When asked by text how is your stay, I let them know but nothing came of it. I went to the front desk, they are sold due to Memorial weekend. I asked for the shower to cleaned, which didn't help with the mold build up. Then later in the afternoon on my 3rd day stay a room became available. I asked to see it first before moving. The shower had missing caulking all around and mold build up as well. Needless to say the staff was polite but the rooms are in need to repairs and no amount of cleaning is going to help without updates. Hilton is huge company and unfortunately in smaller demographic areas like Rifle it doesn't matter to big businesses.

They were just cheap, argumentative, and irrational. After haggling for way too long, the manager finally agreed to provide us a suitably-sized room, but "just this once." WTF? This was appalling customer service. I'll add that this is a dated Holiday Inn with run-down rooms and amenities, and without a working pool. Full kitchen was sparsely appointed and that would be a drag longer term but we were in late and out early and grateful for a fridge to hold leftovers until we reheated for breakfast. Yay Chinese food! (Thank you, Yelp, for helping us find that place.. name escapes me but it's open til 9:30 and quite good.) It's a quick bike ride into the attractions of town (great coffee shop- see reviews) and right on/ off the freeway but still has a remote feeling and great views. I received a message from the property that they do not allow pets. Perhaps the booking service failed to state he is a service dog. I am not sure of the reason, but I did cancel the reservation. Typically, when hotels do not accept pets, and you show up with a service dog they will sell you a room, but the attitude is there. Not saying the Gateway Lodge would have an attitude; however, I didn't want to push it as I plan on moving to the area.

Temperature is controlled via a rather loud wall mounted A/C unit. The only other option is opening windows. Unfortunately, I'd have to say that the floor was more comfortable to sleep on than the bed. It had a massive bowl/divot in the center which put me in a very awkward and painful position. I was unable to get to sleep until I moved to the floor. Given the increased prices and the poor condition of the beds, it's unlikely that I'll return in the future.

Our sole purpose was to visit the ice caves of Rifle and Western Star Inn was perfect, because this was just that place where we'd sleep and leave out the door early morning. Western Star Inn had breakfast all the way until 11:00am, that we took advantage of! It was mostly a continental breakfast style, filled with snacks and no drinks. We got hard boiled eggs, laughing cow cheese, apples, yogurt etc., and out the door we go for adventure. We did get a coupon for 15% off for the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, and we also slept very comfortably in our beds. Overall a really pleasant stay. We got to make friends with Laura (or Lauren?) front desk reception and her husband. We thought their customer service was splendid. They just moved from Washington, which is another state I truly want to visit.

Unfortunately, summer is the hottest part of the year, and the on site water park feature for the kids, was out of order. In addition, the pool hours are cut off at 8pm. This is not convenient for people who are on vacation, and paying for the use of such amenities. Not impressed at all.
