I have been shopping here for years...anytime I am in Missoula it is a "must" on my list. Not just for books, but also to grab a white mocha from the local coffee shop inside the store. You can bring in books to trade at any time (as of this past summer, they did not require an appointment). I love that they are incredibly generous when they give you credit for your trade-in. You can use the credit towards almost anything in the store (a few exceptions). However, they truly have the best selection of new and used books, all at reasonable prices. They showcase local authors and regional books. There are several reading nook areas, where you can sit and relax...and it is encouraged! I could spend a few hours here, easily. In addition they have an eclectic variety of other items available: Artisan cards, stationary, stamps, bookmarks, pens, specialty book related items, music, and more. I have found some amazing one of a kind gifts here, and appreciate the selection. I love to grab a coffee, buy a few inexpensive books, and hang out. read more

I love a bookstore that has both new and used books. This one has a large selection and the prices are fairly reasonable. The children's section is good-sized with a staff person in the area for assistance which can be very useful in locating just the right book. The used books always seem to be in good shape, which I have found not to be true at other used bookstores. They also have a small selection of games and puzzles as well as a little coffee shop with a seating area. I do wish some of the shelving sections were a little expanded/enhanced. They could use a biography section, for example. While there is some signage to assist in locating books without a section, it would still be nice to have a couple more sections to make browsing easier. I also sometimes have trouble finding books by authors that are fairly popular. For me the service can be a bit hit or miss. I've been here when staff is friendly and helpful and there have been other days when it seems folks are not in a good mood. Given that the location is in a popular strip mall, parking can be a challenge, especially on the weekends. Still, it is the best bookstore in the area. read more

Best and friendliest staff, especially the lady that brought my daughter a snack when we were stuck waiting for a tow truck to come unlock the car, you guys let me and my daughter stay in the store until the tow truck got there and I appreciate every one of you so much. There was a point in time when I really liked The Book Exchange, but today I flat will not shop there. Before: I used to like the selection, the thoughtful employee recommendations, and kind of the general vibe. They were nice to my grandma who loves to chat about books. I did hear from a friend I met there for coffee who knew the owner that every time she went in, the owner's husband followed her around the store staring. She was uncomfortable but chalked it up to cultural differences, which, huh? But back then I didn't get any other bad vibes off the place. Then they had, like, complete staff turnover in a very short period of time. They haven't been the same since. It's straight hostile in there, and they can't seem to hire or retain 'good people'. You may have noticed this fits a pattern in their reviews here-- that the older ones are very positive, but in recent years people have started getting notably bad customer service and witnessed some major-turnoff nastiness from staff and management. It is my experience that this is accurate, and I doubt it will change. To get into why would be outside the scope of a Yelp review. But as someone who's lived in Missoula a long time, the difference is palpable. read more

With other book stores in town, there are better places to give your business to. I'm giving this store 2 stars, instead of 1, because of a high selection of books and decent pricing. Minus 3 stars for staff, management, and customer service. Saying hi and having multiple employees just look at you is a rather cold first impression. As I was browsing, an employee broke the news that they had gotten another job. The management was furious to the point of hysterics (like, I watched her slam a phone onto the wall and it fell to the floor). She was hardly using a management tone or behavior while literally hissing and seething at everyone around her. Lady, chill.. You manage a bookstore with like 10 employees working at a time, not a SWAT team of bomb technicians during a hostage situation. Whatever. We went to exchange two books for another and the cashier who obviously wanted to be anywhere but there just said, "We won't be taking these." We waited for a few seconds before my girlfriend had to ask why. He gave a pamphlet styled response of what they accept there. Picky, but at least all of their books are in top condition if you're into that. We went and gave a different book store our business. I'd rather not give a competitor name a shout out in a review because I think that's kind of tacky. But it was The Green Ribbon. read more

Look, I've lived in Missoula nearly my entire life. I've never been able to find what I'm looking for here, I've only ever had a pleasant customer service experience with the Liquid Planet cafe staff (not sure if they're tied to the main staff) and the fact that multiple people have been fired and/or quit over sexual harassment allegations (not to mention the owner's attempts in staff e-mails to justify such unwanted behavior toward their staff) has made me utterly unwilling to put up with this company. Rude, rude, rude!!! My grandson and I went in to pick up a specific book, was in the store a total of 10 minutes. We brought in the two year olds bag of popcorn, ....I know, but truthfully he only dropped two pieces and I put both in my pocket. I grabbed the book I wanted, my grandson handed me his popcorn because he wanted to look at a book in the kids area. We went to pay and I put the popcorn bag on the counter to get my money out, the cashier grabbed the bag, threw it away and told me they do not allow popcorn in the store! I am a rule follower by nature, but he was not given my permission to throw my property away. I have heard over the years about "attitude issues" with this particular store, but have now felt them myself even up to the manager when he was told about the incident. He felt I was "dramatizing" the incident. Won't be back, will not recommend. read more

