We had a really fun night here watching 3 local bands play. There was a super convenient parking garage directly across the street and the bar validates your parking ticket. We didn't try any food and did have to bus the dirty table we sat at ourselves but the staff was stretched thin so no hard feelings. We each had well drinks that came in plastic cups and were good pours. The architecture and sound was good for all the bands and the mixture of people and vibes was fantastic a super cool spot we would def go back for another show. read more

Finally stepped foot into the legendary Arch St Tavern! I was there for Camp Sol which featured three badass female DJs: Sonia Sol, Selector AR, and Kasey Cortez. It's a big space. There was plenty of room for dancing, vendors, and some tables which people sat at. There's nothing special to the space though. I believe the DJs set up the winter theme so without that, it's a great canvas for shows. All of their sets were amazing but Kasey is a beaaaaaast. That girl can spin some tracks, check her out ASAP. There were drinks specials so I stuck to a tequila sunrise. Thankfully I didn't have any issues but my friends drinks were really inconsistent. One of them literally just had orange juice. I didn't get to try food but nothing looked appealing from what was coming out for other people so I didn't feel that I missed out. I can't see myself stopping in on a random day but for a show I think the venue was sufficient. read more

My recent experience was quite different. We purchased 2 tickets to reggae night but were informed at the door that it was misadvertised and there would be a different band. He surprisingly said he wouldn't charge us the cover which was confusing because we had already paid for tickets. The place was full and it took 30 minutes to wait for a table to open that we had to split with another group because there simply was no seating. However the kitchen had already closed, there was only one waitress visible but she couldn't keep up. By 9:45 pm there was no band, no food, no waitress...so we left. I sent a Facebook message to them and received an apology and was offered a refund but haven't received it yet. I followed up but no response. Disappointed in them. read more

The music was pumping and the atmosphere was fun but the fries I got were pretty flavorless and the service was kinda disappointing. My friend wanted a box so we waited for the waiter to come get our check and he seemed more interested in flirting with other members of the staff then working. Went here last night to see a Brass Band. Felt like I was in a college bar with owners that bought a bar with no experience in running a bar. How does a bar run out of liquor, Lime Juice, Limes and champagne on a Friday evening?? Felt bad for the bartenders as they couldn't make half the drinks. The Arch Street Tavern has been around forever at the same location. We chose it as the site of tonight's private industry party and they treated us great. About 50 of our guests were there and we had plenty of room in their dining room and at the bar. We had some very good buffet style food - cheese, crackers, pepperoni, and crudities, toasted ravioli, two kinds of wings, chicken tenders and pasta pomodoro. My favorites were the wings and the pasta. We had great service from Kellie and Lori and the rest of the staff. I saw they have some outstanding Happy Hour deals- appetizers for just $3 from 4:00 -7:00. As we were leaving tonight, a seventeen piece Big Band was setting up! How cool is that?? read more

I stopped in here for happy hour after work and was glad I checked their parking situation. They validate parking for the garage right across the street so that saved time and money! Overall their happy hour is great. Very inexpensive drinks ($3 beers, $5 cocktails) and the food was inexpensive as well. I didn't order any food while I was there so can't comment on it, but the beverages were good and they had a decent beer list. Our server was friendly as well and checked in a decent amount. As stated by many of the other reviews - this place has been around forever and is pretty much an institution for live music and pub food. The building and space are gorgeous - a spacious dining room and high ceillings - perfect for music. That being said the food is good but not GOOD. It's pub food but there is really nothing special about it. I recently ate there and got a House Salad with grilled chicken. Although the grilled chicken was hot - the salad was meh. The salad was a nice size for a lunch portion but their menu is the same for dinner - so I am not sure that this size as a "main meal" would be a good option. I also split a bowl of chili with a friend - it was a bit too spicy and sweet (an odd flavor combination in chili) for my pallet. Looks like they have some good happy hour deals and probably would be a great place to grab a pint with friends or after work - but for a nice meal - I would pass. read more

I really dig the history and feel of this bar. You can tell a lot of locals go here - and have been going here for years. I love the wood paneling and high ceilings, reminding you that this building has a deep Hartford history. Happy hour is lovely, especially on a nice summer afternoon and if you can sit outside. (They do try to make you feel masked from the parking lot just beside you.) I also love their Monday night jazz tradition. This is really where the locals are at! The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is quite good (big band), and there are a lot of fans in the audience. I've only ever been able to get seating in the bar area for the show, but there's still a great view and good-sounding music. read more

