I arrived at 12:15am on a Thursday night and the bar was fairly busy. They were not playing country music (which I didn't expect, despite it being called a "saloon") but people were dancing. The two female bartenders were more worried about taking shots with a few male customers (who obviously couldn't see past the push-up bras and fake eyelashes) than the rest of us and it took 10 minutes to get a drink while sitting at the bar. I asked for a tequila, seltzer, and pineapple. The bartender said, "orange juice"? I corrected her. Then she had the AUDACITY to pour it right in front of me with no juice and say "there's pineapple in there, you just can't see it because I made the drink strong". Honey, this drink is clear - do I look that stupid? Clearly she had one too many shots behind the bar Then, 5 minutes later, the bartender made last call. It was 12:30, so I asked when they closed - they said 1am. I ordered another drink quickly, and the bouncer came up to me and said "we're closing, finish your drink". I said "I'm working on it" and he replied "can you finish it on your way to the door?". I have NEVER been rushed to drink at a bar while they were still open. Meanwhile, the bartender was STILL serving shots to customers at the other end. After all of that, we waited outside for a ride and had the pleasure of witnessing a fight between two wasted women. The manager is so rude. Talks down on her staff and blatantly disrespects the bartenders in front of customers. She even yelled at the customers herself. She was so rude she basically cleared out all the business they had for the night. I felt bad for those 2 girls working. Their names were Kaylee and Kayliana. Very sweet girls. As far as saloons go, this place is solid. The food was a pleasant surprise. I had wings and they were meaty and well cooked. The sauce was hot but not so for hit's sake. An ample serving of fries on the side and bleu cheese with the wings was flavorful and not runny, a rarity in my experience. The bartender Matt was gracious and attentive - a great bartender for this kind of space, which is large and sprawling, since he was able to stay on top of a number of tables all over the place. Prices weren't bad and the beer list was solid. I don't often find eateries all that impressive and I'm not saying this place is a dining destination. But if you're looking for solid saloon food, environment and service while watching sports, this place is a good choice. read more

Quirky Kind of Place. The barkeep 1st served me a beer they were trying to unload. There's a reason for that as it was...... poor. We got over that and moved on to a better quality beer. She also made me a bourbon concoction that rocked. The ambiance is definitely cowboy and the outside deck is very cool. Please train your bartender "Ally" to not be on the prowl for men while she is on the clock! Especially when a couple is there for their date night. I was on a date night with my boyfriend and we were excited to check out this country theme bar since we're from the country & it would feel familiar however our experience became uncomfortable when we sat at the bar and the bartender which I believe her name is ally kept trying to hit on my boyfriend while we both stated out loud to her we're in a relationship when she asked. She kept trying to hit on him. We both got uncomfortable but didn't want that to ruin the evening. We tried to have her make us simple drinks since she said she didn't have must mix cocktail drink experience. Our drinks we're terrible! Who messes up a Long Island, whiskey sour, Moscow mull! We tried to give her several chances to redeem herself... fail! Never again! Zero stars for professionalism if i could. I get being a new bartender but seriously have a bartender who is experienced when a novice is training. Especially when it comes to being professional, not all bartenders need to up sell sex or press on for personal dating agendas for a tip especially when it's unwarranted! The staff gave me the wrong drink, then later told me "it wasn't my fault" that one of them could not find my name in their stack of debit cards (Unprompted - I wasn't blaming her; she just said that after she gave me my card back). I understand that it's not easy to find a debit card, and it's loud and hard to hear, but that was a really bad look considering no one was blaming her. It came off as defensive. Moreover, I don't know why I was served sprite instead of a seltzer without them asking if I wanted something else. I remember her shuffling away while muttering something to me after passing me the drink. I figured out that she must have said she was giving me a sprite after I tasted it. Actually, since I'm paying for it, it's up to me to decide if I will be drinking something I did not ask for originally. I understand that people aren't expecting much in a watering hole, so to speak, but this place clearly is incestuous and has fallen below any standard. Two of my roommates are bartenders in New York and they own the responsibility they have to their client's experience and are very passionate about what they do. 1. If you can't hear your clients, turn the damn music down. 2. Don't take miscommunication personally 3. I moved to Hartford, CT from Miami, FL, so needless to say, I wasn't sure what to expect when going to a downtown bar. Rocking Horse totally surprised me! I had a blast! As a single lady in a downtown scene, you never know how you'll be treated when stepping into a bar full of female bartenders. The bartenders were super sweet, fast, and fun! They wanted to get to know me and treated me like family even though it was busy. They didn't get frustrated when people came in and didn't know what they wanted to drink the second they sat down. This place used to be a lot of fun....not anymore. Last night I was there with a group of friends. We waited 45 min to be served a drink. We ordered each ordered 1 drink and decided we wanted to leave because of the long wait and annoying 22 year olds surrounding us. My friend asked the bartender 8 times (literally counted) for his credit card. The bartenders acknowledged his request and forgot to get his card each of the 8 times. We decided it wasn't even worth and just cancelled the card. Between the immature crowd, ridiculous wait, and amateur bartenders, you can believe I will never be returning to this bar. read more