Just a few things to look out for: 1. IF YOU ARE DOING AND EXCHANGE BRING YOUR CALCULATOR: They miscalculate return rates and will try to give you less than the 40% exchange that they promise. 2. CAREFUL BRINGING YOUR KIDS- THE OWNER HAS A TEMPER AND IS NOT AFRAID TO RAISE HIS VOICE OR ACT INAPPROPRIATELY: If you question policies or the math of the associates the owner may fly off the handle, accuse you of putting him out of business and make your small children cry. I feel bad about posting this review because I understand that we are all going through stressful times, but this scene was so unreal that I felt like I had to say something. My daughter loved this store and chose to spend her chore money here because she loved the experience of going (even though Amazon offered her books for a much more affordable cost). She had calculated exactly how much she should get back for her exchanged books and what she could apply to the next book. I did not feel that the associated miscalculation was on purpose, maybe just an honest mistake- she was very sweet. If it were my money I would not have even brought it up but since it was hard-earned money of an 8-year old, I did not want to let my child be taken advantage of. When I questioned the associated math (how does 40% of $24 equal $5?), the owner caused such a scene in the store that I actually had to have a teaching moment with my daughter about how his behavior was uncalled for and that she nor anyone else should treat or be treated that way. What's not to love about a book store? Decent selection. Every book exchange store is different. You don't always know what you'll be able to find. I have to say that the people stocking or working the floor weren't very helpful. I got the impression they just wanted to do their work & you should be able to figure things out for yourself instead of bothering them. I've been doing book exchanges here for years and I also have purchased new books here because they don't charge way over what the distributor cost is. However, the customer service here is just a gamble or awful. The college aged adults they have working here have zero social skills in terms of professional. If you ask a question you may get a polite answer or more than likely you will get treated with disrespect for even asking them a question or disrupting their work day. Also, you will get a different answer to the same question if you ask another employee. Plus they don't do special orders for customers which makes zero business sense. They sell new and used books. If you sale new books then you should take customer orders. I've never been given a straight answer on why they choose not to do this. It just seems like a very "angry" orientated work place. read more

This is a fun bookstore with a unique selection of books (they have a display full of books by local authors, and it's an exchange place, which is wonderful), but more importantly they have the best coffee shop in town. Liquid Planet has an annex here, and it's a secret gem for a quiet cup of coffee. Nearly all of the baristas are friendly and sweet, and they're good at making drinks! Every time I'm in Missoula, this place is a must stop. I have been able to find several hard-to-find books here, both new and old. It's clean, well organized and cozy. There are quite a few places to rest throughout the store to browse through your selections. Went in and was not acknowledged and when acknowledged she asked if we were there for the coffee shop or the book store and when we said coffee she had the worst attitude. wasn't very friendly at all. I asked for an iced and received a steamed and she aggressively made the coffee and did not say one word. this has happened not once but twice with the same Barista with the first name of Tai. like cmon the girl has nothing else to do but make coffees. good way to ruin my morning with a $6.50 cup of bitchiness. read more

I've had to change my review since moving to Missoula. The first time I went I was blown away by the selection of books and the kindness of the staff. However, while the selection hasn't changed, the staff has. On many occasions since my first visit I have been treated like an imbecile when in the store. I also have received no help when I asked for it and staff is usually seen standing around behind the counter with bored looks on their faces. I have been going to the book exchange in Missoula for 6 years. I have noticed a real decline in customer service in the past year. I am aware that not every book will be accepted as a return but they are accepting less and less. The main complaint I have is the staff's attitude. They are snarky and arrogant. Today as I was about to purchase two books, a clerk said, oh I'm supposed to tell you not to throw books away in the trash outside the store. I said, you are speaking to me like I'm a 10 year old. I won't be back again.... one of the other clerks said, good don't come back! Hello amazon books ... bye bye book exchange. This book store was one of the highlights during my trip in Missoula. Book prices were very cheap, most of the books I bought were 50% of list price in new or like new condition. There is a very diverse selection of books, with a section dedicated to local authors and region specific books. It is true that the service can be lacking at times, but I found the staff to be helpful and nice when asked for help. read more

I adore the Book Exchange and I've been coming here since I was young. They have an excellent selection and the employees are helpful and focused. As another person mentioned, they aren't super into small talk, which is perfect - I don't go to a bookstore to chat with the employees. If I need help, though, they're always friendly and polite. I happened to be in the bookstore today when Gary G was interacting with the employees. He was incredibly rude and was shouting at the manager (I think the employee he was speaking to was a manager - I'm not positive). Honestly, I'm amazed the manager put up with it as long as he did. Sorry Gary, but the fact that you and your sister didn't communicate in at least 10 days after she bought the book doesn't make it suddenly the store's fault. It sucks that she bought a book that wasn't actually wanted and I'm sorry that happened to you guys, but you were intolerably rude to the manager and I'm happy you won't be in there in the future. read more

