To get there by roads, you must pass through Asharoken, a locals-only kinda town, known for its radar detectors and speed trap-police force. I'll just say it makes for a nice bike ride. To see the lighthouse over the Sound, look just west of the four LILCO towers (It has a fixed Fresnel lens that doesn't blink or rotate). There is also an active Coast Guard station on-site here which, though closed to the public, can be arranged for groups and private tours. They have answers to all your questions. Some amazing things to see, many of which will really give you pause for thought about life 100+ years ago as well as the valor of firemen through the decades. It's housed in the Village's original 19th century firehouse. The community came together to preserve this structure and found the museum. If you're nearby, make it a point to stop in here for 20 minutes or so and get immersed in important local history. Children will enjoy it too. Well worth the $2 admission (kids free).

Still to this day I am able to get the duck food so that I can go across the street and feed them! This never seems to get old to me and I really appreciate how genuine and aged this place is. I have only bought duck food here but I would definitely love to come back and check it out more so I can learn more about the area that I have grown up in. Supposedly this place is haunted and it adds to the cool, old effect of visiting such an old grist mill. Definitely recommend, just beware of the very limited hours!

Not only is it cheap but it is healthy for the ducks and geese. This place also provides tours on weekends. It is a functional mill and a great historical landmark. I often see swan in the area and they would often make nests in the lower basin outside. Overall this is a really cute place to stop by and please get the bird seed as bread and other human food are bad for the birds.

A former educator, her explanation of the exhibits in correlation to how the Indigenous peoples of Long Island lived, is fascinating! We learned about how some artifacts not native to Long Island were found here. How the museum was founded. And about important local historians whose contributions and collections are invaluable. The museum is a rich source of information for archaeologists interested in Long Island American Indians. We used a Groupon but, would have gladly paid the nominal fee of $10 to enter. We also purchased some souvenirs from the gift area. Please consider supporting them as they continue this important work. There was a new exhibit that was being worked on. We plan on returning once it's completed.

The Southold Indian museum is well worth a visit if you live in or are visiting the east end of the…read moreNorth Fork. My grandparents lived in Southold, and I spent a lot of time there every summer as a child. But I had never visited the Indian Museum before, and I suspect lots of other locals and regular summer visitors are in the same position. The museum is only open on Sundays from 1:30 - 4:30 PM (with some Saturday hours during the summer.) They're obviously very low on funds; entry is free with a $5 suggested donation, so please give if (and what) you can. Inside is one large room with lots of artifacts, mostly pottery and arrowheads, with some interesting informational displays about how the local tribes lived. (Did you know that lacrosse was originally a Native American game?) Most of the artifacts are from the Long Island area, but there are some from other areas, too (Plains Indians, and Mexico, for example.) The oldest arrowheads are in the back left corner, and are 10,000 years old! The displays are not overly slick, but that's not a bad thing -- it lets the objects speak for themselves. You won't need to spend a lot of time here, as it's a very small museum. But it's just the sort of under-visited and under-appreciated local gem that makes for a memorable visit. Why not stop by between wine tastings sometime? Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the best (or at least, most ironic) part: the Indian Museum is located directly across the street from the Custer Institute!

Visited for a holiday event. Lots of vendors selling a variety of items. From soaps, jewelry,…read morechocolate and Boy Scouts selling wreaths. They had most of the vendors inside the barn or whatever it was and it was pretty cramped. We had to squeeze past people a few times. We browsed around and walked outside. It is situated on lots of land. Walk down the path and you'll see a still in use come the Spring, an old time baseball field. Keep walking and there's a farm. The kids enjoyed seeing and petting the horse, and sheep. There were chickens too. I would like to return when we can learn more about the property and the various houses on it. When you're standing on the one path, you're set back away from Main Street and it feels like you're transported back in time. The 3 star review was based on the holiday event we went to after thanksgiving.

Mather, now houses antiques from the 1800s like old ships and paintings, hats and fabrics, toys and furniture. There's also an old lock exhibit, and other small exhibits on the property as well. A 1937 Shell station and garage exterior, with vintage signage, gas pumps and a tow truck. Peer through the window at the restored office. The station was restored by volunteers in 1990.
