You can't miss it. Step inside and the corner location pays off -- gorgeous afternoon light pouring through a row of vintage stained glass set above the front windows, throwing color all over the pink-and-white interior. Chandelier with little fabric shades, topiary along the ledge, counter seating to watch the street. Charming spot. One small heads-up: the menu is a digital screen, and it wasn't working when I visited -- so you're ordering a bit blind, leaning on the bakery case and whatever the staff can tell you. Not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing going in. And you're really here for the baked goods, which hold up. The kouign-amann was the standout -- deeply caramelized, lacquered, shatteringly flaky with that signature sugar crust. I also grabbed two macarons (a berry-pink one and a teal with chocolate filling) that were exactly right: crisp shell, chewy center, generous filling. No complaints. The case is stocked with range -- lemon bars, quiche, chocolate cherry walnut cookies, confetti sandwich cookies, Florentines, a vegan peanut butter option, pineapple upside-down, and more. Plenty of GF and vegan labeling, which is nice to see. You can watch them pulling fresh trays from the proofer behind the counter. A few other notes: it's a small operation, so selection depends on what's come out of the oven that day, and the working area behind the counter is tight and a little cluttered (charming, but not polished). Corner parking is street-only and that intersection gets busy. Bottom line -- a genuinely good Richmond bakery with real pastry chops and a beautiful corner space. Get the kouign-amann before they sell out.

The seating is both indoors and outside, absolutely astonishing spots. The staff are friendly and chatty and quick with their services ! Absolutely a lovely spot for yummy coffee AND yummy food. Most places have either or- they have BOTH! Will be returning more than I'd like to admit hehe.

Their menu items are inspired by a variety of international cuisines with a level of respect. Knowing this, it really makes you savor your meal. I get sad that it's not permanent, but I'm also excited for what's next to enjoy for my next visit. I have not been disappointed by their food once. Also, so very RVA of them to set up a restaurant in a beautifully renovated grade school. Also very apt! It's like going to geography class run by classically trained chefs. I always forget to take photos because it is so pleasantly easy to enjoy the present at Blue Atlas and I immediately enjoy their food as soon as it's put down in front of me. If I had to describe Blue Atlas in one word it would be "intentional." Intentional food, design, atmosphere, and being in your own intentional experience because it's hard not to.

They navigated me to some good honey lavender macchiato and one of their signature sandwiches. Food: top tier. So I'm not a sandwich eater but I wanted to try their food. I got the turkey with bacon, provolone, lettuce and tomato on rye. Born and raised in NY, I could never find a decent sandwich in Richmond. This was perfect. And the CHIPS!!! Delish. Def worth a trip back!! 9 out of 10.

This morning a friend and I ordered simply a medium cappuccino and a chai. After what we considered to be a solid 10-15 minutes ( no harm done) I went in to check and the items weren't ready. No problem since mornings can be hectic. 5 minutes later my friend went in to check again, still nothing. Yet another 5 minutes later and this time the owner shouts at me and yells that I am impatient and that they had a big order come in just before we'd ordered. All fine and dandy but the owner continued to shout and berate my friend and I until I demanded a refund ( asking to leave my $2 tip amount. I've heard complaints about this individual before but I'd never experienced his stoic faced rudeness until today. My suggestion is that you avoid this place as much as possible.
