At first I thought all the remodels were nice and an upgrade... But now I realize that they are catering to only the tourist on this island... Following the footsteps of just about every other businesses on the island. The new owners, they clearly think that the locals don't matter! The last 3 times I've been in there I've had to go elsewhere to find what I was looking for because they no longer carry anything but overpriced wine and overpriced deli food. I chose this check-in so I could tell you about Makawao, a little cowboy town (Paniolo) in the middle of Maui. This is the cutest place in Maui and if you know the history of Maui expected. The general store has everything you would normally think of and some extras like cigars and wine. They even have a vegan section. This area is known for their organic farmers and people really like to eat healthy. If you're here on a Wednesday there is a tiny farmer's market that you shouldn't miss. Not an area I frequent regularly but every time I come in, it doesn't disappoint. It's like a mini deli/convenience store but slightly upscale. The foods/drinks they offer are typically more on the healthy side and pretty delicious. I recommend stopping in and checking out what they have to offer. I dropped by to pick up sandwiches before going up Haleakala. There was a variety of sandwiches and the deli as well as assorted rice box lunches. I opted for the Classic Italian on ciabatta. With several kinds if meat, there were sprouts, tomato, roasted peppers and red onions. Instead of mayonnaise, I had pesto which I thought would better survive the drive. The sandwich was delicious, although I realized it was a bit more than I really needed. There were various canned sodas and drinks on the back wall. The staff was super friendly. read more

We stopped in this adorable little town on our way down during our bike ride from the top of The volcano. We were starving and ordered the turkey club heated. The portions are massive and you need to split it. It melts in your mouth and is so good that I am going back in two days for another!! The fresh salad selection is amazing. The chili and seafood gumbo warm you on a chilly day and are both heavy and filling. The fish sandwich is excellent as well as the fresh bread they serve the sandwiches with. The store has everything you need and is reasonably priced. You have to take the fare to go and eat at tables across the street or on the steps of other businesses. Yes! A perfect little convenience store in Maui paniolo (cowboy) country. They have very healthy options, including gluten free and vegan selections. It's a great place for snacks and drinks if you've been on the road a bit. Plus, they have a lovely produce section, so you can do a little grocery shopping here as well. A separate wine room, presumably temperature controlled was a great addition, although we didn't step in. Health food store meets convenience store: a recipe for the future. I dig it just as much as the adorable stray black cat does, who frequents this place for afternoon snacks from the owner. (Probably helps keep the varmints out!) Love. read more

Rodeo, I have a gripe. Your grocery products, especially perishables (ex. cheese, milk) are often on the age of old, already expired or taste as though they have been sitting out of chill too long somewhere along the way. Slimy cheese and stinky milk please? No thank you! In fact, there have been many times I am shocked and irritated to get home with yet another package of something that is due to expire in two days! These products should be labeled and discounted a week before, and then removed IMMEDIATELY upon expiration. Are you unable to do a weekly inventory? What is the deal? Are you unaware, or are you trying to turn a profit on old and inedible food? This is an on-going problem and no longer are we able to over look it as a fluke experience. I really hope you are able to address this issue so confidence can be restored. read more

Love this local grocery. They have an amazing deli with freshly made sandwiches, pizza, wraps, delectable salads and seafood options such as the ahi pole and crab cakes. Good selection of wine in the wine room and a nice variety of items to whip up a culinary meal or take care of toiletry needs. A small but well stocked pet aisle. Lots of drinks in the cold case ranging from sparkling waters, juices to kombuchas and kefir drinks. Lots of organic and vegan options on the aisles. This store has a great small town vibe. Caring and attentive staff that always leave me with a smile, well maintained kitchen and did I mention the fresh soups? There are always 4 options to choose from and they are always hearty and delicious. The chicken noodle and tomato bisque are a must try. And don't forget to try the gelato! read more

