I ordered bbq chicken with mac & cheese and brisket combo with green and rice. Also a side of pulled pork. The chicken has a great crispy skin that you can bite into and delivers the moist chicken thighs that are packed with flavor. You can tell he seasoned the chicken officially because you can also taste the green seasoning used primarily in Caribbean cooking. The Mac & cheese was good, and the baked beans were homemade and tasty. A tad too much nutmeg but overall delicious The brisket was well cooked and the greens were a combo of collards and cabbage that really left a great impression on me. The rice was moist and flavorful as well. The pulled pork reminded me of my time in the Carolina's and that mild sauce put it over the top for me. I found this hidden gem by accident and I'm glad I did. Rodger is so kind ! I grabbed some lunch a few days ago and ordered 2 platters. One pulled pork with rice and Mac n cheese and another mixed platter with fish and ribs with rice n Mac and cheese. Both orders came with cornbread. The food was good but I've had better. My favorite items were the rice, cornbread and tartar sauce (he makes it in house) ! The fish should could have used more seasoning. The ribs were tough, and pulled pork was way too sweet. REAL BBQ is a perfect name. I remember looking up Texas style BBQ in NJ hoping a place would come up with no gimmicks & just solid BBQ. Thank God Rodgers came up & was was near by! I made a prior attempt to go & kept driving by it. I didn't realize it was a food truck with a smoker outside in a parking lot next to another business. When I finally found it they were closed. Today I finally caught them while he was open. The prices, portions, & service are hard to beat. I wanted the brisket but he pushed me towards the pulled pork sandwich. Perfect choice as it was my favorite by far. Moist, juicy, tender, it had it all & then some. I did end up getting the brisket because I love brisket. While I enjoyed it I feel I have had better brisket elsewhere BUT nothing this good in the area. I did deduct a star because I feel he could have given the brisket more oomph after having the pulled pork. As you can see by the photos you can't brag on Instagram about how beautiful the food is but beauty and deliciousness is in the eye of the beholder and every bite was worth savoring. It is also across the street from Rahway Prison. This food is so good that it's worth breaking out of prison for. Kudos to Mr. Rodgers. It seems he is a one man show & he's been doing this for a long time. So if you're in the mood for legit BBQ this is the ONLY place I would bother going to in NJ. Rodgers has the best fried fish in the area. The seasoning is so good that my husband who is not a big fish eater will go to Rodgers for a fish dinner or sandwich. We ordered the chicken meal and it came with two sides and a piece of cornbread for ONLY $20!! I wish I took a photo but we scared it down. First of all the arroz con gandules was just like my grandmas, the Mac n cheese was delightful (not bland like most places) and the chicken fell right off the bone. Solid barbecue for a local jersey place. Everything is very fresh and not too heavy which is a huge plus point. I've eating here once at the recommendation of a Coworker. This is when I realized that "Your definition of "Delicious" is not my definition of "Delicious'. Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The portion size was great, the price was reasonable and the location was convenient. The problem for me is when you say Collard Greens, please mean exactly that, I hate Collards that are mixed with Cabbage. Although I love both Collards and Cabbage, I wish them to remain segregated. When a food establishment decides to marry the two, I think that they should specify, by calling it 'Cooked Mixed Greens' or Collards and Cabbage; in addition you had the freshness of the cabbage, yet the collards tasted can (just my opinion). So yes you would probably be correct in saying that I didn't like the so called Collard Green. As for my Barbecue Chicken, the sauce was tasty, yet the chicken was just okay, nothing special, not nasty, but okay. Last was the Mac & Cheese... sorry but I didn't like that either. Maybe it's me, I took a taste of everything and realized that I've had better, so I gave the leftovers to one of my coworkers who admits to eating anything. While he's not picky about his food, unfortunately I am. I love food, but good food. I'm a foodie, I live to eat and eat to live and then go to the gym to work it off. This I didn't have to worry about working off, because I gave 99% away. Can't believe this place isn't more popular, it's hands down the BEST bbq spot around. I usually wont go for bbq spots bc a lot of times they just throw sauce on the meat and thats it. This is a different experience. Here, the meat is well seasoned and flavorful. You can taste the spices. It tastes even better than it smells, and the aroma of the food catches you as you pull into the lot. It's a pretty unassuming spot, not fancy at all. Then again, the best food spots tend to be simple but damn effective at putting everything into their meals! The Spanish rice is so fresh, this man knows how to use aceitunas and cilantro! The greens are well balanced to where you can taste the Turkey but it doesn't take away from the collards. Prices are solid for what you get: the dinner averages around $13-16 for the meat, 2 sides and a cornbread. Customer service is on point. Todd is the owner and cook. I believe his son is also there. Both are friendly, approachable and willing to answer any questions. Didn't take long for the food at all. I'd say maybe look the menu over before you get there so you have an idea of what you want. The ribs are absolutely the way to go! Had the rib dinner with beans and coleslaw and the flavors blended together so well! The hot sauce was sweet with a good bite, and the ribs were so tender, if you wanted, you could have eaten them with just a fork if you don't like messy hands. Been wanting to try this food truck for a little while but hadn't been able to catch it when it's open. However, today was the day! I had the BBQ Chicken, collards and baked beans. I originally wanted Mac and cheese but they were out (insert tears..) deducts star for running out. BBQ Chicken - great sauce, huge portion (not sure the cut), tender and juicy. Could be cooked a tad longer I had a little pink near the bone but that happens. Great amount of sauce on the outside but I could've used a side of sauce because once you dig in, there's lots of meat, not enough sauce to go around. There was an area where the spices seemed to congregate but I ain't mad at it... Collards - mixture of collards and cabbage. Decent flavor, kind of light but it was pleasurable. I think vegetable or canola oil is used and I'm not a big fan. Olive oil might make this side mixture even better. Baked Beans - I begrudgingly took the beans as they were out of Mac and cheese.... The beans are tasty. Slightly too sweet but overall a solid side dish. Here's my biggest gripe, your containers have no separators! I almost had a heart attack when I opened my dish to see baked beans commingling with my collards . I know I'm not the only person that doesn't like their food holding hands. I wish this guy tons of success from one entrepreneur to another but I just would like to see some minor improvements to the food and the containers to which they are housed.
