Also, take time to read the other reviews and you will see a consistent pattern of criticism on the impervious Dr. Clark and his sub-standard team. Here's my story from a few weeks back. I rarely call any doctor's office needing to speak directly to the physician, but I encountered an urgent medical situation while traveling in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I was diagnosed with a detached retina, and the local doctor advised that I needed immediate surgery the next day. Uncomfortable having the procedure abroad, I wanted to fly back to Washington for treatment, but the doctor in Mexico advised against air travel. Desperate for guidance on the risks of flying with a retinal detachment, my wife called Dr. Clark's office, in tears, explaining that it was an emergency. Instead of helping, the front office staff acted as gatekeepers and refused to put the call through. They eventually transferred us to a technician who had no clear answer and seemed surprised by the question of air travel with a detached retina. After the "tech" noted I had asked a good question, she offered to ask the doctor. Dr. Clark's initial response relayed through the tech was entirely unhelpful and noncommittal: "I don't know. You have to talk to your doctor there." I wasn't asking for a definitive medical clearance--I simply needed to understand the risks and guidelines regarding air travel with this condition. When the technician finally connected me directly with the doctor, his very first words to me were that I was "lucky" that he took the call... "I don't talk to patients-- my staff handles calls." I was stunned by the complete lack of empathy and professionalism. When an established patient is facing a terrifying medical emergency in another country, they deserve basic guidance and human empathy--not hostility. He was defensive and kept arguing with me. Again, read the reviews. There is a pattern. This review will get another defensive answer, same as the others-- including the patient he made cry. For Dr. Clark, it seems he's always right, and the patient is always wrong. How does he stay in business with a 2.9 rating and a lot of great choices in our area? My wife and I will be taking our care elsewhere.

Naturally, about 15 years later, I needed another correction and returned to Dr. Whitten for a consultation. During that visit, he recommended monovision, given my age at the time (late 40s). He explained that this approach would allow me to balance both near- and far-sighted vision without needing reading glasses, which many people begin using in their 50s. However, after the procedure I immediately noticed difficulty seeing clearly. Over the following year, I continued to struggle with my vision--particularly problematic in my work as a professional photographer--and sought evaluations from multiple optometrists and ophthalmologists. I then discovered that the LASIK procedure had been performed on the wrong eye. When I returned to see Dr. Whitten, I learned that neither he nor his staff had ever determined my dominant eye prior to surgery. In fact, my old patient notes from 2020 confirm that no such test was performed. Despite this, no apology was offered for the mistake. During that visit, I was seen by John Rogers, a technician and former Senior Surgical Consultant at TLC Vision. His background includes attending Computer Tech of Pittsburgh, but he has no formal education or degree in optometry or ophthalmology. He suggested inappropriate options such as cataract surgery (for which I am not a candidate) and during the same visit Dr. Whitten suggested undergoing yet another LASIK procedure (a third) to correct the issue or resorting to contact lenses--the very reason I had LASIK in the first place. This experience left me with the strong impression that the practice prioritizes business and profit over genuine patient care and vision correction. I regret not doing more thorough research before returning for a second procedure, as I have since learned of multiple malpractice lawsuits filed against Dr. Whitten, including Jamie Domeier vs. Mark Whitten, David Cantalupo vs. Mark Whitten, and Liesl Nichols vs. Mark Whitten. I also couldn't help but notice the promotional posters displayed across his offices, highlighting his LASIK surgery on Tiger Woods in 1999 as a marketing tool to brand himself as a "celebrity" doctor. Unfortunately, beyond the image, his apparent lack of attention and care for patients has led to a troubling number of lawsuits.

I recalled that there was a "Lifetime Guarantee," so recently I followed up and requested a consultation for an enhancement. My mother recently passed away, and I haven't been able to find any paperwork for my procedure (which was 15 years ago). I called the office, and they were able to find my file. They asked me how long I'd been going to the eye doctor, and I said about 5 years (since I had a baby and my vision declined). I arrived at the consultation, and it went well. Friendly office staff, etc. I was excited to find out that I was eligible for an enhancement in both eyes. As I was about to leave the appointment, they sat me down with someone to "review paperwork," which is when she informed me that since I hadn't had a full vision evaluation annually since my surgery, I wasn't eligible for the "Lifetime Guarantee" and that I would be charged $3,000 for the enhancement. I asked why it was expected to go to vision appointments annually when you have perfect vision, and she said "company policy." I understand that they are legally in the right, and I'm sure I was informed of this as a teenager; however, I feel taken advantage of. It felt like an ethically ambiguous money-grabbing situation. The surgery went well and I'm sure Dr. Whitten is very skilled; however, the follow-up experience was poor. Be cautious.

I have been a patient with Dr. Fein for 3 yrs. I see her once a year and sadly I am accustomed to…read moreit taking from the moment I check in to checking out 90 minutes. Today I went in for my annual appointment and 90 minutes later I still hadn't been seen by the doctor. I said something to the checkout desk and was told that the doctor had an emergency and that I would be seen next. This is at 4:30pm and I arrived at 2:50pm for a 3:00pm appointment. At 4:30pm even though I had been told I was next there were about eight other patients that had been waiting at least as long as I had and the woman lied. Someone else was called into the exam room. I had had it and with vision blurred I told the office staff that I was leaving and would never return. All of a sudden an office manager came out to listen to me and I made sure he knew that for two days I had been receiving texts from their practice making sure I was going to be on time and filling out forms online so I could make things speedier at my appointment and even though the office had known for hours that the doctor had an emergency not a single staff member came into the waiting room to let us know and give us the option of rescheduling or approximately how long the wait would be. I'll be 65 at the end of the year and work a full-time job. Had to take time off work and so did my sister to drive me to the appointment. Most of the waiting room was filled with folks much older than me with their care takers. The Retina Group of Washington in Fairfax Va can care less about their patients and their patients' time. Worse, as I was storming out, the woman who checked me in said "let me see if I can get you a tech" and I was like I had all the tests done already and she said "well the tech can tell you whether or not your tests showed anything". I was like what!!!!!! You would think that if Dr. Fein was taking care of an emergency that maybe they can come up with a backup plan like techs decide if a someone really needs wait to see the doctor today and which patients can be rescheduled to meet with Dr. Fein at a future date because the tests look fine. I am certain this isn't the only emergency that has happened with the docs that are part of this practice. I will be finding a new retina specialist and this time I will be reading the reviews first.