First time here. Needed a quick close place for lunch so off we went. It's a typical tavern. Comfortable atmosphere. They offer about what I would expect at a pub, sandwiches, salads, fish and chips, chicken wings . Not bad, however not great. I had the salad with apples, blue cheese and walnuts. It was fine. My friend ordered the steak sandwich and it was average. Service was friendly. We sat at the bar and it was after the lunch rush so busy it was not. So food on this visit was a 2.5 /5 I think the real draw here is the music this place pulls in. We went back on a Monday night this past fall when the Hartford Jazz Orchestra was performing free of charge.The orchestra consisted of about 16-18 musicians. You have your brass, woodwinds, keyboard, bass and drums. It is all there. You can tell they love what they are doing. It shows. Totally enjoyed the night. 5/5 on this visit. My husband and I were visiting from out of town so we looked for something relatively close to our hotel. We arrived once they opened around 12pm. Overall the experience was just ok. We ordered the queso dip and it tasted like canned sloppy joe mix mixed with cheese. It was extremely bizarre. My husband and I both ordered the buffalo chicken wrap and it wasn't anything to write home about. I've had better and I've had worse. I would advise the manager keep the staff off of their cell phones while working. We had to keep flagging our server down because she was in the corner on her phone the entire time. You can catch me here most Monday nights appreciating some good music. The Hartford Jazz Orchestra has been practicing and performing this weekly ritual since the 60s! A local favorite, it's worth the visit, and it's free! Thursdays and Fridays usually brings in decent musicians. And during the summer, the outdoor patio can make this a really nice venue to enjoy live music. Just check their website of FB page for updates. The building was once home to the Hartford Brick Carriage Factory where it manufactured buggies and carriages. The tavern has also served as a firehouse and a truck body shop too. The spacious interior gives way to neat history if you walk around. The tap list is ok, typical fan fare, and prices are average. The food is just ok. I've had a handful of their burgers and sandwiches, nothing to write home about. They do have a great Happy Hour though, from 3-7, you can snag some decent deals. read more

When I walked in I waited for about 8 minutes until I walked up to the bar and asked for a menu and if they had servers available. They did have servers but I wasn't sure why I had to ask for one. It was a Saturday and I was just looking for some lunch and a beer. They have a good beer selection and I got the Philly cheese steak sandwich. After attending CT's Anime Convention with my little sister we stopped by for lunch at the Arch Street Tavern. It was a nice day so we sat outside. It was a quick walk from the Convention Center and the prices sure beat what was offered. The menu was nice and simple which meant it made the selection process very quick. We ordered nachos, the heart beat and a regular cheese burger. Everything was priced at approximately $10 which was a deal for a lunch downtown. I remember it being a very pleasant experience. Even though we were the ONLY table outside besides another group of women having a book club meeting the waitress was still attentive. She checked up on us a few times. The best music on Monday nights - these musicians are amazing. The food here is lackluster at best - and I like bar food so this is not coming from someone who is snobby about that sort of thing. There is a general lack of seasoning on everything we have had here. My friends' tacos were brought without cheese. My fiancé's burger had zero seasoning and we were surprised to be charged $1.00 for some raw onion, especially seeing as she had it with no lettuce or tomato. My Reuben was also missing cheese and it was dry. It took forever to get a side of some extra Russian to make it edible. The wines this place carries are all terrible. The bartenders can't make a simple mixed drink. An old-fashioned should not taste only of bitters. The service is slow at best. I've been here a couple times for both large events (like HYPE) and for dinner/drinks. They serve a decent amount of local beers, and there is nothing wrong with the food, everything came out timely and was correct to what we ordered. That said, there was also nothing exceptional about the experience either. Its clean, the service was fine, the ambiance is a Cheers-esque American bar (with some New England/Hartford highlights), but it is all American bar food. If you are looking for a beer, wings, a burger, and maybe a salad, than this will fit the bill. Anything more, there are other places that specialize. read more