During my short time here in Makawao, I decided to do some exploring. Enter the Rodeo general Store. I was thirsty enough to find this place and enter for a good deal on drinks and/or liquor. Wherever you can find them is great with me. The Rodeo general store is a rustic convenience store that almost is like a rural 7-Eleven and a Whole Foods, but very very much scaled down to the point where shopping here is what the entire community congregates daily or weekly - if you don't want to venture out to Kihei or Kahului for stuff, if you don't need to. The Rodeo general store is the conduit for the community of Makawao and its visitors to hang out and socialize, as well as picking up food, goodies, and supplies for the day's activities in and around Maui. The selection here for anything you need is kind of limited, although you can find your assortment of fresh produce, a deli bar, and other everyday items you need to enjoy and thrive on Maui. The prices are higher here, but what can you expect but just because you're in a small town. It beats having to take time to drive out of town to find what you need. The Rodeo general store is located at 3661 Baldwin avenue in historic Makawao. They have an ATM machine at the entrance of the store, But they accept major credit cards so that's always a good thing. The only problem I see with coming here is the parking. Best bet is to come here in the mornings or better yet, find parking in nearby residential areas. Doug general store is it that big so you could actually get around and see everything within maybe 15 to 20 minutes. The pretty good thing is that they specialize in local produce, as well as stocking liquors and wine for those who love the drink. Having eaten already at the Makawao garden cafe earlier in the day, I decided to spring for water and some liquor for later. Their selection of wines we're pretty extensive and random, as well as selections relating to vegetarianism for in the deli. I think they do poke too, although I'm not too sure on that. I would definitely recommend coming here, just to check things out if you were in the neighborhood visiting or adventuring. Either option will get you in here, providing that your sense of discovery and excitement to do something new is virtually intact and eager to go for it. They function fine as a small but palatable 7-Eleven in the heart of Makawao, so it's easy enough to buy essential goodies like water and food just to keep you hanging around the town and enjoy what upcountry Maui has to offer. The service here is nothing short of great. Friendly and positive service with the 100% tinge of the alpha spirit can be felt here daily. A smile can go along way to brighten someone's day and it certainly did mine. The overall experience here at the Rodeo general store can be described as very good, but at the same time average as well. Strolling through the aisles seemed kind of blissful when trying to find what I was looking for. I have saw maybe a few local people as well as a couple of mainland tourists in the store with me that morning. It's a community store that has a lot of heart. I do love vacationing off Oahu, wherever that maybe. Give yourself some time off the beaten path, if you need to stop and shop while in Makawao. 4 stars. Support local! B+ read more

Actual general general store in Makawao town has lots of healthy food choices, fair prices and kind staff that t have a sense of humor. During my visit i saw a Do not feed the chickens sign at the bulletin board at the entrance because it causes a traffic jam inside the store only in Hawaii. read more

I shop occasionally at Rodeo since it is convenient to my home. They have a good, yet expensive, selection of healthy foods and a nice deli. The wine room is decent although many of the wines are directly from Costco and cost considerably more. My biggest concern with Rodeo is the lack of customer service. I keep trying to make excuses for the employees talking it up (more at the register than deli) and ignoring customers,but it happens almost every time that I am in the store. Today, I bought four items at a cost of over $20 and the cashier did not even ask or attempt to help me bag the items (in my reusable bag.) She just watched as I found the exact change. The "customer service" persons (I use the term loosely) definitely need training and supervision. My shopping at Rodeo will be very seldom since I do not find my experiences here very pleasant. read more

Friendly and very helpful service. Decided to stay in for dinner, so bought most of our goodies here. Finally found a favorite Napa Cabernet Sauvignon unavailable on O'ahu. The lovely Frenchie makes the best espresso's hands down!!! Great wine & beer selection. Their fresh food bar, salad sandwiches, sushi is great. I also love that they have fresh flowers and Lei's and cards for last minute gifts. I was very disappointed with the new deli menu ,gone are the wonderful smoothies,the variety of hearty "large enough to share" rustic sandwiches and wraps,and the wonderful vegetarian options.They have now been replaced with small (smaller then half of the original sandwiches) meagerly filled new reciped..I had the Asian chicken sandwich; shredded chicken ,a TINY amount of maui greens with a described "Asian slaw" that was just thickly chopped carrots,celery and cabbage with a little cilantro slathered in a bland sauce..the only thing that made it even palatable was the fresh little roll it came on and some homemade pickles I asked for on the side(not offered)..in addition the salad options are now down to 2 ..this was so disappointing I've been a regular customer for 5 years.. read more

