary to go to a new salon. Being from out of town, this place was recommended to my friend and I. Both of us had absolutely perfect colors on our root touch ups. Brittany got an exact match on my friend's red hair, and Daniella did a truly amazing job with my hard-to-handle thick curly blonde hair. Not only was the final color great, but she totally fixed a weird orangey band left by the last stylist at home. Daniella is a miracle worker! I did get one fabulous cut here but otherwise every time I leave I don't have what I wanted when I came in despite extensive communication and photos. My last straw was taking my 15-year old step-daughter in and having her come home crying with a cut that looked nothing like the photos she had taken in and a head full of sticky hairspray. And to add insult to injury the cuts are very expensive starting at $75 + tip. For that kind of cash every stylist should be making sure that people are happy with their hair. I went into the Rocket Science Beauty Bar to get my set of acrylic nails removed, I walked in and Jeanne (Hope I spelled that right!) Was able to squeeze me in. She was great! The set I had on was thick, cracked and uneven on some nails. She was able to take most of the acrylic off with soaking in acetone and filing/buffing it off. She was so gentle and did not hurt me at all! In the past I've had a salon peel off my nails and I didn't know any better at the time. Jeanne made sure she wasn't leaving me with screwed up weak nails. And even though I took the acrylics off my nails still look healthy and not all chewed up. Jeanne was careful and spent about an hour on my nails! She was only going to change me like $10 or $15 too! I gave her a $20. She also sent me home with the acetone she had used on me as well as some buffers so I could work on my nails more at home. In addition to what she did for my nails, I loved chatting with her during that hour. I'm just visiting New Orleans for the week and we talked about the history of the city, the best local bars, and how different the lifestyle is here as opposed to other cities. She was knowledgeable and humorous. If I lived in the city this would be my regular stop for hair and nails! read more

2 years after moving to New Orleans, I finally find someone who knows how to deal with my stick-straight blah-colored hair. Yay for Savannah! She was exceptionally helpful, especially since I had no idea what to do with my hair. All I knew is that I wanted a change in style and some highlights. After discussing it for a while, we came up with a plan, and she went to it. The highlights look great, and so does the cut! It's still stick straight, but now at least has some personality and texture to it... and it's definitely far from blah-colored. Love it!!! I'll be back. In a word AWESOME! My search for a good hair salon has been a long one in New Orleans. I was going to 3 different places, one for perms, one for weaves, and one for cuts. Both of my roomies came here and received fabulous hair cuts (and we all have VERY different hair textures). I decided to come here to cut off permed hair (better known as a BIG CHOP) they turned my nervous transition into an almost spiritual awakening. Katherine gave me the best hair cut I've ever had. Love this place. Love it. LOVE it. After letting my hair grow out for one too many months, I went loking for a salon to give me that new style that said "hey, look at me!". The one I found gave me a style that said something like "hey, look at that poodle dressed like a lady!" So I turned to Rocket Science for help... and I got it, in spades. When I walked in for my scheduled appointment the person I was supposed to be meeting with was still busy with another client. Rather than making me wait, another stylist (Katherine) offered to cut my hair right away. She was fantastic! She listened to what I wanted, made me look amazing, and did it in under 30 minutes. So I've waited to write this review because it pains me to give a bad review to service places, but it's easier to get over a bad meal at a restaurant than it is to get over a disappointing hair experience. I went to Dara based on the reviews I read on Yelp for a cut and color. She was very friendly, personable, etc but she did not cover my grey hair. When I booked the appointment online I said I needed my greys covered. When I was in the chair I pointed them out again. When I left they were still there. I called two days later after contemplating writing a scalding review on Yelp, but figured that wouldn't really help my hair situation, nor would it get me my money's worth. I think I spoke with Savannah the salon owner and she told me to come back and they'd fix the problem by using another formula and/or applying heat to set the color (like most places do). I almost considered buying a box of color and doing the roots missed myself. She told me that she didn't suggest I do that, so I made an appt to come back after a trip I planned. My hair was supposed to be perfect for my trip and it wasn't. So, I went back yesterday and Dara covered the stubborn grey hair by applying a stronger formula to my roots, no heat. I wasn't about to tell her how to do her job. But I did speak up when she nonchalantly applied the color around my crown without looking to make sure they were all covered. I had to insist that she missed some because she didn't part my hair at the front to look for the rest. She finally got them after I directed her where to apply the color more thoroughly. This is was the moment I decided I wouldn't be coming back to this salon. The staff seem young and not as professional or as skilled as the place I'm used to going. I GOT BANGS! they're so now! Everyone at this place is a genius and they should be the first hair salon in space. I was super worried about getting bangs and cutting my hair shorter and now I basically am just about to sign my contract with Pantene Pro V and Victoria's Secret. Dara is amazing. Erin is a sweetheart. I want to be friends with all these girls but they are way too cool for me. Great location and my sister went a few days later to get her hair ombre'd and they did a FANTASTIC job. I am a crazy person about my hair, I'm super protective and nuts about it and I can safely say I will never go anywhere else. For Erin M.'s wedding party "ladies getting ready at the salon together" staff, we really couldn't have asked for a better experience or better stylists/cosmotologists. Seriously cool ladies. Rocket Science reminds me of a less snobby Milio's (Chicago), or a bigger, less metal Hair Metal (Brooklyn). All of the ladies are tattooed, have crazy colored hair, and/or know what it IS. They did a great job of turning us rufians into pretty Southern belles for the wedding - and of avoiding the inevitable bouffants we would have received elsewhere. Erin's hair looks seriously amazing in all of her photos (so did mine and bridemaid-Erin's, but especially bride-Erin's). The most awesome thing was that while we each had various appointments, bridesmaid-Erin and I didn't have makeup appointments, and cosmotologist-Erin (there were so many Erins... so... many... Erins...) took us anyway and did an absolutely beautiful job in no time at all. Everything was just so casual and easy breezy - and these ladies at Rocket Science are performing miracles, all like it's no big deal! Oh, and it was INCREDIBLY reasonably priced. Everyone we worked with was professional, sweet, and entertaining. Even though we all came from up north and had never set food in Rocket Science in our lives, we may as well have been their friends already. It was super comfortable and super fun. I was explaining to Melissa, who did an amazing job with my hair, and Savannah, the owner and bride-Erin's stylist, that my hair had just been cut and colored at Hair Metal here in Brooklyn, and they admired it genuinely and gave suggestions about retaining the red, a difficult color to keep. They were totally professional and helpful. Glynn is fabulous in every way! She recently worked some magic on my hair and turned me into a pink goddess! My hair is pretty dark so it took some work but she made me feel super reassured and I walked out feeling pretty in pink and will definitely go back to her for my touch up! Also....the head massage while washing my hair...sooooo good! The salon is super charming and you get a complimentary beer or bubbles which is always an added bonus! read more