Let's just say you know what you are walking into. It is a fun night, but definitely not what you would call classy. The good: 1. Cheap beer. You can't really go wrong with cheap 40's, but at the same time... come on they are 40s. 2. Country music. DJ keeps the place going with current country hits that we all know from the radio. A nice change especially in the Hartford area. 3. No cover. The bad: 1. One bathroom. Good luck if you have to take a piss. The bathrooms are way in the back and are single occupancy bathrooms that quickly get overwhelmed and are a nightmare. The men's bathroom is overflowed and it is better not to question what you are stepping in. 2. Floors reminiscent of a frat house. Are they supposed to be that sticky? 3. The environment. I guess this is not their fault, you know what you are getting into, but come on... bartenders dancing every 30 minutes? It just screams trashy and has definitely attracted some more of the "interesting" clientele. read more

I've been to this bar like 6 times now and I have to say I LOVE IT!!! Country music isn't my first choice but when I first walked into this bar I was instantly greeted by 2 bartenders And they acted like I was almost famous! You have to admit that makes anyone feel good about themselves, even every time I go in there there's always alot of girls working so I NEVER wait long to get served, so service A+! Most bartenders are snotty and don't have patience but these girls are the sweetest and so polite, definately got the southern hospitality down oh and drinks are pretty cheap too!! I recommend this bar to anyone! people here are so nice even the crowd I've never even seen a fight here like you do at most bars. Attractive female bartenders serve you cans of beer or shots of fireball (there's other alcohol but who cares). They dance on stumps behind the bar every now and then on Friday and Saturday nights, but it's choreographed, not like strip club dancing, so chill out. Lots of country music and crowd doesn't get rowdy. read more

This is definitely a solid country bar, but i had a couple issues with it that I think are big ones for a bar. We'll go over the good stuff first: 1. They play (from a DJ) current, popular country music. Everything thats on the radio today... Chesney, Luke Bryan, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, etc. The music selection was pretty sweet. There is an area for dancing in the back by the DJ. 2. The drinks are on the low end of the price scale for Hartford. Its inexpensive (they do serve cans) and when I was there on a Friday night it was as crowded as I anticipated (especially if you walk all the way to the back as it tends to get clogged up by the front door. 3. Not too many tables to sit at, but there are some and the decor is pretty typical or a country bar. Now the two items that really frustrate me about this place. 1. THERE IS ONE BATHROOM. its a bar.... with ONE BATHROOM. one men's, one women's, one stall for each. Now, when you have a bar that can hold over a hundred people and all of them are drinking, you might want more than a single bathroom. The line, especially for the women's room is horrendous. I mean 20-30+ minutes kind of horrendous. When there is a line of MEN15 people deep, you know its bad. Guys were actually urinating in the men's room sink, while others were at the urinal. Pushes the line of unsanitary. 2. The "entertainment". Scantily clad bartenders I undersand... hey, its a bar, thats how they make money. But there are three girls that dance up behind the bar every half hour or so coyote ugly style. Weirdly, this isnt even a late night thing. Apparently it happens even at 5pm during happy hour when the bar has like 2 people in it and its still light out. Honestly, its just awkward. I actually felt bad for them. Even worse, no one even really watches them except to kind of laugh. I hate saying this, but for a business I would think they would want attractive girls up there, just for basic marketing purposes... but this was......different. Let's just say i dont think anyone will ever actually go there to oogle over the dancers. Kudos to them for having the confidence to be up there, but based on some of the comments i heard I really felt bad for them. read more