I've shopped here about a handful of times and all the times I've been here, the cashiers have been rude. Customer service skills are seriously lacking or maybe it's just the employees that work in the evening I'm not too sure. On a recent trip, this past Saturday night, we went there to do some shopping because they do have some cool stuff. After we got to the counter with our items, I asked the price of their little Crown Apple and our cashier said $16.99 and I responded with "oh ok, no thank you it's about $19.99 at Walgreens for the bigger bottle." I know I didn't sound rude or mean however, the cashier responded very rudely with " well this isn't Walgreens!" We were like Ok....awkward.... He wasn't friendly at all and I was very surprised and disappointed to say the least. Needless to say, we wont be shopping there ever again unless it is absolutely necessary. read more

My dad and I were on our way from Waianapanapa near Hana to the top of Haleakala one morning to start our three day hike around the crater. It was still early when we got to Makawao and almost everything was still closed (except the bakery but I can't eat wheat). We had almost given up when we passed by the general store and realized there was a deli inside. I got a small spinach and almond salad which had a great dressing on it and my dad got one of their ham sandwiches which he raved about for the next three days as we trekked around the alpine desert. I was lost in Kihei and wandered into Rodeo to look up directions on my iPad without looking too obviously lost on the side of the road. No luck since my iPad is wifi only so I shoved it back into my bag and walked back out. I got followed out by an employee who said, "Hey, hey, I saw you come into my store, shove something into your bag, and then walk out!" Eep. They thought I had shoplifted. But when I explained that it was my iPad and I was simply trying to find directions, they melted and were incredibly friendly about helping me look up where I wanted to go. While I was trying to find my way to my next destination, I bought one of their local popsicles, too. It was pretty good, kind of like a paleta you can get in Los Angeles. Walked in with my 3 kids and their friend to get some gelato & decided I'd get myself a salad (I'm on keto, so there are lots of restrictions). The man who served my kids was great and very friendly and patient with them, and the woman who made me a keto friendly BLTA was awesome..I appreciated her taking the time to make sure everything was perfect for my needs. Rodeo General Store is a solid 4 star. Yay! I'm a fan. They'd be gettin' 5 stars if the prices where a little less. This great little convenience store has healthy gluten free, vegan, vegetarian delights. This is important! Especially on Maui. Not every place caters well to this demographic but Rodeo does. The cafe peeps are awesome! They encourage samples, and are always friendly. What are some of my favorites? The black bean soup for sure. The tomatillo salsa is out of this world. Their dolmas are heavenly. Actually, everything I've sampled from the deli kicks serious ass! I also enjoy betting a solo tootsie pop from time to time to satisfy my sweet tooth. If you're staying in Makawao, or are just passing through and need a quick bite to eat, this place has you covered! After going to the nearby superette for food one night and feeling a little at a loss with what to pick up from there, my husband and I found ourselves much more satisfied the next day once we found the Rodeo General Store. They offer a variety of tasty and fairly healthy snack and food offerings, as well as a fresh deli counter where you can order custom made sandwiches. I ended up picking up a Chipotle BBQ chicken wrap while there. And after a day full of hiking, I can say it really hit the spot! We also picked up a chocolate raspberry tapioca pudding to enjoy for dessert, which was delicious. This store also gets bonus points for staying open later than any other business in Makawao. Considering that the next largest town is 30 minutes away, any of you late night diners or jet lagged tourists will appreciate this convenience. Food is good service poor. I ordered a poke bowl with brown rice. There was literally a 5-7 pieces of poke on the huge amount of rice. So I questioned the employee about it. Perfect place to pick up picnic food or healthy food to go. I love getting the 3 salad combo for $9.95. I usually pick the beet and kale salad, seaweed salad, and maybe the orzo (or double up on the beet salad). They actually have a great selection of wine. It may be the only general store in the area so that's not saying much. The workers are also not so nice all the time they tend to be rude.
