MAN !! This place is DOOOOOOPE !! This is the coolest place to spend your hard earned money ! They have trinkets, and cool little funny gifts. Cool candies everywhere you look. There is sooooo much to look at ! My kids begged for some very inappropriate socks, that I gladly obliged. lol The staff was wonderful also. My daughter's birthday is coming up and she was admiring a colorful bento box and she put it down so my husband grabbed it and went downstairs to pay for it while she wasn't looking.He told the cashier and the cashier said Oh than I better hurry. That was so sweet of him. Also, it is such a MASSIVE place & I was sooo drained from walking around. I kept looking for maybe any chairs to sit down. There is none. I talked to a wonderful kind person behind the counter at the vinyls and they lent me a folding chair. But it was kind of embarrassing because I'm sitting down obviously because I'm fat soooo maybe more chairs around the place. I THINK skinny people like to sit too hehe. Rockin Rudy's is a hidden gem situated just off Brooks Street. Where do I even begin? As you walk in, you are immediately hit with the aroma of incense burning. It's vibe is a combination of hippie, hipster, greaser, stoner, and nature lover. I, in no way fit any of those aforementioned categories, but I still love this store regardless! Rockin Rudy's has ALL SORTS of fun things and many novelty items as well. Looks can be deceiving because from the outside, Rockin Rudy's looks like your average little shop. But once inside, there is so much to see!! The store is set up perfectly because while they have pretty much everything you could possibly want inside, there is still lots of space to walk around without feeling cramped. This place is awesome! My friend's a local and insisted we come here. I'm so glad we did! There's something for everyone! If you're looking for a Montana souvenir to bring back to loved ones, this is the place. If you're looking for local hand-made items, come here. I'm almost sure that visitors don't usually leave without buying something, and luckily, this place does NOT break the bank. About 1/2 of the store included hand-made jewelry of all sorts from local artists. Each display featured a different artist. There's no rhyme or reason, or theme, just cool stuff all over the store. I bought a beautiful hand-made necklace. It was more than what I'd usually pay for a necklace, but it was definitely money well spent. There are also many accessories for the home here ranging from posters to paintings to candles/lotions and everything in between. I come here often; the items they have are wonderful & you simply can't find them anywhere else... However, every time I come into contact with *MOST* (about 90%) of the workers, I feel I get treated like GARBAGE. For instance, just this evening I asked for a bathroom key and the gal working was so rude about it, she acted like I should have known where it was. I've gotten followed around the store as if I'm looking to steal something (I haven't stolen even a piece of gum... I pay for things, I have money). I'll ask a question only to get a very snarky, rude answer. I try to make polite conversation, but they just treat me like crap. I'm not a hippie, I don't dress the part. I'm quite the opposite of what you'd "normally" see around Missoula, but... My goodness, have some respect. Not to mention, every time I check out I feel I paid a fortune only to have a couple items in my bag... My advice, be nice to everyone. We have feelings. I've lived in Missoula for about five years now and I try my best to support local businesses. I really do. But I have to admit: I do not and probably will not ever understand how Rockin' Rudy's is held in such high regard. Out of everyone that I've met that's originally from Missoula, none have liked Rockin' Rudy's. No transplants I've met have liked Rockin' Rudy's. I've never talked to a single tourist that's liked Rockin' Rudy's. Yet apparently people seem to love it because it's always busy. The parking lot has about eight spaces shoved catawampus in an alleyway and if you can both find a spot and leave it again without having a new set of scrapes on the side of your car then you're more lucky than a lottery winner. If you're asthmatic then I recommend bringing a spare oxygen tank because the fog of patchouli smoke hangs so thickly in the air that it feels like night-time in San Francisco. Every cashier will welcome you with a loud sigh and an eye roll because they totally, like, have better things to do if they weren't, like, stuck working for the man, man. The shelves are full of hilarious shirts and knick-knacks that say things like "If I haven't had my coffee, don't talk to me" and "I love cheese". There are a selection of miniature Buddhas in various pastel colors. There are calendars with pictures of puppies. In short, everything you could ever hope to find at your local Dollar Store for the low price of $25 more per wine glass. After all, the sand used to make the wine glasses here was probably blessed by a self-described Taoist monk who achieved enlightenment after meditating on "Imagine" by John Lennon. The store is constantly packed more densely than a Moby concert and smells about the same. If you try to ask someone for help finding something then you'll most likely be met with a shrug. After