Rodeo's is the place to go for non-bakery treats in Makawao. Love this store, so many fun things to find and the staff is great. Local products including meat, eggs, fruit & veg are available, and rather reasonably priced. If you're not a Costco addict, you'll find the prices are equivalent to local grocery stores. We got farm eggs and local steak for less than what would be paid at Safeway or Foodland. Like many local stores, Rodeo offers warm ready to eat foods like spam musubi, breakfast wraps, and plate-lunch style meals at the deli counter. They also offer local and imported ingredients, including for some reason many products from Mexico. I picked up a dark Oaxaca mole here that was incredible. They have bottled Coke from Mexico as well. There's also a large selection of cold drinks, inexpensive and otherwise. A can of flavoured water costs $1, good deal and refreshing. Kombucha is available in bottles and on tap. Add to that a huge alcohol and tobacco selection, and an impressive cigar humidor! There's something for everyone here, and you gotta love the local general store ambiance. It's deceptive from the exterior how large the store is, and one would never expect the variety of products inside. A beautiful day in Makawao. There's not much to hype or explaination about this place. And I dont mean this in a bad way. It's got something for anyone wanting to grab a drink or bite. Theres a shop area for snacks and drinks and some souvenirs. The best part was the deli and food section of the shop. I would say try a few of the side options they have in the fridge. I got the ono salad (10/10) with a bagel. The auntie there said it was their best seller and man she wasnt wrong. Makes for a great little lunch. Pair it with the POG slushy. Makawao, HI. I found that this store is a very good solution to grabbing a good bite to eat and avoiding the expense of a restaurant. There is quite a large selection of hot and cold food items available, and the ladies working here are exceptionally friendly and helpful. We were offered tastes of any counter items and given two avocados. I ended up getting a large salad that was excellent and the sesame chicken wings that were delicious. When the cashier realized we were walking, she rebagged our purchase into a double bag with handles. read more

Wow...Rodeo General..something special in Makawao. How amazing is the food coming out of the hot bar at Rodeo general these days?!! IMHO Had to walk into a store called "Rodeo General Store"! Wasn't looking for anything in particular but ended up finding the one thing I'd been searching for, for years! After a security guard had me throw away this perfectly shaped water bottle at an event (no water bottles allowed, filled or unfilled...), I've been waiting to return to Maui and find that bottle again. Believe me, it's the perfect size to carry in my purse without taking up too much room. However, the search was fruitless in many trips. (I am very picky!) While perusing the Rodeo General Store, I glanced into the refrigerated section and saw my tiny water bottle!!! My daughter grabbed two of them!!! I didn't care how much they were, but they rang up at 99 cents each! I know this is a weird review, but Rodeo General Store, made my trip!!! Oh, and they've got a great house cat too! read more

Located right in the downtown area of Makawao, it was restored in 2019 and won Small Business of the Year in 2020 for keeping community needs in mind while also sourcing from local farms and vendors, you can find many "Maui" made goods here including an amazing sticker I bought. Yoshizu Fish Market opened in 1927 at the site and was part of Takeshi and Miki Yoshizu's home. The site became a meat market during World War II, and later became a general store called Yoshizu Market. In 1979, Rodeo General Store was born. Inside it feels like a upcountry general store with food items on industrial shelving, firewood, and a small deli and prepared warm foods. There is a huge wine selection in the back. I tried the Char Sui Manapau here, Manapua is an evolution of the Chinese steamed char siu bao. The Chinese introduced char siu bao to Hawaii during the plantation era in the 1800s. In Hawaii, the buns evolved to be bigger with a toasted outside and a sweeter inside filling. read more