Favorite downtown spot to catch a live music show. Happy at their full bar that they serve non alcoholic beer as someone who wants to be able to go out, catch a game or concert, and not drink alcohol. The seating is a bit awkward and when it gets crowded it can be hard to find a seat that's not blocked by the plants they have on the seating dividers. The Arch Street Tavern is such a textbook Tavern. A long inviting bar always has a motley crew of people in their cups, the rest of the ambiance is the sort of old school/dated style that accompanies a Tavern, but in a good way. Their food offerings are catered more towards a happy hour session than a proper sit-down, but the Chips & Dip will hit the spot if you don't mind the calories (I don't). Their service always seems pleasant if slightly overwhelmed at times because it always seems like there are 3 people working a such a large space. I frankly would've gone 3 stars due to the average food and uninspired beer selection, but the bar area server seems to be so pleasant and accommodating, it brings the vibe up considerably. The food here is fantastic. The service is extremely lacking. I'm in town for a convention, once a year, and we generally hit Arch Street Tavern once during the week. It's always the exact same story... what should be an hour or so turns into a much longer, painful affair. Sometimes it's food taking way too long, or drink orders being forgotten, or a check disappearing. But it's always just slow. If you only have a two-hour break in a schedule for food, this is murder. Just one example... I was in town, this past weekend, for that very same convention. My group decided to go there on Thursday night, before there would be crowds and before we had a schedule to keep. We grimaced at a sign, outside, advertising that tonight was karaoke night, starting at 8:30. But, it was only 7, so we might be able to avoid it. There were a few other folks in the place, but it was largely vacant. That didn't stop our food from taking over an hour to hit the table. My buddy, twice, ordered refills on his beer, and never got them. Jokingly, I ordered the same thing, declaring it a contest to see who would get them first. They finally came at the same time. Meanwhile, our server is just standing on the side, texting. When our food came, the reubens that most of us ordered were fantastic, as we were expecting from previous visits. My wife ordered mac and cheese, and was upset that the portion was tinier than she expected for $11. She tried to complain that her food didn't match the description from the menu, but was blown off by the server. Karaoke started, and we really wanted to leave. Our pleas for the check went unheeded. The populace was sparse, so not many folks were singing. In between acts, the DJ would play annoying pop music, way too loud. Casual conversation was now impossible. When I finally got tired of all this, I went up and demanded the check from the server. She brought it, but not at all split like we wanted it. And the beers that were ordered and not delivered were there, still. I would recommend avoiding this place, until they fire all the servers, and make it a better experience. Asked bartender if I could sample 2 new IPA's and was answered with "you're not buying a car dude, if you don't like it just drink it and move on". Rude as fuck. Then one day I needed a break from the road and stumbled across this place -- high ceilings in a historic brick building, with an open yet cozy feel. Brass-rail bar with friendly people on one side, tables on the other, and on Monday nights, the excellent Hartford Jazz Orchestra. Reminds me of someplace you'd find in Providence. Hartford may be far from the level of cool The New York Times real estate section recently tried to make it out to be, but this is at least a good start. read more

Made the mistake of ordering food here and surprisingly did not end up with food poisoning. Their Nachos are basically plain Tostitos tortilla chips straight out of the bag topped with shredded store brand cheese and then heated in a microwave. The worst part is that they just went with the original Tostitos chips; they couldn't even go with the scoops style smh. You can tell the cheese is cheap because it doesn't melt on top of the chips. It melts on itself and forms a hard, isolated layer. Cool interior and worth the visit for the live music and bar scence. But just stick with beer. read more

I went to Arch Street Tavern for an event. No fault of the establishment (more of the coordinators) the venue was far too small for the number of people who attended (~200) and due to the set up of the restaurant/bar (permanent booths and tables) there wasn't much that the venue could do to better accommodate us. Upon our arrival, a live 80s-style band was playing, creating a lively atmosphere but populated by 40-60 year olds. When 200 20-28 year olds showed up, things got very crowded. Drinks were reasonably priced and we also had ordered a small food section, complete with a vegetable and cheese and cracker platter, baked rotini pasta, chicken tenders with three dipping sauces, and fried mac and cheese. The food was pretty decent although not particularly flavorful in general. Overall, the Arch Street Tavern may be good for a resto-bar dinner or getting together with friends for a reasonably priced meal and drinks, but I would not recommend it for a large event. read more

Walked over after a visit to the CT Science Museum during lunchtime on a Saturday. Place was pretty much dead, which was fine by us. Nice atmosphere; very tavern-y. Food was really good. Menu called out the corned beef as being the "best in Hartford" so had to give it a try on a reuben. Lived up to the hype. Thick cuts of tender and flavorful beef. Fries were outstanding and even the kids' chicken tenders were top-notch. As far as the food goes, 4 stars for sure. read more
