Don't think you can get much better for student housing in Ship. New, clean, quiet. Right behind the 24hr Giant's. Nice place.

Only had one other person staying here besides me, but I can imagine it would get noisy when it's busier. Only small complaint is that the shower needs to be more thoroughly cleaned out. There was some muck and an old bandaid pushed into the corner. Took advantage of the $3 for laundry service and used their super new washer and dryer. Was so happy to clean the muck off!

The second floor was reserved for females and the first floor was reserved for males. One of my hiking friends paid for my stay (I think it was $25) and it included dinner and breakfast. I was given clean sheets and a pillowcase in a ditty bag. On the bunk beds were a mattress covered in plastic, a pillow covered in plastic and a blanket. I slept on top of the sheets in my sleeping bag to keep warm, I like my sleeping bag (personal preference). Not sure if laundry is self serve or if the person who works there does it for you. Our group was on a tight schedule and I had not time to do laundry. The place was very CLEAN. The showers had excellent water pressure and the water was HOT. The hospitality was awesome! Our group will be coming back two more times to visit and stay. We loved it there. There is also a small General Store very nearby that serves DELICIOUS sandwiches until 6pm.

Fig jam, sauted mushrooms, bacon, Munster cheese, half pound burger... and it was delicious! Asparagus was just the way I like it. The fries were hot and crispy. The bottle of beer was icy cold. Don't you love it when you get in the car after leaving a resturant, thinking, wow, that was perfect. There was an out-of- state foursome near our table who commented to each other how much they loved the building and toasted their friend for picking the resturant.

Burger and beer hit the spot though. The hostel portion is decaying and dirty, and has a reputation for being so, almost like they try hard to make it super run down - like hippies took over some abandoned building and started living there. Even with that expectation it was still a little bit too uncomfortable. Dirt all over the floor in my room with some rugs slapped over the floorboards to hide it, filthy bathrooms where I still felt dirty after taking a shower, and really bad WiFi where I couldn't upload any videos or photos (LTE was much faster). A hornet was flying around the exposed ceiling on my first bathroom visit. A few shelters have definitely been cleaner and more comfortable. Will let the photos do the rest of the review.

Because of her traveling, Laurel is familiar with what makes a good hostel, and accordingly provides those perks - clean beds, free soap/shampoo/conditioner, all you can eat waffle breakfast, hang-out common area for socializing, shared kitchen, board games, and bike storage locker. There's even a world map for you to pin where you're from. (Sidebar: As you'd expect, the clientele are outdoorsy folks (hikers and bicyclers), so they're on the younger side. Which is a bit different from the Teahorse website which shows a bunch of older folks congregating together.) There are a few down sides to this hotel though, which is why I knocked the rating down a star. Beyond Laurel's control, the hostel is about a mile from Harper's Ferry and that mile is 95% steep uphill, which wasn't especially fun on a bike. (It's also technically not in Harpers Ferry but the next town over.) The price is also a bit on the steep side for a hostel. We paid ~$145 for a room (consisting of 4 bunk beds). If you're renting just a bed, you'll also pay ~$35 a person, and could possibly end up in the shared room for 8. Maybe these are Harpers Ferry prices, but I know of hostels in downtown Boston that charge about the same price. Overall though, I enjoyed my experience here.

I then had to file a dispute through my credit card and text the owner multiple times in order to get refunded. The owner wouldn't contact directly until I had to find their number on their now defunct website. They repeatedly told me to stand by for refund, however it wasn't until I found their account on PayPal that I was able to request a refund. I was again told to stand by multiple times before finally getting a refund. Unfortunately this experience left a disappointing impression of Baltimore for me on my holidays.

Upon arrival, the man who lives at the hostel said "we have small lockers that do not lock. If this does not meet your needs, we can refund your money,." He needs to be trained in what makes for good "customer service", before he will become a valuable part of the staff. After some back and fourth exchanges, he said "there is a place where your things can be locked up, but you will not have access to them unless you connect with me".

Thankfully we got a ride from some good samaritans to Dan's place that evening. Dan is so nice and hospitable! He fixed my flat tire for me while my bf and I were out having dinner. His house is very accommodating. The room we stayed in had 2 beds in it, so I think 3 people could probably fit in a room. Dan makes breakfast for you and even bakes his own bread. You can tell Dan is very passionate about the C&O trail and loves what he does. We talked a lot about the conditions of the trail and what's going on in nearby towns. Also, Dan's house is very close to the trail. After we left, it only took us a few minutes to bike from his house and get back on the C&O. If Dan has space at his house, I would highly recommend staying with him.

Camping in the muggy heat with the bugs was not appealing. Someone on the trail referred us here. We met Dan and were very pleased with the reasonable $25/person/night rate. The cell coverage is spotty but Dan is very hospitable and even drove into Cumberland to pick us up pizza for our 4-man group. There were 2 other guests staying here so it had a feel of a hostel but it was great considering the free WiFi, hose to wash the bikes in the driveway and an inviting atmosphere.