Awesome shop, had a great selection of products unique to Maui. I loved the coffee I bought and the fresh eggs. The first time I went there I wasn't impressed with the staff. They rang me up without talking to me or looking me in the eye and I found that a bit rude. The second time I went for eggs was in the morning, and one of the same ladies from the previous exchange was there and was nice and talked to me a bit. So idk if the first experience was a one off. Service was friendly. I am really impressed by the beverage selection: juices, waters, beers, a serious wall of wines, kombucha on tap! Very clean, too. My breakfast burrito was a good size for the price $10... but I think itʻs discounted after a certain time? It was 10 AM. My total bill including a $1.50 water ended up being a little over $10. I didnʻt ask for a receipt so I do not know for sure. The burrito itself was little meh. It needed a bit more salt, and cilantro and onion would have been nice, or even salsa packets. I was looking for lunch grubbage after finishing a job in the Pukalani town area the other day, and my usual "goto" joint - the Pukalani Superette is my normal calling for da "Chili Frrrrrrried Chicken"..............but for some strange reason that day, Bruddah Fran was not feelin' it on Tuesday, so he opened his Yelp app. to see if there was another place to eat in the Upcountry area. Upon looking through Yelp, he came across this place called - Rodeo General Store. Where is this general store located? In Makawao my friends...........Makawao is just a short drive over from the Pukalani area. Originally I was gonna say it was a hop, skip, & jump away..........when in actuality, you really need a car to get there (it's about a 5 to 10 minute drive to Makawao), as walkin' would just take too long! Upon arriving at the Rodeo General Store, I realized the store was just a hop, skip, & jump away from the T. Komoda Bakery (and yes, it's kinda across the street from each other). There is no private parking lot for the Rodeo General Store, so you will have to see if you can get one of the free street parking spaces along the main drag of the Makawao neighborhood. Lucky for me when I had got to the Rodeo General Store, someone actually pulled out of a parking stall that was just in front of the Rodeo General Store, so Bruddah Fran did his "Bat Turn" in his Batmobile...........Er, more like his "Putt-putt Rentalmobile" & swooped into the parking stall! As I walked into the general store, I could clearly see that this store was geared more like a convenience store, as I saw an array of "ready to eat foods". The store had fresh "ready to eat" - sandwiches, poke, salads, bakery items, a hot food section, & even ice cream. If you needed something to drink, perhaps you could check out their wine section, or the coolers that were filled with all types of drinks. If you want coffee, I saw that they sold an array of coffee that is locally grown on Maui. If you walked into this store expecting to do grocery shopping............. yes, they do sell some grocery items, but the shelf display appeared to be limited on the type of grocery items they offered here. As for me, I basically came here to get something to eat for lunch, so upon looking over the pre-made hot food section, I decided to get a Turkey with Mash Potatoes & Gravy bowl. What can I say about the grub? For pre-made hot food, it was pretty darn good! They actually served up real turkey..........not the processed turkey loaf thingy you would get sometimes from a sandwich shop. The mash potatoes were really buttery good, and of course you cannot eat turkey & mash potatoes without any gravy! Prices here were pretty much in line with this type of general store in a remote area like Makawao. The Rodeo General Store is great! They have a bit of everything, including an entire aisle of booze. Prices are a little high, but to be expected. Good drip coffee (dark roast) is weirdly difficult to find in Makawao, but the RGS has you covered! In addition to a good selection of coffee to make at home, they have three roast levels brewed up everyday; including both dairy and non dairy cream options. Most days, there is a small selection of fresh fruits and veg (papaya, lychee, dragon fruit, citrus, avocados, garlic, etc), some prepared hot foods (sandos, lunch plates, pasteries, salads, and poke), and some pre-coffee trivia that is so bad it's funny. Staff are super friendly and chat with locals and tourists alike. The store has laid back, island time ambiance about it that is always inviting. For the month I spent in Makawao, I stopped by RGS at least once a day. Y'all are fantastic... keep it up! read more