This past Saturday (Sept. 27,2014) I was in the Hartford area and heard a lot of talk about the Rocking Horse Saloon. Being so close,I stopped in to see what all the talk was about. From first glance it looked Very Clean The Bartender was very attentive to my arrival and asked me would I like a Drink. The Prices are very reasonable.The only thing was they had No Kitchen,No Bar Food.But The Owner here also owns The Tavern (Sports Bar/Restaurant) a few doors down and lets just say that is for another Review (Food was Awesome there).They had Newer Country Music playing on the House sound system (Not to Loud). You can carry on A conversation. The Bartender told me they have a DJ that played Country Music (New & Older Stuff. All Upbeat). What do you expect,it's a Country Bar and Country Bars are All About Having Fun & Dancing. After 10pm the place filled up very fast and everyone was having a Good Time Dancing to the Music being played. The Nice thing was the DJ would make announcements To Make Requests. You never hear that anymore in Clubs/Bars. He also made announcements of Drink Specials and I almost forgot,After 11pm,The Rocking horse Saloon has Dancing Girls that get up onto the Bar And do A single Dances. To wrap it up,I Had A Blast my 1st Time stopping into the Rocking Horse Saloon. I am Hoping to make Saturday Nights a Regular thing. read more

Had the misfortune of spending my Christmas in the greater Hartford area this year, but the Rocking Horse Saloon made my trip to New England's Rising Star tolerable. The Rocking Horse Saloon touts a much needed Southern Hospitality in a town with a New York and Boston inferiority complex. Subtract one star for the awkward coyote ugly dancing that only a few (really) old guys seems to have any desire to check out, another for selling 40s of anything, and one more for the eclectic mix of clientele. This isn't really a great bar. I don't appreciate country music so I obviously don't enjoy a bar dedicated to it. What does make this a 3 star establishment is their free Mac-N- Cheese and Fried Chicken during end of week Happy Hours. Unfortunately the only beer special offered at the same time is $3 Coors Banquet drafts. (aka Coors Heavy, "the Coors in the yellow can your uncle drinks" etc.) Come for the free food, leave when you're ready to drink better beer. Went there on a Thursday night. They karaoke and I thought it would be a good time. I come to find out that there is a magic gong behind the bar that makes you stop singing if it is hit. I was one of the of three people who braved the gong. I was told I was to loud to sing and was gonged out multiple times. 3 gongs later I got there a full song (The most stressful song I have ever sang in my life). I will not be returning. Probably one of the best times I've had in downtown Hartford. The staff were all friendly, drinks were reasonably priced and poured strong, and the overall atmosphere was fantastic. The radio ads made this bar sound interesting. It was not. Walked in and ordered one of the "specials" on the sandwich board. Server came back and said it was no longer on special. okay, so paid $4 for a draft domestic beer because they do not serve wine. Really? even most motorcycle bars serve wine nowadays. They advertise "dances" every half hour. The hours we were there on a Saturday night, there was not a single dance by the staff. The staff was not that friendly and we had to sit there listening to our server complain about how a patron tried to hold her hand. She complained to her fellow servers about it for quite a while. Really? if she finds it that upsetting, then she is in the wrong business. After paying $10 to park, we would have been better off driving the extra half hour to go to Cadys Tavern in Rhode Island where the food is great, drinks are truly cheaper, no charge for parking, friendly staff and bands during the day as well as the night.This place was a let down, the only good thing i could say is they do play good music. read more