This is a rating for the liquid planet inside since I can't find this particular address for liquid planet and the bookstore. First time blew me away with the deliciousness of my drink. My daughter not so much. She got some tea thing and im not shitting you, it was milk with a tad bit of honey. No other flavors could be detected. She loved my Mayan frappe though. So we went back today and got the Maya thing again and some raspberry choc frappe as well. What a disappointment :-( it was flavorless and pretty much just ice. My daughter called them chocolate flavored ice drinks. I guess it depends on the person behind the counter. At $4 a drink I won't be frequenting the place as often as I would like because I can make my own flavored ice at home. As far as the books, there are plenty. However, the main reason I stopped by here was because I typed in textbooks on yelp and this place came up. Do they sell textbooks? That's a big fat NOPE. They do buy them from you though. I went to the Book Exchange in search of a cool popup book to give as a gift to my friend's son as his birthday was coming up. I had a specific book in mind after looking online at some reviews (I had no clue what was popular). Unfortunately the Book Exchange did not carry the book I was searching for because they were sold out. That's understandable. What frustrated me was the service I received up to the point of confirming they were sold out. It started with me having no idea where the book was located so I asked a girl at the front desk for help. She advised me that it wasn't her area and told me to go to a different desk where someone else would be. I was hoping she would walk over there to try and help but I decided to just go seek out this other person as advised. When I got to the other desk, no one was there. I spent about 3-5 minutes looking at some other books while I waited for whomever it was to come back to the desk. When it didn't look like anyone was coming, I walked back up to the same girl (she was the only one not busy) and politely advised that no one had shown up and was requesting that she come back. Not giving me a reason why or apologizing about the wait, etc., she just said that the girl would be back and to keep waiting. Reluctantly I went back to the other area again and, after about 3 minutes, a different girl came over (who was much, MUCH friendlier) and checked the computer system in about 30 seconds tops and told me they were sold out. With as many other places to get books these days (especially Amazon, which is where I checked the reviews at for the book I wanted), I really hope that this was just a one-off experience and that the first girl was just having a bad day. Unfortunately, local bookstores cannot afford to have very many "bad days" when there are cheaper prices to be had by looking online. To me, service is what sets local businesses apart from the many different online retailers. read more

I stopped in at the Book Exchange to get something to read as I had gone through what I brought on my motorcycle camping trip. I had a book to trade, got to the counter and asked to make the trade. The woman at the register took my name, address and phone number and then scanned my book's barcode and told me they didn't need it. I thought her taking my PID was overly intrusive when she declined to do the transaction. I told her I was on a motorcycle and didn't have room to keep the book so she should just take it and she did without offering me a dime in trade. I picked up the only Pelecanos they had in stock and a Rick Riordan, and came to the conclusion that their curation is mostly about what people around there read and are willing to sell them. Not too great when you sell both new and used. Ordinarily I'd give an A-OK rating as I really hate to diss brick and mortar book stores, but I really didn't need her to set up an account for me as I live 500 miles away. read more

They have a solid collection, not as big of course as a national chain, however they are locally owned. I hadn't been to the Book Exchange in a few years, so I stopped in today. I bought a used book, a new kid's book, a new graphic novel and a used comic (Superman 75, Death of Superman, for the fellow geeks out there). Upon getting home, I was overcome with curiosity to see what my impulse buys would of been on Amazon. I was surprised, and am happy to say every single item came in under Amazon's price. I saved $1 on the book, $1.13 on the kid's book, $3.69 on the graphic novel, and $0.63 on the comic. That's a total of $6.45 savings, didn't have to pay shipping and didn't have to wait. Bottom line anyone in the Missoula area that is looking for a good deal on books, this is probably your place. read more

The Book Exchange is dead to me. A few weeks ago they called my home and said a book I ordered was in. They spoke with my sister, I was out of town. She went in and picked up the book and paid for it. When I returned she told me about it. I told her I had never ordered that or any other book from them. When we brought the book back and asked for a refund, the manager informed us that because it was more than ten tens since the purchase, they could only refund 25% of the purchase price, in the form of a credit on my sister's account. This for a never opened book returned with the receipt. The worst part, of course, is that I never ordered the book in the first place. It turns out it is available on Amazon for less than 75% of what the Book Exchange charges for it. To add insult to injury, the manager was obnoxious and abusive. I have spent hundreds in this store over the years. Never again. read more

I got that part , But it was like that when I Bought it.. Etc.... and. The Manager Says to me... We Can't take it back , I said that sucks I have no Reason too lie that I got from Their Store. Anyway after that , He says to me O.K He'll give me $4.00 in Store Credit. I said that's Great , And Thank You. So I'm looking for another Book too get , And Long Behold Every time !