I understand that only two venecin packages are for each home and so did my daughter who resides somewhere else. Why the female deli clerk thought it was appropriate to come out from her counter walk directly up to us to reinerate the rules and when I told her we live separately she repeated herself as if she didn't believe me. I was very grateful to receive the gift, however I felt attacked due to skin color. Heads up deli worker I am white and I have lived here my entire life. That is not a disqualification. Gayle, Erin, Jim, and I had an amazing ride "Down the Volcano" last week courtesy of Mountain Riders. We reached Makawao for our "Lunch" break, which was more like 10-10:30, of which we wandered over the Rodeo General Store (with the green awning) for some food and refreshment. There was also a cool white cat hanging out in one of the empty parking spots. I went for a premade breakfast sandwich, while the rest of our family group headed to the deli counter for some specialty sandwiches. Banana Gelato was awesome. Wholesome goodness, for sure. This store has a lot to offer for locals or tourists passing by. The have a deli, wine and beer room, gelato station, and everything else a convenience store would sell. I heard their poke is the best seller in the area but we were too full from lunch to even try. I thought it was pricey throughout the store but you can find a lot during a visit. The checkout clerks were friendly and were very laid back (living up to Makawao's countryside vibe). read more

Fun, offbeat grocery, sundries store on the main drag in Makawao. They offer everything from wine and spirits to locally made BBQ sandwiches. Worth stopping in just for the "Dad Joke of the Day." It is posted on a signboard at the entrance to the store and to get the answer you need to ask the cashier. Sweet little place, named in honor of the towns rodeo which is held every year on July 4th. read more

What the heck they didn't have what I needed. This store is located in makawao town so it's close to my house.. I come here If I need something. I've been coming here lately for certain things like vegetables but they didn't have it. They have pre made food that you can pick up. When we discovered the sandwich shop we planned to eat at was closed, we purchased some sandwiches at Rodeo General Store. There were not date or time stamps on the sandwiches, so we had no way of knowing how long the food was in the deli cabinet. Since we were starving,we ate the sandwiches. This is a really neat place to pop in while window shopping in Makawo.  I got a hot cup of coffee and a newspaper on an unusually rainy and cold day.  My wife and I also got their daily special tacos and cold salads for dinner.  Everything was homemade and tasted really fresh.  There are a lot of out of the ordinary grocery items lining the shelves as well that were neat to browse.  The staff was incredibly friendly, including the cat on the front counter who is something of a mascot from what we understand. read more

Rodeo General Store has a lot happening in its' space. They've got coffee, wine, kombucha, gelato, a deli and even fresh fruits, veggies and dairy. On top of all of that they've got soups, pre-made hot meals and a mini bakery area with donuts, muffins, and long johns. Great place to pick up a thing or two if you're in the Makawao Town area. They are currently running a special on their alcohol products. Mix and match 6 different beers for $13.99. So, if you're excited to taste test this would be a good time to pick up something. I had their vegan dolmas. Highly recommend them if you're a fan of tangy flavors. The leaves were not soggy they still had a crispness when you bit into it. The dolmas were well filled too. They also have vegan and vegetarian options if you look around quite a bit. Staff was helpful and welcoming. I was browsing for a short while near the deli and was immediately asked if I needed assistance (can't go wrong with that). The cashier even reminded me about my utensils before I left the building. Keep an eye out for hand made signs for sale items. They also have their solid color hydro flasks on sale. Word to the wise, if you have mobility issues the floor is not level in the store so be careful when you walk. Parking is also limited to what you can find on the street parking. If you've got the time to park further away and walk it might be better than waiting and circling for a stall. read more

WINE SHOP alert! This darling little hometown general store had the most awesome wine room!! Fabulous selection of international and domestic (think CA) wines! Went in because we needed some travel toiletries and discovered an unexpected and dynamite chilled wine room. So cool. Between this place and bakery across the street you can get a great meal. I have enjoyed all the soups I have tried here. From vegan to full of meat. This trip it was the chili. Just the right spice. Just stopped in to see what they had! They seem to have a little bit of everything. Between food, alcoholic beverages, a deli where they sell bread as well, ice cream, and in items in between. They also had poke options. We ended up with a small slice of banana bread which was pretty tasty for a quick snack! We also purchased a few dolmas which had great taste.