all, the poster section is next to the dishes section which is next to the whoopie cushion section. "But isn't it all about the experience, man?" you may ask. No, it's about trying to just find a pair of chopsticks in under thirty minutes because they were sold out at World Market. I've personally been here about half a dozen times over the years, each time trying to hope that it will be the time my eyes are finally opened and I see through the fabric of the universe to appreciate Rockin' Rudy's for what it is. But each time I only end up leaving with sensory overload and an incense-induced headache. Who would probably like it here: * Tourists from a big city * Hipsters who say they aren't hipsters so don't you dare call them a hipster (but are absolutely hipsters) * People named Peacelove Waterfall, III * People who own a 1972 VW bus they call "The Shaggin' Wagon" * Jive turkeys who think the above sounds totally groovy and copacetic Who would most likely not like it: * Everyone not listed above So if you've ever dreamed of visiting City Lights Bookstore but the City is like, way too gentrified and uncool these days, and you somehow happen to find yourself in Missoula, and you're desperate to put yourself in an atmosphere that might trigger an acid flashback to your time in the Summer of Love, then this is your place and I honestly hope you enjoy. Total sensory overload! That's the reaction when you walk into the door of Rockin Rudy's. There's just so...much...stuff! And interesting stuff! Just when you think you've seen all the stuff, there's yet more stuff. I'm an avid vinyl collector...I've seen stores that have a much larger section of vinyl records, but few that have the quality of selection that Rudy's has. There's no filler here...just great titles, new and used! There's a whole room of T-shirts. Another of knick-knacks. Tons of posters. Decor. Candles. Games. Puzzles. Bumper stickers. Doo Dads. I had heard that a cat lived in the shop and being the crazy cat lady I am, I had to ask about him. My daughter who is 15 months, adores kitties as well. When I told them abut her loving cats, they went and found handsome Saul to show her! It was so sweet! My whole family went to the shop twice and still didn't get to take it all in. As a reflection of the sad state of music retail, a once legendary record store is now chocked full of knick-knacks and novelties. There is some new and used vinyl but you can do much better elsewhere if you are looking to dig. I did get some pretty great lip balm. +1 for the lit nag champa but -2 for fooling my olfactory senses into thinking I was in a record store. The "Record Heaven" store down the road has much more to offer to music lovers, but it has a very "picked over" feel, likely as a result of internet sales. read more

I was stunned at the size of this place!!! It's kind of like Archie McPhee's (Seattle) meets record store, meets head shop meets souvenir shop. I was blown away by the selection of things and literally got lost trying to find my way out. I got some cool stickers and incense and of course some sour cream and chive flavored crickets to scare my niece and nephew. I remember when they were just a small indy record store on Higgins that would carry music and other...."items" so many years ago. while still quite indy, they've moved, grown, expanded and diversified quite a bit since then. And in the age of mp3 files, bloated CD prices, and chains such as Tower Records and Sam Goodey going out of business, it can be said they won't be going away anytime soon. The knowlegable staff is quite friendly, and shuld be able to find whatever music you're looking for (without attitude). Another Missoula institution. I'm not a huge fan of the silly gifts section of Rudy's. There's nothing there that you won't see at your average Spencer's or other funky, gag gift shop. What I love about Rudy's is the music. No matter how obscure my selection, I've always found it here. They have a decent set up for listening stations, and a knowledgeable and diverse staff. RR's definitely fills the music store void for Missoula, and also should be your go-to joint for White Elephant gift shopping. Bring on the awkward holiday parties! read more

Yeah, so they seem to have everything under the sun here. But guess what? It's really expensive! Everything seemed marked up, except for the incense sticks that were 10 cents each. I think they were burning incense when we were there so you walk in to be greeted by a nasty patchouli cloud. Record Heaven is the music store attached to Rockin Rudy's. Technically they're different stores, but they're attached so it doesn't really matter. We only came to buy some tickets for a show at Wilma Theater. I also left with a small magnet for about $2.50. The bathroom takes a key. They're on the skull of a steer that's stuck on a post with a faux black & white cow hide. Rockin Rudy's is probably my favorite store...ever! It is WAY too easy to spend over two hours in this store - there is so much to look at and see. I come here if I have a free afternoon to just look around and maybe find some birthday/Christmas presents. This store has everything you need and more. It is highly entertaining, offers a great selection, and is just awesome all around. It can be a little pricey, but the items that are expensive are definitely worth it.
